SIDES & SUMMARIES

Intern #3 - Scene 1

INT. LOCKER ROOM

Intern #3 speaks to some fellow interns.

Intern #3: Okay, yeah, we’re new. We just got here. We don’t know the scrub room from the bathroom yet. And we all transferred in from other hospitals, hospitals we thought we’d be at through our entire residency, hospitals where we knew where the freaking scrub rooms were – but life happens. Plans change. And now we’re her at Seattle Grace, and the residents all treat us like we’re opossums. Little know fact – dumbest animal in North America. But it doesn’t mean we’re destined to be the dud interns of this hospital. We’ve been killing ourselves in the skill lab peeling grapes and sewing bananas – we know what we’re doing, people. We got this. And we may be less experience than they are, but we can save lives too. I know we can.

Intern # 2 - Scene 1

INT. HOSPITAL

Intern #2 approaches Dr. Sterling.

Intern # 2: You paged me, Dr. Sterling?

Dr. Sterling: Did you put a central line in Mrs. Spitzer? Without my permission – without any supervision?

Intern # 2: Guilty as charged. Look, she needed a central line so I put one in. I’ve watched it a thousand time, I’ve practiced on dummys, if I’m really here to learn from you, sometimes you gotta let me sit in the driver’s seat. Take a chance on me, Dr. Sterling. I’m confident, maybe even cocky – but I’m not stupid. I know what I can rock and I know what I suck at. And I can rock a central line. I put it in correctly didn’t I? (then, sexually) I’ve been watching you work.. You and the other residents. You have skills. You’re not afraid to use them.. So why should I be?

Intern # 1 - Scene 1

INT. PATIENT’S ROOM

Awkward, nervous Intern #1 attempts to put IV line in patient.

Patient: Ow.

Intern # 1: Oh, I’m sorry, sir .. I’m a little new at this. I mean, not new new — I did go to medical school – University of Chicago, first in my class. Not that you asked ... anyway. Back to the task at hand. Okay, little pinch ...

Patient: Ow!

Intern # 1: I’m sorry, I’m sorry ... sometimes it’s little difficult finding the vein on the first try and .... don’t worry, I’ve had lots of practice ... you’re in good hands, sir.

(Beat)

Patient: OW.

Intern # 1: Oh wow. Really, I apologize, sir. I am just so, so ... you’d think they’d has us practice on shrimp, right? Shrimps are super veiny! I’m gonna go get my resident to put this IV in for you.

(Beat)

Yeah, she’s a real doctor.

And a distressed Ms. Chen leaves...

INT. HOSPITAL – BRUCE’S ROOM – DAY

Dr Garner does pre-op on Bruce Walling, 50's a wealthy businessman. His son, PJ, 23, crunchy hipster Seattle boy, sullen, gives blood.

P.J.: OW. (then sullen) Do I really have to give this much? Do old people need mor blood or something?

Dr. Gardner: Your father? He just turned 50.

Bruce: My son’s twenty-two. To him, everyone over forty’s on the brink of death.

P.J.: I turned twenty-three in August.

Bruce: Oh. That’s right. (to Dr. Gardner) It’s .... been a while since we’ve seen each other. (to PJ) Hey, maybe we could have a little belated party her in the hospital. We’ll get ice cream cake, you used to love those....

P.J.: When I was seven. I’m not her for a reunion. I just want to get this over with and get out of here, okay?

Beat. Awkward tension. Dr. Gardner looks down at Bruce’s chart.

Dr. Gardner: You’re no longer on the medical pills?

Bruce: I was for the last fifteen years. One day it just stopped working. My red blood cell levels started plummeting and nothing was gonna change that. Figured my time was up. ( smiles at PJ) I’m pretty lucky to have a son who would help me out with transfusion for the surgery.

P.J.: You’re lucky you’re loaded. When do I get that car? Before or after your surgery?

It hangs there a moment. Then Bruce turns to Dr. Gardner.

Bruce: Christmas gift.

Off Dr. Gardner in the midst of awkwardness.

P.J. - Scene 2
INT. HOSPITAL – BRUCE’S ROOM – DAY

Dr Garner just updated Bruce Walling and PJ. PJ’s pissed.

P.J.: I can’t believe this. I got my shifts covered at the bar, I flaked on my friends .... I was supposed to be climbing Mt. Shasta this weekend. But no, I came here.

Dr. Gardner: Your father’s surgery is on hold until we find another surgeon.

P.J.: I’ve been poked and prodded like a lab rat for half of my blood. All for nothing!?

Bruce: We got to spend time with each other. That’s not nothing.

P.J.: Now you wanna spend time together? You’re about twenty years too late. So yeah. Nothing.

Bruce: P.J....

P.J.: Do I still get a car? If not, I’m not waiting around. I’m out of here. I have a life to get back to.

Dr. Gardner: Please. I need you. If you could just be patient for a little while longer......

And it’s so horrible, the way Bruce has to beg his own son.......

Marilyn - Scene 1

INT. HOSPITAL – STAN’S ROOM – DAY

Dr. Smith, accompanied by her interns, enters Stan’s room. Stan’s wife Marilyn, Marilyn Mercer, 40's, well-kept and proper stands next to Stan’s bed.

Marilyn: I don’t understand. Why does he have to go through all this if he’s getting surgery in a few hours?

Dr. Smith: Stan’s labs indicated bad medical. Doing these tests pre-operatively increases the surgery’s success rate.

Dr. Smith hooks Stan up to another machine with a huge thick needle. Marilyn visibly winces.

Marilyn: How about something to relax you? I could get your book? Some music?

Stan: I’m fine.

Marilyn: What about some juice? We need to keep your fluid intake up.

Stan: (to the doctors, joking) No one love to track my urine output as much as this little lady.

Marilyn: I like to take care of you. It’s not a crime.

Stan: You should see her with my meds. She puts them in these little boxes make with eh days of the week.

Marilyn: (smiling) Well, if I left it to you, you would get them all mixed up.

Off Dr. Smith watching Marilyn brush some hair out of Stan’s face ....

Marilyn - Scene 2

INT. HOSPITAL – STAN’S ROOM – DAY

Dr. Smith checks a recovering Stan’s medical as an upset bitter Marilyn is pacing.

Dr. Smith: Medical’s normal, medical’s coming down.

Marilyn: Three years. THREE YEARS I’ve taken care of you. While you’ve been sleeping with some pre-pubescent office temp!

Stan: Honey, I am so, so sorry ...

Marilyn: Please. I’m not an idiot. I know there have been other women ... all these years I told myself it was just sex, it was just ... my God, Stan ..... I just never thought you were invested in an actual relationship.

Marilyn sinks into a chair, devastated. Dr. Smith seizes the pause to quietly update Stan.

Dr. Smith: Sir, you have a slight hear medical. It’s nothing to panic about, but I’m going to have to run a repeat heart test medical to clear you for surgery.

But Stan and Marilyn are barely listening to Dr. Smith.

Marilyn: I do everything for you. I’ve given up my entire life to get your medicals, drive you to doctors ----

Stan: I never asked you to any of that! I can drive a car, pour my own juice – I got SICK, not ELDERLY. It’s like you don’t see me anymore, you just see a decrepit old man.

Marilyn: Well, don’t worry, it stops now. I won’t do one more thing for you. And that includes me being here right now.

Marilyn rushes out, upset.

Marilyn - Scene 3

INT. HOSPITAL – WAITING AREA – DAY

Dr. Smith approaches Marilyn sitting down in chairs. Marilyn looks up at her.

Dr. Smith: Mrs. Mercer, I thought you had left?

Marilyn: You must think I’m a terrible person. Abandoning my husband when he’s having a really serious heart surgery that involves lots of risks.

Dr. Smith: We’re not thinking anything, ma’am

Marilyn: I’ve known for years that Stan ..... well, the word faithful isn’t exactly in the man’s vocabulary. A marriage of twenty years ... it happens. You get through it. You tell yourself it doesn’t matter . That you’re the one he comes home to, the one who takes car of him. But there’s still something in being his wife, that you’re still the one he has the relationship with... that you’re still the one who matters the most in the end ... But he’s taken that away from me, now. He’s taken everything. My love, my pride, my dignity .... it’s all gone....

Stan: All of them look the same to me. Why can’t they just put everything I need into one pill? I could handle that.

Marilyn: I’d still need to remind you.

Stan: Sad but true.

Off Dr. Smith watching Marilyn smile and brush some hair out of Stan’s face ....

Bruce: I can’t believe it. I got so close

Dr. Gardner: Look, your medical should be fine until another surgeon is available.

Bruce: It’s not the surgery that I’m upset about

Dr. Gardner: It’s your son.

Bruce: We hadn’t spoken in over a year. It took me months to find him .... he’s been living on a friend’s couch. Didn’t even have a phone number. This was my chance to get him back.

Dr. Gardner: I see.

Bruce: I know PJ can be a real ass. He’s selfish, he’s rude ... but it hasn’t been easy for him. His mom died, I wasn’t around .... I made a lot of mistakes. Maybe it’s just too late for us.

Bruce tries to smile, but he’s barely holding it together.

Dr. Gardner: You can’t blame yourself. Some people, they’re just broken. For whatever reason. They shut down, and that’s it.

Bruce: So you just give up on people you car about?

Dr. Gardner: If you don’t expect too much, you can’t be disappointed.

Bruce starts to cry. And is so, so embarrassed by it.

Bruce: I’m sorry, I don’t know why I’m .... I’m sorry ..... I’m so sorry.....

And he’s say it to his doctors, but also to his son. Dr. Gardner lets him cry....

Lindsay - Scene 1
INT. HOSPITAL – LINDSAY’S ROOM – DAY

Dr. Vernon presents Lindsay Herman, 20's, cute, nervous.

Dr. Vernon: Lindsay Herman, 25. She will be donating bone marrow today. Lindsay, it say her you don’t know your recipient?

Lindsay: No.

Dr. Vernon: That’s great. You often don’t find people who will do something that amazing for complete strangers.

Lindsay: (a little on edge) It’s really not a big deal. I have enough bone marrow to go around so ....

Dr. Vernon: Of course it is! Do you know if everyone in the world did this .....

Dr. Vernon’s gushing is making Lindsay uncomfortable.

Lindsay: I just want to give the bone marrow already and be done with it. I’m so sick of the “yay, you.”

Dr. Vernon: Completely understand. Let’s get you a medical.

Lindsay gives Dr. Vernon a grateful nod......

Dr. Vernon’s checking Lindsay’s chart.

Lindsay: Is everything okay ..... with Stan?

Dr. Vernon: They found a slight medical. They’re going to run a medical to be safe.

Beat.

Lindsay: I’ve never stolen anything. In my life. Not even a lipstick. And now I’m stealing someone’s husband. It’s just ... you move to a city, you don’t know anyone .... it started as and office thing. Light. Fun. My friends were all jealous. Then one day you wake up and this.... this older guy, he’s all you can think about, you’d do anything for him .... even make up excuses in order to be in the hospital the day he’s having surgery ......

Dr. Vernon: Why?

Lindsay: I can take care of him... She may be married to him, but I can take care of him, too.

Dr. Vernon: you would think your BP would be up after all the stress.

Lindsay: I guess I’m relieved. Now he’s finally gonna have to make a choice. Her or me.

Off Lindsay as she tries to gather herself ....

Dr. Vernon’s checks on Lindsay’s, preparing her discharge papers. Lindsay’s furious.

Dr. Vernon: Your medical’s good. You should be able to leave after we fill out your discharge papers.

Lindsay: Stan better be dead right now.

Dr. Vernon: I heard he’s doing fine.

Lindsay: He hasn’t called me. He hasn’t looked for me. He still hasn’t made a choice. It’s been three years! Three years I’ve wasted on a pathetic indecisive .... I kept waiting and waiting for him ..... WEAK, that’s what he is. Weak and sad and OLD. I GAVE UP THREE YEARS OF MY LIFE FOR HIM AND HE STILL HASN’T MADE A CHOICE.

Dr. Vernon: He hasn’t looked for you. Or called .... I think he’s made a choice.

Lindsay stares at her. She knows Dr. Vernon’s right. She’s pretty much known for three years what this was. And as it sinks in, the tough facade melts and she starts to sob.

Not much for 5,05, just a few sides so far...

Thanks to OA, merdertruelove and taylijane at ABC and Windsprints from over at TWOP

We have a heart patient Stan with his wife Marilyn and his mistress Lindsay elsewhere in the hospital to be near Stan. A patient Bruce and his estranged son PJ - hopefully this will end up being Alex with Bruce and we will get more depth about Alex's past. People waiting impatiently for results, guessing clinic patients. No cases appear to be for Mark (what else is new) or Derek. Derek could be home with snoring scenes by the time 505 rolls around I guess.

Except for the one that could relate to Alex, pretty dull overall.

Plus sides for new interns:

Intern 1: Nervous, trying to put an IV in a patient. Tells the patient he/she is new at this, went to med school in Chicago. Has trouble finding a vein. Tells the patient he's in good hands, sometimes hard to find a vein on the first try. Tells the patient they have practiced on oranges. Still can't get the IV in, apologizes to the patient and says he/she will get a resident and that the resident is a real doctor.

Intern 2: Is paged by Dr. Sterling. Dr. Sterling asks if he/she put a central line in Mrs. Spitzer without permission or supervision. Intern 2 tells Dr. Sterling that he/she did, has watched it a thousand times and practiced on dummies. Tells Dr. Sterling that he/she is at SGH to learn from him/her but sometimes has to be in the driver's seat. Says he/she is confident, even cocky but not stupid. Knows what he/she can rock and what they suck at. Then sexily says to Dr. Sterling that he/she has skills and isn't afraid to use them so why should he/she?

Intern 3: To other interns: We're new, we just got here and we all transferred from other hospitals hospitals they thought they would complete their residencies at. Life happens, plans change and they are at SGH now where the residents are treating them like they are opossums. Opossums are the dumbest animals in North America. Doesn't mean they are duds. They've been practicing in skills labs and know what they are doing. They may not have as much experience but they can save lives.
