The Pirates 4 They SHOULD make.
News reached our ears this week that Pirates 4 has got the green light and is set for 2011. Obviously, this is a gigantic catastrophe. The fourth and fifth instalments have been floating around the movie news bowl for well over a year now. Johnny Depp made it pretty clear last year that it was likely to happen with this:

"Doing the 'Pirates...' movies has been an absolute blast. I'm the luckiest guy in the world to have had such a great experience. If I walk away from Jack now, I'll walk away with some amazing memories. But the end of the third movie leaves open the possibility of a fourth or fifth film, which I wouldn't be opposed to as an actor because I feel there is a lot more territory to explore with Captain Jack. I've never really felt I'm done with playing the character, so why shouldn't we try a fourth and a fifth?"

Sorry, a lot more 'territory'? A lot more cash more like. The Pirates movies have been steadily going downhill since their inception. The decline in watchability has been contrasted by a steep rise in the amount of moula they've made.

On the subject of unnecessary sequels, there's a herd of horrifically uncalled for seconds and thirds in production right now. Check them out here in our gallery.

When rubbish films, such as the muddled spectacle of At World's End, are successful, quality-checks fly out the window and yet more appallingly contrived sequels inevitably arrive. In light of the $ being made, Disney could never do the decent thing and kill this appalling series. But what should they do with it? Pirates 3 had so many ridiculous plot strands that sense or coherence has pretty much flown out the window at this point. So here are my ideas.

- The scariest sea monster ever threatens the world of the pirates. It's a giant Brian Blessed, and it is capable of drinking so much sea water that it can suck whole fleets of ships down into it's gut.

- Having been swallowed by the enormous Brian Blessed, captain Jack discovers a time machine in his back pocket. He plans to go forward in time where he can discover futuristic new weapons to defeat the monster. He zaps himself forwards to 2011.

- In modern-day London, the confused Jack's cocky swagger and outlandish clothes get him immediately spotted by British music magnate Simon Cowell. He is persuaded to audition for ITV's 'The X-Factor'.

- He walks into his audition and shouts "Ahoy there! I need to find to find a weapon that can defeat the evil Brian Blessed and rescue me mates! Savvy?" He's accepted as a comedy/vaudeville act and put through, eventually winning the whole show (they'll be pretty desperate for talent by 2011).

- Having won the day, Jack heads back to his own time where he discovers that everyone is still inside the giant Brian blessed, who turns out to be Captain Jack's grandad. On hearing about Jack's X-Factor success, The giant Brian Blessed is so touched that he spews everyone back out into the ocean. "That was an excellent performance!" says simon cowell. The end.

That random enough? Sounds like a pirates script to me!

So, what do you think?

I love the POTC movies. Maybe I'm biased because Captain Jack is to die for, although nothing quite beats the first movie, and the last one did get a tad bizarre.

Personally, I'm all for more, but I really think Elizabeth should wake up, dump Will, and run off with Jack. HELLOOOOOOOO!

By the Goths that plot scenario sounds like a queerdom story thread :laugh3

I didn't like pirates3 way too disjointed & surreal. But if they got some new writers onboard to work with their existing team I see further scope. The characters are good enough to have further adventures. The only problem is their team running out of strong ideas. There have been good & bad Batman films, for instance, depending on writers; so why not more Pirates movies if made well & they take on the mistakes made with pirates3?

Bad Batman movies??? I'm appalled .. they all rock in their own unique and special ways ..

The first Pirates was the best in my view.. I'll reserve my Jack improv for another day its been a while..

*grins to self in a grinning fashion*

I disagree with Angelus but it illustrates the point, One can like a character from a movie series even though some of the films featuring that character arn't alwaays up to par.

I'm another who found Pirates 3 disappointing, but agree there is still scope with the characters.

I think many of the Movies based on fantastic comic book Heroes have proven to be a disappointment. Of course there are notable exceptions I've collected most of them, but just because I like the character it isn't enough, the movie itself needs actual merit. It's just the same when a movie fails to deliver when adapted from a book, as happens in countless cases. like the original article says it all deteriorates into hype, spoonfed to gullible fans who pay out for shoddy work.

Absolutely ,I'd agree with that, so much comes down to merchandising revenue after the release of these movies, six months later a new fad is being pushed & all the products that go along to promote it.

See i'm a freak.. for the most i like sequals.. see sometimes i like them better than the orignal. See for the most part i think sequals can work if the characters are strong and if they use the same characters supporting actors etc...but sometimes the work well as stand alone films... like dirty dancing - havana nights.. or grease 2

Terminator 2... for example isDAMM good fucking movie...but terminator... omg i have never been so bored in my life..."are you sarah connor ?" *BAM* that was the entire movie!!!

Grease 2... underated!!!! totally!! i love grease but i do have huge soft spot for grease 2

See if the make a 4th pirates i would not technically see it as a sequal.. i would see it as a new story about the same characters..and well the way the 3rd was ended..left me thinking....i want more....

This is why we are seestas. We're equally as greedy.

When it comes to Captain Jack, I always want more!

I know at the end of the day, any further sequels to POTC are all about moneymaking........ but they have a huge fan base, it's not "exploitation" if people are willing to pay for it all, and buy into the hype.

Personally, I'm not much for the packaging or the merchandise. Call me shallow but I'll buy the movie simply to perve over JD. I could just watch him swagger about for an hour and a half. He could be speaking Swahili. I wouldn't care.

I agree with all of that except Grease 2 ,but that's because I'm genetically still part Biker & it didn't work for me .

The others you mention excellent. I do think character based films can be more than just sequals, but they need strong stories employ more writers it can be a good thing :D

PINK! EEP!

However the Pink Ladies do Rock to be fair.. so yea kinda cool ..

As far whether I'll watch POTC 4 .. well I have POTC 3 in my flat just now and I've attempted to watch it three times and it just has not captivated me .. at all. The first two in the series at least had some form of piratey sense but the last one, well .. maybe I'll think differently should I manage to watch the entire shebang but if it doesn't captivate me early on it is not likely to in the latter stage.

As for Batman well I'm a mass fan .. every film is different in its own right some are captivating some are downright silly and some very dark .. I own them all including Batman:The Movie from the original series and they keep me happy when I'm in an indulgent boi mood! I love the campness of the original series absolutely cracking and yet in turn I also love the darkness of the comic books .. after all hes not called the Dark Knight because he sits on the other side of the chess board ..

Some comic book heroes translate very well to screen .. some alas do not .. but still entertainment for all ..

Now if I only could shoot webs out of my wrists like spidyman I'd be a happy butchie ..
