Member #23 Joined: October 25, 2006	SIDES & SUMMARIES Episode 5.04 A male patient named Arnie goes to the ER after his wife Maureen threw a remote control at him claiming that he is boring! A doctor explains to Arnie that he's been lethargic because of a bening brain tumor. This could explain why he mostly slept through a trip he took with his wife. Arnie is concerned that Maureen wants to divorce him. However, when she learns that he is sick, Maureen feels really bad. To convince a kid to let the nurse put an IV on him, a doctor agrees to have one put on his own arm. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sides for Episode 5.04: Thanks to Linda, and Crys over at TWoP: Summary Mrs. Borsokowski (60’s) – Mrs. B is sitting on the bed. Dr. Swanson gives Dr. Walters the chart. Dr. Walters reads the symptoms ( redness, itching, inflammation) and diagnosis a rash. Mrs. B says she’s heard that Dr. Walters is the mean one so she wants another doctor. Dr. Walters examines Mrs. B’s skin and says her skin condition has desecrated her whole arm and she’ll likely need a skin graft or reconstructive surgery. Dr. Walters moves on to another patient, Dr. Swanson sees that Mrs. B is starting to freak out. Dr. Swanson takes a look at the arm and says Mrs. B has a rash and not flesh eating bacteria so it’s probably nothing. Mrs. B asks Dr. S if she’s sure that it won’t turn into something bad. Dr. S once again says it’s only a rash and they’ll get her some cream from Dermatology. Dr. S leaves and Mrs. B calls out to Dr.W saying he’s wrong. Dr. Daisy Pepman (30-ish) – Dr. Smith walks through the door and Dr. Daisy Pepman is at the nurses station. Daisy spots Dr.S and introduces herself and asks if she can help him. Dr.S asks Daisy where he could get some medical cream. Daisy says the nurses are busy but if Dr.S doesn’t mind waiting a bit she’ll get the cream for Dr.S herself. Daisy asks Dr.S if he would like some water with lemon while he waits. Dr.S accepts the offer and Daisy reaches over with one hand to fetch a nice pitcher. Daisy’s other hand is being massaged by a man standing next to her. Dr. S stares confused and Daisy explains that Chris is their massage therapist. They do such delicate work so it’s important their hands stay healthy. They have Chris on staff to work on them when they have some spare time. Dr. S asks if every attending gets their hands massaged at work. Daisy replies saying attendings have another therapist, Chris is for residents only. Dr.S asks Daisy if she’s a resident and she says she’s a 1st year resident and loving it. Chris' hands move up Daisy’s arm and go to work on her neck. Maureen – patient is Arnie Grandy and Maureen is his wife. They are both in their 60’s. It’s morning and Arnie is in the ER with a gash on his head. Dr. Walters comes in and asks what happened. Maureen threw the remote at Arnie’s head. Maureen is angry because all Arnie can do is sit around watching TV or fall asleep. Arnie tries to calm her down but Maureen says she’s going to divorce him and as soon as he gets his head treated they are going to a lawyer. Dr. Walters starts cleaning and stitching the wound. Maureen asks Dr. W if she’s ever been to Europe and Dr. W says she hasn’t but she’ll go someday. Maureen tells Dr.W to not wait till she’s retired and she’s with a man that can’t even be bothered to look out the window. Maureen says she waited 25 years to go on a trip around the world and when they went on a 6 month trip around the world, Arnie slept through the whole thing. Arnie says he worked for 30 years so he was tired. Maureen says she’s tired of being married to someone who has no interest in the world. Maureen goes to the cafeteria to get some coffee while Dr.W continues to stitch Arnie’s head. (waiting area – evening) Dr. Walters finds Maureen and informs her that her husband is in post-op. The procedure took longer than they thought and was tough but Dr.W thinks that overall things went very well. Maureen is distraught and starts sobbing. Dr.W tries to reassure her that Arnie should pull through and he’ll be okay. Maureen, sobbing, because Arnie was sick and she told him he was a bad, lazy and boring person. Arnie slept through 6 continents and she berated him the whole trip. Dr.W says he was sick and Maureen didn’t know. Maureen says she’s should have known because she’s his wife. Arnie worked hard his whole life and his retirement has been her yelling at him and saying he’s a bad person. Maureen thinks she doesn’t deserve him. Dr. W sits down next to Maureen and says that retirement is a whole different world from they’re other life together. It’s like they are in a whole new relationship and they have to get to know each other again. It may be hard but it may be nice. They get to try again. Maureen looks at Dr.W with gratitude. David – David and Lauren, around 28 years old, are parents to 8 year-old Duncan who’s there for heart surgery. (outside Duncan’s room in the hallway) Duncan races down the hall, grabs onto a T-Stand and uses it as a scooter. His parents, David and Lauren come out of the room and run after him while calling his name. Dr. Smith is also in on the chase and they all catch up in the waiting area where Duncan is standing on a chair with his hand on the fire alarm lever. His parents tell him to not pull the lever. Duncan says he isn’t gong to have surgery. David pleads with him but Duncan says no. Duncan isn’t defiant, he’s just scared but he doesn’t move. (Duncan’s room) Duncan is in bed looking miserable (so are his parents) and has a model airplane in his hand. Dr. Tomson enters and Lauren apologizes and says Duncan’s a good kid. David says it’s their fault because they should’ve been able to stop Duncan and they feel awful for it. Dr.T tells them to not worry about it. Lauren says if Dr.T’s boss or the hospital are mad at someone to please not be mad at Duncan. Lauren is scared and starts to tear up. Dr. T reassures them that no one is mad at Duncan. Lauren and David smile with relief and gratefulness. Dr.T tells Duncan he’s just going to put in an IV. Duncan says no and David tells him it won’t hurt. Dr.T tells Duncan that he’ll have a nurse put one in his arm first. Dr.T pulls out his arm as a nurse is about to insert the IV. Duncan’s parents are shocked and impressed. David remarks that Dr.T is really good at this and asks him if he has kids. Dr.T says he doesn’t but that he was an airplane guy at when he was Duncan’s age and airplane guys like to know how things work. David puts an arm around Lauren who’s scared that Duncan is going through this but relieved that Dr.T got through to him. Lauren – First part is similar to David’s with them chasing after Duncan. Dr. Tomson arrives to do pre-op stuff on Duncan and finds Lauren sitting outside Duncan’s room on the floor close to tears. Lauren apologizes and asks if she’s not supposed to sit there. Dr.T says it’s alright and asks if she’s ok. Lauren says that David went to get sandwiches and Duncan is packing to leave. Lauren is upset because she isn’t able to stop Duncan and think she sucks at this. She tells Dr.T that she’s tired and fried because every night she stays awake to hear Duncan breathe because she’s afraid his heart will stop and he’ll die while she was asleep. She wants to be a mom who’ll protect her kid but she doesn’t know how to do it. She says she’s 27 years old and all her friends still go to bars. Dr.T says that nobody knows how to be a mom of a sick kid, it’s not something that is taught. Dr.T tells Lauren that she has a very smart kid and they all have to up their game. Dr.T asks Lauren if he can give it a try, Lauren tells him to go ahead ...[Message truncated] (Means ABC cut off the post for being too long, so I don't know if there's supposed to be more.) Crys speculations on the sides: I think the Dr. with Maureen/Arnie is Meredith. I think Maureen and Arnie having to get to know each other again due to the change in their life and relationship with Arnie's retirement will relate to MerDer having to get to know each other now that their life and relationship has changed because they are living together. It goes with what Shonda said about them living together. This also seems to be a Neuro case so this will also be with Derek. I think on Mrs. Borsokowski's case it'll be perhaps Cristina and Lexie. Dr. Walters seems pretty annoyed that Mrs.B only has a rash and Mrs. B refers to this Dr as the "mean one". I think Lexie, as Cristina's intern, may be Dr. Swanson and sees that Mrs.B is freaking out by what Dr.Walters said and tries to calm her down by telling her it's nothing serious and she'll just need a cream for her rash. The only other Dr. that I could see being referred to as the "mean one" and annoyed that it's only a rash is Alex but I'm leaning towards Cris. Dr. Daisy Pepman... this had me going 'huh?!' when I first read it. I think Dr.Smith is McKidd's character. This Dr is an attending and it's obvious he's not familiar with things at SGH. Lauren/David/Duncan - this one is harder. This is a cardio case so we'll be seeing Hahn here. Dr.Tomson doesn't have kids of his own but he has a way with them. This Dr was also into airplanes as a kid. I'm think Dr.Tomson may be George (or maybe even Alex because he too has shown that he's good with kids). Some extra parts not included in the script or the above summary: Credit WindSprints at TWoP for passing this one on, and McSunny16. Two new sides were released, a nurse and Arnie. I know Crys usually summarizes (and does way better!, thanks Crys!) but here's a quick glimpse of what is in the sides: Nurse is just one line about sutures, its an ER nurse. Arnie has a tumor. Dr. Simms talks to Arnie and Maureen. He's been lethargic due to the tumor. Maureen asks how she was supposed to know, Arnie says she should have given him the benefit of the doubt, not throw electronics at him. Dr. Simms tells him its a complicated procedure, that he should discuss with Maureen. Arnie tells the doctor that he's sure Maureen thinks its worth the risk, that he is so boring without the surgery. Maureen is pissed at being blamed and upset for the way she treated him. Later, Dr. Simms is in Arnie's room. He's sad. He tells her that he has a tumor it took 5 doctors to diagnose and a wife that wanted to divorce him even before she knew he was damaged goods. He asks her what if it wasn't just the tumor. They never spent more than an hour together and now they are together all the time. What if she has figured out she doesn't like him? Dr. Simms says he is likable. Arnie tells her she's a nice kid. She asks how he feels about Dr. Smith, he says ok, she tells him Dr. Smith will be taking over the case now. Dr. Simms tells him Dr. Smith is very good. Arnie doesn't want someone new.
