Ok, my friend and I were arguing about manga and comics. I tried to make it appear that manga was a cultural Japanese thing, but I had nothing to really back it up with.

How does manga differ from conventional American comic books, if at all and if not, defend your point?

eh when I hear or see american comic books all I can ever think about is super hero with tights and crazy costume going to save the day -_-

I grew up reading american comic books and got bored with them after a few years. But when I see manga I see a more clear story, if thats possible to understand, and basically a tv show on paper. I honestly cant see that with american comic...I see, "BANG, CLASH, CRASH, BOOM." Eh I am just throwing my thoughts out but thats what I see it as...

same as me,i also think of it that way
superman,batman,spiderman,x-men,whatever man always with their tight suit and go out to save the day.very lame <_<

manga have different sort of storyline, the hero dont have to be a superhero with super power (eg:hikaru no go,prince of tennis,GTO,slam dunk and a lot more) all of them dont have that super power strength or anything.just a strong will and a little gift that make them a succesful hero ;) and guess what, all the manga i mentioned above is among the best-selling manga B)

Urgh! This topic really bring back memories. lol I'm really into Archie comics and Peanuts, u know Snoopy and Charlie brown, the last time but now I'm into manga and manhwa (korean comic). In comparison, manga is better and so much fun to read. Furthermore, the art design in manga was awesome especially the pretty shoujo with handsome shounen or kakkoii vampire...awww *jaw drops on floor* Well, manga also have more varities like romance, action, comedy, etc and their storylines/plots are far more better than Archie ofc.

well the American comiscs are full of super hero stuff
like Superman, batman, X-man, SPAWN, ALIEN vs Predator and else

well DC, MARVEL COMICS are best of American comics
its full color and the character design are complicated XD

for manga they ussualy using simple terms in design also only use White and Black color, and for manga you can find more diffrent story line like Love story, Action, adventure or even adult like Hentai XD

i think it completely diffrent

and both of them had their own Fans XD

uuhhhhh funnnn i like debates....

American Comics simbolize american culture in the era of when it was made. Sure many of them are spandex wearing fools....but heres the thing, they are OLLLLDD super heros, superman is the original one, and he was first unveiled in june 1938 batman followed in may of 1939, thats a 70 year span.

Now about the storyline. In Xmen comics, they touch upon many serious topics, such as racism, with proffesor x taking a stand with martin luther king, and magneto with malcom x.....the psychological trauma that many of the comic heros go through is a great storyline aswelll, if we take the instance of "the thing" from the fantastic 4, he doesnt want to be what he has become, he cant change back, he is a "a hedious" beast. This also is shown with mr hulk, as well as many xmen. The xmen feel persecution because of what they have acquired throught genetic mutations. They are the outcasts in american comic society, as well as they are mirror images of the outcasts in real american society.

Mangas are in their high day at this point. The age of hero comics has come to a hiatus. But with that hiatus comes the surge of funny comics. AnimeSekai spoke about peanuts and archi, (Side note, i was born on the day snoopy made his 1st appearence,, woot woot snoopy is great!!!!) anyways....we can take the boondocks for instance. they started of as a comic strip, but that comic strip touched on many of black american morals and foults, it has become one of the most real cartoons ever to be launched. What the man, aaron mcgruder, says is true. But this is purely american based. It takes what is happening in america in shows it in a comedic fashion Thats where the storyline greatly rivals manga's greatests,,,in my opinion.....

Alas, ive written too much i hope i havnt lost you in the process.

I can't agree on that. Japanese are far more creative but the type of design is different. Read Akira or Ghost in the Shell, some of the best manga in history and see background art like NeoTokio, detailed Cybergenetic organisms and lots of other really creative stuff.

um personally i think that comics have more humour in them than manga.

Depends what manga it is, some are made just to be funny. For example, read Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Great Teacher Onizuka...But each one of them has on the other hand a really complex storyline with added humor on the side which USA comics like to separate often. Or just take OnePiece manga for an example, if that's not funny, then i don't know what is?

In my opinion, Japanese complex story line has surpassed USA's traditional comic styles (like Marvel, DC and others). BUT, that is not all that USA has to offer. There are infact really sophisticated comics in USA that can really parry even the most serious of Japanese manga. For example:
The Darkness
Y: The Last Man
Global Frequency
The Ultimates
The Sandman
newuniversal
Transmetropolitan
Preacher
Lucifer
Deadpool
and many others...

Let's not forget that japanese comics now known as "Manga", and the first ever Mangaka - the great Tezuka, has been influenced during the world war 2, in the period when Japan was occupied by USA soldiers and defeated. It was non other the Disney (Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop...) that gave so much inspiration to Tezuka when he created some of his best creations like AstroBoy, Kimba the Lion, Metropolis etc. Only after decade of evolution has the first form of "classical Manga" emerged from fusion of traditional japanese paintings known as "ukiyoe" and that USA style.
So basicly, we should be infact grateful for Japanese losing ww2 and creating in the process a divine product that we nowadays know as Manga and Anime.
Long Live USA comics and Manga, they both deserve a big applause.

Let's take this another way. Other than the fact that manga is read in the opposite direction, do you think the formatting of Manga is based off comics? I mean, they both have the same format inside don't they. Bubbles for speech and little boxes to distinguish scenes. Is that something that was developed by the first American comic writers, or is it older than that? If so, it would be interesting to postulate a theory about how manga came to be. This should still be within the realm of the original question but if not, sorry.

For me... I think what makes Manga different from comics is the storyline/plots...
manga has this unique genre...
when you read manga. you can experience a real life story... and it can brings too many emotion (or is it just me?)
when you read romance, you can feel the romance,
when you read the sad plot, you tend to shed a tear (or is it just me again?)

for comic... I don't know much since all I know is about superhero etc. and it is fun reading but somehow you can't feel the plots... em...

am I making any sense????

essentially they are one and the same. both are drawings / art with speech bubble that tells a story

but if we dig deeper. the plot / drawing it self vary from country to country... coz of cultural difference i guess.

Manga can refer to:
* Manga, the Japanese word for comic book

Well, if you're comparing manga to comics, it's the equivalent. I mean, do u ever see people reading comics in anime and manga? No! they're always reading mangas! It's the same way with cartoons. Their cartoons are anime.
