Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.11 "Wish You Were Here" Recap - January 08, 2009
We all get at least one good wish a year, as Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) voiceovers at the beginning of tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy. Cristina (Sandra Oh) stands over the whoosh! vent in the hospital basement where she kissed Major McHottie last, as we cut to Meredith and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) waking up with an early morning quickie before work. Except that the sun is already brightly streaming in through the windows. If the Grey's Anatomy producers knew anything about Seattle, they would know that in January, sunlight is hard to come by. I would say that it looks to be about 10 in the morning. Slackers.

Meredith and Cristina are still in a fight, so things get tense when they are both assigned to the pit for a trauma patient with Derek and Major McHottie (Kevin McKidd). The patient is a PDR (patient, death-row) with major stab wounds. Richard (James Pickens Jr.) warns them to keep quiet about the case to everyone else, but we all know that you have to have loose lips in order to work at Seattle Grace, so there's no chance of that happening. It's also Izzie's birthday today, but we'll get to that later........................cont’d

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - Wish You Were Here - 2009-01-09
Welcome to 2009 and back to Grey's Anatomy! Tonight, Meredith and Cristina continue their feud and get a glimpse of creepy, redheaded evil! Izzie tries to come clean to Alex, but instead gets dirty with him! Sloane and Callie try to resist the forbidden fruit of interns! Annnd... Alex is totally becoming a pediatric surgeon!

Meredith and Cristina are still fighting, but Bailey doesn't care and assigns them both to help Derek and McBadAss on a special assignment from the Chief. When they get to the trauma center, they find out that their special project is a death-row inmate that was beaten and stabbed. Enter the uber-creepy Eric Stoltz.

The doctors don't really know much about Stoltz, other than he's a death-row inmate, but that's enough for Cristina and Derek to be immediately hostile and Derek to refuse morphine even after discovering a toothbrush-shiv in the patient's spine. Meredith, thinking she knows better than anyone, gives the prisoner morphine anyway. When Cristina finally gets the inmate to tell her and Meredith what he did, he turns the creepy - which was at about eight - up to eleven while he describes giving in to his urge to slit a woman's throat and liking it so much that he killed two women the next day and two more the day after that. .............. there’s more

Interview: Eric Stoltz On Grey's Anatomy And The TV Landscape - 2009-01-07
Eric Stoltz is finally stepping from behind the camera on Grey’s Anatomy to play a death row inmate that is admitted to Seattle Grace. I had a chance to speak with Eric briefly about his role on Grey’s, which airs Thursday, January 8 at 9pm ET on ABC. Time constraints on my end may have kept the conversation short, but Eric was gracious even though a cold was causing hearing problems.

Stoltz will appear in Grey’s as William, an inmate who will be causing a rift between characters and causing even more drama on the overtly dramatic show. It appears that the treatment of William calls into question whether a murderer deserves to be saved. When asked whether this storyline was going to be yet another dramatic moment on the show Stoltz quipped, ”I hope so. Otherwise we’re making a comedy.” I think Grey’s could use some levity, even if it comes from a death row inmate. ................more

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Fighting Temptation - Jan 9, 2009
While Bailey struggles with a new doctor, the rift between Cristina and Meredith grows wider, and Izzie is torn between alive Alex and dead Denny
It's been more than a month since we had a new Grey's Anatomy, (almost) long enough to forget the bad taste it'd left in my mouth last fall, what with all the resurrected-Denny, new-doctor-paloooza, interns-operating-on-each-other nonsense. I gorged on holiday meals, I drank (lots of) New Year's champagne, and I came back resolved to give Grey's another chance. I wanted it to be good. I wanted it to be great, like second- and third-season great. But I'd settle for good.

I watched Mer and Der canoodling in their cocoon of blankets at the beginning, and I felt warm and cozy. Good. I saw the paramedics bring in Eric Stoltz as a death row prisoner who'd been stabbed. Cool — we could use a kickass medical case............cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': Something for the Pain - Jan 9 2009
Maybe “Grey’s Anatomy” should take a five-week break more often. The beleaguered medical drama returned last night with an episode that, thankfully, wasn’t as painful as a filed-down toothbrush to the spine.

That uncomfortable experience was reserved for the death row inmate, played by occasional “Grey’s” director Eric Stoltz, who was rushed to Seattle Grace after what seemed to be one heckuva prison fight. Considering some of the series’ recent soapy turns, I admit I worried that the serial killer, who’s only a week away from execution, would decide he had nothing to lose, wriggle out of his cuffs and set off on some mad hospital rampage. But so far, the storyline, which continues in the next two episodes, seems more interested in addressing a sticky moral and ethical dilemma: How much good should be done to help such a bad guy? Cool. That works. Especially because it further complicates one of “Grey’s” richest, most fully realized relationships — that between BFF’s Meredith and Cristina — in a believable, interesting way.

Tension’s been building between these two for some time, what with Cristina not being able to fully get behind Mer’s reunion with Der, and Meredith failing to stand up for her friend to the Chief after the whole Fight-Club interns debacle. Now, they find themselves on opposite sides of the ethics debate, acting all “silent ragey.” They’re both clearly hurting without the other, and it kinda hurts to watch — precisely because sometimes really hard, messy stuff happens and there just aren’t any quick fixes, even with your "person.".......more

On ‘Grey's Anatomy,’ not all wishes come true - Jan. 8, 2009
But the Chief finally realized that Seattle Grace is one nutty place
You mean this isn't how a normal hospital operates?: The Chief finally realized that the reason his hospital fell to #12 in national rankings is because it's one big petri dish of crazy. Strangely, it took the death of a fellow doctor to make him realize that a constantly revolving door of docs and interns who operate on each other is pretty weird. When doctors who were approached to replace the deceased doc refused to interview at Seattle Grace, the Chief sank into a funk that lasted almost the entire show. He snapped out of it at the end, but it's really not clear why. It's not like the hospital got any saner while he moped..................cont’d

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Wish You Were Here" - Jan 9, 2009
On this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, a death row inmate checks in and further fuels the rift between Meredith and Cristina, Callie and Mark join a special support group, and Izzie finally tells Alex about her not so innocent encounters with Denny.

When William (Eric Stoltz) arrived at Seattle Grace, it quickly became apparent who among the staff wasn't happy to have a death row inmate in their hospital. While Meredith took a more empathetic approach to the patient by offering him more morphine to ease his pain when others wouldn't, Cristina and Derek were more steadfast about doing things by the book.

I have to admit, even I felt a bit sorry for William as he lay there on the gurney with a foreign object piercing his spine. Though I never expected to hear that his crime was slitting women's throats for fun. Needless to say, my sympathy for his pain quickly dissipated. However, William's presence this week also uncovered a new story from Derek's past that helped explain his immediate dislike for the prisoner. As it turns out, two guys once shot Derek's father to death because he wouldn't give them his watch, which had been a gift from Derek's mom. After sharing this news with Meredith, Derek poignantly said, "We are supposed to treat everyone the same, but we're not all the same."........more

Grey's Anatomy Preview: Eric Stoltz Discusses His Killer Role - Jan 8, 2009
When Grey's Anatomy resumes its season this Thursday at 9 pm/ET, Seattle Grace's finest will get a collective case of the heebie-jeebies when a death row inmate is admitted with critical injuries. Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction), who occasionally directs for ABC's hit medical drama, steps in front of the camera for the next three episodes to play the enigmatic serial killer. Stoltz gave us a look at the doctor-dividing dilemmas to come.

TVGuide.com: There's a bit of a disconnect between "Eric Stoltz" and "serial killer." One, are you glad there's that disconnect? And two, do you think it helps you bring something different to the role?
Eric Stoltz: [Laughs] Yes, I am happy that I really don't have much in common with killers. Absolutely. But, that being said, it's always bracing to explore what I might actually have in common with them underneath at all. Throughout the course of the day, I do have impulses to lash out at someone or to ram the car that took my parking space or yell at the cab that splashed water on me. But because I'm living in society and want to be a good person, I don't let those impulses out.

TVGuide.com: Is your character, William, remorseful at all?
Stoltz: You think he might have some remorse, but he could also be playing at having remorse, in order to get what he wants. Sociopaths tend to be pretty good actors. Nobody had any idea what Ted Bundy was up to for a long time.

TVGuide.com: To be clear, this story arc isn't about whether William could get loose and go on a rampage in the hospital, but to what lengths the doctors should go to save his life, right?
Stoltz: Either of those [stories] could come to be. You never know, it's [Grey's creator] Shonda Rhimes!

TVGuide.com: Does William's case present divisive moral and ethical dilemmas for the doctors?
Stoltz: Absolutely. When someone on death row is brought to a hospital, doctors are confronted with their own ethical code. "Is it right to save the life of someone who has done so much bad in the world?" "What is a doctor's job and how should one respond to this situation?" It presents a lot of interesting, rich things for all these talented actors to play with.

TVGuide.com: Particularly toward the end of your arc, you have a lot of scenes with Ellen Pompeo. Does William create any sort of drama for Meredith and/or her relationship with Derek?
Stoltz: Yes, I certainly insinuate myself into their relationship and am the source of not a little strife.

TVGuide.com: Is he a charmer despite his "shortcomings"?
Stoltz: I would like to think so!

TVGuide.com: Of course you would. What was it like becoming a part of the very Grey's cast you raved about the last time we spoke?
Stoltz: It was a joy. They didn't hesitate to knock me down a few pegs and remind me that I am no longer directing them.

TVGuide.com: Will there be any sort of body count during your three-episode run?
Stoltz: Uh, possibly!

TVGuide.com: OK, give us one last super-vague tease that won't make Shonda angry.
Stoltz: [Laughs] I've probably already said too much.

Grey's Anatomy: Wish You Were Here - Jan 9th 2009
(S05E11) "Sexed-up stalkers." - Sloan

I thought Grey's Anatomy had gone far enough with the Izzie/Denny mess - until this episode. Why you ask? Because they introduced a doctor who gets around on Heelys!! Do you have any idea how much I hate Heelys? Nine-year-olds come whipping by on those damn things when you're walking around the mall, and as much as you hate to wish bad things upon a 9-year-old, I'm just waiting for the headline "Local Sixth Grader Wearing Heelys Cracks Skull Open in Front of Orange Julius." Oh and that doctor (Dr. Arizona Robbins) that got introduced tonight? She's a pediatric surgeon. Great message to send to the youth of America.
At this point, I've decided to take Webber's approach and not get attached to any new doctors that come through the front doors of Seattle Grace Hospital. No one stays - they all quit! That being said, Dr. Robbins seems like she has a pretty good attitude about things, and I loved how she didn't take any crap from Bailey......there’s more

'Grey's Anatomy': Death Row Medicine- January 08, 09
As good as Grey's Anatomy is when it focuses on the cooperation between the doctors of Seattle Grace, it's often even better when it focuses on the conflict between them. And heavens, there's plenty to go around this week.

For starters, the cold war between Meredith and Cristina is continuing unabated. They're not speaking, and when they do it's tense and even nasty. And of course, they end up working on the same case together, along with Hunt and Derek. A death row inmate, played by Eric Stoltz (who's already directed a couple of episodes this season and shows up again next week), has been beaten and stabbed -- and the shiv is stuck in his spine. The chief wants the guy treated quickly and quietly, and the most interesting part is how it seems to draw battle lines among the four doctors on the case: Derek and Cristina have zero interest in managing his pain or doing anything above the basics, and Meredith and Hunt are more focused on treating the patient rather than just dealing with the case. But despite the amount of pain the guy appears to be in, no more morphine, says Derek................more
