Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.7 "Rise Up" Recap - November 06, 2008
Tonight's Grey's Anatomy opens with Meredith's voiceover musing about death, a common occurrence on Grey's Anatomy, actually. It's early morning and Cristina (Sandra Oh) wakes Meredith up by calling to discuss Ellis' old diaries, which are the Harry Potter books Cristina never had. Derek (Patrick Dempsey), who enjoys not getting woken up by a phone call at the butt crack of dawn, is annoyed to no end by Cristina. Later on at the hospital, Derek asks Mark (Eric Dane) to seduce Cristina to keep her occupied.
Everyone is late for work today, even Bailey who is arguing with Tucker about marriage counseling.
Don't Miss
In skills lab, Richard introduces the residents to STAN, a state of the art animatronic robot for the residents to practice on. Operating on STAN will help Richard decide on which of the second-year residents will get to do their first solo surgery. Of course, the news of solo surgeries whips all the residents into a competitive frenzy to see who will get the first one. Just another day at Seattle Grace. Richard (James Pickens Jr.) asks Major McHottie (Kevin McKidd) to observe the residents to help him decide....................there’s more

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy- Rise Up - 2008-11-07
All of the press and hype around tonight's episode has been about either Izzy having to face the consequences of her decision to sneak Denny up on the heart transplant list (the season before last) and the very abrupt departure of Brooke Smith (Erica Hahn) from the show. Not too surprisingly, the two stories were intertwined in tonight's episode.

I'd forgotten that it was Hahn's patient that was supposed to get the heart that ended up going to Denny in season two. Tonight, we meet the patient and he hasn't been doing so well. Erica is determined to help him now after having to let him and his wife down so many times before, most recently with the loss of the heart that Izzie stole. I didn't really completely understand the procedure, but it seems to basically consist of inserting alcohol into the man's ventricles in order to burn off muscle impairing his ability to breathe. Yeah, it didn't make sense to me, either..........cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': You've Got To Have Heart - Nov 7, 2008
Seattle Grace's newest top docs shine a light on its biggest problem, and one of them decides she really won't put up with it
Welcome to the Erica Hahn Memorial Grey's Anatomy Recap. Yes, this was apparently the last episode for our favorite prickly lesbian cardio surgeon...they sure do know how to scare off the cardio geniuses around Seattle Grace, don't they? Ah, well, we'll be getting a brand new one (Mary McDonnell) straight from Battlestar Galactica in the coming weeks, not to mention a brand new bisexual, played by Melissa George. Nonetheless, I count Brooke Smith as an unnecessary loss — regardless of whether producers were simply over her story or the network was uncomfortable with all the graphic lesbianic talk. Sure, Hahn could be harsh, but I liked that she kept the spazzy Seattle Gracers in line — no better indicated than in this episode...........cont’d

‘Grey’s’ says goodbye to Dr. Hahn’ - Nov 6, 2008
Her abrupt departure isn't the week's weirdest development, either
Welcome the TauntBot 3000: With a competition underway to decide who would get to perform a solo surgery, everyone wanted practice, and no one could figure out how to get it. The Chief offered up a robot that they could operate on, but that wound up being a cruel prank that ended with the Chief speaking through the robot, telling George, “I can’t believe you even passed your intern test.”

Looking for a few warm bodies: The interns needed practice, too, and Lexie thought practicing IV placement on each other was “creepy-basement crazy.” So she sought something less creepy-basement crazy, which turned out to be, naturally, charming ill-gotten corpses out of the guy at the morgue. Unfortunately for Lexie, the bossy residents wanted practice, too, and they eventually took over, making it into a dissection free-for-all. The fun stopped when Bailey walked in and, appalled, ordered them to stop mistreating dead bodies. ...........cont’d

Grey's Anatomy new intern, Sadie Harris may remind you of somebody else. No not Izzie Stevens although talk is heating up that disgruntled Katherine Heigl will be allowed to exit the series at seasons end. Melissa, who signed a multi-year deal with the ABC drama, describes her character as "naughty and "mischievious" and says she has a lot in common with Angelina Jolie. As for Heigl's possible exit, "I don't know who's moving on," says Melissa, who debuts November 13, "but sometimes five years on a show may be enough for some people. Shonda Rhimes is so clever. She knows exactly what she's doing. It's smart to bring in new life"

Additional TV Guide blurb on Lexie:
Lexie Grey is the unlikely ringleader of a secret society of Grey's Anatomy interns who operate on each other for experience. "This is like an intern's fight club." Chyler Leigh tells me. The arrival of Melissa's reckless Sadie ups the risk factor in Lexie's underground procedures until there are "some serious ramifications for the hospital," teases Betsy Beers. Later in the season, Lexie feels the love when Meredith softens her attitude toward her little sis, Derek takes a paternal stance and boozy patriarch Thatcher likely returns.

Exclusive: Multi-Episode Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice Crossover Is in the Works - Nov 6, 2008
Talk about a delicate operation.
Sources tell TVGuide.com exclusively that ABC powerhouse Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off, Private Practice, will be embarking on a multi-episode crossover story come February sweeps.
Though at this very early stage the number of episodes and the sum total of actors involved has yet to be nailed down, it can at least be confirmed that Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison Montgomery will again be walking the halls of Seattle Grace, as she did for one episode last spring (several months after Private Practice made its debut).
Grey's Anatomy is currently in its fifth season on ABC. The concept for Private Practice first emerged in the form of a back-door pilot/May 2007 episode of Grey's in which Addison ventured to Los Angeles to catch up with gal pal Naomi (originally played by Alias' Merrin Dungey, but quickly recast with Audra McDonald).
Who from Seattle Grace might show their pretty face at Oceanside Wellness? When I interviewed Walsh just a few weeks ago, she cast her vote for Eric Dane's Mark Sloan, saying, "It'd be fun to have him cause some trouble!" That said, the actual laundry list of crossing over cast members from each show, outside of Walsh, has yet to be confirmed.

Grey's Actress "Really, Really Shocked" by Ouster from Show - Nov 3, 2008
It is the worst and last news that "Callica" fans expected to hear. But the fact is that Brooke Smith, who first appeared as Grey's Anatomy's Dr. Erica Hahn in May 2006, has been abruptly let go from the show - just as her lesbian storyline with Sara Ramirez's Callie was taking off. Ironically, series creator Shonda Rhimes broke the news to Smith in mid-September, just after the actress had filmed Erica's pivotal "I see leaves!" coming-out monologue. Her last episode airs this Thursday.

"I was very excited when they told me that Erica and Callie were going to have this relationship. And I really hoped we were going to show what happens when two women fall in love and that they were going to treat it like any heterosexual couple on TV," Smith tells EW's Ausiello, who first reported on her release. "So I was surprised and disappointed when they just suddenly told me that they couldn't write for my character anymore.

"I was really, really shocked," she stresses. "It was the last thing I expected."

In a statement, Rhimes says, "Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show — Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie."

The Grey's boss goes on to say, "I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season."

Though ABC declines to comment on the reason for the unexpected ouster, Smith says that in her talk with Rhimes, she got the feeling it was dictated by the network. "I don't know for sure, but it definitely seemed like [Shonda's] hands were tied," she says, "like some decision came down from above."

Might have this frank exploration of two women coming to terms with new sexual orientations proven too hot for ABC to handle? Smith saw no such signs. "At work I had no sense of it. And more fans seemed to like it than not," she tells EW. "I don't think I'm ever going to know [why this happened]."

The answer may be obvious, if one looks at a pattern of recent story "twists" across ABC. Ugly Betty last season introduced with much fanfare Rebecca Romijn as a post-op transgender; now she's gone. Right out of the gate, Dirty Sexy Money lathered things up by pairing aspiring politician Patrick with a great transgender love; last week, she walked out of his life. So Grey's writing out a full-fledged lesbian such as Erica — versus the simply lez-curious Callie — would seem to fit this pattern. Meanwhile, gay males such as Brothers & Sisters' Kevin appear to go unpestered... at least for now.

Grey's Anatomy: Rise Up - Nov 7th
(S05E07) "It's like a bouquet... of corpses!" - Izzie

You know, for a guy that died, Denny Duquette somehow manages to get more screen-time on Grey's Anatomy than most of the characters who are still living. Seriously, it must be incredibly frustrating to be a minor character on this show and know that two or three times a season, some dead guy who most fans are sick of will get more time in front of the camera than you will.
You know what though? I liked this Denny episode. I liked it a lot. I'm even going to go out on a limb and say that this was the best episode of the season thus far. While I typically moan when I seen Jeffrey Dean Morgan's name pop up in the opening credits, I got over it pretty fast once I realized why he was there this time around - so Izzie can finally get over him. Is she? Hell no - but this was a good start.............cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': Show some respect - Nov 6, 2008
We've always known that the interns and residents at Seattle Grace are immature and self-involved, in addition to being talented, but this week's Grey's Anatomy really drove that point home. And it also showed very clearly what kind of toll that an odd turn of writing can have on a character.
First, let me say a word about Brooke Smith, who it was announced this week is leaving the show. I think she's a wonderful actor, and I'm glad that she gets so much work so we can all see her more often. Regardless of the reasons for her departure, she created a memorable character who, while consistently tough, demanding, talented, and often overly critical, had a vulnerable side as well, and even though I didn't totally buy Callica as a couple, the way she let those vulnerabilities come through kept me interested in watching her from week to week. I'll be interested to see how that storyline gets wrapped up......................cont’d

Preview of 'Grey's Anatomy' 5.08: These Ties That Bind - Nov 07, 2008
eattle Grace Hospital will deal with a new personality in the November 13 episode of "Grey's Anatomy". One of Meredith's oldest friends, Sadie, enrolls a job as an intern at the hospital but Mer's friends are less than welcoming to her.
Lexie leads her fellow interns in secretive, unorthodox surgical training sessions, and a new surgeon, Virginia Dixon, brings rules and order to the OR. Dr. Hunt, meanwhile, continues to pester on the other doctors with his trauma room method, and causes further rift, especially with Sloan.............cont’d

'Grey's' Lesbian Doc Fails the 'Chemistry' Test - Nov 7, 2008
Dr. Erica Hahn was cast out of the horny halls of Seattle Grace Hospital on "Grey's Anatomy" last night, a mere two weeks after consummating her relationship with Callie, a.k.a. Sara Ramirez.
Though actress Brooke Smith, who plays Hahn, had been told back in September that her services no longer would be needed, she waited until three days before her exit from the show to fling herself in an ecstasy of grief at Entertainment Weekly.
Though Smith said she did not know why she was let go, Entertainment Weekly did its best to convey that she was expunged because ABC or its parent, Disney, got cold feet over the whole McLesbian thing -- because the EW wag himself had told Smith this was going to happen back in July, when he ran into her at a trophy-show red carpet.
Lesbian hookups are a time-honored broadcast sweeps tradition -- this being the November version of the quarterly ratings derby. Actresses who have been tagged made-for-broadcast lesbian on their shows tend to have a very short life expectancy -- about that of plant lice. By that measure, Erica is a true survivor. She and Callie exchanged their first kisses last season -- during the May sweeps. ...... there’s more
