Fujika/Shannon's death -- WTF?

DOLPHINATSU WILL KILL U!

This has always been on my mind ever since I played and beaten Clock Tower II, I haven't seen this scene in the Japanese version, so I'll refer her here as Shannon.

This is the mystery surrounding Shannon's death. You can watch it at 7:20 through 8:50 here and this is the script:
Shannon: "I'm not going to let you escape. You're going to die here."
Alyssa: "What have I done?"
Hale: "Shannon, stop!!!"
Shannon: "What a joke...calling my name... Did you ever have the right to call me by my name? You abandoned me...when I was just...a little girl."
Hale: "If you must kill someone, kill me. What good is there in getting revenge against... ...Alyssa?"
Shannon: "Revenge? Maybe you're right, but... There must be a better way."
Shannon: *lifts up hand to her mouth, swallows something, and chokes as blood is spurted out from her lips*
Shannon: *she then collasps, she is now dead*
Hale: "What a foolish girl...!"
Alyssa: "Who is that?"
Hale: "My daughter..."
Alyssa: "Huh?"

And I also found the Japanese dialogue of what happened, translated by me and taken from here:

藤香: 逃がさないわ…。お前はここで死ぬのよ。
Fujika: "You won't escape... You will die here."
優: 私が何をしたの?
Yű: "What did I do?"
崇: やめろ、藤香!
Takashi: "Fujika, stop!"
藤香: お笑いね…アンタから名前を呼ばれるなんて。アンタが私の名前を呼べる資格なんてあったかしら?…捨てたクセに…子どもの…私を…。
Fujika: "How comedic... Hearing you of all people calling me by that name. I wonder what qualified you to call my name? You were the one that abandoned me when... I was... a child..."
崇: 殺すのなら私にしたらどうだ?優に復讐しても始まらないだろう?
Takashi: "How about killing me instead? Would you get anywhere by having your revenge against Yű?"
藤香: 復讐?…そうね…でも…。もっといい方法があるわ。
Fujika: "Revenge? That's true... but... There is a better method."
崇: 馬鹿な娘だ…。
Takashi: "Such a foolish child..."
優: 誰なの、この人。
Yű: "Who was that person?"
崇: 娘だ…私の…。
Takashi: "My... daughter..."
優: え?
Yű: "Huh?"

[NOTE: I could be wrong on this! Takashi has done a bit of a wordplay when it came to Fujika's name. Him not only saying "Yamero, Fujika!" means "Stop, Fujika!" You can also read it as "Stop, it's an emergency!" since the word "fuji ka" can mean "an emergency". Which is why Fujika commented with "Owarai ne...", owarai is a type of Japanese comedy. Anyone knowledgable in Japanese want to help out?]

I was wondering, just what in the heck did Shannon swallow? After a while, I think to myself that maybe she swallowed a cyanide pill since I just watched on Court TV that one man took a cyanide pill just as he was promoted guilty for trying to murder a woman he was stalking. And in 10 minutes, he was dead and no one can do anything for him. Considering that this is a game, they would most likely have sped up the timing process to get Shannon over and dead with, but what do you guys think?

In that short amount of time, I'd have to say a pill that consists a certain amount of arsenic, strychnine, or nicotine. All three can cause an almost instant death after swallowed, but really depends on the amount in the pill. Since we cant really see the pill, it could have been a worthy amount to casue the death.

My question is why the hell would she even bother to come all the way just to ultimately not do anything and then swallow a death pill? It just makes the whole subplot rather anti-climatic and nearly pointless, only serving to be a foreshadowing to the twist that would come.

Also, I honestly don't see how what Allen says to Shannon would even diffuse her in any way. She could have given very two reasons to push forward:

1.) It would really strike Allen Hale's core since he does love Alyssa so much.
2.) In a sense, it could be perceived that Alyssa's arrival was the beginning of not just Shannon's abandonment, but ultimately brought about the whole situation that came to a head in the game. Even if not exactly true, she could be seen as a an indirect catalyst in somone else's eyes, particularly someone seeking vengeance.

So Shannon could have still attempted to kill Alyssa and then Allen could have stepped in by trying to get Shannon off Alyssa and/or shooting Shannon. Then Shannon, not about to allow her father have the pleasure of taking her life, takes the death pill and kills herself. I think that would have ultimately made it far more satisfying than what we do see.

I agree with you on that, Flowtac, I see as that Shannon would lunge at Alyssa, but Allen grabs Alyssa and takes her away to safety. Allen then scolds Shannon to stop this and that she shouldn't hurt his daughter anymore and whatever. Shannon, seeing that ultimately her own birth father still chooses that "wench" over her. She will then take her own life.

I felt really bad because even though Shannon did not get the fairy tale ending when she died, at least it would've been much more fulfilling for the player if we had even given her a slight bit of closure before she killed herself. I seriously think that HUMAN Entertainment ran out of ideas and just tried to off the characters that were "in-the-way".

Too bad they could not consult us fans for possible ideas then. They would have had a neverending source of material considering the stuff we all tend to come up with, heheh.

But yeah, another nice thing would have been if the game had dropped the zombie angle altogether and allowed to be more room freed up for the Shannon subplot.

Exactly, it would be great to get rid of the whole zombie thing altogether. Or if they must have zombies because of the whole crazy bacteria whatnot, at least don't make it such a major plot. Or end it at Scenario 1 and that Allen was only trying to target Maxwell, but it was given to the Tate Family as well instead of the whole shebang being nothing with ZOMBIEZ!!

Would be great to have Shannon as a stalker, but not in the typical running after you sense. It would be great to have someone who would just come out of the shadows to kill you. I dunno, I would just love to see Stephanie for Scenario 1, Shannon for Scenario 2, and Maxwell for Scenario 3.

Since there's spraying blood, I thought Fujika swallowed a poisoned razor. o_o As for why she died the way she did... I completely agree with enigmaopoeia and Flowtac. It was a mistifying and anticlimactic move. All that buildup for her to... give up for no discernable reason? I'll second that WTF.

Maybe she swallowed a piece of twisted metal thinking it was a Krusty-O, like Bart did in one episode of the Simpsons.

I wish they would have taken out the zombies to add more on Fujika/Shannon. She sorta seemed just THERE when I played the game, and to be honest, you didn't really know her reasonings all that well (you knew the basics, but it all just seemed sort of rushed and thrown in)...but according to the Path to Victory strategy guide, the Zombie plot was put in the game because one of the guys in charge of game development was a HUGE fan of Romero's Zombie movies.

So I blame Romero for the lack of Fujika/Shannon.

...

:O!

Though I have to admit, Shannon as a stalker instead of the zombies would have been AWESOME.

Agreeing. (Although in that fic I'm writing, I actually give her a semi-decent reason to suicide.)
The Reasons Clock Tower And Resident Evil Can't Be Crossed Over:

1. Alyssa would pwn all the zombies.
2. Bobby would probably kill someone. It's his job.
3. Jennifer would solve the puzzles in minutes.
AND
4. Bates owns Wesker and that is that.

"I see number four as a perfectly good reason to make a crossover!"-Me

"Give me back my cow!" -My sister, upon having to chase me around the house to get back her stuffed plush... of a sheep. XD;;;

So if I'm following right, basically there was no real point to Shannon?

Was she just there to be angry at Hale for abandoning her?

I'm a bit confused anyways because I never understood who Shannon actually was other than Hale's daughter.

Why did he abandon her anyways? (I'm sorry, I'm deviating a bit but I'm just a little confused)

Poor Fujika, it seems she only existed to be fan-service for the series' goth fanbase... As for her death, I think she swallowed a cyanide capsule. The world was just too happy for her to bear.

Oh God, Drawxne's post made me LOL hard. >V< Poor emo Fujika.

Victim_of_scissors:
basically there was no real point to Shannon?

Pretty much, if she was removed completely in Clock Tower II. It wouldn't alter the storyline a bit. Because Shannon wasn't a factor in Allen digging up Alyssa's grave nor was she involved in Bates' plan for revenge. She really didn't help the already confusing storyline surrounding the Maxwell twin girls or even how Bates came to be. As much as I liked Shannon, she really had no point being in the game.

Was she just there to be angry at Hale for abandoning her?

That's pretty much it. Because Allen abandoned her when she was a little girl, she seek revenge. Her hatred grew stronger when she saw that Allen had replaced his own biological daughter with Alyssa, someone not even related to them.

Why did he abandon her anyways?

Nothing was really mentioned. Shannon's profile in the Guide section only states, "When she was 8 years old, her parents divorced, and she was taken into custody by her mother, who died of illness a year later."

There is one hypothesis I can think of, but we really don't know the exact timeline of the series. So this is a timeline that I can think of:

1972? = Allen Hale met a woman named Ms. Lewis and got married. Allen was the top technician of the Memorial Pharmaceuticals Research Lab.
1973? = Shannon Hale was born.
1974 - 1981 = Mrs. Hale had contracted an illness. Allen could never figure out the cause or cure for the disease, they both probably fought a lot about it. Especially when Allen was rarely home all the time, leaving Mrs. Hale alone with her daughter Shannon.
1981 = Allen and Ms. Lewis went through a divorce, Shannon was only 8. Ms. Lewis took full custody of Shannon.
1982 = Ms. Lewis died from the unknown illness, Shannon was now placed in the care of her mother's relatives.
1982 = Because her father could not save her mother, Shannon grew bitter toward her biological father.
1982 = George was hired into the Memorial Pharmaceuticals Research Lab at a young age and ousted Allen from his position. Most likely he got in due to his research on Cerebral Toxin?
1982 = Lynn Maxwell was born and buried alive in accordance to the Maxwell Family History. It is unknown whether or not Lynn had a twin sister.
1982 = Allen, out of anger for George, dug up Lynn's grave. He wanted to use her to get back at George.
1983 = Allen grew attached to baby Lynn and later adopted her into his family, naming her Alyssa Hale. He was now planning a way to get back at George without using Lynn.
1983 = Shannon probably spied on Allen and caught him with the baby Alyssa. Now her bitterness toward him became pure hatred because she felt like she was being "replaced".
1987 - 1989 = Allen started to notice that Alyssa was having an imaginary friend, it didn't bothered him at first.
1990 - 1992 = This imaginary friend became more than what Allen expected, Alyssa started to develop a multiple personality disorder. He learned that Alyssa's alter ego was a male by the name of Mr. Bates. He then went to a shrine and bought her an Amulet, telling Alyssa that if she believes in it, it would repress Bates. Even though the Amulet itself is not magical, Alyssa's mind made it as if the Amulet actually possessed this power.
1990's = George developed the Golden Statue and infected it with a disease which made people go mad.
1999 = The events of Clock Tower II starts. Alyssa is now 17 years old, and Allen used the Golden Statue against George.

There are things still foggy, but this is the best I can make of it. =/

Oh wow. Thanks for explaining Enig!

There is one other question about Shannon that you may or may not be able to answer:

How could Shannon disappear like a ghost like the time in the hospital?

I'm not too sure if anyone actually knows this or not.

(Poor Shannon though. Hale is an ass.)

Ya see, Shannon had connections. Jessica be tired of that crap </Kaze>, so Shannon was able to sweet talk Kaplan and get the hookups in the hospital.

*BRICKED* *BRICKED* *BRICKED*

In all seriousness, I think Shannon probably has been observing Alyssa pretty close -- so she hasn't really disappeared, she is just probably in the next room just waiting for Alyssa's next movement. Or it'll be that one rule in video games where it will never be explained... ever.
