Grey's Anatomy: Episode 4.12, "Where The Wild Things Are" Recap - Thursday, April 24, 2008
Previously, on Grey’s Anatomy, George suggested that he and Lexie move in together. McSteamy made a play (unsuccessfully) for Hahn. Fed up with Meredith, Derek decided to give dating Rose a try. George and Izzie struggled to make their relationship work post-sneaking around.

Meredith sits anxiously in a therapy session, refusing to open up about her issues. Uh, then what’s the point of going? Meredith says that she’s fine but she just hasn’t been sleeping. When she is paged, she bails out mid-session, without apologizing. Her therapist is played brilliantly by guest star, Amy Madigan, who you know from her work on Carnivale.
Webber scolds Bailey, for keeping her residents at the hospital for nearly two weeks straight, competing in a surgical contest. Meredith, Cristina, and Izzie trash talk, and each confident that they’ll win the prize. George has no idea what they’re talking about (since he’s still an intern). Don’t worry, George. We have no idea either!...............cont'd

'Grey's Anatomy': The Claws Come Out
As the residents compete in a top-surgeon contest, Meredith discovers that a bear attack victim also has a brain tumor
If I were in this episode, Meredith would be forced to narrate something about how I'm like, I don't know, some kind of woodland creature who has come out of hibernation only to find that the seed and berry crop is still kind of sparse but hopefully I can survive until next week. Which is to say: This heavy-handed episode full of animal metaphors and almost zero character development? As the comeback episode after our long, cold, strike-plagued winter? Not the least bit satisfying for me............cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': 'House' hunting - Apr 25 2008
Well, now we know what the writers of "Grey's Anatomy" were doing during the strike, when they weren't walking the picket lines of course. They were watching "House."

Last night marked the first new episode of "Grey's" in many, many months. Not content with beating its fellow medical drama out of the post-strike box by five days -- the first new "House" airs on Monday -- show runner Shonda Rhimes and her crack team of writers seem to be poking gentle fun, and paying some homage to, the strange powers of their rivals at Fox. First there was the resident's contest in which Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina (Sandra Oh), Alex (Justin Chambers) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) competed for points based on things like number of sutures stitched or surgeries scrubbed in on. It looked suspiciously like the competition Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) set up last season to choose a new diagnostics team, especially since "solving a medical mystery" was assigned the highest point value.......cont’d

Residents get into a lion fight on 'Grey's' - April. 24, 2008
A surgery competition pits the residents against each other for the best cases, leaving patients to feel the ill effects.

She's a brainiac: Meredith was in her third therapy session after breaking up with McDreamy, but had yet to speak. Meredith treated a patient who was involved in a bear attack, and he introduced Mer to his new wife, who he said was his "rebound girl." A rebound girl? Like McDreamy's new gal, Rose? Meredith wondered if her patient's spontaneous marriage and odd decision to touch a bear cub -- which led to his brother getting attacked by the mother bear -- might have indicated a brain tumor. She was right, but it was too late to save her patient's life. Still, she won the surgery competition. More on that later............cont’d

Ask Matt - Monday, April 28, 2008
Could Kate Walsh Leave Private Practice? Is CSI on Its Last Leg? Will Fox's New Sci-Fi Shows Deliver? And More!

Question: Do you think there is any way Shonda Rhimes and the producers of Grey's Anatomy would consider making Addison a permanent fixture at Seattle Grace again? After all, Private Practice isn't called "Addison's Practice." The show could get on without her in my opinion, and I much prefer her on Grey's. How do you foresee Private Practice doing next year? Do you think the extended break will hurt its ratings? If so, Kate Walsh is guaranteed a spot back on Grey's, right? — Angela
Matt Roush: If Private Practice were to go under, I can't imagine why they wouldn't want Addison (Kate Walsh) back on Grey's, but I doubt they'll have to cross that bridge anytime soon. I'm not much of a fan of Private Practice (too silly to the point of asinine), but it was doing well enough, and the Grey's pedigree will inspire ABC to be very patient. But I liked her better on Grey's as well, and I am excited to see her returning as a special guest for this Thursday's episode. It's like Addison's IQ dropped in half (in inverse proportion to her libido) the minute she signed on at the Wellness Center. Private Practice is so smarmy it reminds me of Boston Legal with doctors, which is maybe what ABC was looking for. Anyway, the biggest question here is about all of the fall shows that got cut short by the strike but which will be relaunched in the fall: Practice, Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Chuck and Life. Will they be able to recover from the lost momentum of this punishingly long hiatus? In most cases (not so much this one), I hope so.

Episode Recap: Where the Wild Things Are - 04/24/08
Finally, a new episode of Grey’s Anatomy and it was well worth the wait! Even though it has been months since we last heard from the docs at Seattle Grace, in TV time it has only been six weeks since Meredith and Derek parted ways.

The night began with Meredith in her third therapy session with Dr. Wyatt (Amy Madigan). So far, the two of them have failed to have a meaningful conversation and just as Meredith was about to open up, her pager went off and just like that, Meredith was on her feet and out the door (once again escaping intimacy)!

Meanwhile, we find George and Lexie living in a rather beat up apartment, infested with cockroaches. Surprisingly, Lexie was unfazed by the creepy critters running rampant in their “new” place and she made a valiant effort to get George to see that with a little work, things could be better. Admittedly, I’m slightly concerned that she may become a serial kleptomaniac, but I was really impressed with the shabby chic makeover she busted out by the end of the show. Who would have thought underpads would make good placemats? And I bet Martha Stewart never thought to make a fruit bowl out of a bed pan! Nicely done, Lex.

On a more serious note, Seattle Grace was also dealing with a tragic accident tonight. A woman, her husband and his brother barely made it to the hospital after a bear attack. Meredith took a special interest in the one brother because she thought his irrational and impulsive behavior might be indicative of a tumor. In the end, she was right and the discovery led his wife to wonder if their recent quickie marriage was nothing more than a result of that tumor.

As the doctors raced to save lives, they were also racing to score points in a game judged by Bailey. Izzie ended up putting her patient, Otis (Cheech Marin), through numerous medical tests in the hopes that she might uncover a “medical mystery,” which was worth eighty points. Unfortunately for her, the only thing she uncovered was a possible case of the flu. Needless to say, Otis was not pleased that he had been treated like a test rat and he let her know it (and everyone else within shouting distance)!

Over the course of the last few weeks it would also appear that Erica and Callie have become good friends, much to the jealous dismay of Cristina. Although, Erica did ask Cristina at one point tonight if she wanted to stay in the operating room with her and observe her in surgery. While the opportunity cost Cristina points in the surgical game (viewing surgeries is only worth three points), that sacrifice may have scored her some personal points with Erica. Only time will tell.

In the relationship department, it looks like Rose and Derek are still seeing each other and Rose even blabbed to Lexie at one point that she thinks she’s in love. However, Mark made it clear to Derek that he doesn’t approve. In fact, Mark wins points with me for his innuendos and the elevator confessions he made to Derek tonight. Among those comments, Mark admitted that he was tired of waiting for Derek to cycle through his various love interests, even going so far as to say, “I thought it was going to be you and me…two guys on the prowl…”

In the end, Grey won the surgical contest (a sparkly pager that gives her first rights to surgeries for the next three months), but perhaps more importantly for her, she ended up back at Dr. Wyatt’s office---and as the show closed, we heard her say, “Okay, I think I better start talking now…” Something tells me this could be the beginning of the new Mer/Der journey.

There’s still so much more to say about tonight’s episode, but I really want to hear what all of you thought. Was it worth the wait in your eyes? Did anything surprise you tonight? Post your thoughts!

And until next time, here are some of my favorite lines of the night:

Lexie: “I’ve never even shoplifted a piece of gum before and now I’m a thief.”

George: “I complain a lot, don’t I? I need to focus on what’s good instead.”

George: “I wish you had stolen the TV’s.” Lexie: “I tried; they’re bolted to the walls.”

Izzie: “You see swollen ankles. I see medical mystery.”

The Chief: “You’re in a lion’s fight, Stevens. Just because you didn’t win, doesn’t mean you didn’t know how to roar.”

Mark: “You’re pathetic and I’m a lesser man for knowing you.”

Grey's Anatomy: Where The Wild Things Are - Apr 25th 2008
(S04E12) "C'mon, lady on the streets, tramp in the sheets. Am I right?" - Sloan

Hey! Remember this show? Grey's Anatomy hasn't had a new episode since January 10th. So naturally, I was pumped for this one. In fairness, though, I've felt that way about anything new since the writer's strike. Bit of a mixed bag here. Part of me loved it because like I said, it was new. But at the same time, the episode was still laden with far too much of the excessive over-dramatic crap that's plagued most of this season. At the most basic level, this show works. But Shonda Rhimes and Co. love to push it and the problem is that they're not always headed in the right direction.
It's been five (or was it six?) weeks since we last saw the doctors of Seattle Grace and a boatload of changes (most minor) have taken place. Let's break it down:

*
Derek and Rose: Derek and Rose are together still. But... no sex. She's waiting until they're serious. Sloan and Yang aren't fans of Roserek (Does that work? I couldn't come up with anything better.) and while it seems like they're happy, we all know it isn't going to last. Derek definitely seemed unsure when Sloan asked him if it was serious
*
Bailey: The divorce (or at least separation) from Tucker is permanent since she has her son with her at work. It seems like she just drops him off at hospital daycare every morning. I hope this gets explored though. There's no way this doesn't interfere with her work and I hope there are consequences. She did institute a surgical contest open to all first year residents though. I'll explain more later but the one question I had? Why did she do it? Despite the fact the Chief mentioned that it was something that happened every year, did Bailey start it up because of tradition or because she needed more help?
*
George and Lexie: They moved in together. I think there was a brief mention of it in the last episode. George needed to get away from Izzie and Lexie needed to get away from Thatcher. Small place. Dumpy. Not furnished very well. The real highlight was Lexie. It was comical really because her novelty (more like her purpose or place on the show) has completely dried up. She spent the entire episode stealing stuff from the hospital to help decorate the apartment. Bedpan for a fruit bowl. Excrement pads for place-mats. Classy. Seriously though - any scene with her in it was completely pointless. It's too bad because she started out as a good idea. But it seems like her character is slowly going the way of the other "new interns." Where'd they go anyway?
*
Meredith: She's quiet. Started going to see the hospital quack. But she doesn't talk. It's obvious that she's still hung up on Derek but she's thrown herself into the job to compensate for the loss. Her character actually made a lot development in this episode, but we'll get to that.
*
Izzie: She's bonkers. Still.
*
Callie and Hahn: They're BFF now. Clubbing. Dancing. Drinking. And snubbing Yang whenever they have a chance. Outside of the hospital anyway.
*
Cristina: Just as needy and driven as ever, she's still determined to learn everything she can from Hahn.
* The Chief, Alex, and Sloan: Nothing new with these three, although I was hoping there would have been some update on how Webber is doing with Adele.

Alright, with that out of the way, let's dive into the meat of the episode. Izzie first. I said she's bonkers because... well, she is. After the messes with Denny, George, and her attempt at cardio, she's lost faith in herself. (Sidebar: before I go on, I need to explain the contest. You get points for stuff. Winner gets a bejeweled pager that gives the owner first dibs on any surgery for the next three months. Point examples? 3 pts. for watching a new procedure; 3 pts. for each suture; 80 pts for solving a medical mystery. Only first year residents can play.) Izzie was obsessed with winning the contest. Cheech Marin guest starred as a guy with a broken ankle whom Izzie desperately wanted to be dying with some foreign disease she could diagnose.

This is sort of what I was talking about earlier, with the over-dramatic stuff. All the I'm dying junk, and we have the best doctors, and you'll live longer, blah blah. Remember that scene? It was just too over the top. Izzie is frequently like that though. It's annoying. She just wanted to win the contest to redeem herself and subjected poor Cheech to $120,000 worth of unnecessary medical tests. Her judgment is non-existent. To be honest, I was surprised Webber didn't yell at her near the end of the episode. He should have.

It's the show in general sometimes too. What's supposed to be spontaneous is forced. Take the beginning of the ep when Alex, Meredith, Bailey, and Yang were talking abut that next big trauma that's going to come in any second now. Then it did. That's not fun. It loses the punch when it's 100% predictable.

Moving on to Meredith. She was interesting to watch for once instead of being an endless buzzkill. The case du jour in this episode was a guy who pet a bear cub while camping. Momma bear came out of nowhere and attacked the guy's brother, who eventually died. The guy survived with a few severe claw wounds and his wife had some of her scalp peeled off, but she lived too. After hearing the story of how the wife was a trashy waitress and the guy married her after only ten days, Meredith immediately thought "tumor!" He pets bears and marries women he barely knows; pretty spontaneous behavior. Makes sense I guess. The cryptic thing about it is that we never really knew what Meredith's endgame was. Did she just want to win the contest (she did as a result) or was she just bent on the idea that no one can have love if she can't? Either seemed plausible.

By the end of the episode, it became clear that it was neither. She didn't care about the contest since she ignored the sparkly beeper when it went off and she isn't bitter about love because she went to Derek to ask for his help. She's just concerned with saving lives. It's going to be interesting to see how her clinical studies of people with brain tumors goes. Should create some tension since it wedges Mer right between Rose and Derek.

More thoughts...

* How funny is it that outside of work, Hahn and Callie are bitches to Cristina? They're the cool kids table and Yang isn't invited. I love it.
* Is Sloan really having trouble getting laid? If so, that's a riot too. Especially if he truly need Derek as his wing man to score. Is he done pursuing Hahn?
* What was with all the pep talks that The Chief gave to Alex and Izzie? I mentioned it already, but I wouldn't mind seeing him act less fatherly.
* I really hope iGeorge is dead. There still seems to be a ton of tension between them. It's to be expected, but I just hope if doesn't lead to more awkwardness. That was some painful stuff to watch.
* "Intestines in the hand" was not nearly as exciting as it should have been since I saw the promo with that line in it no less that 200 times over the last three weeks on ABC.
* Since this show is all about cool nicknames, I'm going to start referring to Hahn as LITB, which I realize is not any shorter to type, but it is short for "lotion in the basket." Raise your hand if you get it.
* Cheech Marin is a funny man.

One down and four to go. Five if you're counting hours - the finale is a double. I'm on the fence about this one. As I said, the "new" factor is huge here. But as you can see, there was still plenty to gripe about. The show just isn't where it used to be... that may change next week though. Kate Walsh is back (Private Practice is on hiatus until next season) and hopefully that means we get a mini-renaissance from Grey's.

'Grey's Anatomy': Medical Mystery Tour - April 24, 09:43 PM
Welcome back, Grey's Anatomy. I'd missed your particular brand of neurotic self-involvement, combined with some gross-out surgeries. I love the smell of surgical gloves in the evening.

Many many points for spoilers ahead...

I would like to offer up a solid huzzah! to Meredith for getting into much-needed therapy. If there's ever been anyone who needed it, it's her. Even if she does go and sit with her eyes filled with tears, not saying anything. Three cheers for making an effort to untangle the many many issues.

Meredith's in the middle of not saying anything to her therapist (Amy Madigan), when her beeper goes of. "I've got to go," she says. "I'm in this contest." Where have I heard that before? Ah yes. Thankfully, this is an entirely different kind of contest.

It's a surgical contest, which has had the residents living in the hospital for the past 14 days. There's a point system. And it's both ghoulish and awesome. The Chief, wearing a genuinely frightening pinkish-lavender shirt/sweater combo that I think I last saw in a JC Penney catalog, but never on a real-life person, confronts Bailey -- who pretends to know nothing about it. And how cute is lil' Tuck?......cont'd

RATINGS

'Grey's' pulse is weaker, but still beats all - Sun Apr 27, 2008
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Led by the return of "Grey's Anatomy," ABC's full drama lineup resumed its Thursday run and ruled the opening night of the May sweep despite some distressing viewership drops for the network and its competitors.
"Grey's" (16 million viewers, 6.3 rating/15 share among adults 18-49) and its "Ugly Betty" lead-in (8.5 million, 2.5/8), both had their lowest first-run rating ever. "Grey's" nonetheless was the highest-rated scripted telecast since an episode of "House" aired in February.
Moved to 10 p.m., "Lost" (12.4 million, 5.5/14) benefited from its best lead-in this season and remained on par with previous performances despite airing at a later hour.
If ABC had some wince-inducing drops, the network had plenty of company. CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (16.7 million, 4.6/11) and NBC's "My Name Is Earl" (6.1 million, 2.3/7), "The Office" (7.6 million, 3.9/10) and "ER" (7.3 million, 2.9/8) all hit season -- if not series -- lows amid the increased competition.
CBS came in second for the evening, with "Survivor" winning at 8 p.m. (13 million, 4.2/13). At 10 p.m., "Without a Trace" (13.5 million, 3.3/9) was below average.
NBC was third, with "Scrubs" shifted to 8:30 p.m. (5.3 million, 2.4/7). Losing its "Office" lead-in, "Scrubs" dropped 27% from its 9:30 p.m. average. In the former "Scrubs" slot, "30 Rock" (5.5 million, 2.8/7) had the upside of a stronger lead-in but faced greater competition, resulting in an on-par draw with its previous average.
In fourth, Fox had back-to-back episodes of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" (averaging 8.6 million, 2.3/6). The CW aired back-to-back episodes of "Smallville" (averaging 2.9 million, 1.2/3).

Ellen Pompeo of 'Grey's Anatomy' Ellen Pompeo of 'Grey's Anatomy' Fast National ratings for Thursday, April 24, 2008

Thursday's ratings race was highly competitive, but top finishers CBS and ABC were battling over a smaller audience than they were early in the season.

CBS took the overall crown with a 9.2 rating/15 share, beating ABC, 8.1/13. FOX took third with a 5.3/8. NBC's 4.3/7 was good for fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.8/3. Across the board, though, those numbers are down from their pre-strike levels for original episodes.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, ABC led the way with a 4.8 rating. CBS finished second at 4.0. NBC came in third with a 2.9, topping FOX's 2.3. The CW drew a 1.2.

"Survivor: Micronesia - Fans vs. Favorites" (7.9/13) gave CBS the lead at 8 p.m. ABC's "Ugly Betty" returned with a 6.0/10, beating FOX's "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" for second. "My Name Is Earl," 4.0/7, and "Scrubs," 3.5/6, were fourth for NBC. "Smallville" scored a 2.1/4 for The CW.

At 9 p.m., "Grey's Anatomy" led in households for ABC with a 10.7/16, but "CSI," 10.5/16, brought more total viewers to CBS (16.74 million to 16.02 million for ABC). "Don't Forget the Lyrics," 5.4/8, kept FOX in third. NBC improved a little with "The Office," 4.6/7, and "30 Rock," 3.5/5. "Supernatural" closed the evening for The CW.

CBS' "Without a Trace," 9.2/15, drew the biggest overall audience at 10 p.m. ABC, however, had a sizable adults 18-49 lead with "Lost," 7.6/13. "ER" delivered a 5.1/8 for NBC.

The 9 p.m. hour featured the return of the battle of CBS’ CSI versus Grey’s Anatomy on ABC in originals. CSI was first in the overnights (11.4/15), 11 percent above Grey’s Anatomy (10.3/16). But Grey’s Anatomy will, of course, dominate among adults 18-49. Year-to-year, both dramas remain on the downside: CSI by 12 percent in the overnights last night (11.4/15 vs. 13.0/20 on April 26, 2007) and Grey’s Anatomy by 23 percent (10.3/16 vs. 13.3/20).

GREY'S ANATOMY - March 21, 2008
APRIL 24  9 PM  ABC
EPISODES LEFT: 5
WHERE WE LEFT OFF: Derek (Patrick Dempsey) had to deal with fallout from his kiss with Rose (Lauren Stamile); Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) put the brakes on Derek's plans for ''their'' house; and Hahn (Brooke Smith) told McSteamy (Eric Dane) she's not into office romances. Also, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) watched a faith healer save her child, while George (T.R. Knight) declared that he was determined to rediscover ''the man that Bailey named her baby after.''

UP NEXT: George will move toward ''becoming that guy,'' reveals Grey's exec producer Shonda Rhimes, which is a huge relief to T.R. Knight: ''He's been such a mess for so long, making weird choices, it'll be nice to see him grow up a little quicker.'' Helping him get there? The Chief (James Pickens Jr.), who will take George under his wing. Christina (Sandra Oh), meanwhile, will have her own professional crisis over being Hahn's resident, and Ava/Rebecca (Elizabeth Reaser) will be back for three episodes. Also making a brief return: Addison (Kate Walsh). ''There are a couple of surgeries only she can perform,'' says Rhimes, ''and there are a lot of relationships only she has. It's going to be a very significant visit for a lot of the characters — particularly Addison.'' And we've saved the best for last: While Rose is returning for all five episodes, Meredith and McDreamy will be getting together ''for good,'' says Rhimes. ''The goal was not always to get them together at the end of the season, but that is my goal now.''

Grey’s Creator: I Have a McDream

Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Shonda Rhimes is promising big developments when her ABC drama returns April 24. Before Grey’s went on an unplanned three-month break due to the Writers Guild strike, Rhimes and her staff were gradually bringing Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) back together, despite interference from nurse Rose (Lauren Stamile). Now, with production finally ramping up for the season’s five remaining episodes, Rhimes says she’s more determined than ever to reunite the hit show’s core couple by the end of the season. “My goal is to get Meredith and Derek together for good and let them try to figure out what it is to be in a relationship in the future,” she says. “Before, it was, Can we do this and make it work? And now it’s Not only can we do it and make it work, but watch what happens: It’s going to be incredibly interesting.” And a little scary, too. Grey’s star T.R. Knight, who plays surgical intern George O’Malley, is a bit nervous about going back to the set. “Normally after a hiatus, the first week I don’t know how to act, or I know how to act even less than I normally know how to act,” he says. “You’re very much getting your sea legs. You’re going, What language is this?” Don’t worry, T.R., they’ll have you speaking McEnglish again in no time. - Ari Karpel

Grey's Anatomy: Where Were We? (Part 1) - Apr 16, 2008 9:47
This is the first in a series of six Grey's refreshers to get you back up to speed before the show's April 24 return. Each recap will focus on one of the many couples at Seattle Grace. So why not kick it off with the most on-again/off-again couple on television, Meredith and Derek?

The Couple: Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)
Where They Were: Meredith informed McDreamy that the duo was indeed broken up following her little speech at Burke and Yang's almost wedding, but she did allow a breakup kiss. And then some breakup sex. And then lots and lots of breakup sex. Derek realizes his desire for commitment makes Meredith want to run, but he tells her he'll wait for her to be ready. But what if someone else comes along? Meredith finally decides to tell Derek she doesn't want him to see other people, but chickens out when she has the chance. Rose, the scrub nurse who's been making eyes at Derek, saves the day by repairing a computer during one of his surgeries. When they exchange compliments, Derek kisses Rose, but he doesn't tell Meredith about the kiss because she finally commits to him by asking him not to date. When Derek shows Meredith house plans, her lack of enthusiasm proves she's not as committed as she said, but he tells Rose he must see the relationship through regardless. But when George spills the beans about Derek and Rose's kiss, the couple breaks up (again), and Derek asks Rose to dinner.

Where They're Headed: Despite their roller-coaster love affair, creator Shonda Rhimes has told us that she sees Mer and Der together for good by the end of the season. Whether or not we can expect a ring or even a wedding is still up in the air, and there is still plenty of doubt among viewers. Luckily, if things work out, Derek still has those house plans!

Possible Roadblocks: Though she'll probably be wilted by Derek's back-and-forth attitude, Rose could still definitely be a thorn in Meredith's side. Plus, let's not forget that, at least to this point, the Grey's writers have found it impossible for any couple in the confines of Seattle Grace to be happy together for any consistent period of time. Could a bit of sunshine actually pierce through those rainy Seattle clouds? We'll find out soon enough! — Adam Bryant

Grey's Anatomy's George and Izzie: Where Were We? - Apr 17, 2008
Our series of Grey's refreshers continues with a look at the highly controversial pairing of George and Izzie.

The Couple: George (T.R. Knight) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl)

Where They Were: From the beginning of the show, George and Izzie have always been there for each other, especially when an STD (the syph) or LVAD wire-cutting was involved. The real test in their friendship came after George's dad died. George was so messed up that he flew to Vegas to marry Callie, again proving he isn't the sharpest scalpel in the OR. Despite the damage the marriage did to his friendship with Izzie, it only took one night of poor decisions to send George and Izzie spiraling toward a bad, bad (naughty bad) place. After some hot, drunken sex, Izzie and George realized that maybe what they've been looking for was right in front of them all along. The pair confessed their feelings for one another, and George ended his marriage with Callie. But there's just one problem: The couple's had some serious trouble recreating the hot sex they had that first time around. Whether they are both too tired or they're fumbling around in the bathtub (which they will "never speak of again"), George and Izzie have proven that they're both still interns when it comes to bedside manner.

Where They're Headed: Izzie and George agreed that their timing was off and that they don't have the right chemistry as a "couple." It's going to be interesting to see if they can maintain the same level of intimacy in a friendship. Maybe they'll be best together as f--k buddies — after work they can hit Joe's and then stumble home together for more steamy romps, and then act like everything is normal the next day!

Possible Roadblocks: Callie could pop up pregnant (pure speculation) or at the very least make George and Izzie's time on duty a living hell. And it wouldn't be Grey's if new love interests from the mind of Shonda didn't pop up to throw a possible glitch into future "Gizzie" hookups. Also, do we think Alex and Izzie are over for good? No way. Should Ava dump Alex for good, he'd be back on the Izzie train in a flash — but this time, for the right reasons. — Erin Fox

Matt Roush - Monday, March 31, 2008
Roush on Grey's Anatomy
Question: Recently in a TV Guide online interview, Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes said about the future of the show's lead couple Meredith and Derek: "I am pretty dedicated to the idea that Meredith and Derek are to be together for good by the end of this season." But in another interview online, when asked about the couple uniting, she said, "Meredith and Derek should either be over by the end of the season, or she should make it on her own." Are the uneven messages by Rhimes intentional, or do you feel she really has a stable relationship in the works for our favorite TV couple? The mixed answers to the same question make it seem like she's just trying to create buzz and ratings at the fans' expense. How do you feel about Rhimes' early spoilers, given that she almost never gives them out? Is this too good to be true? — Amy J.
Matt Roush: She could be toying with us, I suppose, but the quote she gave TV Guide (which appears in our current Returning Favorites double issue, on stands now; don't miss it or the awesome gatefold cover) seems to represent where the show is heading once it returns for its remaining five hours in late April. Sounds to me like she's listening to fan unrest again, and while Meredith and Derek undoubtedly have major emotional issues still to sort out, the appetite is huge for the writers not to throw contrived curveballs in their way (like, say, Rose). As always, I prefer not to judge a show on its hype, but on what's actually on screen, so let's just wait and see. But some of the other information in the Grey's article in our issue made me hopeful and eager for what's to come.

From the TV Guide printed edition dated March 31st-April 13th (not many new details)
Where we left off:

Dreamy doctor decided to build his dream house, but Meredith faltered in sharing in with him, especially after George inadvertently revealed that Derek made out with nurse Rose. Izzie and George were in romantic limbo after their affair broke up his marriage. Mer's half sister Lexie, was hooking up on and off with Alex who'd also been hooking up with his former patient Ava. After a nearly tragic accident involving her son and a bookcase, Bailey blamed her husband, who is now moving out.

What's next:
"When we come back, we'll have leapt ahead five or six weeks in time," creator Shonda Rimes says. "It's our way of acknowledging the bump [caused by strike]. But it'll be very clear from the first moment what has transpired. You'll see where things stand with Derek, Meredith, and Rose. You'll see where George is living, and in the first episode all of the residents will be involved in a high-stakes surgical contest---definitely not something the chief would condone"

Hookup central:
"old relationships will become new again, some people you thought would never get together will, and there are going to be some interesting outside influences," Rhimes promises. George and Izzie have "put it to bed for the night. They've left it at the idea that it's not necessarily about the bad sex as [it is] the bad timing. What will be interesting to see is that the intimate explosion of events, [whether] they can be just friends." Pretty boy plastic surgeon Mark "McSteamy" Sloan will continue his pursuit of the hard-to-impress Dr. Hahn. "The way that is going to play out will be surprising to everyone, "Rhimes says. "Mark Sloan is not used to not getting what he wants."

The Mer-Der chronicles:
"I am pretty dedicated to the idea that they are going to be together for good this season," Rhimes says. "What's going to be interesting is how she gets her act together, and how they decide that this is it." Are those wedding bells we hear?!"I did not say there is going to be a wedding." Rhimes says. "Or a ring. Although I did not say there wasn't going to be a ring."

Flamethrower:
Addison will pop up at Seattle Grace to perform surgeries that only she can do and "discover whether you can ever really go home," Rhimes says.
