Well its not quite ended, but Chelsea should be a goal ahead! Absolutely appalling decision by the linesman to disallow their goal! And at this level could be exceptionally costly.

Mind you Chelsea are not firing enough goals in. It showed last year with so many coming from Drogba...... I am really surprised they didn't go for another proven goal scorer in the transfer window.

Aston Villa 2 Everton 0

By John Curtis, PA Sport

Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor's liking for Everton continued as he struck the decisive second goal in the Barclays Premier League victory over David Moyes' side.

The England Under-21 player had scored on his Villa debut against the Toffees 18 months ago and then netted the equaliser in last season's corresponding game at Villa Park.

This time he doubled Villa's lead after 62 minutes after John Carew's first-half opener gave Villa the confidence to push on.

Zat Knight needed treatment after blocking with his head a fierce volley from Joseph Yobo in a bright start by the visitors.

Predictably Everton's former Birmingham striker Andrew Johnson, without a goal for six months, was booed every time he touched the ball.

Ashley Young attempted the first effort on goal for Villa but his 25-yard drive flew high and wide.

Gareth Barry was incensed when referee Lee Probert adjudged he had fouled Phil Jagielka just outside the Villa box.

Leighton Barnes' curling free-kick clipped the top of the Villa defensive wall before Martin Laursen completed the clearance.

After 13 minutes Villa broke the deadlock through John Carew's first goal of the campaign.

Wilfred Bouma's left-wing cross was headed straight up in the air by Yobo and then Baines only succeeded in clearing the ball straight to Carew - who steadied himself before firing a low shot past Stefan Wessels.

Villa winger Gabriel Agbonlahor had the ball in the net again four minutes later but Young's cross had curled out of play before finding his England Under-21 team-mate.

Johnson made a telling break down the right flank after Jagielka's pass over the top of the Villa defence but his low centre was cut out by Scott Carson, who was being watched by England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence.

Johnson was working tirelessly to try to find a way through the Villa rearguard but once again Laursen was in commanding form.

Wessels failed to gather an inswinging corner from Young when under pressure from Knight but Lescott was on hand to clear.

Knight showed his physical power in dealing with Johnson after he had attempted to run onto Jagielka's through pass in shepherding the ball out for a goal-kick.

Young created space for himself on the left but the former Watford player overhit his centre by several yards.

Wessels was more convincing in coming off his line to punch away a curling corner from Barry.

Johnson's trickery won him a free-kick just outside the Villa box after being upended by Knight but Leon Osman crashed his low shot straight into the Villa defensive wall.

The Everton midfielder would also have been disappointed to curl a cross straight at Carson after taking up a good position wide right.

Knight headed a Barry corner back across goal but no-one was on hand to apply a decisive touch.

Hibbert came to Everton's rescue in first half injury-time when he headed Agbonlahor's header off the line after Wessels had missed a Young corner.

HT Aston Villa 1 Everton 0

Nigel Reo-Coker presented Everton with a chance early in the second half to get back on level terms when he brought down Jagielka on the edge of the Villa box.

Up stepped Johnson to curl the free-kick around the defensive wall but Carson was alert to the situation and had his body right behind the shot.

Jagielka sent a dangerous hard driven cross into the Villa area but it was just too far ahead of the run of Anichebe.

Johnson had his first decent chance after 52 minutes but he mis-hit his shot just past the post from a knockdown by Anichebe.

Martin O'Neill was forced to make a change after 52 minutes when Carew limped out of the action to be replaced by Craig Gardner.

Agbonlahor pushed up front alongside Luke Moore while Gardner slotted into the right side of midfield role.

Osman was not afraid to try his luck but he would have been disappointed to scuff a low shot straight through to Carson.

At the other end stand-in right-back Olof Mellberg was not too far off target with an ambitious volley from outside the Everton box.

Then after 62 minutes Agbonlahor showed great control to double Villa's lead with his third goal in four matches against Everton.

Carson's long clearance over the Everton defence was brought down with one touch by Agbonlahor and his second slid the ball wide of the dive of Wessels.

It was his second strike of the season after also netting in Villa's previous home game - the win over Chelsea three weeks ago.

Young showed great pace and trickery to get to the Everton by-line but no-one was on hand to convert his dangerous low cross.

Everton substitute Yakubu had a low drive from a narrow angle comfortable dealt with by Carson.

Barry was not far off target with a left-footed curler from just outside the Everton area.

Carson capped another competent display by holding on to a late attempt from Osman.

Gay football World Cup kicks off
By Daniel Schweimler

BBC News, Buenos Aires

Mexican gay footballers
Mexico was among the nations with teams competing for the cup
More than 500 footballers from 28 countries are getting ready to kick off at the gay World Cup in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.

The holders, London's Stonewall FC, are among the favourites, with the US and Argentina providing the closest rivals.

It is the first time the cup has been held in Latin America.

The annual event, in its 17th year, is about serious football and has a serious message, but players also seem keen to enjoy the city's nightlife.

Player and media accreditation was done in a restaurant - while the closing ceremony will take place in a nightclub.

'Cool' claim

The competition is enjoying substantial support, with backing from the Argentine Football Association - something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

But Buenos Aires is fast earning a reputation as a gay-friendly city and its love for football is second to none.

Twenty-eight teams representing cities from the US, Canada, Australia, Iceland, Germany, England, Argentina, Chile and Mexico, among others, are taking part in a week of games.

Jim, from the New York Ramblers, said gay football had attracted a lot of support in his home city.

"In New York people are very accepting of us and we actually play in several straight leagues where for the most part people know what we're about and they understand.

"Actually a lot of times when we say that we're this gay team, they actually think it's cool in New York - like, wow, there's even a gay team."

Also built into the programme are discussions on homophobia in football and a number of parties.

Portsmouth 7-4 Reading

By Stuart Roach

Benjani Mwaruwari struck a hat-trick as Pompey won an incredible match.

Two Benjani strikes had the home side cruising before Stephen Hunt struck on the stroke of half time and David James then gifted Dave Kitson an equaliser.

But Hermann Hreidarsson restored the lead before James atoned for his error by keeping out a Nicky Shorey penalty.

Benjani restored the two-goal lead and Niko Kranjcar, Sean Davis and Sulley Muntari sealed victory, with Shane Long and Shorey responding late on.

All the pre-match signs pointed to a home win, with Pompey unbeaten at Fratton Park this season and the Royals yet to win on the road and without a win over Portsmouth in 10 years.

Immediately, that streak looked set to be extended as Pompey opened the scoring after only seven minutes.

Benjani, replacing the injured Kanu up front, started and finished the move, winning possession off James Harper on half-way and then spreading the ball wide to Muntari on the left.

Muntari's return to the far post was pin-point, giving Benjani the chance to arrive behind Ivar Ingimarsson and leap acrobatically to turn the ball home unchallenged.

Reading keeper Marcus Hahnemann needed to get down low to turn a low Papa Bouba Diop skidder round his post 10 minutes before half time, but there was no reaching Benjani's second effort just three minutes later.

It was a fine individual strike from the Zimbabwean, who cut in from the right wing before stepping back inside Ingimarsson and fizzing a shot past Michael Duberry and beyond the reach of goalkeeper Hahnemann.

But Reading's American keeper then produced a miraculous save to prevent the home side from moving out of sight.

Benjani headed John Utaka's deep centre back across goal and into the path of full-back Glen Johnson, who appeared to have the simplest of tap-ins, only to see Hahnemann extend an arm and flick the ball over the bar.

Even then, the home side might have had a third following the resulting corner, but Davis drilled over as the Reading defence stood and watched.

It was a let-off for Reading, who were being totally outplayed, prompting manager Steve Coppell to come down from the stands and on to the touchline.

Whatever he said, it appeared to do the trick as the Royals pushed forward in search of a lifeline before half-time.

It came courtesy of Hunt's close-range header after Rosenior's left-foot shot appeared to have crossed the goal-line on the stroke of half-time.

Whoever eventually claims the goal, the single-goal deficit flattered the visitors at the break and they started the second half like a side that had been let off the hook, before a howler from David James gifted them the chance of parity which Kitson took with some style.

James inexplicably raced from his goal as Kitson battled Sol Campbell in the right-back position, and a neat first touch from the striker gave him the chance to crash a left-foot shot into the unguarded net from 20 yards.

But, having got back on level terms, Reading then handed the initiative back to the home side.

Defender Hreidarsson raced forward to outjump the struggling Brynjar Gunnarsson and reach Sylvain Distin's left-foot cross, flicking home a header as Hahnemann was left grasping at thin air.

Still Reading refused to lie down though and, 20 minutes from time they were gifted another route back by the home side.

This time it was Diop who erred, sticking out an arm to parry Kitson's attempted pass right under the nose of referee Mark Halsey.

Shorey's resulting spot-kick was struck firmly, but was superbly kept out by James who guessed right to atone for his earlier error.

Benjani made certain of victory as he completed his hat-trick five minutes later.

The hapless Gunnarsson was again at fault, losing possession on the half-way line to Muntari, who played Benjani clear and watched in delight as the striker rounded Hahnemann and rolled the ball into an empty net.

Another Gunnarsson fluff saw the Icelandic midfielder hack a clearance straight to Davis, whose far-post cross was bundled home by Kranjcar.

Reading responded again, James Harper's left-foot volley deflecting in off substitute Shane Long, who appeared to be in an offside position.

But Muntari struck again from the spot in injury time before Shorey's deflected effort flew in to set a new Premiership record for the most aggregate goals scored in a single match.

# Portsmouth coach Joe Jordan:

"The first half was probably our best 45 minutes this season, but to come in having conceded in the last minute of the half allowed them back in.

"Even at 2-2 I don't think anyone expected the score to be exaggerated to 7-4 but overall I think the best team won.

"People say we only play one up front but today proved that it's really three and no-one deserves a hat-trick more than Benji."

# Reading manager Steve Coppell:

"It's difficult to analyse a match like that and if you try you will be there a very long time.

"We scored four goals away from home and had a chance for another with a penalty. We played a full part in the game - I don't think many teams will come here this season and score four.

"Both sets of strikers looked irresistible at times going forward but both sets of defenders will be unhappy at that scoreline. Defensively, we have got to improve, but I'd like to be on the right end of a scoreline like that and it must have been great for the impartial observer."
