Well England started well on Saturday with an excellent 3 - 0 win over Israel.

Next matches take place on Wednesday. England will take on Russia.

I think we should but I doubt they will. Gareth Barry worked really well in the middle.

I love Bread - we knead the dough......
I thought the team as a whole had a very good balance to it - something we haven't always seen. And I have to admit, Heskey did exactly what was needed, he made a nuisance of himself and pulled defenders away from other players! Although he missed a couple of really good chances!

Personally, the way SWP has been playing for Chelsea, I think he is deserving of a chance on the RW slot, and should on current form remain there - at least as a starting role with someone like Beckham when fit on the bench if needed. *as much as I am a fan of Beckham*

Gerrard passed fit to face Russia

Gerrard played 71 minutes of England's win over Israel
England v Russia
Wembley Stadium
Wednesday, 12 September
Kick-off: 2000 BST
Live coverage on BBC One, BBC Radio 5live & the BBC Sport website

England midfielder Steven Gerrard is fit to face Russia in Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley.

Gerrard played against Israel without having a painkilling injection in his fractured toe but suffered from cramp and was substituted after 71 minutes.

The midfielder told BBC Sport: "I'm fit for selection on Wednesday and the toe is feeling good."

England hope Owen Hargreaves will recover from a thigh injury but Frank Lampard remains a major doubt.

Lampard is also suffering from a thigh injury, although if he or Hargreaves are declared fit it leaves boss Steve McClaren with a selection dilemma in the centre of midfield after Gareth Barry's impressive display alongside Gerrard against Israel.

Peter Crouch is available again after his ban and competes with Emile Heskey to partner Michael Owen up front.

In the absence of the injured David Beckham, Shaun Wright-Phillips is likely to continue on the right flank at Wembley after his man-of-the-match display there on Saturday.

And former England captain Alan Mullery feels another impressive Wright-Phillips performance against Russia should be enough for him to keep his place - even when Beckham is fit.

Asked if he thought the diminutive winger should be first choice, Mullery told Radio 5live's Sportsweek: "If he plays like that on Wednesday, then definitely.

David has done his job extremely well over the years, but now you have a new era of player

Alan Mullery on Shaun Wright-Phillips

"He gives you something different and has also looked extremely sharp playing for Chelsea this season.

"David has been a great distributor of the ball, great from dead ball situations and with his passing ability.

"But what you have got with this boy is a lad who can take people on and beat them with his pace.

"David has never been blessed with pace, nor was I - I did a job.

"David has done his job extremely well over the years, but now you have a new era of player.

"At international level, you have got to have players who can beat people."

England v Russia

UEFA European Championship Qualifier

8pm, Wednesday 12 September 2007

Wembley Stadium

Live on BBC1

John Terry wants to be remembered as one of the great England captains when his career is over – and facing Russia today is one of his biggest tests so far.

The Chelsea colossus will lead his side out at Wembley tonight determined not only to pick up three points but also to prove that England are a team capable of achieving things in future.

It’s typical of the inspirational centre-half, whose entire career at Stamford Bridged so far has been steeped in victory. And if anyone is going to be motivated underneath the Wembley Arch it’s Terry.

"I want to be a captain to be remembered and that means taking us to the Euros and really giving ourselves a chance to win something with England," he said.

"To be the captain and do that would be something amazing. We’re a long way off at the minute but hopefully the possibility is there.

"It's up to the players. In our group we are the best team, it is as simple as that really. But the position in the group doesn't say that at the minute and we can't go into games thinking we are going to win because of the players we’ve got – we have to earn the right.

"It is down to me to get everybody going. But when everyone comes into that dressing room and pulls the shirt on they are right up for it anyway. A little bit of added enthusiasm from myself will help that come."

Having picked up two titles, two league cups and an FA Cup in recent times at Chelsea, if there’s one thing Terry is used to doing it’s winning. And he sees no reason to aim any lower with England.

He said: "Going onto the pitch I honestly believe that every game, not matter what it is or who we are playing against, we can win. And I try to get that across to everyone in my own way, that we are not going to get beat today.

"But I mean it in the right way. Not by going out saying we can stroll about for the first half hour and thinking it’s just going to happen. My method is that we work hard.

"You have to earn the right to win games. That comes from everybody but also from myself getting the lads going. I don’t feel any different at all from Chelsea to England. I feel very confident going into all my games and I believe in this side. I believe we can win this game."

Steven Gerrard believes an incredible competition for places in the England squad can catapult the Three Lions to the Euro 2008 finals – and beyond.

Gerrard is in confident mood ahead of Wednesday’s crucial qualifier against Russia at Wembley after Steve McClaren’s new-look side demolished Israel at the weekend.

The team included the likes of Gareth Barry, Micah Richards, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Emile Heskey – all players who weren't starting games even just a year ago.

“It shows there is great competition in the squad now and that's what we want,” said Gerrard.

“As a team, looking at the bigger picture, we want that. Obviously, I want to play and be selfish, but a team plays well when there's pressure from behind the starting 11 places.

“It's getting to the stage now where there's two or three people fighting for each position, so the people that are starting have got to perform to a certain level to stay in the team, otherwise someone's going to step into your shoes and take that position off you.

“We have had it at certain times in the past, but I think the situation we're in now means it's more intense and the quality is getting higher and higher. And that’s good for England.”

“We're happy with how it went,” he said. “The secret is that we've known each other for a long time, from the Euros in 2000 and we're good friends off the pitch so the communication was there from the off.

"The balance was right because he's left-footed and I'm a right-footer. It just seemed to work. We'd only worked on it for a couple of days before the game and we just managed to link up straightaway.”

The test now for England is to maintain their standards against Russia, qualify for Euro 2008 and then prove to the world that they have one of the best squads in football.

“If this team clicks, the quality is better than the squads that have gone into big tournaments in the past,” added the 27-year-old.

“We've got to be better though. We've underachieved of late - it's so obvious to say that. We need to deliver for this country because with the players that we've got, we've got to make the most of it.”
