Did CT3 get truly scary... then laughable/silly?

OK, this topic was inspired by people on Youtube and on here, and it's even my own opinion.

I think that CT3 was really, really scary at first. Sledgey and Coco coming after you and bursting in on you at any time scared the crap out of me.

Then we meet Chopper. He's OK and all, a pretty dark and tenacious villain, but I find his voice and his movements to be a little bit silly at times... the same with Ralph/Rudy and Jemima/Janis... o.o I don't know why, I just do. I do like their clowniness sometimes, and it does sometimes heighten the fear for me (I'm coulrophobic), but sometimes I just can't take them seriously... It's like I can't really be scared by them in the same vein as Sledgey or Coco, you know? D8

Lord Pedo is even worse. He just makes me laugh and then scream when watching Youtube walkthroughs of CT3 of how damn long the boss battle takes. x3 And it doesn't help that he looks like a mishmash of a stereotypical English gentleman, and a Japanese samurai lord. 8D

Well... to be fair, ever since joining DCJ, I haven't been able to take Coco or Sledgey seriously. STOP MAKING ME THINK OF THEM IN TUTUS GODAMMIT 123LEALEA. D;

xD

So, do you guys have the same problem as me, with being able to take the later Subbies seriously?

Blame Enig, Kaze, Lime and Kraniz for making me like it! XD
BTW its Corroder in a tutu and Sledgehammer in a Batman suit. Coco X Sledge = FATMANshipping. XD
It was an intimidating game until I meet Ralph. XP

HEY, don't blame ME. D:

But yeah... When it comes to the Subordinates, it's almost as if they added in enemies from an entirely different game after the first two. Really, why create a pattern only to say "lol nevermind" right after? Basically the first two stages were like this: See victim's ghost (or in the second case, ghosts) brutally murdered -> get chased by eventual boss for the whole level -> find item -> fight boss -> beat boss, give item to victim -> happy family reunion -> ??? -> PROFIT. But then on the third level you don't see your Sub of the moment killing anyone horribly, there's no plot-important ghosts to givesentimental items to, and now the homicidal maniac chasing you seems sillier than before. Sooo... Yeah. What's up with that?

I agree with you, Lime... I'm sorry, but I don't find ChoCho scary at all. 8D

Umm, umm... you know, I was actually thinking that it'd be good if they had Subbies as scary as Coco and Sledgey after the second level... I'll have to make a topic about that some other time. :)

I like him as a character, and he manages to scare me (mostly because he tends to pop up out of nowhere... I have a bad habit of jumping at that kind of thing at times. D8), but he and the siblings seem so out of place compared to Sledgehammer and Corroder, who are a lot more believable in appearance.

Ooo, that'll be interesting!

I agree completely, after Corroder the game just really isn't scary anymore. First time I saw the game, my sis did the bit with Corroder and that was all I saw... And it gave me nightmares for like... Weeks... Probably longer. :laugh:

And yes, Sledgy was pretty scary as well. But then afterwards, I just... Loved Chopper, Ralph and Jemima waaaaaaay too much for it to be scary. I remember giving chopper the nickname "Quan Chi" the first time through because he looks like Quan Chi from Mortal Kombat. Ralph and Jemima just made me laugh way too much as well and I pretty much fell in love with them on their first cutscene.

But yeah, they do seem really different to the first two, and not in a scary way either... To me it just kinda almost felt like "Because you obviously found Sledgy and Corroder scary then you need no brutal and gorry introduction to the next guys to find them scary." I thought the whole idea of seeing them get murdered worked well because it's the whole "You better be scared because you're next." kinda effect. But with chopper and the rest it just feels like you're getting chased because... I dunno, you're just getting chased!

And yes, i've said this before; Burroughs = Total let down. Even his story isn't that scary... At all. When I found the diary entry about Lord Burroughs I was expecting him to have done something absolutely obscene or something in the past but instead it's just "He killed lots of people."

Yes, that is the main thing I dislike about the game, not that I don't like the game or anything. But it's the main thing that I think was the sort of major issue, apart from possibly the really lame ending.

ALYSSA! I've become a Subordinate!

While it's my Silly Improbabe Fan Theory (TM) that the CT3 villains get less deliberately monstrous and openly brutal as the game progresses because the writers and director were making a statement about the worst kinds of evils being hidden and superficially benign-looking, I agree the later stalkers just didn't get the menace across as well as Sledge and Corroder. It probably wasn't helped by Alyssa's evil-fighting powers taking center stage from Chopper's point on. When the story was about the brutal things that happened to May and the Rands, it was a lot scarier than when Chopper's sadistic murders were mentioned in a passing journal entry while Alyssa was on a quest to gain the power of her Ruder ancestors to fix her broken magical bow.

I pretty much agree. XD; Like Lime said (aka we're on the same brainwave again =O) Chopper does scare me when he pops outta nowhere. And he's so fast!! Other than that, he really doesn't scare me at all. And as soon as I got to Ralph and Jemima's part, like Han, I fell in love with them at first sight and liked them too much to really be scared of them at all. In fact I have a save point in their chapters where I just play around with them. XD As for Lord Burroughs, I don't like him at all, he's just a stupid enemy -___-

The only thing different about all of your viewpoints is that I also don't find Corroder scary either. He's rather silly too. Just that voice .. x_x I can't take it seriously. And really, a booty body slam? What kind of attack is that?

So actually, Sledgehammer was really the only subordinate who managed to make me go "OSHI-" when he came around. And even then I don't really like him as a villian . . XD;

mmm, yeah the guy at videogamecritic.net had talked about how the game got less scary as you progressed, ecspecially with the subordinates. With the subordinates, I say there were three main reasons they were less scary:

1. appearance
2. voice acting
3. We not seeing them kill anyone.

But as for the third reason, I think it would've been tiresome to keep doing the brutally murdered ghost victim shtick. And when I first read about Chopper (which was like a 1 1/2 years from now) I imagined him looking uglier and more bulky (I had also misread corrodewr's name as "cordiner, as in someone who do autopsies). But with chopper, aside from him being pale, bald, blank eyed, and heavily tatooed, he dosn't look very deformed. What's up with that?

PS, I don't like Lord Burroughs because he comes off to me as being snooty and self centered. I would've loved to see Darkman as a fightable enemy. I liked him a lot better with the voice acting and appearance.

While they may get progressively sillier looking, I personally felt that as you moved on, the subordinates became increasingly agile -- which can make most people anxious, especially when much of the gameplay revolves around eluding your pursuers. Sledgehammer and Corroder might've looked more daunting, but they were very much so encumbered by their stature and...unique arsenals, which made them pretty easy to out run. However, their design was gritty; very apt to the plot of the game, as opposed to the psuedo-BDSM-looking Chopper and Scissor Siblings. I mean, they're not bad designs, they just don't...fit.

If the game needed to be 'truly' scary, it only needs a couple of strong tweaks. I think it was headed in the right direction, but it had apparently meandered through a circus.

As for their voice acting, I just don't think much of it was appropriate -- it was kind of endearing, cheesy, but I'm not sure if that's what the game really needed. Don't get me wrong, I like this game, but I think it could've been done better. And it also could also be a lot worse; and I'm glad I didn't get to see what that would look like.

OMG! I have save points at each chapter as well! XD

But yes, I'm agreeing with the other contributions being made here, I did mean to say that I didn't necessarily want to see every subby murder someone because after a while it may lose it's effect. I think it would be cool if there were some more disturbing ways of like jumping out at you, like I can really imagine either Ralph or Jemima jumping out of like a pile of dead bodies or something, that would be kinda creepy.

But anyway, I think what else the thing is about Corroder and Sledgy is that in that part of the game you're still kinda unknown as to who or what they are. Sledgy worked very well because one minute you're mysteriously in 1942, the next minute you see this hench dude crack a little girl with a Sledgehammer and it's like "WOAH! What the F***?!" and it's not until after you defeat him you learn anything about the rooders, you just have this rather scary guy who is sick enough to murder a little girl chasing you around and you feel defenseless.

After Corroder, there's no mysterious setting, you're just trying to find your old gramps, and of course stories like that haven't been used before at all. :dry:
