for things like the repairs I would get him to contact his local Trading Standards as they can look into the matter with regards the sale of goods act.

i would advise that he does keep paying for the car even though he probably feels he shouldn't until he gets some proper legal advice. may I also suggest he pops down to his local Citizens Advice with his agreement and all his paperwork for them to look over it
