DOLPHINATSU WILL KILL U!

I cannot believe I forgot to make a poll of this before! This was on my mind throughout the whole Lotte male or female debate.

We already know that the four orphans are all female, Lotte included. But I was wondering deep down inside, do you still wished that Lotte was a male; maybe that would've made things interesting for the orphans? Or maybe you don't care what her gender is, as long as Lotte is still the same awesome character she is?

We would like to know your opinions! =D

I prefer Lotte to stay as 100% female. The idea of that you have four different personalities of little girls to struggle throughout the Burroughs' Mansion just make things interesting. You have the determined Jennifer, the brash Anne, the sensitive Rolla, and the brave Lotte.

While outwardly, Lotte may appear masculine. She still is a very feminine girl -- she worries a lot, is active and rebellious, and she is a cheerful spirit. Lotte also breaks the stereotype that women only have to have long hair, wearing a dress, and etc. to show that they are a female.

I agree that the character works so much better as a female. The concept of adopted daughters, the relationship Jennifer has formed with Lotte, and the contrast between Lotte and the other girls prove that she just works best as a girl...I think a male character in that role would have been a bit cliche and sexist (the male character is heroic and saves the day, while the girls are weaker and simply picked off).

Oh and also, I think the presence of a male would have changed Anne's attitude toward the character in general...she'd be less likely to be jealous or "catty" and would probably be more likely to wanna impress the male - but I think the relationship issues between Lotte and Anne are realistic and add depth to the characters.

I agree with everything you said, Reiji!

I think the presence of a male would have changed Anne's attitude toward the character in general...

I see it that way that Anne would most likely be jealous of Jennifer, especially since the male Lotte is her best friend. Anne would try anything to impress him in order to get the male Lotte closer to her than he is to Jennifer. Maybe Anne would do this out of spite or that she might actually have a crush on him would depend on the player. ^^;; Now imagine how ugly things'll get if all three girls were in love with the male Lotte... Other than that, a love relationship between the characters would really detract from the main focus on the game. As a background story, it'll seem more appropriate.

I agree, it's so nice and refreshing to see a knight in shining armor come in the form of a female. That is why I love Lotte, she shows that girls can actually mean business and don't have to resort to the typical "damsel-in-distress" cliché. =D

Personally, I think she should stay a girl. Even when I read debates on Lotte's gender, I always knew it was a girl. I think for all the reasons it's good she was a girl.

Poor Dan...

It's funny (though not very suprising) that no one wants her to be a boy.

Not much I can add that hasn't been said. While technically I'd still love Lotte no matter what, I have to admit I think turning her into a boy "because she acts like one" would be stereotypical. I liked that there was variety in the orphans' personalities.

I prefer Lotte as female. I always knew she's female. After all, which boy is called Lotte?

Well, if Lotte WAS a boy, then I think that Mary would've been even more merciless, because, I like to fantasise that she prefers girls over boys.

I put that it doesn't matter to me. I used to believe that Lotte was a male, partly because I thought her name was a rendition of the male name "Lot" (I'd never, and to be honest still haven't ever, heard Charlotte shortened as "Lotte"), and partly because the first time I ever heard of Lotte before playing the game, she was said to be male, and you know what they say about first impressions. Especially back in the times before the English translation was readily available.

I guess as far as a lot of the excellent points people here have made about how none of the other girls seem jealous over Lotte's attention and how romantic tension would detract from the main story, as a guy, I've been part of groups of friends where none of the girls was interested in me as more than a friend (just cuz we were better as friends...at least I hope that's the only reason, haha), and even where girls, more often than not, might rib me in the way Ann sort of picks at Lotte, so her treatment of Lotte in no way would make me think Lotte must be female. So there's my defense haha

It worked, so I guess I'm alright with Lotte having possibly been a male (in fact, on my old strategy guide at GameFAQs, you can still read from when I believed that...Enig mentions it in her section on the debate over Lotte's gender). I never saw Lotte's being male as a stereotype, because I saw Lotte's survival potential (compared to the others) being more about luck, so I never thought it was because "he" was "the big strong male" and they were the "weak little women," but rather because "he" just happened to have better fortune and not run directly into Mary or Bobby, so "he" just happened to find himself in better positions to run to Jennifer's aid. I agree that romantic tension would detract from the overall feel the game had, but I guess I never thought of "his" role as romantic back then, but rather as a possibly brotherly best friend to Jennifer. In short, when I thought she was a male, I never saw the Lotte as the big macho guy who gets all the ladies, but the down to Earth nice guy who makes no pretensions to be tougher than anyone just because "he's" a guy, and who many girls might just as easily look at as just a friend instead of being all over him. That alone, for me, solved a great deal of any problems I might have with Lotte being male, as far as it putting a damper on the game's mood in any way.

That said, when I realized (for many reasons: her figure, her scream, "Girls" being used to refer to them all once I got the English version, etc., etc.) that Lotte is a girl, that didn't bother me either. I've seen enough to know girls can be tough, and that dresses and long hair aren't the only female styles...so that doesn't upset my universe in any way, haha In fact, the only way it could be really disappointing is if a person hoped Jennifer and Lotte might have romantic interests in each other...since I hardly (if at all) ever thought that, when I did come to the conclusion Lotte is female after all, I was easily able to shrug, think "Oh, cool," and move on. As a female, Lotte is a like-able girl who is strong and heroic, but without being a "Tomboy" who's overly mean, gruff, or macho (qualities that I personally think are just as detrimental to a guy's personality as to a girl's)...in fact, in some ways Lotte is the nicest and most warm of the girls.

Basically, all the same things that I thought made Lotte a great male character (heroic, but not macho) make her a great tough but not annoying (again, by being macho) female character. Whether male or female, in other words, I think Lotte would've been a fine example that being strong and heroic don't mean being a macho show-off, a lesson I think both males and females can use, and males can take that lesson from a female character just fine, and had she been male, the same would have applied to females being able to take the same lesson from a male character.

So, that's why I guess I'd be fine whichever gender HUMAN had decided to make Lotte.

Man, I typed a lot to get that across! Sorry about that!

P.S. I have an updated version of my walkthrough up now (though the old one's still up too because my old Profile expired and that name's impossible to remake due to new naming policies) in which I correct my old assumption about Lotte.

I THOUGHT YOUR USERNAME LOOKED FAMILIAR! =O I apologize about quoting from your walkthrough, MrMasonW2DS!! The whole article I had written wasn't based around your walkthrough, but through things I have also heard from the internet back then. Then again, I got into Clock Tower after it was translated into English. ^^;; Sounds kinda like the Final Fantasy generations, sort of. Like those who played the NES-SNES FFs compared to those who played FFVII and such. We get those who played it first originally in Japanese, and those who played it in English. ^^;;

But I totally agree with your views, I think that Lotte comes off great as a role model to look up to. That she shows that you don't have to be macho to be heroic. We need more characters like that in video games.

I'm guessing I voted on this a long time ago and voted for the girl but I never shared my opinion and my first impressions...

When I first played CT:TFF I thought Lotte was Rolla, Anne and Jennifer's little brother! >_< It just appeared to me that way, and I don't really know why...

No need for apologies, Enig. I knew that the article wasn't based around my walkthrough, and it didn't come across as any kind of attack or personal criticism. So no worries there. As far as quoting, I just think it's cool that somebody who'd make a site totally devoted to Clock Tower (which I think is an awesome thing) would quote my walkthrough. Makes me feel like I'm a little slice of Clock Tower history, if that makes any sense. It's little things like that which show me that it was worth making an update to the FAQ, since it showed me people do pay attention.

As for the difference in Clock Tower generations, it's kinda surreal. I remember when few Americans probably even knew TFF existed (CT2/CTUSA was my intro to the series). I remember when the GameFAQ's forum for the game was flourishing (unless that's nostalgia talking, haha). I couldn't believe it when I realized it had been seven years since I'd first written my walkthrough there, and almost equally as long since I'd gotten sidetracked (which is an unfortunate habit of mine) and been away from those forums!

By the way, thanks for having this website, Enig. It's definitely one of the most active Clock Tower sites in recent memory, as far as I know. Brings back memories.

*Sniff sniff* What´s that smell??

Smells like.. A fanfic...!?

/edit, I have a bad habit of just voting and then "forgetting" to comment on whatever I voted for (hopefully I will learn better when I gotta vote in politics ._.'), and I honestly can´t remember what it was I voted for, so I´ll go spurt out what I feel towards this subject.

I think that it is best with all the girls just being girls. I bet the game would have been different if one and not all of the males in the game hadn´t been hungry/scissorphilic/a-giant-purple-psychic-baby.
