Butterflies; What are they?

ALYSSA! I've become a Subordinate!

I looked through old threads, so forgive me if this question has been answered and I missed it. The butterflies have been cropping up a lot lately, which has led me to wonder- what exactly are they? Sure, we all know what they do; hold you in place while making a very annoying sound to alert the Subordinates to your presence. But where do they come from, and why do they do this?

-Could they be the spirits of the victims that don't appear as full-bodied curable ghosts? They seem to be in highest concentration around corpses, such as behind the stage where the stagehand's body was found, flocking Nancy's car where she was found dead. I know there are several myths about butterflies carrying the souls of the dead, so maybe the purple butterflies are what the ghosts become after they've been dead and unavenged for too long to keep their physical forms. Or maybe they're the spirits of victims who aren't anchored to a specific place or sentimental item.

-Are they "guard dogs," like the kinds vampires sometimes keep? They also tend to concentrate in places where the Entities's hosts live, like Corroder's factory and Chopper's graveyard, so maybe they function as a "Ruder Alarm" while the Entities' consciousness is centered in a Subordinate.

That theory does sound pretty cool. ^^ I don't know why people call them butterflies though... last time I looked, they looked more like moths to me... >.>

I think they were called moths in-game. Then again, I haven't played it in a while, so I could be wrong.

And yes, those are two excellent theories!

Interesting you brought that ^^ same Lime didn't play the game for a while now f[^^: but always thought they are moths actually.

Both theories are interesting but I agree more on the second one, they not always show up where the victims are, umm if you remember the room at the Scissortwin level? there wasn't any victims or corpse there. So they might be like as you said "Ruder Alarm".

Slice and dice!

I've always thought they were Rooder alarms... created by the Subbies to detect Rooders! Like a security system XD

And they look like moths, wtf? XD

Actually, I must say I never really thought about it. But yes, I did kinda get the impression they were moths, not butterflies mainly because in the closeups in Sledgy's level they look a lot more like them and also because it's a japanese game... And the Japanese seem to have a thing about moths... I dunno.

Quite honestly I just thought they were simply things the subbies could summon just to annoy the rooders and help them line up a good whack. I know it's not the most imaginative idea but I mean, if ou were a subbie, you'd blatantly be like. "Wow, wouldn't it be great if I could annoy Alyssa with some flying INSECTS?!"

Strange... if I were a subordinate, I'd tame a bunch of HORNETS to attack rooders. And not pissy annoying European ones. VESPA MANDARIANAN JAPONICAS! 8D The 3-inch hornets from Japan that can squirt acid, and 3 of them can annihilate a colony of 30,000 bees in 4 hours... o_O

Haha! Don't get me started on The Pain. I dress up my character as him on my Tom Clancy's game with the hornet camo. XD

Anyway, yeah I dunno why they wouldn't just choose a pack of like flying snakes that can shoot laser beams out of their arses... Is that the extent of their dark magic? "We have MOTHS." Oooooh scary!

Joke, but seriously, I can just imagine the scenario...

"Ok, Sledgehammer. You are the one who gets to choose an animal which you and all the subordinates can share which will aid you in your hunt for the Rooders. You have a choice of some fierce tigers that can rip off someone's head witht their teeth, some huge snakes which can poison the rooder or wrap around them and crush them, some flying demons with magical spells OR some moths which make annoying noises."

"I'll take the moths, they sound BRUTAL!"

All of the subbies just slap their foreheads.

Awesome. XD

I don't know about you, but I'd totally choose flying snakes that can shoot laser beams out of their arses.
