In the Beginning there was no sense of time. -------------------------------------- Before the settlment of the archipelago the people of the world were nomadic, living on the ocean, and off it. Ships were homes and the ocean would provide everything the people needed. Time was not important, the people lived day to day. In some mysterious way - most still don't know how it happened - those following the Red Banner was trapped in a great storm, and they were seperated from the other peoples. When the storm died out and the people dared venture back onto the decks they found themselves in a whole new world and they saw land for the first time. They landed on the nearest island, and to bless it they named it Atuan, after their leader. They were never able to rejoin the other nomdaic people, assuming that they had all perished in the storm. Not long after the settlement did the people notice strange things happening to them, and they saw memories of the lives of those who lived in the archipelago before them. Some made a deep connection with this Natural power, and they came to call themselves Master Mages. The Master Mages all had one thing in common. They could speak a language no other could. They all remembered it as True Speech, the first language. Those who did not remember the language at once, but had to be taught were called Mages. Those who made a deeper connection with the raw natural part of the magic were called Druids. The rest had no names, but they had a small hand in the pot of magic. They could do simpler spells and chants, but not to the extent of the Magii and Druids. Then there were those who could do only basic magic, and could learn no more. They are called Commoners. They also gained something entirely new to them. A sense of passing, time going by. It was decided to start time officially after the construction of the first settlement and its success over a period of five full moons. This was the year 1 A.S. (one year After Settlement) -------------------------------------- 4 A.S. The Exploration 4 Years later the first mass amount of explorers were sent out, after the people wander if the green in the distance were more lands. It was quite a memorable event, and four large vessels were sent out, told to head in five directions, North East, North West, West, East and North. They did not bother with the south for that was were they had come from, and there was no view of anything in that direction. The ships reappeared over the next four months. They did not take enough supplies, and the archipelago was vast. The did bring back primitive maps of what they discovered, and using these the people set out and settled new places. They were content four another 16 years. -------------------------------------- 21 A.S. Setting out Again Explorers were sent out again, this time with more supplies, and from varying Islands to try and prolong their time abroad and travelable distance. It was a success and it was two years before all the ships returned to Atuan with word of what they had found. A detailed map with descriptions was created. When the Current Master Mage at Atuan saw how much of the archipelago there was he ordered a move of the settlement to a new location Two close knit Islands, relatively centred to the new world. The Islands were renamed Atuan, and no new name was given to the deserted land. It would also remain deserted and nameless for another 123 years, while the other islands were being populated. 326 A.S. The Present Time The year is currently 326 A.S (After each year in Real Life, one year would have passed in Atuan. It is now 2007 in Real Life. When its 2010 the year will be 329 A.S. in Atuan, and so on.) All the Islands are inhabited in some way, and the people live happily of the land, as they once did off the sea. There is a fair Government system, and the people want for nothing. (For a Map, see here.) |
