Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.14 "Beat Your Heart Out" Recap -February 05, 2009
Grey's Anatomy opens tonight with some establishing shots of early morning Seattle. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) is practicing medicine on herself in the clinic, and you know that wacky hijinx are going to ensue because the music is all happy and peppy, instead of OMG-I'm-Going-Crazy crazy. In come her troupe of interns, who have been at Seattle Grace long enough to resent having to be assigned to clinic duty (flu shots and enemas) with Izzie instead of cutting people open. Izzie dramatically draws the curtain open, startling the interns in mid-grumble, and glares at the lot of them. Meanwhile, Cristina (Sandra Oh) opens the door to an on-call room and wakes up Major McHottie (Kevin McKidd), who was napping shirtless. They make awkward, but they share a moment when he shows that he notices little things about her. He suggests that she wear her hair up because he likes seeing the back of her neck. After he leaves the room, she rubs the back of her neck with a smile on her face.
Lexie (Chyler Leigh) is having a hard time keeping her new relationship with Mark a secret. Callie (Sara Ramirez), who has a smashing new haircut with bangs, is the only other person who knows (except for Sadie), so Lexie tries to talk about how much she likes Mark to her, but Callie shuts her down immediate with: "Alone people don't want to hear about the together people, OK? Even if the alone people are alone by choice. It's sort of mean. It's sort of like bringing a six-pack to an AA meeting." ........there’s more

Grey's Anatomy' Spoilers - February 03, 2009
There wasn't a new episode of Grey's Anatomy last week so its fans had a couple of weeks to wait until the storylines get moving forward yet again (yes, right after they picked up pace during the last few episodes). To fill in that gap, Entertainment Weekly, courtesy of Michael Ausiello, reports that a lot will happen on Seattle Grace, things that will remind old Grey's fans of the good old times and resolve this similarly old blasted Denny storyline once and for all.
Getting it out of the way, EW says that Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) will, finally, get the blinding flash of the obvious. Denny (guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was dropping hints like crazy, and we will get our first clues as to what Izzie is inflicted with exactly, other than perpetual and at times annoying perkiness.

As for those Grey's fans who were reminiscing of the good old days courtesy of the apartment scene on the eve of McMommy's arrival, Thursday's episode will supposedly feature “one of the funniest, all-female group hugs yet” plus a not-so-pleasant (but still hilarious) cafeteria scene and some girl-on-girl action. There were reports before that Arizona Robbins (guest star Jessica Capshaw) will potentially be a new love interest for Callie (Sara Ramirez). Capshaw is on Seattle Grace for just three episodes, but the girl was on The L Word so she must have some experience on the field.

Meanwhile, some of my fears are starting to come true, if Ausiello is to believed. There will be “lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes” between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd), complicated by the fact that a woman from Owen's past will come a-knocking.

Finally, some news that won't sink well with the already edgy George (T.R. Knight) fans. George will reportedly be on screen for a grand total of – 10 seconds

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - Beat Your Heart Out - Feb 5, 2009
..............................................................
Derek is still trying to figure out a way to propose to Meredith. He’s scared to come on too strong and spook Meredith, but he also wants it to be special, so he asks or advice and gets lots of it – although much of it is conflicting. Cristina thinks he shouldn’t make a big deal out of it, the Chief thinks he should make a huge deal out of it. Meredith make mention that their kids will be cute, which Derek finds encouraging, but he also continuously ends conversations on his proposal plans when she shows up, which makes her think that he’s freaking out and doesn’t want her kids with her damaged Alzheimers-prone DNA.

Derek seems to take The Chief’s advice and enlists Sloane to help him spread rose petals, hearts, and teddy bears all over the bedroom in anticipation. Just after Sloane leaves, Derek’s phone rings. It’s Addison, which kicks off the crossover with “Private Practice”. See this week’s “Private Practice” recap for the other side of that phone call.

When Meredith gets home, Derek is gone and the room is immaculate once again, except for a rose petal under the pillow. Expect this to have ramifications next week.

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Rules of Engagement - Feb 6, 2009
From Derek's prep to propose to Hunt's seduction of Cristina to Mark and Lexie's maybe-relationship, Seattle Grace is all about taking things to the next level
So we're Denny-free now, which is progress...though we've still got some dead weight bouncing around Seattle Grace, not to mention some hit-and-miss story lines. Here, the good and bad of this week's Grey's Anatomy:

Good: Derek's impending proposal Sure, it was a little out of character for Meredith to offhandedly remark, after observing a couple who'd just checked in (the lovely Jennifer Westfeldt as a pregnant woman and the husband she'd just accidentally run over) that they'd have cute babies. ''Not as cute as ours, but...cute.'' But it's nice to see Mer progress, and I do think it's cool that she and Derek play the role reversal — he wants to settle down, she's scared — so well. And the bit where all the boys were talking about how he was going to propose, and then they had to play it off like they were talking work (''Not if you don't want a...hematoma!'' followed by a bellow of laughter) — pretty cute, really. Meredith subsequently freaked out because she could tell he'd been acting weird since the baby comment, and she wondered if perhaps he just didn't want to have babies with her: ''My babies will have Alzheimer's and suicidal tendencies and split ends.'' Of course, that wasn't the case — but you've gotta give Mer credit for self-awareness, at least.

“Grey’s Anatomy”: Rules of engagement - Feb 6 2009
Love was definitely in the air on last night’s entertaining (and fully Denny-free!) “Grey’s Anatomy.”
With a diamond ring burning a hole in his pocket, Derek tried to figure out exactly when and how he would propose to Meredith. The question of if no longer seemed relevant once Meredith quipped how cute their kids would be. If the girl could bring up babies without breaking a sweat, he figured, surely she wouldn’t bolt if he brought up marriage.

Naturally, word of Derek’s intentions spread quickly throughout the halls of Seattle Grace and, naturally, everybody had advice for the poor guy. Don’t make the question-popping a big, romantic McDreamy thing, Cristina insisted. Absolutely do make the grand gesture, countered a giddy Chief, and the grander the better: Flowers, candles, exotic foods, live musicians and even a rowboat should all be utilized, and skywriting should not be counted out. Even Derek and Meredith’s pregnant patient (Jennifer Westfeldt) -- who'd gotten engaged in a supermarket aisle, right between the cat food and the tampons -- weighed in: The proposal would be perfect, no matter where or how it took place, as long as it was the right person doing the asking. Hard to argue with that logic, I guess, even if it did come from a woman who’d just (accidentally) run her husband over with their car.

Derek’s hushed conversations and general sudden weirdness keyed Meredith in to the fact that something was up. She suspected it was the kid thing. Maybe, she mused to her no-longer-estranged BFF Cristina, he was freaked because he didn’t want kids with her -- with her DNA, her kids could have Alzheimer’s and suicidal tendencies and (surely, worst of all) split ends. So she walked right up and asked him if that was the case. This new grown-up Meredith? Love her. And clearly, so does her would-be fiance, 'cause he said he wants each and every one of her "crappy babies."........there’s more

McDreamy's proposal interrupted by his ex - Feb 5, 2009
Sorry, Meredith — ‘Private Practice’ crossover will have to come first - Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd was all set to propose to Meredith Grey on "Grey's Anatomy," but fate, in the form of his ex-wife, intervened.
Think of the children: Bailey got good news when the Chief said he was recommending her for a position as an attending in general surgery. She was less happy to learn that Dixon wanted her help with another very sick child — one she could barely face after almost having to murder a serial killer to save her last pediatric patient. Bailey ultimately came through, but Dixon brought her down by opining that Bailey is clearly cut out for the position she fears most: a pediatric surgeon.

The fellowship of the ring: Derek told practically everyone except Meredith that he was planning on proposing to her. He told Mark, the Chief, Lexie — he even told a pregnant patient who had to be treated for high blood pressure after accidentally running over her husband with the car. (Bygones!) Pregnant Wife advised him to hurry up and propose to Meredith, then learned that she herself had a dangerous brain aneurysm. But at least before she got any worse, she got to play the essential role of the Seattle Grace patient: to advance the personal life of her doctor.

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Beat Your Heart Out" - Feb 6, 2009
The secrets at Seattle Grace are quickly mounting in this episode of Grey's Anatomy. Izzie secretly puts the interns to work on uncovering her health issues, Lexie's bursting at the seams to let everyone know about her and Mark, and Derek can't quite seem to keep a lid on the engagement chatter.

For starters, it looks like Meredith and Cristina are back to being best buds again. In fact, Cristina is back to reading her version of Harry Potter books: Mer's mom's diary. Among the new facts Cristina has managed to uncover is one juicy tidbit that indicated the Chief was planning on popping the question to Mer's mom. That just might explain why the Chief had so many grand suggestions for Derek on how to propose to Meredith.

Almost blowing Derek's secret is a pregnant patient by the name of Jen (Jennifer Westfeldt, who bares a striking resemblance to Lisa Kudrow), who accidentally ran her husband (Ben Shenkman) over with a truck. As it turns out, Jen's husband isn't the only one in need of medical attention when the mom-to-be suffers a seizure and doctors discover she has a brain aneurysm.

In other patient news, Warren (Peter MacKenzie) and his wife end up at Seattle Grace after a sexual experiment goes awry. I'm still not sure what he had stuck in his tushy tonight, but whatever the doctors removed sure did create a loud clang in the pan. Having said that, I'm now more intrigued than ever to know what suggestion No. 9 was in that magazine article!

One thing I was keeping track of tonight was how long it took for O'Malley to surface. For those of you not watching the clock, it was exactly 30 minutes. It's really a shame they haven't managed to do more for T.R. Knight's character, and I will certainly be sad to see him go if he does end up leaving this season............there’s more

May I ask for some Grey's Anatomy scoop about Cristina/Owen? There isn't much worth watching this season, but those two rock the house. — Sabrina
MATT: There are no truly happy times ahead for these two, but maybe that's a good thing. Because as McArmy's post-traumatic stress disorder manifests itself in increasingly worrisome ways, Cristina will do her best to be there for him.

A Double Dose of Romance! It’s a hookup epidemic as Addison checks back into Seattle Grace (Do we hear wedding bells?)

“I can’t stay out of Seattle” says Walsh with Dane. “It’s always fun, like coming home for the holidays.”

Can Sloan save her ailing love life? Can Derek Save her brother? All will be revealed in this week’s GG/PP crossover.

Patrick Dempsey is goin’ fishing. Not with worms, but for worms. Life-threatening wrigglers are squirming around in the brain of GA’s neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd’s latest patient, Archer Montgomery (Grant Show), and only Derek can save him.. But wait just a minute: Who is this guy with the grotesque medical mystery?

Archer is the elder sibling of Derek’s ex, Addison Montgomery (PP’s Kate Walsh), and his ailment is at the center of a two-part story that will air Febrauary 12 in back-to-back episodes of GA and PP.

In the first hour, Addison travels from Santa Monica, California, the home of her Practice, to enlist Derek’s services. Returning to Seattle Grace, where she once worked, totally stresses her out. In the observation theater above the OR, Addison and her former flame Mark Sloan watch Derek tackle the dangerous procedure while his love, Meredith Grey, assists.

“Apparently, this actually happens,” Pompeo notes after rehearsal. “You can ingest the4se parasitic worms in uncooked food, so now I’m afraid to eat sushi.”

Dempsey, meanwhile, roams the set, making wisecracks and slapping members of the crew on their backs. His twin sons are in “their terrible two” so he’s not getting all the shut-eye he’d like, but he stays upbeat. Settling into position at the operating table, he makes a few suggestive in-and-out moves with a surgical probe, a wicked smile on his face. “And, action!” the director shouts. “It’s a great day for saving lives, people,” Derek announces, with all the seriousness of an acclaimed surgeon.
http://home.comcast.net/~aimsters4/kated.jpg
The crossover may also be a great way of saving PP, a spin-off created by Shonda Rhimes that has not achieved the almost instant success and pop-cultural import of GA. Cast with Broadway and film stars like Audra McDonald and Taye Diggs, as well as such recognizable TV faces as Walsh, Amy Brenneman, Tim Daly and, most recently Show, PP started out strong but was hobbled by the writers’ strike and has fought to build its audience back. Since its move to Thursday nights after GA, ratings have improved; recent episodes have attracted nearly nine million viewers.
Now, this worms-in-the-brain story brings Addison and her neurologist/author brother, who’s anything but a monogamist, back to Seattle. One of his conquests, Addison’s friend Naomi, has come to Seattle to lend support. “And I want that booty call to continue,” McDonald says. Her on-screen ex, Sam, tags along to look after his former wife. “But I get a vibe going with Bailey,” Diggs reveals. “Sam finds her interesting and I think the same can be said for her.”

“We are making a full two-hour extravaganza, so these characters are goin to get to know each other,” say Chandra Wilson, who plays Bailey. “Although Miranda Bailey is a very married woman, and working hard aon the happily part, she’s not dead. She can look, that’s what I’m saying!”
The idea of characters crossing over from one show to another certainly isn’t new (GS, for instance, appeared on the original Beverly Hill 90210 and its spin-off Melrose Place), but this time there’s a twist: All four visitors from PP were med school chums of Derek and Sloan.
“I get the feeling that, just like Meredith takes stray interns into her house, in the past Mark, Derek, Addison, Naomi and Sam were all once under one roof, with only tequila bottles in the kitchen cabinet, “Dane says. But don’t expect old sparks to fly between Addison and Sloan. “I’m with Lexie now,” Dane says, referring to CL’s character. “Even though she broke my penis.” “It was traumatic,” Dane says of the story line that wound up with Seattle Grace’s newest arrival, Iraq War surgeon Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), surgically fixing the problem. “Shepherd just laughted,” Dane adds. “I can’t wait til Sloan tells Shepherd how it happened and who did it. Lexie is quite a woman.”
So much so, it seems that Sloan, the biggest hound ever to roam the halls of Seattle Grace, may finally end up as somebody’s lapdog. “Up until now, he’s not been a one-woman guy, and he is smitten,” Dane observes. “He has recognized something in her that’s completely disarming.”
As far as Addison is concerned, it looks like she and Sloan are in the just-friends zone, he says. “There are a few moments where I check in and have a heart-to-heart with her and then I blurt out the news that Derek is planning on proposing to Meredith.”
Though recent Grey’s episodes have explored Derek’s decision to pop the question to Meredith, that news is bittersweet for Addison. She’s hit a romantic dry spell on PP after her SWAT-team boyfriend walked out. “It’s all been a trail of tears,” Walsh sighs melodramatically. “And now I go to Seattle and keep playing catch-up with people, like in ‘The Big Chill’, and discovering that everybody has love in their lives except Addison. It’s a little melancholy.”

Photo: After a simple surgery goes wrong, Derek “questions his ability and starts going into a dark abyss of insecurity,” says Dempsey, with Walsh, in the halls of SGH

Photo: “I wonder if this is going to give Naomi a complex if she makes men’s heads explode in all the wrong ways,” says McDonald, who serenades Derek with Dane and Diggs.

http://home.comcast.net/~aimsters4/katee.jpg

Walsh – who’s been coping with her own split from her husband of less than two years, Alex – doesn’t seem worried about her character’s romantic prospects. “ Addison is living next door to Sam, who Hottie McHotovitch form Hot Town, and there’s always Pete. That party is going to have to get started at some point.”
In the meantime, however, there is the big crisis case. “There’s the drama of surgery and then all these personal conversations come up,” Walsh says. “A lot of stuff from Addison and Derek’s past is revealed and I get involved in a surgery and try to help Derek, who is having a lot of professional anxiety.”
For a least one actor, this crossover has been pretty smooth sailing. “My whole job consists of me lying in bed,” Show says with a grin. “Mostly my eyes aren’t even open. I fell asleep the other day in the middle of a scene and started snoring,”
The actor’s first appearance on PP was memorable: Addison walked in to find him naked on her kitchen floor with a girl he met on the beach. “He is a self-loathing human being with a whole lot of sexual addiction,” Show says. “ I think I’ve slept with more women on PP in five or six episodes than [I did on] Melrose Place.”
Show is having a field day. “Once I got the role, I started to read up on neurological disorders because I’m a f---- ing dork,” he confesses. He loves playing the bad guy. “You can be nice one minute and a bastard the next. The good guy never get worms in his brain. That’s gross, like pooping you pants. The bad guy can poop his pants all he wants.”
A BEAUTIFUL FLOW CHART IS INCLUDED ON THIS PAGE

http://home.comcast.net/~aimsters4/katef.jpg

Dane puts it more simply: “I don’t think anyone is a fan of Archer. He’s a pr***.” Although the characters may have words, the cast is having fun filming two shows at once. In one scene, Diggs and McDonald, who are accomplished Broadway belters, along with Walsh and Dane, who can also carry a tune, serenade Dr. Shepherd at Joe’s Emerald City Bar. It’s a celebratory moment, as it looks like Derek has saved Archer’s life. Yet, as is often the case on Grey’s, the triumph is followed by tragedy.
Fortunately there is some light at the end of the tunnel: setting a date for the Shepherd/Grey wedding. “The question is how to pop the question,” Dempsey says, “I don’t now the answer to that, but I assume that by the end of the season, I’m going to put a ring on it,” he adds, referencing Beyonce’s recent hit. “Then bang, Season 6, marry her and start having kids already.”
It sounds like a plan – one that could also give birth to another special crossover episode: To repay Derek for saving her brother’s life, maybe Addison will revisit Seattle Grace to deliver Mer and Der’s baby? We’d tune in. Seriously.

The Love Is Just Beginning – Shonda Rhimes reveals the romance ahead for her Grey’s and Practice docs.

The last time I wrote for you, dear TV Guide reader, was last summer. We talked about how Mer and Der finally had their happily ever after, and how we were going to see the realities of the fairy tale. We talked about how Izzie would have a love story unlike anything we’re seen at Seattle Grace; how Cristina would meet a hot, mysterious military guy; and how Mark would play cupid for Callie and find love of his own. The thing I stressed the most is the love. And the love for many of our doctors is just beginning.
The love is also what brings so many of our Oceanside Wellness docs to Seattle. Addison’s brother, Archer, has a medical problem that calls for the best neurosurgeon in the country: Derek. What I love most about these crossover episodes is revealing how connected the two world’s are. Mark Sloan, Addison, Derek, Archer, Naomi and Sam were friends during their med-school days, and in seeing these old friends reunite in a time of crisis, we learn a lot about their pasts. We also get to see what might be my favourite pairing of characters ever – Sam Bennett and Miranda Bailey.
It has been a treat to watch Kate Walsh, Audra McDonald, Taye Diggs and Grant Show working with Chandra Wilson, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane and the rest of the Grey’s cast. And after the crossover, there is a lot of story left to tell this season for both shows.

Private Practice:
Addison is going to have a new romance, and as a result, new personal conflicts. She is steering the practice through financial troubles, tackling medical cases with no easy solutions, but her dating life has been through ups and downs. And it’s going to get juicy. Violet is pregnant – and it’s unclear who the father is. Charlotte and Cooper are heading into uncharted territory when Charlotte has trouble at work and Cooper is too focused on caring for Violet. In relationships, Sam learns that you can’t go home again. As Pete spends more time with Violet, he discovers who and what is worth fighting for. And Naomi shocks us all by questioning her future at the very practice she cofounded.

Grey’s Anatomy:
I know you have a lot of questions. In the weeks to come, we find out what is medically wrong with Izzie, and how Alex, George and her other friends will not only stand by her, but fight for her. Mark loves Lexie, and Lexie loves Mark, and they are as surprised about that as we are. Callie deserves some happiness. But the road for her is never easy, and so both her personal and professional lives are going to take some interesting turns and one big detour I like to call Arizona. Cristina and Owen’s love story is full of pain but also humor and hope. Like me, Cristina has fallen for Owen, hard. But he’s a man back from war, who admits he has big problems leaving his old life in the past. And those problems are going to get bigger for both of them.

Derek and Meredith:
Derek’s always been the strong one, the whole and healed one. Not anymore. He’s questioning his surgical abilities, and it’s the first time we’ve seen that. Meredith’s the strong one now. Before, she might have run, but now she’s sticking. She’s grown. And she’s there for him. And don’t forget the engagement ring his mother gave him. Yes, there will be a wedding – a beautiful, joyous wedding that will surprise you. Remember that I didn’t say whose wedding it will be….

Grey's Anatomy: Beat Your Heart Out - Feb 6th 2009
(S05E14) "Use it wisely." - Owen to Mark about.... well... you know!

Fun fact: The day following the airing of "Stairway to Heaven," the top Google searches where for expressions like "penile fracture" and "broken penis." Thankfully, after getting treatment and not using his tool for a few days, Mark is back in shape! I must admit seeing Owen and Mark quickly enter and exit the exam room to check on it was probably the most hilarious scene of the week. Yes, in my book it was funnier than those scenes with the man who had something (why couldn't they tell us what in the end?!?) lodged in his behind. It wouldn't surprise me if people research that latter case on Google today to find answers as to what was lodged where it didn't belong!

Some of you may say that the funniest scene of the week was when Cristina was ordered to hug Dixon. I must admit I laughed out loud for a second or two while watching Cristina realize that she had no choice but the scene as a whole was not funny. Dixon was in distress and needed to be calmed down. The hugging also seemed to help Bailey a bit. When it was near the end of the hugging fest, Bailey actually looked peaceful rather than tired of hugging as Cristina was. With the emotional roller coaster Bailey was going through this week, she herself definitely needed some hugging to calm her down......... cont’d

TV /It Happened Last Night - The crossover begins...- Feb 5, 2009
Take an imminent proposal, a doctor who's denying he wants to be in the relationship he's in, another doctor who may care too much, someone who's trying but scared to death to figure out what's wrong with her, and some romantic tension that's chaste but hot, add some celibate confusion and a few secrets, and what do you get? Tonight's Grey's Anatomy.
There's a lot of running around and yapping this week, and quite a funny bit involving the men of Seattle Grace and Derek's plans for Meredith, and I'll get to all of that in a minute. For me, this week was Dr. Bailey's turn to star. We learn that after almost losing Jackson, she took three days off -- the only time she's ever taken off besides maternity leave. We learn that as soon as she finishes her residency the Chief wants to promote her to be an attending in general surgery (and about time she got that kind of formal recognition). Bailey's thrilled, and assures him that she'll be fine as long as she doesn't have to deal with any dying kid cases.
Which of course jinxes it for her. Dr. Dixon (Mary McDonnell) is back, and Bailey and Cristina are working with her on the case of 9-year-old Stacy Pollack, who suffers from secondary pulmonary hypertension. As Dixon explains her surgery to the parents, Bailey steps in and explains in English to the kid what will be happening. ............ cont’d
