On Friday 12.1.07 at 8pm Tonight with Trevor McDonald are doing an article
on payment protection insurance (PPI). There is currently an Office of
Fair Trading investigation into this issue, looking at whether the
insurance is actually useful to clients or not.

Stephensons Legal Services our legal partners here at Saynotoyes are to feature in the programme.

Stephensons act for over a hundred clients with problems with
payment protection - some have been forced to take it out, which can mean
the loan can be written off. Others have been sold a policy that is
worthless to them.

Some loan agreements can be completely written off. If an agreement fails
to comply with the Consumer Credit Act, the lender may not be able to
enforce it at all. It may also be possible to recover all payments made
under the agreement, and still keep any goods that the agreement financed.

However, on 1st April 2007 the law is changing. Any agreement signed after
that date will not be written off in the same way.

Lenders are known to ask people to sign new agreements to benefit from
changes in the law.

Before you sign, you should have your existing agreement checked out if
it is regulated by the Consumer Credit Act

-the total payable under the agreement is for more than £5000 OR the
agreement is secured on your property your lender is asking you to sign a new agreement

Stephensons offer a free service to check these agreements. Contract our
Instruction Taking Unit on 01942 777777 quoting ref "Stop don't sign" to
get your free check.
