'Grey's Anatomy': Heart Murmurs - May 2, 2008
The return of Dr. Addison Montgomery for a fetal cardiac surgery inspires the staffers to talk about their true feelings
Okay, kids, our show is back — for real this week. And I'm going to go ahead and pretend it's not just because Addison made a cameo on last night's episode — the writing and the regular cast deserve a lot of the credit. But I'll also say that this ensemble has always run on its very complicated chemistry, and any time a key component is subtracted (this went for Burke as well), it takes some readjusting to keep things running smoothly. So it might not be a total coincidence that a little injection of Kate Walsh magically pushed everything back into place. Too bad she has to head back to the kiddie pool of Private Practice....cont'd

EW - TV WatchEllen Pompeo: Interview for EW – May 1, 2008

The wait is over! Meredith and Derek will finally reunite in the May 22 season finale of Grey's Anatomy. In preparation for the big day, we sat down with Ellen Pompeo to talk about the much-anticipated reconciliation, the show's future, and how she lays low when she's done working for the day on ABC's popular drama................cont'd

'Grey's Anatomy': Back with a vengeance

So Dr. Hahn is a lesbian. Cool. It's about time "Grey's Anatomy" had a gay, or at least non-morbidly-heterosexual character. And we're not at all certain that Hahn (Brooke Smith) is a lesbian, just that she and Callie (Sara Ramirez) seem to have some sort of mutual pash going on -- could just be a girl crush, since Callie seems totally freaked, or it could be the real thing, since Callie seems totally freaked. And what's wrong with exploring bi-sexuality on network television (though they better get moving if they want to get the jump on "House.")? .......cont’d

MSNBC - Grey’s Gossip, Weekly update – May 2, 2008

Look who's back! Insisting she wasn't back, Addison was back. She was in town for a surgery and rolled her eyes when she saw McDreamy and Meredith together. She faked excitement for "the happy couple," which means she clearly hasn't been watching this season. Then she got caught up on Meredith and McDreamy's breakup. Addison asked -- in the middle of surgery -- "Who's the unlucky McRebound?" Rose was standing right next to her. ..............cont’d

Episode Recap: Piece of My Heart - May 1, 2008
“Reunited and it feels so good!” Yes, it was almost like old times when Addison showed up tonight. If she hadn’t had to spend so much time “catching up” on all of the soapy Seattle Grace details, it might have felt like she had never left. And I almost allowed myself to be tricked into thinking she might return to Washington when the Chief suggested he could start her paperwork (despite knowing that Private Practice is fully expected to return in the fall). !...........read on

Grey's Anatomy: Pieces of My Heart - May 2nd 2008
(S04E13) "It's like I never left." - Addison

She's baaaaaack. The triumphant return of Addison. And yes I do mean triumphant - this was arguably the best episode of the season and it's funny if you think about it. Had the WGA Strike not happened, Private Practice wouldn't have gotten shelved until the fall season (only 9 season one eps aired), and Kate Walsh wouldn't have had all that free time to guest star. With her return came the Grey's Anatomy I remember. Snappy dialogue, good character development, and lots of laughs. Despite the annoying recurrence of all the cases eerily mirroring what's going on in their respective doctors' lives, I loved this episode..................read on

'Grey's Anatomy': Return of the She Shepherd - May 2, 2008
There's something about the character of Addison Montgomery that raises everyone's game. At least on Grey's Anatomy -- I can't speak to what they've managed to do to her on Private Practice (it's an unending mystery to me why she gets better scripts on this show than she does on the one that was created for her). .....cont’d

A season to forget for TV networks - May 4, 2008
AS REAL-LIFE broadcasters get set to announce their fall schedules next week in New York, they're still scratching their way out of a trench, otherwise known as the worst season in the history of the network TV business.

Not a single one of the new fall series broke through to a big audience, even the ones that looked can't-fail on paper, such as ABC's spinoff "Private Practice" and NBC's now-dead revival of "Bionic Woman."

Every network except Fox has posted significant ratings declines for the season so far, according to data from Nielsen Media Research.
Even as existing series have gradually returned from the three-month writers strike, viewers have, to the surprise and dismay of network executives, stayed away.............read on

AMPTP suspends negotiations with SAG - May 7th 2008
Raise your hand if you saw this one coming. The prospects for another strike went up as negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) once again broke down, with the AMPTP moving to negotiations with AFTRA. Among the issues causing the split, and stop me if you've heard this one before, DVD residuals, streaming, and new media. Go figure. One new wrinkle in these negotiations comes in the form of an AMPTP provision that would give them free and unlimited use of short clips of an actor's work in movies and television...............cont’d

ABC.com Testing Multiple Commercials For Online TV Episodes - May 4, 2008
Disney-ABC Television Group plans to test viewer reaction to the presence of multiple commercials within long-form online videos on its ABC.com streaming media player, THR reports. It's fairly standard for videos sites like Hulu to run only one marketer/one commercial between breaks in full-length streaming episode. Albert Cheng, EVP, digital media at DATG, concedes that viewer tolerance might not extend beyond the one-ad-per-pod model for online video, but he also feels that given the nascent stage of the format, it's premature to accept this rule as set in stone.

-- Raising CPMs: On average, the major TV networks charge about $25 CPMs, with $40 CPMs commanded by highly rated shows. Most video sites are in line with those figures, though the larger sites tend to command much higher prices by dint of the greater target viewers. By offering a series of ads, ABC.com hopes it can take advantage of that and wrest more revenues out of its online videos. ABC.com has been particularly aggressive in trying out different paths from CBS (NYSE: CBS) and NBC over the past two years. It initially resisted syndication when its rivals quickly embraced that distribution model, though ABC.com eventually switched gears on that front. Still, ABC.com was the first of the major TV nets to run full-length episodes online, starting with shows like Grey's Anatomy and Lost

-- Better targeted ads: The key to pulling off this gambit depends on marketers being able to create ads better suited to the internet, Cheng tells THR. That means not running repackaged TV spots. ABC research claims that it found significantly higher responsiveness to spots that had an interactive component, like casual gaming. In the end, if the research says that multiple ads don't work, Cheng promises that ABC.com will readily abandon the strategy.
