Well, if it was supposed to be CT4, then 'm glad they changed it. Because then, it would've either been
A). A VERY strange continuation of Alyssa's story

or

B). They started some new person's story BOO!

Many similarities? Just the gameplay is similar IMO. Woo getting chased by people, woo panic mode. That's it. The story is not at all like CT, there's the alchemy, doggy friend (instead of holy water..? lol.. Hewie is more complicated than that). It's made by Capcom. There's another similarity.

I just don't think it's related to CT at all. There's my 2 cents.

Maybe they were thinking about it, but it obviously came out very different. It's just like that RE4 and Devil May Cry thing. yadda yadda

I do not find a connection to Clock Tower to Haunting Ground. But perhaps one wanted to make at the beginning a Clock Tower 4, has itself however then undecided.

Can't you see I'm panicked? Just look at the background

IMHO Haunting Grounds seem to have more 'connections' with the first two Clock Tower Games (First Fear) rather than CT3.

It has alchemy (in ctff there are chemicals on the table of the 'rural room'), It's set in a castle (Similar to the Barrows Mansion).

A Bobby/Dan look-alike (Debilitas. Even in the concept art, he looks a bit like Dan to me...more the crypt creeper really.)

Manequins, including Daniella (Crazy woman, bit like Mary)

Crazy men (Should I really make a list? Mr. Barrows = The Belli men)

In fact, That old man looks like the picture that cries in the living room of CTFF and in the ritual room.

AND If you completed the game and look at the special features, you can see a concept art of Fiona as a brunnette (okay, okay, not really a connection...but Alyssa Hamilton was a brunnette right?).

There's also a part where Fiona gets locked up and is underground...

Hewie could get killed...hey, wait a minute...

The more I think about it, the more Haunting Ground sounds like a remake of CTFF

Hewie might as well be Lotte (it rhymes!).

Other things include Riccardo Falling off a tower, just like Bobby, the younger Riccardo Burning into flames just like Dan. GOD! And SO many things!

The bisque dolls (French dolls)

The perfume!

THE FREAKING CANE!

It fits onto something to 'open a the door'

ah....

ALYSSA! I've become a Subordinate!

I'm with victim on this one. Not only did HG take place in a castle, but many of the rooms were flat-out lifted from TFF and CT2: a child's room, a trophy room, a room with a ringing telephone that traps you if you answer it, an outdoor version of the cage room. Fiona's fight with Lorenzo is a rearranged version of Jennifer's fight with Dan; he starts out manipulating her by posing as an ally, crawls after her on his first attempt to kill her, transforms and chases her in his second, then is burned alive. Speaking of Mr. Spoileriffic up there, there's a rival stalker who looks exactly like him and who likes to linger in the music room (specifically around the piano). They have some retaliation points in common, too, such as luring your attacker over a trap door or dousing him in acid. Animal sacrifice plays a big role in both games, and both heroines are rewarded for rescuing the intended sacrifices. I could see if these were things that cropped up frequently in other survival horror games (like the ubiquitous Scary Hospital (tm)), but to my knowledge, they've only been prominently featured in Clock Tower (there was a cage room in Rule of Rose, but as that's a pretty unabashed, unrepentant Clock Tower tribute, it just emphasizes my point). I'm only mildly suspicious HG started as CT4, but I do see pretty big parallels between the two either way.

The concept art definitely contains some "Hmmmm..." items. In one of the concept sketches, there is a room with more than one girl sitting in it, and the original cage room was even more like TFF's than the one that actually made it into the game.

Also, if you don'd mind my getting into some wilder speculation, I noticed several level designs that have shadowy sketches/silhouettes of stalkers that don't look like anyone who attacks you in the game; furthermore, the disc contained all these preliminary sketches of Debilitas and Daniella, but only the final art for the last two stalkers. There's probably a perfectly logical reason for that, but it's one of my more tinfoil-hat suspicions they could have originally been Scissormen.

*removes tinfoil hat*

But, hey, whether it was or not, I still like HG just fine as HG.

Oh, victim and JBurroughs nailed it!

I remember all those little possible allusions to CT:TFF, including Debilitas holding some hedge clippers in one of the endings & the scissor-like slashes on portraits found in some of the rooms.

Also, the settings appeared to be very similar; not just the mansions, I mean, the areas surrounding them.

Oh and hey, didn't the Weeping Stones (when activated) make the same sounds as some of the enemies in Clock Tower 3?

Yeah, if I remember correctly they laugh just like the ghosts in CT3.

Weeping Stones? I don't remember these in Haunting Ground... At first I was thinking about the Weeping Dolls of Silent Hill 4, pain in my rear those things. >3<

It's an item that you can pick up. (Or maybe you can make them? I can't remember, I haven't played the game in ages.) It distracts your current stalker/other annoyances by making noise.

yes here is what I found:

After Human Entertainment folded in 1999, the Clock Tower series was sold to Capcom. Clock Tower 3 was created by Sunsoft and published by Capcom. Not only was this part of the series created by a different company, it also offered 3D movement for the first time within the series. So far, Capcom has not announced another game, although the game Haunting Ground is considered a spiritual sequel and was initially developed as Clock Tower 4.

Hmm, interesting, but I don't see a citation on the Wiki (Not that I'm a huge fan of that kinda thing, it would just be interesting to see who said it first of if it was just someone's brain droppings.)

That's the thing with Wiki; you can never be too sure if it's real or not.

BANNED!

it is true.

demento (later to be renamed in USA as haunting ground) was gonna be the fourth installment in the clock tower saga, but even in initial development, that was discarded and made a whole new game, while still keeping the same gameplay of clock tower 3.
Spoiler: click to toggle
