ArchMage
The ArchMage is the wisest and oldest of all the mages. She is also the most powerful. She watches over all the people and islands, and carries the personal blessing of the gods. The ArchMage does not have an element, but instead is able to use all five.

Master Magii
Master Magii are usually born into long lines of Master Magii. The chances that a Master Mage can be born from a normal Mage or Commoner Family is rare to none. Master Magii are only classified as such after they have fifty years of experience. This usually means that they are above 70 years old. The oldest master mage on record was 300 years old.
Whether they are born masters or not, they have to have the experience before they are officially classified. Masters have the ability to use True Speech. True Speech is a magical language that was given to the most talented magii as a gift from the gods. Combining this language with ones own Mage Magic amplifies the effects.
However, Master Magii also have a great responsibility, as they have to guard the islands. Now, with this curse upon Atuan, they have their hands full.
Master Magii can be recognised by their staffs, which is always made of wood with a precious stone embedded on top.

Magii
Magii are normal mages, who have to learn to use not only true speech, but their magic through many hours of study and hard work. It does not come naturally to them as it does to Master Magii.
Magii are known to reach ages of 200 years. They can be born from either Master Mage, Magii or Commoner families. Magii families can also produce Commoner descendents.
Magii can be recognised by their staffs, which is always made of wood but is only adorned with markings.

Commoners
Commoners can do no real magic, nor can they learn to do mage magic. They can cast simple cleaning spells or finding spells, but not much more. Commoners can be classified as the following:
  • - Isle Folk : This is the general group of commoners, as they are on all islands.
    - Desert Folk : Nomads. Desert folk live mainly on the desert islands. Although Desert folk do have an arcane magic of their own(magic that needs to be learned over many years), they are still not qualified as mages.
    - Valley People : They live on the valley Islands. The Valley people live very simple lives.

Seraphs
Seraphs are ancient magical Beings. They live on the Unexplained Ones, where most people can’t dwell. They rarely leave their island homes. Seraphs are second only to the ArchMage in magic. Their magic is like no other, being strictly pure. Seraphs who leave their order become Necromancer Priests.

Druids
Druids make their homes on foresty islands as they need the plants to work with. Druids don’t perform actual magic. Their magic can be found in the potions, salves and cures they make.

Necromancers
Necromancers hide themselves on the Isles of the Dead. They summon these vile creatures to Atuan, bringing them back from the dead. Their evil combined with the curse upon Atuan is causing much worry, fear and sadness. Necromancers are lead by Necro-Priests; Seraphs who left their order.
