Please help!!!

Myself and my husband bought a car from yes car credit approximatley 5 years ago. We handed the car back after about 2 1/2 years possibly 3 and did not have to pay any money back as we had paid the required amount. However months later we receive letters and constant hassle (still ongoing) about this insurance we took out and owe approx £1000. Like many others we did not want to take out the insurance when we bought the car, but were told the interest would go up if we declined and we would not be able to get the finance for that amount. However a company caled Go Debt have hassled us no end, threatening and intimidating phone calls at work, speaking to colleagues home visits by agents and more recently we received papers served on us hand delivered for a bankruptcy petition from the solicitors Hollis and Briggs. We have other debts and are currently in a debt management plan and have made an offer to pay off the debt. But i ask myself why should we and could somebody help with what action should we take.

Thanks
