Link to Article: EQUAL DARTS Interesting idea. It seems to me that you are not only eliminating the advantage of going first, but actually shifting the advantage over to the person going second. The person going second will have the advantage in a close game simply because he'll know exactly how many darts he needs to take the out, versus the person going first who has to make a calculated risk on how to take out, say 50, when his opponent also is at an out. But then again, you can also argue that the person going first would be under less pressure.... I think playing 501 under these modified rules would be a fun thing to try out. It definitely would add an extra element of strategy and suspense to the game. Not sure if the "traditionalists" would ever allow this modified version of 501 to replace the traditional 501 game altogether, however. Jeff Inman |

Radical changes to league formats usually don't go over well. We've been down that road before. However, with something like this, I can see maybe offering this "Equal Darts 501" game as an option to traditional 501 game (with both players agreeing before the match) as something that might be worth trying. However, unless a dramatic change occurs in rest of the dart word, where "Equal Darts" 501 becomes a mainstream game, I can't see this becoming a standard option in our League play. Many of upper-level darters, for example, would balk at this game simply because they would feel it was not preparing them properly for tournament play, ADO playoff competition. etc. I would be interested to hear others' thoughts on this. |

I must have missed something. What exactly is the option?? Does the darter going second get the opportunity to tie the first person to take out the number? So if Player A goes first and takes out his game in 23 darts, does player B get 2 darts of his next/last turn to take it out to tie? If a tie occurs do they start over at 501? At 170? at 101? at 50? If player B takes out the game in 24 darts does player A (Who went first) get to try to tie? even though he would have to throw more than 24 darts? It seems like an interesting option, however some other concepts that I would use before this was the option for the Cork winner to choose game or going first. I have heard many darters express interest in trying this. This way if your a better cricket player, maybe you choose to play cricket and allow your opponent to throw first or if your a better player, maybe you choose to go first and let your opponent choose the game. I played soft tip for about a year and with my steel tip background and being a decent shooter of bulls, I was able to do well if not better in soft tip. The way I would get the soft tippers off the bull is to change the scoring wedge of the Bull. Like in Steel Tip, the Inner Bull is 50 and the Outer Bull is 25. There is a inner scoring area and an outer scoring area on the soft tip board, change it to 25/50 instead of having the whole area score 50. This will make them throw at higher scoring areas. Perfect games are far to easy in soft tip. I have no delusions that I will probably never have a perfect game in steel tip, however I do have a 2 perfect games in soft tip, and one was in a tournament. (cricket) (the other was 01 in league play) Anyway, if Mr. S could clarify some of these questions I would appreciate it, and BTW Bring me a Philly Cheese Steak from Pat's and Gino's when you come to Cleveland. I see them on the Food Network all the time and I want to compare them. (LOL) Have a Great Day Everybody!!!!!! God Bless!! Jon London CDC# 90-0278
