I believe the ScummVM project needs no introduction, it's an adventure game interpreter designed to run point & click adventure games that used the LucasArts SCUMM engine, eventually, the programers started to implement other game engines with the use of source codes that have been graciously donated by some game designers (Revolution and Adventure Soft come to mind), and as a plus, some previously commercial games that are supported by ScummVM end up becoming freeware (Beneath a Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen). Now I wonder, what if all Clock Tower games (except Clock Tower 3 for obvious reasons) were ported to ScummVM? Personally, I believe it would help on bringing the series to a broader audience (PC gamers and adventure game maniacs who are not very fond of emulation and console gaming come to mind) and improve its recognition worldwide (many point & click adventure games from yesterday are the talk of today and obtain a better recognition status thanks to the ScummVM team), all this could also bring official life to a sequel if we were lucky enough. Of course, the ScummVM team doesn't add adventure games as they see fit, they required the source code that was used to develop those games in order to support them (reverse engineering a game to obtains its code is not only and arduous and tedious task, but also illegal, and it would be wonderful if Clock Tower game support could be acquired in legal ways). Since he has his own company, I'm pretty sure Mr. Hifumi Kouno would be willing to donate the source so that many more people besides our community could get a taste of the excellence that Clock Tower has brought to both horror and point & click genres (and if we were lucky enough, maybe the first three Clock Tower games could see a freeware release [now that's just whisful thinking  ]) Sadly though, I doubt this will ever happen, mainly because it's Capcom who owns the intellectual property and I doubt they would be as open-minded as British and American game companies to help the ScummVM team in supporting their games. Also, even if Mr. Kouno wanted to donate the sources, he would still need Capcoms permission to do so (it's really sad to see the father of the franchise not being able to control it's own great creation  ). These days, there have been a lot o hackers and eBay buyers getting their hands on a lot of game source codes, but I don't think it would be nice to obtain them through these methods (not to mention the ScummVM team wouldn't be very happy to work with illegally obtained source code, unless it has become public domain), and I believe all we want is to promote the series recognition in a worldwide scale and its continuous development through rightful ways. Man, biggest post I've ever written. Feel free to share your opinions as well. :ct1jennifer: |
