OK, this question has been on my mind a lot recently... o_o I just really wanna know. A little while ago, I read something on the internet (gleaned from a Google search, though I lost the link), that the two PS1 Clock Tower games were banned over here, although it was quite ambiguously-written. I checked the Wikipedia list of banned games in the UK. It isn't there. However, I have my own theories. CT USA and CT GH were released in... 1997 and 1999 respectively. And due to my Key Skills project on violence in the media, I have a feeling that due to a lot of coverage on violent videogames during the late 1990s, no publisher wanted to have the media on their backs (you could argue that it was free advertising, but still, it wasn't good publicity), so lots of violent games may not have been released over here. o_o And you could say that the two CT Playstation 1 games were examples of 'violent games'. But then again, this is just a theory, and not a true fact. So, is there any real reason, or could it just be that no-one wanted to publish it in the late 1990s? Well, funnily enough, I think most people know I live in Britain on here. But I distinctly remember seeing Clock Tower (Very first one) once in my local game store for PSX. I can't remember how long ago it was but it was years, my sis was all like "Oh man, I know some people on the internet who would kill for the original Clock Tower." But after that one time we never saw it again in there. But my point is, I don't think the game was ever outright banned in Europe. Don't forget that (Let's face it) the Clock Tower's aren't exactly huge sellers, and that's what occurred to me at the time I thought that because it wasn't overly popular and it was a classic for the fans someone probably bought it and that was that they didn't bother to get another copy. But from my experience I always thought that censorship laws were actually less strict in Europe and Britain than in the United States. Mainly because I remember one of my friends who had the game Postal II, which was banned in America... But not over here. |

Wow, I suppose that was an import? How much was it? Yeah, I don't think it was outrightly banned... both of them had lukewarm reviews, so I suppose the publishers thought no-one would buy them? ^^ But the time-period when they were released is what shakes me. Several newspaper articles over those years have lots of studies on violent videogames. Censorship is less strict over here. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was banned over here for well over 5 years, then they released a cut version, and 10 years after that, they released the uncut version. :D And Manhunt 2 was finally released over here, albeit cut. So I guess it's a waiting game? However, Rule of Rose got A LOT of media attention over here with the videogame violence debate, so while the ban for it was lifted in mainland Europe, they couldn't get anyone to publish it in the UK. ^_^ Yes, I'm a nerd. T'is my homework! |

*slaps head in hand* Actually, the first PS1 game came out in Europe. >><< Must have been a limited release though, seeing as copies sell for over £30 on its Amazon.co.uk page... |

Yeah, you know what? I think so as well, I mean although it could be classed as a "violent game," I don't personally think it goes to such an extreme length that it would encourage that kind of behaviour in people... I mean half the stuff in the game is supposed to just creep you out or downright scare you, and there's no (Or very little) blood! But anyway, yeah because I only saw it the once in the shop (And I couldn't remember the price off the top of my head... It MIGHT have been expensive because if it was that cheap we probably would have bought it... And I would have joined this forum years ago. ) which is what lead me to think that because it's a limited release it would have only taken someone who knows what the hell Clock Tower is to think "ZOMG! The original! Buy it quick because it's ultra rare!" I'm still not sure about Ghost Head though, quite honestly before I came to this forum I had no idea what it even was so... Your guesses are probably just as good as mine... |
