FABIO CAPELLO last night revealed David Beckham WILL be part of his England team when he proves his fitness.

There were fears the former England captain would be stranded on 99 caps after being left out of Capello’s first England squad for last Wednesday’s match against Switzerland.

But England’s new Italian boss has dismissed those concerns and Beckham should reach the 100 mark sometime this year – if his fitness and form is good enough in America with LA Galaxy.

Capello said: “It seems the most important thing about England is that I call up David Beckham.

“But I feel we should focus on the team.

“When he is fit and ready to play, he will be part of my team.”

Capello now seems more amused than irritated over the Beckham issue.

And he made it clear after the 2-1 win over the Swiss that none of his decisions will be influenced by the home fans’ calls for Becks.

They sang, “There’s only one David Beckham” – 22 minutes into the new boss’s debut.

But Beckham, 32, will be relieved to hear he is part of Capello’s plans. Next month’s match in Paris against France is Beckham’s target for his 100th cap – but that could come too soon.

A more realistic date is England’s end-of-season games, when they are due to play two matches at the end of May and beginning of June, the latter likely to be in Trinidad & Tobago.

Meanwhile, Blackburn’s USA goalkeeper Brad Friedel says England’s goalkeeping future is in safe hands for the next ten years.

After a decade watching his Premier League rivals develop, Friedel says David James is the world-class star who can help make the country great again – before handing over the gloves to his pretenders to the throne.

Scott Carson, Robert Green and Joe Hart are all pushing claims to the England No.1 shirt – but Friedel also believes Paul Robinson will return.

Friedel said: “Goalkeepers go in waves. I think England will be pretty solid for the next ten years.

“You have the likes of Robert Green, Scott Carson and Joe Hart who are all young and playing well.

“And you have the experience of David James. On his day he’s the best goalkeeper in the world.

“I know he has been used as a scapegoat many, many times but he is a very honest guy and a brilliant goalkeeper.

“There will be time for Paul Robinson, too. He’s proved he is a good goalkeeper.

“But he’s going to have to get back on his feet whether it’s at Tottenham or elsewhere.”
