PORTRAIT Patrick Dempsey – the TV doctor that makes women’s hearts palpitate
Page 1
PATRICK DEMPSEY
plays the neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd in the TV series “Grey’s Anatomy.” When he picks up a scalpel, his fans become seized with tachychardia and faintness. The diagnosis: They have caught the McDreamy disease.

Women love surprises and Patrick Dempsey is a surprise. He came out of nowhere gaining the love of female viewers just a few seconds after the beginning of the series “Grey’s Anatomy,” in 2005, in a scene in which the TV doctor popped up stretched out on a couch, dressed only with a cushion, next to Meredith Grey, with whom he spent the night. We admit it: this unknown had all the characteristics needed to become a women’s idol: ruffled hair like that of kids that build treehouses and dams in streams, a three day beard that at the same time makes him seem virile, rough and fragile due to overwork, blue eyes and naturally narrow hips that keep his loose surgeon’s scrubs as much as a peg used by mountaineers on the north wall of the Eiger. Today, three years later, Patrick Dempsey is one of the most sought after ..Hollywood.. stars. For the part of Doctor Derek Shepherd, the role which – as per his contract – he will continue to play on our TV screens until 2010, the 43 year old has gotten 2 Golden Globe nominations for best actor in a TV drama, and he can also be found catapulted onto the big screen: romantic films such as “Made of Honour” (lit. the love of a witness [in a wedding sense) with Michelle Monaghan or the comedy “Enchanted” (lit. Like a Spell) with Amy Adams have done nothing other than consolidate his image as an ideal man.

If Patrick Dempsey appears completely predictable in the roles he plays, in his private life he is absolutely unpredictable. He married for the first time when he was 21 years old. His marriage to Rochelle “Rocky” Parker, mother of his best friend and his agent, not to mention the fact that she’s 27 years older than him, ended in 1994. Today, when the mother-son relationship that has some to characterise his first marriage is mentioned, he responds jokingly “I probably saw “The Graduate” too many times.” Patrick Dempsey has learnt the lessons of his first marriage - not exactly one of fidelity - and doesn’t intend to make the same mistakes with his second wife Jillian Fink. “Our relationship has been great from the beginning, but that doesn’t mean you should stop working on it.” Patrick and the stylist/Avon creative director have been happily married for ten years, although they began a little roughly: “Our wedding photographers were so drunk that the photos came out pretty unfocussed,” he says laughing. But if the reception was turbulent, the marriage is perfectly balanced and exemplary. “The love of my wife allows me to be myself and to relax,” he states happily during interviews. If the fascinating once heartthrob has also become a dear father, it’s due to the birth of his three children (daughter Tallulah Fyfe, 6, and the twins Darby Galen and Sullivan Patrick, 1). “One day my daughter said to me, ‘You’re really handsome, Daddy.’ Well, it was the best compliment I’ve ever received.”

Other than his roles as actor, father and husband, Dempsey cultivates a very particular hobby: he loves car racing. He races for “Vision Racing Team” in the Panoz GT Pro Raving series and dreams of one day finding himself on the starting grid at ....Le Mans..... For him, the adrenaline is the best way to escape from the trials of daily life. “When you’re racing, you’re concentrating 100 per cent on what you’re doing, and this has a calming effect. Moreover, I love challenges because they teach you to be humble.” And his house, an enormous ranch in ....Maine.... (the state in which he was born), like with the cars, is another example of how he likes to do things big. There are six Jaguars and two Porsches parked in his garage, and for his 40th birthday his wife Jill gave him an elegant Mercedes 280 SL. In general, style is very important to Patrick Dempsey. “I like timeless elegance, to wear well made suits and shirts with cufflinks. In ten years I want to be able to look at my old photos and see a person who’s not running behind all the fads.” As a Versace model, he doesn’t run this risk. Already last year, he was shown in a leather vest and tight and sexy suits in the glamorous Italian fashion house’s publicity campaign. Into 2009, he will continue to be the face of its men’s line. And to think that he – surprise! – is still not really happy with his looks. For 3 years he’s found himself in second place in the list of the world’s sexiest men – once behind Matthew McConaughey, another behind George Clooney, and another after Matt Damon. “My face isn’t perfect, I’ve broken my nose three times, so it’s completely crooked” he observes laconically with a sigh after the third defeat. “Whatever I do, I’ll always be the bridesmaid, never the bride.”

The fact that Patrick Dempsey has become part of this exclusive circle of most loved men almost seems to be by chance. In effect, after he at first entertained the dream of a career as a skier, at 15 he decided to become a clown: he learnt to juggle and to ride a unicycle, and he came third in the “National Competition of Jugglers.” A clown’s red nose instead of a broken one? It certainly wouldn’t have been enough to enter the list of the world’s sexiest men! At 17, as he himself tells it, he left, with a certain ingenuity, for ....New York.... to enrol in an acting course. Following the first theatre tours came other roles as the young charmer, as well as the opposite such as in the light comedy “Can’t Buy Me Love” (lit. playboy in training). Then there was a period of silence. He was about to give up and change jobs, but he decided to try one last casting. He would have accepted any part he was given in the new TV medical series “Grey’s Anatomy.” But instead, he became the fascinating doctor Derek Shepherd – aka McDreamy – who follows in the footsteps of the most handsome TV doctor: George Clooney. Like him, Patrick Dempsey also know an “up” can follow a “down.” ....Hollywood.... is a rather lunatic diva. She’ll fall in love with you really quickly, but will toss you aside just as fast.”

While he takes advantage of the opportunities that are offered to him by the dream factory, he’s not about to renounce his principles. He wouldn’t, for example, be in an action-thriller full of blood. For his kids and “because the world is already full of blood.” The mild TV doctor, in fact, is also in real life a mild person that tries to help others. After his mother Amanda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer – which in the meantime she has fortunately beaten – he founded the “Patrick Dempsey Centre for Cancer Hope and Healing.” It was a huge shock. “For my family the diagnosis was devastating. Many of the internet sites I looked at didn’t give me the information I was after” laments Dempsey. It was for this reason that he decided to found a centre for patients and their families in which they could find help and words of comfort and encouragement. To show how much three years of “Grey’s Anatomy” has had an effect on him, he presents his favourite story that he loves to tell in nearly every interview: My daughter fell and she wounded her chin. The doctor was about to stitch it up but I told him for these types of cases there’s a special glue. The doctor, visibly impressed, listened to his TV neurosurgeon colleague and used the glue. McDreamy – and this is the surprising thing – is in fact so brilliant that as well as producing a narcotic state in women, he also convinces the most expert doctors.
