Member #23 Joined: October 25, 2006	SIDES & SUMMARIES Casting Sides 5.03 Thanks to Crys at TWoP and Linda Administrator – (Interior hospital room) Tom is trying to make himself comfortable in the midst of the hospital bed and table. The Administrator looks at his watch and says that the Fellowship Committee won’t meet for another two weeks and asks Tom if he wants to do the paperwork there. Tom says he does and he’s ready. The Administrator hands Tom the forms and just when he’s about to start filling them out he hears a monitor flatlining in the next room and a team of medical professionals rush by. Tom remarks that it’s loud in there and the Administrator says that is why they usually do this in his office. Tom miserably hands the forms back to the Administrator. Eli Doyle – (interior Mr. Doyle’s neuro test taking room) Dr. Smith is running several tests on Eli when Dr. Harper walks in. Dr.Smith asks Eli how’s the pain and he answers wincing that it’s a 9. Dr. Harper approaches Eli and tells him he’s a board certified ENT. Eli remarks that he’s seen 16 ENTs and none of them were able to help him. Dr. H asks Eli for permission to run a quick test and he agrees. Dr. H takes a metal pointer and inserts it into Eli’s nose. Dr. H tells Eli he’s going to touch his “medical” nerve and if the nerve is inflamed he’ll feel a sharp pain. Eli leaps out of the chair screaming and it’s a combination of overwhelming pain and overwhelming joy for finding the cause of his pain. Eli is left feeling relieved…. (interior Eli’s room) Eli is in bed staring out the window. Dr. Harper enters and says she needs to draw some blood and do "medical" before he can be taken to surgery. Eli greets her with a smile. Dr. H asks him how’s his pain and he answers an 8. Dr. H apologizes saying he looked like he had some relief. Eli answers that he’s spent 7 years trying every pain killer and nothing helped. He’s had doctors tell him it’s his imagination, that he’s crazy and called him a drug addict. His wife died last year after spending years carting him around from doctor to doctor, test to test. His wife died and he couldn’t feel the pain because he was too occupied with THIS pain. It’s been 7 years, 38 doctors and he finally knows what’s wrong and Dr. Smith is going to fix it so Dr. H is right and Eli is feeling some relief. Eli smiles and Dr. H smiles back. Dr. Smith walks into Eli’s recovery room and he is sobbing uncontrollably. Dr. S asks Eli if he’s in greater pain and then Dr. S realizes... Dr. S explains to Eli that he didn’t have surgery yet. Eli was put under but the surgeon got called away and didn’t do the procedure. Eli asks Dr. S if that means there’s still hope and Dr. S responds affirmatively. Eli cries tears of relief and clings on to Dr. Smith’s hand. Shelley – Dr. Simms prepares Shelley for surgery telling her she’s going to do “medical” on her and then take her down to surgery. Shelley observes Dr.Simms' mood and remarks that she doesn’t know Dr.Simms and apologizes if she’s wrong but that Dr.Simms seems to be stressed/distracted/down. Dr.S says she’s fine. Shelley asks her not to say that because when she got cancer, her whole family, her friends and especially her sister [Jenn] seem like they’ve had their personalities surgically removed and replaced by fake cheerful people who only talk to her about sunshine and kittens and that’s so much worse than cancer. Dr. S smiles and can’t help but to like Shelley. She continues by saying that if Dr.S really is distracted, upset or annoyed by something, it would be the most wonderful medicine if Dr.S would tell her about it. Shelley says she’s desperate for someone to be real with her for 5 minutes. Dr.S sees that Shelley really wants this and asks her if she wants to know what’s going on with her boyfriend or her boss. Shelley’s eyes light up and she says she wants to know about the boyfriend. Dr. Simms is writing a note in Shelley’s chart. Jenn enters and tells Shelley that Mom and Dad are on their way to the new hospital and it’s going to be awesome because Aunt Sue is going to bring her guitar and they are going to throw her a welcome party in her new recovery room. Uncle Dave, Jason and Lucky are coming too and they are bringing an ice cream cake. Shelley says she’s not seven and she’s not one of Jenn’s students. She’s dying of cancer and ice cream cake doesn’t cheer her up. Shelley says that she can’t smile for Jenn and she doesn’t want Jenn to smile for her either and she’d much rather cry with her. Shelley tells Jenn she wants to know about her LIFE, not just her new kittens, but about her bad dates and how much she hates her students’ parents and her life. Shelley wants to know about Jenn’s date last night and says that’s her dying wish. Jenn stands there for a moment stunned and then simply says he had bad BO. Shelley and Jenn laugh. Jenn – Dr.Simms is preparing Shelley for surgery while Jenn arranges things around the room. Jenn asks Shelley if she saw all her new get well cards and Shelley says yes. Jenn tells her that her second graders made them for her with no dark colors or pastels, just happy colors (red, yellow, orange). Dr. Simms informs Shelley that she’s going to do “medical” and then she’s going to be taken down to surgery. Jenn tells Shelley she’s going to call everyone and let them know to start the prayer chain. Jenn asks how long will the surgery be and Dr.S answers it’s hard to say but if all goes well…Jenn states that it will go well and Dr.S says it’ll be at least a couple of hours. Shelley tells Jenn she doesn’t need to ask people to pray the whole time because they’re busy. Jenn, smiling, says they’re happy to do it, when she gets back they’ll call Mom together and she’ll be outside if Shelley needs anything.
