As promised a while back, here is an up-to-date photo of my Springer "Taffy", now at 11 mths.. He joined me today for his first walk out with the gun and I am proud to announce that the basic training over the last 5 mths seems to be paying off  He behaved very well under the gun and worked very satisfactory, although he didn't manage to flush anything (nothing there for him I think). He also completed his very first "live" retrieve today without giving it a second thought!! This came as a suprise to us both as we were waiting on a flightline for the odd pigeon (which I dont allow him to retrieve as yet, due to the soft feathers), when I heard a rustle behind us and slowly turned around to be met by a very bold Grey Squirrel looking at us only 5 yds away!!! Of course Taffy was very excited at this and his sudden movement sent the squirrel hurtling up the nearest tree again, too late the bead was on him and down he came.. seconds later, Taffy had found him on my command and the squirrel was back at my feet after the standard 'two peeps' of the whistle. RESULT!!!  Boy did I make a fuss of that dog!!! Absolutely made up!! :wub: I know it was only a squirrel, but it aint the quarry, it's the fact he did it all without a question or second thought.. *good* I also managed 2 pigeons on top of the squirrel so, I think Taffy has a good idea of what it's all about now... Here he is with his well earned prize..  Man, am I looking forward to the coming seasons... :D Composed and first posted by Back-legger686 |
