 Why not? Because it would make his character totally unbelievable.
He declared his undying love to her. Even if she answered him back, he would never ever go sleep with Lexie. Knowing who she is or not, that won't matter. His last words to the chief were he needed to learn from his past mistakes.. So to me that means no running into the arms of someone else, but fighting for his relationship and be there for her, no matter what. Even if Mer isn't up for that yet, but it's the only way he can show he means it and that it ain;t just words.
