yesterday one of my friends brought his laptop to school, and i used his laptop to write some other ainme files onto my DVDs.
now on my own laptop, i put in the DVD but it says that there is no disk inserted? why can't my laptop read the copied files, but can play the DVD movies that were bought?

Hmm, that is an interesting problem. Does your other computer have a DVD drive on it? If it does, try the DVD on that and if it reads it, we can isolate it to your laptop and not the DVD. If the DVD doesn't work no matter what computer you try it on, it is the DVD and you should try to burn it again. Also, when you burned the DVD, what program did you use to burn it?

Since it can watch movies on the DVD drive, it seems odd to not read a burnt DVD. It makes me lean toward the DVD failing to burn properly.

Let me know what happens on other computers.

btw can anyone explain to me why some episodes are 170MB large and some up to 290MB large?
anyone knows where to get episodes that are less than 200MB in size?

I think they are a combination of video quality and how they were compressed. I am not an expert on compression though, so I may be wrong. I don't know of anywhere that they are much smaller than 250 or so.

well kaizoku fansubs ones from episode 1 to about 80 or so are all 170-190mb in size.
www.onepiecehq.com episodes 330+ from instantz are also 170MB

anyway my friend tried to teach me how to write the DVD, but it didn't work out in the end. here's what we did

1) put in the DVD
2) open my computer
3) double click the D: drive

then suddenly a popup telling us to rename the CD appeared. my friend said that it isn't supposed to happen, so he tried closing it, but we could not access the DVD then. it happened the previous time as well. i renamed the DVD and it changed into some formatting window, telling us to wait while the DVD is being reformatted. apparently thats what spoilt it. so today my friend after a while decided to just rename it, then we copied some files onto that renamed DVD. i came back home, put it in my com and once again my com says that there is no disc inserted. also i don't think that my computer can read empty DVDs at all. could it be that my computer can only read the "movie" kind of DVDs? if so then the only solution is to buy an external hard disk...

From the sounds of how you are trying to burn the DVDs, it probably wont work. I would suggest you get a burning program such as Nero. You have to pay for a legal version, and I don't bother getting illegal ones, so I don't know where to get that. It costs like $80 but it should work fine for you. Once you get the software, you just have to make what is called a "data disk". Then add all the files you can fit on to the disk and burn it.

This method will allow you to view your episodes on computers alone. It will not work on actual DVD players, just so you know. There is a way to make it so the episodes work on a normal DVD player, but it is sort of difficult, very time consuming (about as long as each episode), and will only hold about 3 episodes per DVD. In other words, not worth it.

It seems that once you get the software to actually burn a DVD, you should be in business. I would suggest finding a free trial or something to be sure though before you spend that kind of money on the software only to find out it's your computer.

hey drex thanks for the detailed answer, i really appreciate it. however i've decided to just get an external hard disk, about 160GB or so in July. currently i'm downloading the episodes onto my laptop and saving it onto my mom's hard disk (just put properties as hidden and hopefully she wont see it). of course this won't work for the long term since one piece has like 60GB worth of episodes and she'll eventually detect it if i keep adding too many.
now i just have to find where to get high quality episodes at about 170MB in size each

Yeah that would work as well. I have an external drive and I love it. There are two different types by the way. You can get a drive that has a wall outlet for power and are usually cheaper for more gigs of memory. Or you can get one that doesn't require a wall outlet but costs much more for the same amount of gigs.

If you don't plan to leave your house and watch the episodes, a wall outlet one is just fine. If you plan to take it on the go, it is almost required that you get one that doesn't need an outlet.

I don't know if you have one you plan to get yet, but I will link a few suggestions. Not sure if you can buy stuff online, as you need a credit card or debit card to purchase stuff, and I don't know if you have either. Still I will show you some if anything just to get a price comparison.

Drives with wall outlets:
Western Digital $143 500 Gig
This was one of the best reviewed drives on the site and is fairly decent priced.

Drives that don't need outlets:
Western Digital $172 250 Gig
This is the external drive I have. I like it, have no complaints about it.

Western Digital $98 120 Gig
This one is basically the one I have only smaller and cheaper.

Hope these all help, let me know if you wanna know more.

US Dollar

All of those underlined drivers were links to a website that sells them. What country are you in? Not sure if they ship outside the US as I have never tried for obvious reasons. :P
