Grey's Anatomy - The Other Side of This Life - May 3, 2007
I. GREY'S ANATOMY
When I heard that Meredith was going to be experiencing another family death, my initial thought was Thatcher, but then I felt that it would be silly to kill off her father right after her mother. When her step mom Susan (Mare Winningham) showed up again at Seattle Grace, this time with perpetual hiccups she claimed were due to her acid reflux, I agreed with Meredith and Thatcher. I figured Susan was faking it as an excuse for Thatcher to spend needed quality time with his daughter. As Susan kept returning with worse symptoms, it was apparent she wasn't faking. The last time I mentioned Ellen Pompeo's awesome acting talent, it was when Meredith suddenly realized that her mother's Alzheimer's disease had kicked back in. Ellen gave another fabulous performance, the best scene being when Meredith had to tell Thatcher that Susan had died. Jeff Perry — attention Emmy voters — made this scene even more powerful when Thatcher slapped Meredith in a sort of knee-jerk reaction to losing his wife: "You told me she had the hiccups!" The slap was uncalled for, absolutely. But as a viewer, I somehow accepted it — estranged father to daughter under major stress receiving horribly tragic and unbelievably shocking news — and you could tell Meredith somehow accepted it as well.
Comic relief throughout the two hours was certainly Cristina and her sudden new best bud Callie. Funniest moment was perhaps Callie giving Cristina, Izzie and Meredith her rules as a bridesmaid: "I will not be wearing pink or baby blue. I do not do flowers in my hair. And I will never be seen with a bow on my ass, OK?" Sounded exactly like something Cristina would say, so Callie being asked to join Cristina's bridal party turned out to be not as absurd as it first seemed. You knew Izzie wasn't going to be thrilled, even though she showed a rare chipper side earlier, literally cheering about Cristina's wedding.
It was nice to see TV legend Diahann Carroll back as Burke's mother Jane, as well as Tsai Chin as Mrs. Yang, but I would've preferred a few more mama scenes like the one when Burke declared to Jane: "'I trust you' is code for 'learn from your mistakes'!" At least "traditional man" Burke was honest with Cristina, confessing to preferring a big wedding over a city hall ceremony.
I am liking where the Ava/Jane Doe story seems to be going. You can tell Alex keeps getting more and more smitten with her. That surgery scene was quite fascinating when Derek kept causing her to speak in multiple languages. Too bad she couldn't remember any of it. Pretty soon she'll figure out the big reason why Alex didn't fall for Addison — he's falling for Ava. Another heads up to Emmy committee members — two words: Elizabeth Reaser.
The brief kiss between Izzie and "I'm not a cheater" George on the (of course) elevator bothered me, but I was happy it wasn't one of those mad, passionate kisses (I'll get to one of those a bit later). The "we can't" followed by the "I know" just had to immediately be followed by the elevator door opening up — poof — there's Callie. Please. But hey — at least she didn't see the kiss. All hell is going to break loose when Callie does find out, but having her witness Frick and Frack kissing on the elevator would've annoyed me to no end.
I enjoyed the several awkward male bonding scenes involving two pairs of dudes who don't normally bond: Mark and Derek, and then Burke and George. How ironic for Mark to mope to Derek about how much it sucked to have to discover Addison was sleeping with someone else. Derek: "Must've been so hard for you." I was glad Mark was able to fess up to Derek about lying to Addison regarding breaking their no-sex bet. Then, per Bailey's insistence, Burke asked George for marriage advice. That's like asking Cristina for congeniality advice. Best lines were George: "Is it possible to love two people at the same time?" Burke: "I'm still hoping it's possible just to love one person." Back to Mark Sloan. I was surprised he admitted to Alex that he knew about the Alex/Addison pairing and "whatever you didn't do" was why Addison took her leave of absence.

Why Grey's Anatomy's fans hate the spin-off - May 7th 2007
The Grey's Anatomy boards and blogs, and even some of our articles here at TV Squad, have been experiencing a surge in negative comments and posts. Those comments are directed at solely one thing: the potential spin-off featuring the character of Addison. Why are fans so unhappy with the end result? Will fan comments have ABC not pick up Private Practice? Let's analyze a few of the negative comments left by the TV Squad visitors in our "Grey's Anatomy Vs. the spin-off - Part 2" post. .... ABC's 'Anatomy' widens - Posted: Sun., May 6, 2007, 2:06pm PT
Two-hour episoA "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff is looking like a sure thing after Thursday's two-hour episode of the ABC medical drama -- introducing characters from the forthcoming show -- delivered impressive ratings.

The Alphabet won't announce its fall sked until next week, but it would be a shock if the still-untitled spinoff (known in some circles as "Private Practice") doesn't make it to air.

On Thursday, "Grey's Anatomy" averaged a 9.1 rating/24 share in adults 18-49 and 21.23 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. with an episode that alternated between current storylines on the medical skein and those involving Kate Walsh, whose character, Addison, traveled down to Los Angeles to meet up with med school friends. Walsh will be joined on the spinoff by, among others, Taye Diggs, Tim Daly and Amy Brenneman.de brings in big ratings ... (link below for article )

Grey's red-headed stepchild - May 4, 2007 5:16:19 PM
How could a show so good spawn something so bad?ABC’s Thursday-night medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is due to have a baby in the form of a spin-off — tentatively, its name is Private Practice. Last night, the network performed a virtual primetime Cesarean section, carefully pulling the spin-off from the womb of a hit. The special two-hour procedure was a backdoor pilot. But, because of high Nielson Rankings, and Golden Globes and Emmys, any child of Grey’s will likely be given a permanent home by the network, on the network — no matter what. The show — of which even Bill Clinton is a huge fan, according to Hollywood Insider — is just too successful for a spin-off to be stopped..... (link below for article )

'Grey's' obsessives are in on the spin - May 4, 2007
For a long time now, "Grey's Anatomy" has positioned itself as an inside joke -- developed its own lexicon of McThises and McThats, trafficked in the assumption that its viewers are as wedded to the show as its creators.
It's hard to blame the producers, really. Each week, on the blog the show's writers keep, hundreds of fans -- most of them women -- offer testimonials about how the plotlines have kept them from eating or sleeping, or caused them to shed various degrees of tears. .... (link below for article )

Grey's Anatomy Fans Shred Spin Off - May 4, 2007
Despite being embedded in a typically well performing episode of Grey’s Anatomy, the proposed pilot of the Addison led spin off “Private Practice” was almost universally panned by critics and fans alike. A quick tour through the Grey’s Anatomy fan sites this morning was like stepping onto a battlefield, with the anti-Private Practice troops possessing superior firepower. On a personal note, I liked the segments but felt they clashed with a-typical motifs of Grey’s Anatomy. .... (link below for complete article )

Spin-Off Doctors - May 04, 2007
On ''Grey's Anatomy,'' Kate Walsh's proposed new series is dead on arrival; meanwhile, the original cast kills Meredith's stepmother ---I'm trying to think of something pleasant to say about last night's two-hour Grey's Anatomy, and...I'm still thinking. Okay, there's Bailey. As always, there's Bailey. As underutilized as ever, she essentially had one scene. And it was good. Mopey O'Malley was eating his own organs up over Izzie again this week, and at the clinic he came right out and asked Bailey if she ever had any doubts about her marriage....... Zap2it - From Inside the Box - May 03, 09:21 PM
You spin me right round, 'Anatomy' - Shonda Rhimes really must want her Grey's Anatomy spinoff to go next year, because Meredith and Derek, George and Izzie and Callie, Burke and Cristina's wedding, Ava and Karev, even an unnecessarily close-to-home death for one of our docs -- that was all on the back burner this week....... Grey's Anatomy: The Other Side of This Life - Posted May 4th 2007
Well that's it. We speculated. We ooed and ahhed. We wondered what could possibly be in store for a Grey's Anatomy spin-off starring Kate Walsh's Addison Montgomery. Well now we know and based on my initial diagnosis (doctor lingo!), I have to be honest -- it feels a lot like the exact same show in a different city with different players. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so because we've got a formula that works here. Did I like it? Sure....... (link below for complete article )

Addison's New Adventure - April 26th, 2007
When it comes to tinkering with a television cast, storyline or timeslot, we all know it's always best to leave well enough alone.
But Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is testing her luck. It worked last year when Grey's was moved from Sunday to Thursday night. But now, even though the show is the No. 1 drama on television, drawing an average of 26 million viewers, Rhimes is not content to revel in her success.
Instead, she's been cooking up a spin-off show revolving around the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd (Kate Walsh), who leaves Seattle Grace for a job in California....... (link below for complete article )

Taye Diggs had to Choose Between Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy - April 25, 2007
Taye Diggs’ value to ABC was definitely not diminished by the ugly flop of Day Break earlier this season. The time looping mystery, which stood in for LOST while it was on hiatus number two, failed to resonate with LOST fans and Day Break was quickly pulled from the air, despite Diggs’ noteworthy portrayal of the lead. While that must have been a disappointment for Diggs, and the Network, his talent prevailed and the ousted actor found himself with his choice of top ABC shows. The first option come Diggs’ way was a stint on Ugly Betty. If he had accepted the job, he would have appeared for a limited number of ‘Betty’ episodes in a guest starring capacity. Apparently, for a short time it looked like Diggs was on board, and then along came Grey’s Anatomy. ....... (link below for complete article )

Grey's Anatomy Vs. the spin-off - Apr 20th 2007
News about the Grey's Anatomy spin-off have been pouring in since late February when it was announced that Grey's character Addison would possibly get her own show. Since then, fans and critics have been speculating as to if this was a good or a bad idea. The "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off is moving along.Amy Brenneman's husband, director Brad Silberling, says the two hour Grey's that introduces the new cast finished shooting a few days ago. It's expected to air May 3.
Brenneman plays a therapist in the practice Kate Walsh's character, Addison, eventually joins in the Los Angeles area. Rumors are the new show will be called "Private Practice."
Silberling says the new series is perfect for his wife because unlike "Judging Amy," she's not carrying so much of the show. With "Judging Amy," the main storylines were only shared with Tyne Daly.
