MEDICAL STORIES

Summary of sides for 18 - S & S (formerly Old Wounds) (from Miss Bee on TWOP)

There is Helen, a patient who has a "recurring" surgical relationship with one of the doctors. In the sides she seems to have a benign liver tumour, but that doesn't get on well with the age she is in sides, plus it just doesn't add up with what the doctor says and does. So, we think that this is yet another plastics case disguised under something totally different (can't remember what they did the other time, but it was some sort of tumour in the sides and instead it was a plastics case). The doctor talks like Mark and behaves like Mark, and when Mark says the intern with him is a pain in the ***, she says that "it's because I'm the only one who's never had a crush on him". So this must be Mark. The patient heals in the end and it does show a softer side of Mark because the woman is afraid of the surgery, etc. And he's afraid of what may happen. Guessing here because the sides really make little sense otherwise.

Then there is Lewis, an 80-year-old man with a piece of bullet from the war stuck in some nerve or spinal thing. He is obviously Derek's patient. And the intern there seems to be Meredith. He asks her if she is married and she replies "not right now", and he comments on how she has nice eyes and a very nice smile. And she smiles at him. So that seems to be Meredith and Derek. Could also be Izzie I guess. But for some reason, I think it's Meredith.

The guy talks about hiding a painful past thing to his wife, or better, pretending everything was ok and he was over it when in fact he wasn't, so that would play into Derek not getting over Mark's betrayal. The betrayal was that his men revolted against him during the war and one of them shot him, and there is a piece of bullet inside this man from that shot. And he never got over it, over the betrayal of his own men. Or if it is Izzie, into Izzie not getting over Denny's death. Given the title of the episode, Old Wounds, I would think it works better with Derek.

The other set of stories is just for the anesthesiologist in the OR. Some sort of crisis with monitors beeping, that then gets back into place

- Chief & Bailey’s case: Lewis Scofield is a WWII paratrooper vet in his 80s who lost his wife, Louise. A female (could be Meredith but ABCMEDIANET now shoe it to be IZZIE) intern examines him. He starts to flirt with the intern, asking her is she’s married. “Not at the moment” is the intern’s response. Lewis talks about how much he misses her wife. But he doesn’t let it get him down because Louise wouldn’t put up with that. Lewis has a bullet in him from his men during WWII. His men turned against him with a decision he made. He’s kept the bullet to remind him. He really not sure if the bullet is from his men or the enemy. The doc takes out the bullet and gives it to Lewis- and he can’t tell. The doc- could be Bailey tries to tell him that he’s had Louise and he was one of the happiest men Derick has meet. Lewis tries to explain what’s its like to have your men turn against you over a decision you made. Izzie is the intern.

- Anesthesiologist: This character is in either surgery. The patient’s in surgery and it looks like the patient flat lines and they bring her back.

- Derek’s Case: Dr. Helen Crawford comes to SGH to see Derek. She is a widow and appears to be an old patient of Derek’s for New York. She is on good terms with Derek and they banter back and forth. She has a hepatocellular adenoma. She has had repeated surgeries and doesn’t want to “keep doing this” She has the surgery that requires a new procedure- she calls “big balls surgery.” She awakes with a 11-inch incision in her chest. She coded on the table. The surgery was a success and that got the whole tumor. She’s happy and gives Derek a big hug. She teases him that she’s never going to visit him again. George is the intern.

Medical Stories:

- Callie’s Case: Cathy & Nina: Cathy, the mother age 41 and Nina is the daughter age 19. Cathy is sick from a fibrous histiocytoma of the bone and dies. Cathy has a hairline fracture that is puncturing her lung. Nina is a girl that needs to be perfect. They are making a quilt together.

- Doug: comes into the Duquette Clinic: Age 45, is a diabetic and comes to the clinic because his foot is bleeding. He is a foreman on a construction job. His wife used to help him manage his diabetes and she walked out on him. He has a bone infection and they have to amputate his leg.

- Mr. & Mrs. Marquez: This couple in their 50s appear to be Callie’s parents. Mr. & Mrs. Marquez are playing the suffering parents because they didn’t know their daughter was “pregnant” (Could be something else) It appears that George calls Callie’s parents to tell them that she’s “pregnant.” Mr. Marquez complains that George comes from nothing and they don’t make any money. Mr. Marquez wants to buy them a house. The parents are finally happy because they learn that George is catholic and calls his grandmothers every Sunday.
