RECAPS & REVIEWS & RATINGS BUDDYTV Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.4 "Brave New World" Recap (Part 1/3) Thursday, October 16, 2008 Grey's Anatomy begins tonight at the frat house. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) interrupts Derek (Patrick Dempsey) in his bedroom, where he is inappropriately naked, save for a pillow covering his privates. He's waiting for Meredith to come home. Izzie asks Derek to ask Alex for 20 bucks for the pizza she just ordered because Alex (Justin Chambers) isn't talking to her. Meredith is helping Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) move into their beautiful new apartment. Hahn is also there assisting Callie and making Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina extremely uncomfortable. Hahn (Brooke Smith) asks Callie on a date. A date-date, actually, with perhaps some taking off of clothes at the end. Izzie finally stands up for herself with Alex - cut his ass! Hahn and Torres have a lack of progress in their non-relationship - damn I'm bored! Cristina begins to expand her interests but she'll never leave surgery. George finds out the results of his exam - I can't believe he didn't pass last time. All that, and this is probably the calmest episode this season! Meredith freaks out that Derek found her mom's diary when he was trying to find a place for his clothes. Cue an entire episode of them whining to their friends and having anxiety attacks over the memory of Mrs. Gray. ..... more http://www.cinemablend.com/television/TV-Recap-Grey-s-Anatomy-Brave-New-World-12847.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- EW.COM EW - TV Watch TV Watch 'Grey's Anatomy': Breakthroughs - Oct 17, 2008 Callie and Hahn go on a real date, Alex opens up (a little) to Izzie, and Derek and Meredith overcome an emotional stumbling block with minimal drama Here it was, the Grey's Anatomy that I was missing last week! Tons of humor, tons of heart, only occasional surgeries, and not a leak in sight. In fact, I so enjoyed this episode that I shall recap it in the form of a love letter — no, even better, a love list. Herewith, the best things about Grey's this week: The naked $20-bill pass Izzie knocked on Derek and Meredith's bedroom door, and a naked (but for a pillow) Derek answered. Izzie asked for cash to pay the pizza guy, complaining that Alex owed her $20 but was not speaking to her. Derek sent her into the bathroom, called Alex out and asked him for $20, and handed it to Izzie, all without putting on a stitch. Of course, this was way better visually. What if it all goes horribly wrong? Even worse, what if it goes incredibly right? That could potentially lead to date No. 2 and No. 3 and a relationship and love and being vulnerable and trusting and all sorts of terrifying goodness. And really, who needs that? Looks like Callie and Erica just might. The Seattle Grace colleagues finally braved their first same-sex date, and it was sparky and funny and full of promise. Making it to that dinner, which thankfully did not take place at Joe’s bar, provided the episode with some of its best moments. Like a palpably anxious Callie hilariously oversharing with a surprised Dr. Bailey: “There’s been kissing but no touching and what if I’m not into it? What if I’m horrible at all that stuff south of the border?” And Dr. Bailey’s equally amusing, and ultimately affecting, attempt to later calm Callie’s nerves. This week, they were conveniently thrown together at work as well, where trouble escalated after Izzie realized that her patient, Asymmetrical Mouth, was sporting an undiagnosed neurological problem. The minute she stepped away, Alex snaked her by fibbing to Derek that she’d abandoned the case and by taking her spot. Izzie bested him in the end, and later, he finally confessed that he’s been acting like a complete jerk to her only because he’s angry and she’s all he has. Meanwhile, Cristina uncovers a hidden gem at Seattle Grace. The light-hearted fun and camaraderie is back! This episode definitely had elements of surprise and silly fun, which was certainly lacking last season. And not to make use of a bad pun, but by the end of this one I was seriously in stitches! Ha! So, let's start with Callie. The former Mrs. O'Malley sure had herself worked up in a frenzy over a dinner date with Erica. While most people would probably be worrying about getting food stuck in their teeth that night, Callie went the whole nine yards and started fearing the possibility of going all the way. Now, even though Callie had already clued Sloan in on her new romance, she found herself turning to Bailey for advice instead. All I can say is the look on Bailey's face was priceless. In fact, we had to wait quite a while for Bailey's response, which coincidentally, you will, too. Now onto George. How great was he with Duncan (Max Burkholder), the kid who didn't want to have surgery? All I could think was this kid must be the mirror image of George when he was that age. I loved it when he told the kid's dad, "I think us airplane guys just like to know how things work." And he was right, because that's all it took to get Duncan on board for a surgery of his own. Once George started showing Duncan exactly what to expect, everything was fine. But hello? Can we talk about the moment they showed Arnie (Larry Brandenburg) with his face peeled off? I thought for sure that would scar Duncan for life and send him running out of the hospital…but it didn't. The kid loved it!....... there’s more http://www.tvguide.com/Episode-Recaps/greys-anatomy/Grey-Anatomy-Episode-26673.aspx ----------------------------------------------------------------------- TV SQUAD Grey's Anatomy: Brave New World - Oct 17th 2008 (S05E04) "Karev! Give me a twenty!" - Derek OK, before I dive into this episode, let's get the one thing that everyone will be talking about out of the way first: Callie and Hahn. Yes, yes - I know - Grey's Anatomy has a budding lesbian relationship. Based on everything I've read over the past few weeks, people are for or against it for a myriad of reasons and after tonight's "date," I'm ready to pick a side. Let me preface all of this with my feelings on the situation as a whole. I've got no problem with a homosexual relationship on TV. Girl/girl or guy/guy - doesn't bother me one bit. Hell, Six Feet Under is one of my favorite shows of all time and that had some seriously, um, vivid stuff. Regardless, it felt natural. Granted, HBO allows for a little more freedom, but still - Callie and Hahn do not feel natural. Watching them makes me more uncomfortable than an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It's just plain old awkward and I really hope it either a.) goes away fast, or b.) finds a better direction even faster. OK, moving on...................there’s more http://www.tvsquad.com/2008/10/17/greys-anatomy-brave-new-world/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ZAP2IT 'Grey's Anatomy': Professional vs. Personal - October 16, 09:35 PM Like most hospital shows, Grey's Anatomy is best when it focuses on the medicine rather than the characters. Tonight made for some interesting cases -- and then focused pretty much entirely on the characters. Unquestionably, there were some moments that saved it. Which is why I'm beginning my "Give Chandra Wilson an Emmy" campaign right now. But first, a little plot. Spoilers, served up with some raspberry water, ahead... At its core, tonight's show was all about the line between personal and professional -- and on the need to have boundaries between them. The fact that those lines blurred to the point of non-existence has affected people's relationships, people's careers, and the hospital's precious ranking. And something clearly has to give. Oh, and Patrick Dempsey was naked -- waiting for Meredith au naturel when she spotted her mother's diary on the nightstand. He found it when he was trying to make space for his stuff in a closet -- which sent Meredith into a tizzy about space and boundaries and what have you. But that's more of a backdrop....... more..... http://blog.zap2it.com/ithappenedlastnight/2008/10/greys-anatomy-p.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode Four, "Brave New World" It's been a long time since Grey's Anatomy really made me laugh, but I spent the better part of this week's episode cracking up. There are a couple of "brave new worlds" to explore — dermatology, and the Wild West, and, um, Africa — and George reminds us why we liked him in the first place. To talk about it, just read more. Derek-as-housemate was never going to be easy for anyone: Derek feels like the only adult among children with their petty problems. Meredith can't understand why Derek can't just be there without going through all of her stuff (or, more accurately, Ellis's stuff). And Izzie and Alex seem to think that having Derek as a roommate affords them a new intimacy at work. Very little of the episode actually takes place in the house, but nearly everything ties back to this new, weird living situation. Take the Izzie/Alex feud: In this episode, he not only blows her off — he steals her patient. And that's the last straw, because she's messed with her own career enough that having someone else mess with it is really not cool. She gets some advice from Mark about treating surgery like the Wild West and shooting asses in Montana or something, but the point is, she uses her personal connections with patients for good and gets the surgery back. And then, in one of the more somber moments, she learns that Alex isn't mad at her; he just can't be mad at Rebecca, and Izzie's an easy target......more http://buzzsugar.com/2380416 Grey's Anatomy: Brave and New, Indeed - Friday, October 17, 2008 So I know I said the other day that I was going to blog during class. Fear not—I was not actually paying attention to my professor, but some other, more important things came up. Like picking off all my nail polish. Now, that’s not to say that there aren’t important things to be blogging about. There are, and let’s get to them. Last night’s Grey’s was amazing. It was written by my favorite Grey’s writer, Debora Cahn, a West Wing transplant who was the only one who could bring the banter after Aaron Sorkin left. As an aside, when I met the West Wing crew a few years back, I asked a producer if she’d written the episode we were watching being filmed; he said Debora Cahn (who had written the ep) was John Spencer’s favorite post-Sorkin writer, too. Everyone loves her; she is amazing. http://chaosingeneral.blogspot.com/2008/10/greys-anatomy-brave-and-new-indeed.html RATINGS "Grey's Anatomy": Primetime's reigning DVR champ - Oct 13, 2008 Interesting to see the networks getting more aggressive about reporting their DVR numbers. ABC today is touting "Grey's Anatomy" (pictured above) retaining its crown as the most-DVR'd show of the season so far. The medical drama's Sept. 25 season preem numbers (18.5 million viewers, 7.4 in 18-49) don't look so soft when you add in 2.7 million viewers and 1.3 demo rating points from DVR playback viewing in the week after the premiere telecast. (The premiere ratings are based on the new industry standard of Live-Plus-Same Day, which means the aud for the initial telecast plus those that watched it on the same day of the preem.)................cont’d http://weblogs.variety.com/on_the_air/2008/10/greys-anatomy-p.html DVR Playback: Grey's Thrives Most from Live + 7 Ratings - Oct 14, 2008 Better light is being shed on the ratings for the week of Sept. 22 — widely considered to be the official launch of this TV season — now that Live + 7 Nielsen numbers have come in. (Whereas the fast nationals reported every morning capture live viewing plus same-night DVR playback, Live + 7 includes any recorded show watched up to a week later.) Among the superlatives being bandied about, ABC can tout that Grey's Anatomy and its season premiere enjoyed the largest gain of any show, adding 2.7 million total viewers once Live + 7 is factored in. That brings the the hit drama's premiere audience to 21.2 mil. With DVR marketplace penetration now at 20 percent (up eight percent year-over-year), Grey's' playback increase was up 29 percent from last season's average. While ABC saw a total of four shows (including Housewives, Boston Legal and Brothers & Sisters) gain a million or more viewers, CBS had five — the most of any network — in that esteemed club: CSI: Miami (which added 1.47 mil to its original premiere audience of 17.3 mil), NCIS (leaping to 19.4 mil), Without a Trace, freshman hit The Mentalist and Criminal Minds. House and Sarah Connor are giving Fox its greatest gains in DVR playback, with both shows goosing their numbers by some 15 percent. For House, that means an increase in excess of two million. The Peacock's best boast is that Heroes, which opened to softer-than-expected numbers, saw its performance in the 18-49 demo soar 20 percent with Live + 7. The CW, meanwhile, points out that 90210 gains nearly a full rating point in the netlet's "sweet spot" of women 18-34. http://www.tvguide.com/News/DVR-Ratings-Grey-26425.aspx ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Skin So Soft - Oct 15, 2008 Meredith is all stupid because her hot, naked boyfriend discovered her mother's super-secret diary while he was looking for a place to stash his clothes. Instead of behaving like a normal person, she gets all pissy and refuses to talk to him, or look at what the diary says, until she finally realizes she's being a moron and he's the most understanding boyfriend of all time. This is actually by far the most annoying part of the entire episode, and no one else really irks me. Something strange is definitely going on here. Christina is irritated that she's been stuck in the clinic treating patients who have rashes instead of major injuries. But her journey leads her to the mythical land of dermatology, a previously unexplored part of the hospital where residents get constant massages and there is fresh fruit. The rest of the surgical residents come to marvel at this place for what seems like hours on end and no one seems to mind or care where they are... except for Christina's dying, rashy patient and George, who has been left to pick up Meredith's slack. But George works it out, showing a freaked-out kid the scariest thing ever and convinces the reluctant, pint-sized patient to stop terrorizing the hospital and go through with the surgery. And he gets the news that he's passed his exam, at which point he starts ignoring his lowly-but-loyal intern pal Lexie........more http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/show/greys_anatomy/brave_new_world.php How the West Was Won By Lauren S | Season 5 | Episode 4 | Aired on 2008.10.15 First things first, an correction of sorts that I should have made last week -- I now know that there is a refresh button on many, many keyboards out there. I was in fact completely uninformed and wrong. Noooo! Don't worry, I'm sure it will never, ever happen again. For at least a page or two. "In 6500 B.C., some guy looked at his sick friend and said, 'I have an idea. Why don't I drill a hole in your skull? It'll make you feel better.' And thus, surgery was born." That's quite an opening voiceover this week. Izzie is skulking down the hall and listens at a door. After some back and forth, she decides to knock super quietly, and the door is pulled open by Derek, wearing a pillow over his naughty bits. She's rather delighted, but he interrupts her gawking to say that Mere isn't there and that he's waiting for her. When he asks what she wants, she goes into a very long and ridiculous story about ordering a pizza, and Alex owing her $20, but that he won't pay her because of the crying, she thought for a moment he might be human... it's annoying, classic Izzie, I'm sure you can fill in the rest in a self-righteous voice. Derek tells her to go into the bathroom and once she's hiding, hollers for Alex to give him $20. He does without even asking and once his door is closed, he hands it over to Izzie. She's amazed and now thinks he's cool, rather than just hairy. She offers him some pizza but he slams the door in her face like I wish I could do quite often. Mere's VO continues: "It takes a certain brand of crazy to come up with an idea like drilling into somebody's skull. But surgeons have always been a confident bunch." And a super bitchy bunch, if this show is to be believed. Cristina and Callie are moving into the new apartment with the help of Meredith and Erica. Cristina pauses in the living room with a box of her clothes, but Callie orders her to put them in her room, adding that the living room won't be a dumping ground. Has she learned nothing in the time they've already been roommates? Once she's gone, Cristina rests the box elsewhere in the living room and Erica asks acidly, "Did you not hear her?" Cristina's answer is to drop the box in the middle of the floor and leave it. Seriously, I hate that Erica is so 100% different from Callie versus the others. I get that she's an attending, but watching her be a bitch to everyone is just tiresome. She reminds me of guys I've dated and how relieved I had been to break up with them and not feel like I was having to run interference between my significant others and my friends and family. But Callie doesn't seem to mind, so here we are. Cristina makes a comment about Callie needing a new best friend. ...... lots more http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/show/greys_anatomy/brave_new_world_1.php Edited by oncetherewasaway, Oct 24 2008, 12:41 AM.
