Contacting Neighbours; What's the guidelines ?

Not Yes Car this time (at least I hope not, hoping we're well rid of them), but I've been getting calls from someone or other leaving the usual message "Please ring us back, this is a business call" and quoting a reference number.

I'll admit I do have a couple of old debts that I'm guessing are being passed from pillar to post when the company who has bought the debt isn't happy that I can't pay it back under their requirements and so sell it on again - these go back about 6 years when I hit a real bad patch.
However this morning my next door neighbour has came to let me know that last night one of these companies rang him and told him to get in touch with me. I've only lived in this new property for 18 months, during which time I haven't taken out any credit and to be honest I don't even know this blokes telephone number - so it's not that I would have put him down as some kind of additional contact number.

My neighbour confirms he is listed in the phone book, so I guess with the software they could do trace neighbours in my street using address look-ups ( grasping at straws here ?).

Can they do this ?

None of these outstanding debts are for any great amounts (less than £200) and to be honest what is outstanding would be for stupid additional fees etc that the various agenices have bunged on the bill - all my original borrowing is cleared.

Anyone any advice ?

as long as they aren't passing on any information about your debt or personal details then they aren't breaking any laws - data protection etc. but surely ringing your next door neighbour can't be right? I think this is something you need to seek proper advice on cos although it sounds ethically wrong, I don't think they are breaking any laws doing it and this is how they get away with it. Anyway if youve owed the money for 6 years then how come they are still chasing you for it? aren't the debts statute barred yet?

no 6 years have checked it out and had it confirmed which is probably why they are contacting you again cos you are coming up to the 6 years and if you make the mistake of talking to them about the debt then the whole 6 years starts again

you see I don't think they break any laws unless they breach the data protection act and as you said your neighbours number is in the phonebook. I think it is morally and ethically wrong but not illegal

Does Harrasment not play a part in this, ie unsolicited phone calls?

It is against CCA guidelines for them to contact your neighbour as this can cause you embarrassement.

This they must not do francis

GoDebt also employ these tactics, we had someone call us called euro deliveries however when we confirmed our address we received nothing apart from a statutory demand the next day, strange!

They also send people out to take photos of your house so make sure your mantle piece has been polished as they would have no hesitation in sticking the camera through your window to check out your valuables. You will know if you have been a victim of this practice though as they kindly send you the picture to confirm they know the make of your VCR so you had better pay up soon!

We're planning on getting our own back on this company in a perfectly appropriate and befitting manner if anyone is interested ! if so check the message board for debt collection agencies. ddd

I've also experienced the Next Door Neighbour tactic.

My neighbour came round asking if my Ex was in (who had moved out ages ago) as there was someone on the phone with a telegram for him!

I went round to answer the phone, and she said she couldn't tell me what it was about, but gave me a reference number which I immediately recognised as an aged debt of his, and a contract phone number.

I later emailed the Telegram office who said they were aware of this but as "telegram" or rather "telogram" as they were trading as, was not a protected name, there was nothing they could do...

Pretty disgusting, really.
