To clarify the third choice, by "split personality", I mean the idea that Alyssa has Multiple Personality Disorder and that Bates is just another side to her, as opposed to being an outside invader who occasionally possesses her. The explanation is purely psychological as opposed to supernatural, in other words. The first two explanations are taken more or less verbatim from the Pamphlet's suggestions as to the causes for Bates's existence. ETA: Shoulda added a "don't know" option, dammit, cause that's what I'm leaning to myself. I can see Sho coming out of Yuu psychologically, but Bates from Alyssa? ::shakes head:: EAgainTA: Thanks, enig! |

I always thought Bates was a psychological embodiment of Alyssa's anger and frustration. Except when I'm fanfic/art-ing... (Though I can't explain the male voice... overabundant Testosterone? *Shrug*) |

Bates is, in my opinion, an outside spirit who was trapped some many years ago within the pages of a cursed book. Anyone who reads the book will be forcably injected with Bates' personality. He's been jumping body-to-body for many years, and with each new body, he finds himself, or at least his host, suffering a very painful demise, to which the host dies instantly, but Bates is forced to suffer through all the many hours of agonizing torture. Because of this cycle of horrific, painful deaths, Bates has become a bit of an ass, shunning all on the outside, giving off a cold, unjust exterior. HOWEVER, he harbors a certain love for Yu, as she's his current host. He tries his hardest to protect Yu from death, and as such, attempts to protect himself from another horrifying end. That's, at least, the explination I gave in "Only I know Yu like you." Best I could think of. |

To me, I think he's just another personality...after all, "we all go a little mad sometimes." The voice and aura are probably some cosmetic things because of the fact that no one else says anything about her unusually deep, raspy voice and the dark-evil-sinister aura. Of course, if Dan could be a giant demon baby and Jennifer could open a gate to hell or wherever, I guess that Bates could easily be some intruding spirit. |

As Yu/Alyssa was not a twin (hello, mistranslation!) This got me a thinking, so I was looking up information about the family: The American version states: "Maxwell Family History" - Twin girls are rarely born into the Maxwell Family who, believing them to be cursed, have been burying them alive for the past hundred years. It is unknown if the alter ego is the other twin's spirit or it is some ghost seeking revenge on the Maxwells. I translated from what I got of the Japanese version: "The History of the Saidô Family" - It is a rarity for twin babies to be born into the Saidô family, and it was restricted to only the girls from generation to generation. Once the Saidô family believed that their twin babies were the "Cursed Children", it is customary for them to bury them alive which has been a tradition in the family for over a hundred years. Though no one understands whether or not the twin's consciousness was deep inside dwelling resentment against the Saidô family or was it holding a grudge against the Saidô family? Just for Synonymous to translate to ensure my translation is correct: 才堂家の過去 - 代々、才堂家には双子の赤子が生まれることが稀にあり、それも女子に限った。裏の心が、双子の意識だけが宿ったものなのか、才堂家に恨みを持つ怨念なのか、誰にも判らないが、才堂家では双子の赤子を「呪われた子」とし、生きたまま墓に埋めるというしきたりをかれこれ１００年以上も続けている。 So far, just take what I translated with a grain of salt before Syn confirms my translation. ^^;; |

Yes, but if this is true, and Sho\Bates is INDEED Yu\Alyssa's twin, we have a little misconception here. Unless my ears are failing me (Which they rarely do), that would make Sho\Bates a girl. Which, clearly from the voice, he is not. (Of course, a third option is that I'm just REALLY reading the last few posts the COMPLETELY wrong way. Which may be, I dunno.) |

I've heard from different people that Sho sounds like a deeper-voiced girl, so it could be true maybe, that he is really a girl? It's possible that the American version dubbed Sho the wrong way, making Bates a definite masculine voice. |

If Sho was a girl, then he'd be using WAY off language. In the drama CD you can hear him say: "Ore wa... Sho." Now, if a girl uses "ore wa" ... .... well, you just don't. XD If you're boyish and/or "butch" (like Utena or something) you use "boku wa". If Sho used "boku wa" then it could be argued... but... |

Personally, I think Sho/Bates is the spirit of the dead twin. to me it just makes sense. It would explain why Sho/Bates would want to protect Yu/Alyssa besides the fact that they share the same body. Also, isn't it possible for twins to be one boy one girl? |
