4th October 2007 10:45 PinkNews.co.uk writer They took silver in Buenos Aires last week, but gay football team Stonewall FC are going for gold at next year's International Gay and Lesbian Football Association World Championships in London. The annual event, established in 1997, took place in South America for the first time this year. Douglas Edward, Stonewall FC's first team striker, was upbeat despite losing 1-0 to Argentine team Los Dogos. "The tournament was fantastic and Stonewall FC again proved that we are the premier gay football team," he said. "The spirit of the team was amazing and the football that we played was of a high quality. "It was great that other teams would comment on our performance. "I would like to thank the other teams who came to support our games in the later stages of the competition. "We won in Chicago and got Silver in South America, which is remarkable. Stonewall continue to do the UK proud on and off the pitch!" 23 teams from around the world flew in to take part in the week-long championship, including teams from Boliva, Iceland, Mexico, Montreal, Uruguay, the United States, Canada and England. The International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) is to hold their world championship at Leftfooters FC in London next August. Leftfooters FC, a gay football club based in Regent's Park, have been working with the Football Association for the past two years. The FA will provide technical support for the tournament, and will help to recruit match officials and volunteers for the biggest gay sporting event ever hosted in the UK. Up to 50 teams from across the world will apply to the tournament. The knock-out stages will take place in Regent's Park, and Leyton Orient's Matchroom Stadium will host the finals.
