PODCAST

Thanks to Windspirits @ TWoP

Been awhile since there's been a podcast. How did the crossover first come up - no idea how they would do it, would writers from Prp write those characters, would we write ours? Shonda came into the writers room and said how cool would it be to do a crossover with Grey's and Private? So suddenly we had like 3 episodes, had to figure out logistically, blah, blah. Private way ahead. We felt we had an amazing opportunity to have all these people that Derek went to med school with that he hadn't seen in years to come back into his life, to reveal something new and fun about Derek. That's where we came up with the idea. Someone in the writers room said they had been to a wedding right out of college, the best wedding they had ever been too. The groom sung a song to the bride, a ballad about their relationship that was cheesey and yet romantic. Years after, everytime they saw this couple they would make him sing the song. We were like OMG we have to have Derek do that. Krista Vernoff wrote the song, it became a funny backbone throughout the episode. Sort of sweet and nostalgic. One of the favorite scenes is at the end, after we saw what Derek and Addison went through in season 2 and saw that they geniunely had love for each other and what's its become now. Completely leading different lives and they've totatlly moved on with different people - to hear the song is kind of a sobering moment. It was surprisingly sad. Sad for all, we all thought we were going to be together and stay go together and look what happened. None of them have talked to Derek in years, you realize they chose sides in the divorce, they remained friends with Addison. The scene between Sam and Derek - Patrick was awesome, Derek says he should have called more. You felt OMG these were 2 like fantastic college friends and they lost each other cause of the Derek/Addison thing. Its sort of like when you are looking through old pictures from college or something and these friends that you lived with and talked to every day and you get the feeling you need to call them right now. Loved the idea of the nostalgia and the bittersweetness of it all. Blah, blah about Taye and Audra singing.

Last night's episode - its been 3 days since he killed Jen. The first image is his bare feet with a bizarely amount of takeout food, like all the guy has been doing is eating. So bizarre to see Derek Shepherd in his jammies on the couch eating out of a cereal box unshaven. Its so tragic. Blah, blah about cereal. Lucky Charms, etc.

He's all dark and tortured, hasn't been into the hospital in 3 days. The scene with the folders, he's staring at the lives he's saved and those he didn't and its hitting him, he's just not going to go back in that OR. In that moment, Meredith says all of the right things. People come to you who would have died anyway, etc. Should make him feel better but he is in the darkest hole and can't hear it. He knows all that, he'd be the guy normally telling that to someone. In the writer's room they talked about it - he made a simple mistake, its a complication, something a patient is warned about. But its something he feels he shouldn't have done. Messes with his head for someone so professional and so together. Its heartbreaking to watch him unravel, his confidence and his faith in himself. You just get self loathing from his performance. He's angry at himself, he sort of takes it out on Meredith at the end, let's talk about the end. Shonda months and months, we talked about the engagement, about Ma..ma Shepherd and the ring and its all romantic. Then out of the blue Shonda says and then he'll throw it in her face and there was dead silence in the writers room. She's always thinking 10 steps ahead. At the table ring, when Derek says the things and throws the rings there was an audible gasp, tells you how good it was. Shonda was right it comes out of his anger, he's pushing away the last person which is what you do when you are tortured

Meredith is the only person that gets it, she says that's as good as you got? Another girl may have fallen apart if a guy takes a bat and hits her ring into the woods. But for Meredith, she has been so much darker, so much worse, so much drunker then him, this is nothing. Kind of nice that Meredith can be there for him, he's always the strong one. We wanted to play with that, its interesting where it will go. They loved doing that scene. He was very good at hitting the beer cans with the bat, he even hit the ring in a couple of takes. He's very athletic. Blah, blah about hitting with a bat.

Izzie - omg, sunscreen. Blah blah about how pale they are, they have freckles. Now they went to the dermatologist. Blah, blah, Jenna is wearing sunscreen.

We got her diagnosis of patient X. In her brain, her liver, has been causing her hallucinations of Denny. Its just so sad. When she talked to Lexie, was so sad. Lexie is hopeful, about her mom dying of the hiccups. When you get a diagnosis like that you fight. It took Lexie to say that to jolt Izzie. Shonda came up with the idea early in the season that Izzie would tell Cristina. Cristina is the scientist, the robot. The love the moment when Iz says "you don't like me", that's why Izzie can tell her, someone that won't fall apart. She can't tell people that love her, she will have to comfort them. She needs strength and support and the only one that can really do that in this moment is Cristina. We will have to see now that Cristina knows, how does this unfold, how they deal with it, obviously its going to have reprecussions all over the place. Its one of their own, one of their main people to get this dire diagnosis is going to rock everybody's world. Its pretty awesome. Just at the time when she and Alex are happy. How great is Alex? He was Joan's favorite in the episode. Justin Chambers is so excited about every script, willing to jump into whatever you ask of him. The freak out scene - he was like OK, I don't know how I am going to do this, getting to that point. He's such a guy but he's so willing to go there, be vulnerable but in the Alex way. It was very dramatic. Talk about the paddles bouncing when they fell blah blah.

Back to other episode - Faye Dunaway! Blah, blah about getting Faye Dunaway, OMG! I might see Faye Dunaway in person. She was so amazing and so prepared. More Faye a..ss kissing.

Shonda also had the great idea of Bailey calling in Adele and tattling on the Chief, OMG. The funniest thing is when Bailey is all smiling in the corner then Adele looks at her and is like "you too!". Shame on you. Bailey had no other choice. Richard had a temper tantrum in the OR, pretty much stomping his feet then ignored her after, refused to talk to her. Bailey had to call in the big guns and that was Adele. No one can talk to the Chief like that except for Adele. She called his hospital a jungle gym.

Bailey and her decision to go into Peds, we're going to see that in the next couple of weeks as well as find out what happens with Izzie. And, how we deal with Derek, how do we get him back to the OR. Its not going to be easy. Its pretty awesome how it all unfolds. So you have to watch, its going to be good. Really good. Like REALLY good, let's be honest. This is Joan Rater. And Jenna Bans. Thanks
