Who do you think will be the next and best England football manager? Who would be the worst choice? Who would you put a bet on? |

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Harry Redknapp in the job. He has done wonders for certain players (Not least David James and Sol Campbell) - and knows the English game. He is tactically astute and has done well with limited funds compared to other clubs around them in the table at Pompey. He might be slightly "old school" and not as conventional as some, but I do think he could do a job. He likes to play attacking football - but knows when to just rein it in a little. Mourinho is another name I would love to see in the hat, but somehow I doubt it will happen. And of course, Martin O'Neill, but he has (thankfully) committed himself to Aston Villa just this afternoon. But he is very like Harry R - Unconventional, manages to get players to achieve more than others seem to get from them - and likes attacking football but knows how to put a defensive performance in when needed. So - First Choice for me is Redknapp. Second Choice - Mourinho. |

I absolutely agree that Jose is a fantastic manager. I don't think there is any doubt that he will do a brilliant job wherever he ends up. However I saw a debate (on one of my football forums) where the majority blames the FA for England's poor International standing; blasting them for not restricting the number of foreign players each team can field. In other words, there isn't enough emphasis on home grown talent and therefore the England international squad is suffering. I am not saying I necessarily agree with that view becasue I think it is potentially littered with racist and xenophobic statement. But my point is, if that really is an accusation being levelled at the FA, will they be able to justifiably appoint a non-English Manager? |

I think, and i know sweet FA about footie that in the case of england as a team we need the right person for the job. someone who's CV will actually show they have the proven skills to run the team. A team that wins and brings home the trophies because thats what is having a national side is all about. if that person is not british born i would see that as irrelevant... the team needs someone to kick arses into winning...thus my vote goes to jose. in footie terms in general i dont think the problem is we not nuturing uk talent we do but i think i think the wages and the transfer fees (which could sustain the economy of small countries ) has it part to play in all of this. when you have unlimited amounts to spend you are going to take you cash and spend it on those luxury sweets rather then buying from the penny sweet counter. Shame... because lots of talent gets washed away because of this |

Interesting comments. Personally I do believe not enough is being done by the FA at grass roots level. They have made some serious mistakes over the last 10 years or so - and I don't have much faith in them to rectify them at the moment. Partly because I just don't think they have got people in to do that and until the core members there changes I really don't see it being much use. Having said that, to me nationality isn't necessarily a bad thing for the English team. What is important is a strong, proven manager who knows the English game! Jose is, apart from someone like Guss Hiddink who has proven success with other nations, one of the few foreign managers who would fit that criteria. After all, one of the most successful managers of recents years was a certain Swede! I also don't mind seeing foreign players over here, because I do think its helped the better English players when they have quality around them. I do believer we should be fielding at least one or two English players though if possible for all teams. We're lucky at Villa because we've got some very talented young players at the moment who might make the grade and become excellent England Internationals, but despite the core being English, some of our best players are foreign! As I've said, the FA have a lot to answer for in their own stupidity. After all, they went ahead and began building a huge coaching complex at Burton-on Trent in Staffordshire with something like 14 pitches. They had to ditch it after a massive amount of work had already been poured into the project because of the overrun on costs at Wembley (another fiasco by the FA). Some clubs, like Villa, Middlesbrough and Manchester City have all produced some very talented English players in recent years. At Villa, the youth scheme is still working hard to maintain this trend, but even so, not all of the up and coming Youth players are English. You can't rely heavily on our clubs to be able to find and bring these youngsters on if they aren't found or given further help by the FA to push local schemes. Whatever you have to say about David Beckham - he now has more than one football academy going and really wants to try and give youngsters a chance to improve and even be discovered. A shame our own national footballing association can't follow his example. |
