Bourne to debut Dorian Gray in Edinburgh Posted Image 3rd April 2008 12:15 Tony Grew One of Britain's most successful choreographers and the mastermind behind the all-male Swan Lake will premiere his latest production in August. Dorian Gray, is desrcibed as a "dark fairy tale that tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil. "Amongst London's beautiful people, Dorian Gray is the "It Boy" - an icon of beauty and truth in an increasingly ugly world." An adaptation of Oscar Wilde's only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Bourne's new production will premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival in August before coming to London's Sadler's Wells at the beginning of September. Matthew Bourne is feted as one of the most talented choreographers working today. His all-male Swan Lake continues to be performed all around the world, ten years after its debut. Best known for his adaptations of classics, among them Nutcracker! and Edward Scissorhands, dance enthusiasts are excited that he has turned his vibrant imagination to Oscar Wilde's cautionary fable. Dorian Gray is Matthew Bourne's first new production in almost three years and reunites the team that created the double Olivier award-winning hit Play Without Words, designer Lez Brotherston, composer Terry Davies and lighting designer Paule Constable. This year sees the first revival of Edward Scissorhands. Following in the footsteps of Swan Lake, the production will tour to Australia, Paris and Athens and additionally Antwerp. In the UK dates include Birmingham, Salford and Wimbledon as well as New Adventures' annual Christmas season at its resident theatre, Sadler’s Wells. Edward Scissorhands is based on the Tim Burton film starring Johnny Depp. It is a gothic fairytale about a boy created by an eccentric inventor who dies leaving him alone and unfinished. Left with only scissors for hands, Edward must find his place in a strange new suburban world where the well-meaning community struggle to see past his strange appearance to the innocence and gentleness within. Matthew Bourne's production won critical and public acclaim when it first opened in London in November 2005. It broke all box office records at Sadler's Wells, taking in excess of £2.8 million and playing to 92,500 people, prior to a UK, US and Far East tour. I have seen two of Bourne's productions and I can recommend the experiene. I saw the All Male Swan Lake and another modernised fairly story set during the London Blitz. Absolutely brilliant. |
