Grey’s Anatomy Cast in All-Star ABC GLAAD PSA - Oct. 12th, 2008
Stars from several ABC shows teamed up for an all-star Public Service Announcement for GLAAD.org in honor of National Coming Out Day. These stars include Sara Ramirez and T.R. Knight from Grey’s Anatomy, Kate Walsh from Private Practice, Ana Ortiz, Michael Urie, Rebecca Romijn, Eric Mabius, and Becki Newton from Ugly Betty, and Rachel Griffiths from Brothers & Sisters.
Their message is the following:
“Words can be a powerful weapon. So please, choose them carefully because what you say matters. When you tell a homophobic joker or use an anti-gay slurs, you’re spreading prejudice. And you can be hurting someone who close to you without even realizing it. These words send a message that it’s ok to hate and to discriminate. You have a power to make a difference just by treating people with dignity and respect. Choose to be an ally and a friend.”

Book review of the Unauthorized Symbols and Metaphors Book.

A View from the Other Side (Symbols and Metaphors)

Shonda Rhimes likes symmetry. She has said so several times. But, looking back now after reading Grey's Anatomy: An Unauthorized View from the Other Side, that may very well be THE understatement of the millennium. In fact, I'm pretty convinced that she is obsessed with symmetry. Anne Dawes and Helen Dina, the authors of View from the Other Side, have gone through and looked at the first 66 episodes of Grey's Anatomy in a way that is completely amazing and will, I assure you, bring you an entirely new appreciation to the series.

The book is a comprehensive look into the symbolism, metaphors, and symmetry in the first three seasons of Grey's Anatomy, along with the first five episodes of season four (which makes sense, considering storylines "bleed" from season to season). The brilliant authors show us what births signal, how the episodes from season one dictate the storylines of each following season, and so much more.

As the authors are careful to point out, their views are only one way of looking at the series, and it isn't a complete one. They don't discuss EVERY storyline (as there are way too many to cover, obviously). In fact, most of the discussion of the book deals with Meredith, and the MerDer relationship.

It is a little bit difficult to get into the book at first, and at first glance it seems overwhelming and confusing. But I promise you that if you stick with it, you will become thoroughly engaged in their views and be absolutely fascinated with the book, just as I was.

The only thing they did not include that wouldn't been really neat to read are their predictions for future seasons. Yes, they do include some predictions for the remainder of season four - all of which appear as though they will be coming true - but it would've been neat to read more.

The book, overall, is a fascinating read and really shows another side to this groundbreaking series. We can only hope that the awesome authors will continue to provide insight into the "other side" and continue these interpretations in another book down the road.

From Kristin at the Upfronts, from her interview with Stephen MacPherson:

Grey's Anatomy Is Planning Something Big: "Grey's has got a big idea for next year that Shonda's getting ready to launch on people," says McPherson, but wouldn't go into further detail (shocker). "But the other shows we feel like are firing on really good waves so there's no big kind of shift." (Read into that transition what you will.)

New York Times - Fashion and Style - October 28, 2007
What Did You Call It? ----- THIS is the story of how a silly-sounding word reached the ear of a powerful television producer, and in only seconds of air time, expanded the vocabularies — for better or worse — of legions of women.

It began on Feb. 12, 2006, when viewers of the ABC series “Grey’s Anatomy” heard the character Miranda Bailey, a pregnant doctor who had gone into labor, admonish a male intern, “Stop looking at my vajayjay.”

The line sprang from an executive producer’s need to mollify standards and practices executives who wanted the script to include fewer mentions of the word vagina.
