Lime's Guide to Don't Cry Jennifer Etiquette And other hopefully helpful hints Hello! I am Lime, one of the moderators of this little forum. I've been on DCJ for a while now, and I've seen members sign up and leave, topics posted and locked, flame wars ignited and put out. Using all my experiences on this lovely board, I want to share with you some tips about how to ■ For the Newbies >> Read the rules. This should be obvious, but it never hurts to mention it anyway. Be sure to read DCJ's rules before posting so that you can make sure you won't get in trouble for something that can easily be avoided. We all make mistakes at times, but there are always ways to keep yourself from making those mistakes! >> Check your e-mail. Due to certain circumstances, we now have it so that members must check their e-mail after joining and click a link given in the message from our forum in order to be validated; you must do this in order to post and do other things members can do, whatever those may be. This should be obvious because you're told to check the e-mail you put into the sign-up form after you've completed it, but we've had people who stay validated. No, really. >> Lurk more. On a certain imageboard, it isn't uncommon for new users to be told to "lurk moar." This is actually wise advice; if you look around DCJ a bit before you first post, you'll save yourself from asking about something that has already been asked numerous times, like a certain little tidbit about Clock Tower: The First Fear, or what one of our forum memes is all about. It can also help you not make a duplicate thread, if you happen to want to make your own topic on a topic before or after introducing yourself. >> Introduce yourself. It's easier for us to talk to you if we know what you're like. If you want to say hi to all of us for the first time, be sure to start a topic in the Granite Orphanage! >> Read the forum descriptions. If you're new or just not well versed when it comes to the many sections and sub-sections of DCJ, please be sure to read the forum descriptions, the little text under the links to different areas of the forum. If you know where you're posting and what goes in there, you're less likely to put a topic in the wrong spot. Surprisingly enough, moving topics isn't one of the mods' hobbies. >> Browse through all of a topic before replying to it. Want to ask a question on a topic? Be sure to check all of the posts on it so that you don't repeat an already answered query. Following a member's fan game and want to check on its progress? You should read the whole thread before replying, just to make sure you aren't asking about a project that's on hiatus. By reading before replying you can save yourself the trouble of making a forum faux pas. ■ Dandy Do's and Don't's >> Do participate. Okay, you don't have to post every single day—or at all, if you happen to be a lurker—but if you want to join in on something, do so! The more the merrier. >> Do share your opinions. Like a certain character that everyone else hates? Show your love for them proudly! Hate a game that seems to be everyone's favorite? Go ahead and say you despise it. Don't be afraid to say what you like and dislike, but please be sure to be civil about it. >> Do be honest. Whenever you post, always tell the truth. (Unless you happen to be joking around; it's fine to make up stuff then.) Do you have more news on the Clock Tower movie? Make sure you know your sources. Did you go somewhere? It'd be best if you had some sort of evidence to back it up (buuuut if you don't, that's fine too; you don't even have to if you do happen to have pics, I was just saying that to make a point). If you lie, we'll learn about it some time or another. Just so you know, we don't tolerate liars here. >> Do be understandable. While I know not everyone's grammar and/or spelling is the best, please try to make your posts easy to read. We have many members whose first language isn't English, and if your messages in your own native language aren't easy to follow, they may have trouble reading them. On that note, please be courteous and don't use chatspeak or leet, unless you're doing so in parody. >> Do be helpful. If you see a member who has a question or needs a helping hand, and you're able to assist them, you might want to do it. If you help them out, they might return the favor! Even if they don't though, you still have the satisfaction of doing something good >> Don't break the rules. Again, this should be obvious enough. >> Don't be rude. Don't Cry Jennifer is a forum for fans of the Clock Tower games to talk to each other and have fun. If we argue all the time, we won't be able to do either. Please be kind to your fellow members, even if they're of a different sex, race, religion, sexuality or whatever of you. Don't agree with someone on a certain belief? If you must talk to them about it, do so civilly via PM. >> Don't invoke Godwin's Law. Really, don't. We'll laugh at you. Don't know what it is? You can easily look it up using your search engine of choice. Wikipedia is fine too. >> Don't overuse the emoticons. Yes, it's tempting to plant a little Danana onto every post you create, but it can be pretty annoying when emoticons pop up too much around the board. If you really have to release that urge, please do so in the Presidential Room, our spam area. Emoticons are there to be used, not abused! Same goes for the dice roll feature; only click on that little box when dice rolling is relevant to the thread, please. (To clarify, when I mean emoticons I mean the little images that show up when you type in a certain word, like this: :danana: . Using a lot of text smilies like ^^ and XD is fine, but could annoy some people.) >> Don't use anyone's fanart without their permission. Found a neat picture on DeviantArt or on the forum that you want to use for your signature and/or avatar? You really should ask the artist before editing their picture for your use in any way, as they may not appreciate it and think DCJ is full of art thieves or something. Do you want angry DA users on your tail? No? Didn't think so. ■ Who Runs the Place? DCJ currently has 1 admin, 3 global mods and 2 regional mods. They are:
■ What is...? >> Brickman? Brickman is DCJ's (un)official mascot. He was born on the topic Favorite Pairings! (May Contain Spoilers) when a mysterious attacker started to brick various members. He eventually made his own Q&A, which started the fad of members making their own Q&A threads. Brickman is known for his harsh and vile nature, and doesn't take too kindly the forum's members, especially those who happen to be fangirls. Though he seldom gets on anymore, he still lurks in the shadows, waiting for the chance to nail is next victim... :bricked: >> Baxter? Baxter is the name the members of DCJ have given to the black cat that pops out of boxes in the first Clock Tower. "Baxter" originated in the Kitty? thread. Other names members have given to random animals in the series can be find in the Name the pets of the Clock Tower series! topic, although these names aren't as widely used. The forum has more flora and fauna, but I currently can't think of any more. Happen to know of one? Please fresh my memory via PM. ■ Where can I...? >> Ask about a question relating to the forum? You can ask your question by making a topic in the Cradle Under The Star, the same section this topic is located. Be sure to look around a bit before asking, however, as it could have already been answered. >> Talk about a video game other than Clock Tower? In the Scissors Hospital. If it's a survival/psychological/etc. horror game, however, it goes in Phenomena. >> Play forum games? The Courtyard Jail Cell is where our forum games are locked up. For particularly spammy posts, take it to the Presidential Room. >> Show off something I made? You can share your creations in the Collection Room and its sub-sections. If it's a picture you drew or otherwise made, hang it up in the Gallery. If you wrote a fanfiction, poem or other piece of literature, read it aloud in the Library. If you've made a game, let our members play it in the Arcade. >> Post something else? If your topic doesn't fit in any of the other sections, it most likely goes in the Treatment Room. ■ Misc. This section is for questions that don't fit anywhere else. >> Where's my thread? If you can't find a thread you made, it was either moved, thrown into the Trash Can (a section where bad threads and posts are moved to. Don't go looking for it, because it's only visible to mods) or deleted. If your thread didn't break any rules, it must have been moved to a more appropriate forum. You can find it again by going to your profile, then Profile Options, and finally List Member's Topics; the previously missing thread should pop up on the list. If the topic was thrown away or deleted, you will usually receive a PM from one of the moderators that states why what was done to it was done. If you like a certain topic and want to follow it wherever it goes, you can subscribe to it by clicking "Track Topic" at the bottom of the thread. >> OH MAH GAWD! I got in trouble!!1! Congratulations! You've succeeded in getting a warning, getting a ban or otherwise screwing up. If you believe that you were unfairly punished, please tell the mod that handed you the ban/warning/notice that you should probably stop doing that/whatever or another member of the moderating team (for your best bet, ask Enig); if we think that you have a good point, your punishment may be lessened if you did do something but think that your punishment was too harsh, or lifted if you ended up not really doing anything to break the rules. Please be sure to communicate with the moderators in a civil and calm manner, however, as being rude will only prove that you deserved your punishment and may even make it worse if you're persistent enough. Also, if you got in trouble, don't go shouting it out on the forums. Even if you just got asked by a mod to cut the caps lock or something else minor, it's probably not the best idea to tell everyone and their brother it. Yes, we have had people do this. >> The screen is stretching! What do I do? If your post is stretching and making the page too wide, you need to check your post and look for the problem. It's most likely a really long word's fault, like an extra big Vader no; you should edit this word so that it's shorter. If it happens to not be your post's fault, and is happening whenever you look at a topic you've posted in, it must be your signature. As mentioned in the rules, signatures must be 600 x 300 or smaller, so please be sure to keep yours small enough. If you see that someone is making the page stretch, please be sure to report the post responsible or tell a mod if someone has a large signature. >> How do I make spoiler tags?
■ Want to add something? Do you have any questions or suggestions for this guide? Feel free to PM me about them! ■ Updates >> Last updated 02/04/09.
