Grey's Anatomy: Kidneys, Methods, and Pants - October 24, 2008
Last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy featured a pretty impressive surgery, which involved just about every doctor at Seattle Grace. Planned out by Bailey, 6 people needed a kidney transplant and they would all be performed at the same time, involving 12 patients total. What Bailey failed to check before admitting these patients is their dysfunctional family backgrounds. One man was so desperate to reconnect with his estranged son that he offered him $10,000 to donate his kidney to him and spend a few days with him in the hospital. Another man was cheating on his wife with another donor and when she found out, she nearly walked. Despite those massive issues, not to mention Meredith dropping a kidney on the floor, everyone survived and Seattle Grace started climbing back to the top of the national hospital rankings...................there's more

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.5 "There's No 'I' in Team" Recap (Page 1/3)
Thursday, October 23, 2008
Previously on Grey's Anatomy: MerDer revolutionized the treatment of inoperable brain tumors and George finally graduated from being a lowly intern. Callie visited Hahn's fertile crescent, Lexie lusted after George, and a real-life Army man kissed Cristina.

This week's episode of Grey's Anatomy is fairly easy to follow because there's only one medical case. Of course, that one is a doozie, as Dr. Bailey orchestrates a massive 12-person simultaneous Domino Surgery with six separate kidney transplants. In other news, Callie doesn't like lesbian sex, Meredith finds something minor to fight with Derek about (as she always does) and the residents have some fun choosing which intern George gets........ there’s more

'Grey's Anatomy' Admits Melissa George - Tuesday, October 21, 2008
The romance between Dr. Callie Torres and Dr. Erica Hahn certainly has Grey’s Anatomy fans talking this season. Neither has even been in a relationship with a woman before and on last week’s episode, we saw just how awkward and uncomfortable it can be when you charge ahead into new territory. Callie, having taken Bailey’s advice, lets Erica know that there has to be rules – and safety words. Erica was relieved that she wasn’t the only one freaking out and the two headed out on their first official date. Things won’t stay smooth between these two for too much longer as a new bisexual intern, played by Melissa George, hits Seattle Grace and stirs things up....cont’d

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy- There's No I In Team
Meredith gets pissy with Derek for taking the credit for their clinical trial, Sloan teaches Callie how to love the glazed donut, George picks up some interns in the expansion draft, Bailey and the Chief try to but Seattle Grace back on the map, and Lexie Alex and Izzie learn lessons in caring.
All of Seattle Grace is abuzz with the news of a major medical journal publishing Derek and Meredith's clinical trial, but Meredith's upset that it's only called "The Shepherd Method", with no mention of her contribution. Sloan seems to be at once envious and inspired, mocking Shepherd's fame while doing research of his own into possible experimental treatments for ENT complications. Chief is excited because the fame from Shepherd being published and Bailey's planned domino kidney transplant procedure could put the hospital back on the map. ..............cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': The Domino Effect - Oct 24, 2008
While Bailey tries to give six people new kidneys from six other donors, Callie turns to Sloan for some technical advice, and Lexie wises up. PACK LEADER As usual, Bailey is out in front of her ducklings, this time spearheading a complex set of surgeries

I wish I could be all Grey's Anatomy-voiceover-like and come up with a stretched metaphor to explain why I'm giving you my commentary liveblog style, but...Oh, wait, I got it! See, lives were saved — and, in fact, nobody even died! — so think of this as a celebration of lives...life...whatever. Honestly, I just had a lot of minute-by-minute thoughts on this episode, which was rife with kidney transplants, intern trading, and cunnilingus discussions (something there are far too few of in mainstream popular culture). Apologies if the minute-by-minute is slightly off; I did my best, but please do not synchronize your DVR viewing to this account. Here goes:

9:01 In voiceover Meredith says, "We like to think we're independent, loners, mavericks...." And now I hate that I'm thinking about Sarah Palin. I hate even more that I'm thinking about her instead of McCain. Even more still that it's during Callie and Hahn's lesbian date scene. And even more still, that now I'm imagining ABC calling her in for a guest spot — she is quite the little ratings-getter. Ah, no worries, they'd probably send her to Private Practice first, since they need a lot more help...................... there’s more

LA TIMES

'Grey's Anatomy': The truth of the (medical) matter - 10:01 PM PT, Oct 23 2008
Tonight’s episode of "Grey’s Anatomy" was chock-full o’ twists: Alex kissed Izzie. Christina crossed paths again with the charismatic Army doc. And Callie had sex with Erica — and Mark! Yet somehow, in the midst of all that lusty madness, the Seattle Gracers still managed to pull off one of their biggest surgical coups yet: domino kidney transplants, which involved 12 patients, six kidneys and one “Alias” alum (go, Carl Lumbly!). But perhaps the bigger curveball is that the incredible medical procedure wasn’t simply dreamed up by "Grey's" writers for dramatic purposes. Earlier this year, surgeons at Johns Hopkins actually did perform what is believed to be the first successful six-way donor kidney swap. The surgeries took 10 hours, six operating rooms and, says Elizabeth Klaviter, "Grey’s" director of medical research, 100 physicians. (Johns Hopkins pioneered domino kidney transplants, though with fewer patients, several years ago.) “The idea has been pretty interesting to us for quite some time,” says Klaviter, who monitors the show’s medical accuracy and has been with "Grey’s" since Season 1. “It’s new and cutting-edge and really cool.”
Less cool: Meredith’s botched assist. (She — gasp! — dropped one of the kidneys, though ultimately it was saved and transplanted.) According to Klaviter, even that story point was accurate. Pretty much. “Organs don’t get dropped very often,” she allows, “but if you’re in a situation where there’s a life depending on that organ and there’s not another one readily available, there isn’t a lot of choice [other than to] use it. They’d just clean it first.”

Organ swaps don’t go smoothly on ‘Grey’s’ - Oct 23, 2008
Six donors and six recipients have the Seattle Grace doctors scrambling
The sisterhood of no pants: Sex kicked off the episode as Callie and Hahn — as Callie explained it to Sloan the next day — “did it, sort of.” Callie despaired, though, that she was unable to venture into some of the unexplored territories she discussed with Bailey last week, because it felt “clinical.” McSteamy balked, not eager to hear about unsatisfying girl-on-girl action. Eventually, Callie talked him into giving her some lessons, and she gained enough confidence to utter to Hahn those tender words everyone longs to hear: “Drop your pants.”
Extra credit: Awkwardness flared between Derek and Meredith after an article about their clinical trial — on which she arguably took the lead — credited only him for the work. After condescending to her for most of the episode about how he’d try to get her credited even though he didn’t think a lowly resident deserved it, Derek took some advice from Bailey and actually thanked her. He also gave her a kidney in a jar, which pleased her, because Meredith remains deeply odd.
Hospital doings: That kidney came from Bailey’s massive “domino”-style transplant, involving six donors and six recipients and a complex swap. Five donors were the loved ones of recipients, while one seemed to be a simple Good Samaritan. ..............cont’d

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "There's No 'I' in Team" - Oct 24, 2008
Derek ends up on the cover of a medical journal this week, but not everyone is singing his praises. Meanwhile, Callie depresses Mark by revealing the dirt on her first night with Erica and the docs at Seattle Grace take part in a highly publicized domino surgery.
This week's episode started off with a bang! Not only did we find out that Callie and Erica went "pretty much" all the way on their first date, but we also learned that the "5 second rule" also applies to organs dropped on a hospital floor! Sadly, this latter note reminded me that similar things probably happen in restaurant kitchens with food all the time, but let's not think about that, shall we?

Chyler Leigh: Lexie with McDreamy Would've Been a Nightmare! - Oct 23, 2008
Chyler Leigh may not be sure whether Grey's Anatomy's Lexie and George will ever be on the same page romantically, but one thing she knows for certain: Mer's sis setting her sights on Derek would have been a prescription for disaster. In this Q&A, Leigh lets loose on Lexie's love life, the tease of being Ellen Pompeo's "sister" and much more.

TVGuide.com: Let's start off talking about this week's episode, where "Lexie goes to great lengths to have George notice her romantically," says the ABC logline. What's involved?
Chyler Leigh: Lexie's just kind of throwing herself out there – obviously, in her mind, but he's just not getting it.

TVGuide.com: No, he's not.
Leigh: He's completely oblivious. [Laughs] Even little comments that she is making repeatedly....

TVGuide.com: Like, "Let's go out and celebrate you passing the exam!"
Leigh: "Let's go out and celebrate," and then she's left in the dust. Even so, she didn't really take that too close to heart. She just keeps throwing herself under the bus....................... more

TV SQUAD
Grey's Anatomy: There's No "I" In Team - Oct 24th 2008
(S05E05) "Interns - the other white meat." - Alex

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a kidney today! The rare opportunity of being able to perform a domino procedure has finally come to Seattle Grace (thanks to Bailey's efforts), and with the bad shape that SGH has been in lately, it couldn't have come at a better time. They need some good headlines.

But as with all in-depth Grey's Anatomy plots, there is no way you're going to get 12 kidney donors/recipients together without there being some drama. Hey, people with severe renal failure still have daddy issues and engage in extramarital sex too you know.

One guy had an affair with the woman who was giving him a kidney and that meant his wife wasn't going to give a kidney to a complete stranger and that's a problem. One person drops out, and well... that's why they call it a domino procedure. However, I was far more interested in the plot thread involving Carl Lumbly, whom I shall only refer to as Dixon (I miss Alias), and his estranged relationship with his son.

I say that because the second we found out that they had issues and Dixon was paying off his kid to give up his kidney, I thought, "Perfect! This means we'll get some character development out of Alex since no one on this show can have any real emotional growth until they've treated a patient with the same (or similar) issues!" And that's exactly what happened. Alex and Izzie finally seem to be back on track after they kissed at the end. The guy has a heart after all and he can get just as emotionally involved with a case as Izzie does... if the right buttons are pushed..................cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': Domino Theory -- with kidneys - Oct 23, 2008
No one on Grey's Anatomy is an island, no matter how much they sometimes wish they were. This week we find everyone wrestling with expectations -- their own and others', plus some cool surgeries, preening and scowling by the male attendings and some banter that was better suited to Showtime than the 9 p.m. timeslot on network TV.
A cascade of falling spoilers ahead...
As she rushes out the door to answer Bailey's early page, Meredith sees Derek reading from the Annals of American Neurosurgery, on the cover of which his smiling face appears, recognized for the clinical trial he and Meredith did with viruses and inoperable brain tumors. The article dubs the treatment "The Shepherd Method." Never mind that Meredith was the one who came up with the idea and convinced him to work with her on the trial.

Skin So Soft - Oct 15, 2008
Meredith is all stupid because her hot, naked boyfriend discovered her mother's super-secret diary while he was looking for a place to stash his clothes. Instead of behaving like a normal person, she gets all pissy and refuses to talk to him, or look at what the diary says, until she finally realizes she's being a moron and he's the most understanding boyfriend of all time. This is actually by far the most annoying part of the entire episode, and no one else really irks me. Something strange is definitely going on here.

Christina is irritated that she's been stuck in the clinic treating patients who have rashes instead of major injuries. But her journey leads her to the mythical land of dermatology, a previously unexplored part of the hospital where residents get constant massages and there is fresh fruit. The rest of the surgical residents come to marvel at this place for what seems like hours on end and no one seems to mind or care where they are... except for Christina's dying, rashy patient and George, who has been left to pick up Meredith's slack. But George works it out, showing a freaked-out kid the scariest thing ever and convinces the reluctant, pint-sized patient to stop terrorizing the hospital and go through with the surgery. And he gets the news that he's passed his exam, at which point he starts ignoring his lowly-but-loyal intern pal Lexie........more

ABC's "Life on Mars" Posts Increases Over its Week-Ago Premiere and
Beats CBS' "Eleventh Hour" Among Adults 18-34 and Key Women

Thursday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
Opposite Game 2 of Fox's "2008 World Series," ABC earned second on Thursday among Adults 18-49 (3.5/9). The Network won the evening among Adults 18-34 (3.2/9) and Women 18-34 (4.9/13), taking the top position on the night with Women 18-34 in all 5 Thursdays this season.

"Ugly Betty" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
ABC's "Ugly Betty" delivered a best since premiere performance in both Total Viewers (8.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.8/8). In fact, it was the 3rd straight week for "Ugly Betty" to post week-to-week increases in the key adult sales demo. Additionally, the program registered season highs among Teens 12-17 (1.4/5) and Kids 2-11 (1.2/4). The program towered over NBC's comedies by a season best 3.0 million viewers and by 22% in Adults 18-49 ("My Name is Earl"/"Kath & Kim" = 5.7 million & 2.3/6 in AD18-49). Besting its nearest competition in the hour by 19% in Women 18-34 (3.8/11 vs. 3.2/9 - CBS' "Survivor: Gabon"), "Betty" ranked No. 1 at 8 p.m. for the 5th straight week among young women.

"Grey's Anatomy" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" took second in the 9 o'clock hour in Total Viewers (14.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (5.3/13). The ABC medical drama led the hour by 20% in Adults 18-34 over second-place NBC (5.3/14 vs. 4.4/11). "Grey's" outperformed third-place "C.S.I." by 61% in Adults 18-34 (5.3/14 vs. 3.3/9).

Please Note: In one of the most competitive time periods on television, with Game 2 of the World Series in the competitive mix this week, it's likely there was an even higher than normal amount of DVR recording occurring in the Thursday's 9 o'clock hour this week. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" will be a definite beneficiary once all the DVR playback is counted in the Live + 7 Day numbers, as the ABC medical drama is TV's most-recorded and played-back show. This season "Grey's Anatomy" is the biggest actual gainer from the originally-reported numbers (Live + Same Day) to the finalized DVR playback numbers (Live + 7 Day), surging by +2.7 million viewers and gaining an additional +1.3 Adult 18-49 rating points (+18%).

* For the second straight week, "Grey's" was the evening's No. 1 television program with Adults 18-34 and across all key Women demographics (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

"Life on Mars" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's freshman drama, "Life on Mars," beat CBS' freshman drama, "Eleventh Hour," among Adults 18-34 (2.0/6 vs. 1.9/6) and Women 18-34 (3.0/8 vs. 2.4/6).

* "Life on Mars" built on its week-ago series premiere in Adults 18-34 (2.0/6 vs. 1.9/6), Women 18-34 (3.0/8 vs. 2.6/7) and Women 18-49 (3.5/9 vs. 3.3/8).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 20% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
