When I remortgaged a couple of years ago, my tax credits were taken as income by the mortgage company. Earlier this year, I noticed my payments had gone down from £115 a week (working tax and child tax) to just £16 . They had not even written to tell me. When I rang up they said they had overpaid and were reclaiming it. I explained that the drop in income was making my mortgage difficult, but they said they had to have the overpayment back. Now they tell me I have cleared the debt but my total payment is only £40 a week. Wish I'd found that Tax credit site before now and that I'd pressured them a bit more to not cause me hardship.
