ALYSSA! I've become a Subordinate!

I looked through old threads, so forgive me if this question has been answered and I missed it. The butterflies have been cropping up a lot lately, which has led me to wonder- what exactly are they? Sure, we all know what they do; hold you in place while making a very annoying sound to alert the Subordinates to your presence. But where do they come from, and why do they do this? -Could they be the spirits of the victims that don't appear as full-bodied curable ghosts? They seem to be in highest concentration around corpses, such as behind the stage where the stagehand's body was found, flocking Nancy's car where she was found dead. I know there are several myths about butterflies carrying the souls of the dead, so maybe the purple butterflies are what the ghosts become after they've been dead and unavenged for too long to keep their physical forms. Or maybe they're the spirits of victims who aren't anchored to a specific place or sentimental item. -Are they "guard dogs," like the kinds vampires sometimes keep? They also tend to concentrate in places where the Entities's hosts live, like Corroder's factory and Chopper's graveyard, so maybe they function as a "Ruder Alarm" while the Entities' consciousness is centered in a Subordinate. |
