Hi all We bought a car 3 year old from Welcome Car, Birmingham in August last year, having been assured by the salesperson that it had been subject to a multipoint check, was mot'd, safe to drive. blah blah Anyway, after 8 weeks of driving it, the exhaust fell off, whilst going down a dual carriageway, at night, with my 8 month old daughter in her car seat next to me!!! After getting over the shock and several grey hairs later, it was towed to Kwik fit, who the next day did an inspection of the car.... The result was pretty shocking! The exhaust was completely corroded, the front and rear brake discs were corroded, all the pads were over 75% worn and the clutch which we thought was high, was actually slipping and Kwik Fit said it was unsafe to drive. We got in touch with Welcome in Birmingham, they told us that it was "wear and tear"!! So, we had another inspection done which found exactly the same things wrong, so we stopped paying as we felt we shouldnt have to pay each month for a car that was unsafe to drive! To cut short a long tale of woe, hair pulling, recorded delivery letters, threats of court action and lots of bad words, only last week did we receive a call from our local (Coventry) branch saying why hadnt we paid!!! After explaining to them in no uncertain terms that the car was soon to be where the sun doesnt shine, the guy on the end of the phone went away and had a chat with his manager and they decided to fix the car! Everything...and it only took 5 months! 5 months where we hardly dared used the car and have had to use public transport! My husband took a day off work to take the car to the garage on Thurs (nearest approved Welcome ones is 25miles away), left the car there all day, called them at 4pm only to be told that Welcome had not actually authorised the repairs after all!!! So the car had been just sat there all day! Husband was furious, came back and called Welcome to tell them we want the agreement cancelled, our £1000 deposit back, we faxed them to say the same. We have heard nothing from them. Also, we have never had a copy of the so called multi point safety check that was done on the car and they seem to be dodging giving it to use, despite numerous requests. Is that normal? And lastly, we traded in our pervious car with them for £1000, however, when it came to signing the paperwork, they put down that they had only given us £1 for our car and when I asked why this was, the reply was "oh, its to do with VAT". Whats that all about? My husband is convinced its some kind of fiddle!! Can anyone shed any light on it? Any comments or advice would be really great! Thanks all! Emma |

i would go to trading standards if i was you molly bell they should be the best people to deal with goods unfit for there purpose? but.......... it seems intrestuing that they say they will take something of the price of the car i.e £1,000 and then only take a £1 i dont understand how that would findle the VAT ( because im thick) but if this was the case it would actually get a serious response from the authorities??? they dont mind if they rip us of but wo betide a buisness that rips of the Tax and VAT, its not realy my field but could be intresting if you could show they have tried to defraude the tax people??? coudnt it.

it could well be a tax fiddle. if they did the car for £1 it would mean that in total they would have to pay £1.17 to the tax man with VAT added. If they did it for £1000 they would owe the tax man £1175 with VAT. it sounds quite dodgy to me, especially if they have been doing it with a lot of cars. It means that the money they should be giving the tax man is infact going towards their profits. I would contact the HMRC (details on their website) and see what they say |

This is general practise within car/finance companies. With there being no prices displayed on the cars, the actual price is over inflated by upto £2000. When a car is brought in for PX they offer the customer over inflated prices, however the true price given for the px can be, as in your case £1.00 This does save a large amount of VAT for the garage and also makes money at auction when the PX is sold. |
