SPOILERS

Grey's Anatomy Spinoff Details - May 1, 2007
ABC is still shying away from officially announcing the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, but recent ads like the one to the left show that they are getting closer and closer to spilling the beans. One can only guess why they have not opened the flood gates just yet, but one reason may be derived from this spot that ABC is running announcing the unofficial ‘pilot’ for the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off tentatively titled “Private Practice.” It could be that knowledge of the spin is an indirect spoiler to this seasons finale, which would include Addison resigning from Grey's Anatomy's Seattle Grace. Read on for more spoilerish details....... (link below for complete article )

Episode 3.22 and 3.23: The Other Side of This Life [2-hour Addison spin off]

New spoiler on 2-hour Addison spin off episode - 18 April 2007
Episode 3.22 and 3.23: The Other Side of This Life [2-hour Addison spin off] - Airdate: May 3, 2007 from 9 to 11 p.m.
new 04/18 - Chris Lowell's receptionist/surfer dude will be shirtless in a scene. It's also pretty obvious in the pilot that he's being groomed as a love interest for Merrin Dungey's fertility expert. And Tim Daly is actually playing an alternative-medicine doc. Addison is going to be penetrated by a little prick. Several little pricks, actually.

Grey's' Spinoff Not All About Addison - 17 April 2007
Two-hour episode also keeps foot in Seattle. Much like Grant Show in Beverly Hills 90210 was for Melrose Place, looks like Addison will be the same. We know her, we know about her, but she is not going to be the primary focus. ABC has released a few more details about the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff, including the fact that even more familiar faces will be present during the two-hour sweeps episode.
------------------------
For starters, there's a definite airdate for the show -- Thursday, May 3 -- and a title, "The Other Side of This Life." That presumably refers to the basis for the potential spinoff, with Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) headed from Seattle to sunny Santa Monica to visit old friends from med school.
------------------------
But the show won't focus entirely on Addison's road trip.
------------------------
Back in Seattle, Cristina (Sandra Oh) is trying on wedding dresses and enduring the input of both her mother and Burke's mom (returning guest star Diahann Carroll) as she plans her wedding. Jane Doe (Elizabeth Reaser) also suffers a setback, forcing Derek (Patrick Dempsey) to perform emergency surgery.
------------------------
The Addison portion of the episode will feature Tim Daly ("The Nine"), Merrin Dungey ("Alias"), Taye Diggs ("Day Break"), Paul Adelstein ("Prison Break"), Amy Brenneman ("Judging Amy") and Chris Lowell ("Veronica Mars"), all of whom are slated for regular roles if the spinoff, currently titled "Private Practice," gets picked up for next season.
------------------------
Former "Everwood" regular Stephanie Niznik, Andrea Bendewald ("Suddenly Susan") and Gary Hershberger ("Six Feet Under") will also appear in the episode. "Grey's" creator Shonda Rhimes wrote the episode, which Michael Grossman directed. Source: Zap2it

Ausiello Report: Violence Erupts on 'Grey’s Anatomy'! - Apr 10, 2007
This weeks top story takes us back to Seattle Grace Hospital where Grey’s Anatomy is preparing to kick its title character while she is down, actually slap is more like. At the end of the May 3rd episode Meredith will get slapped in the face by another character during a tense confrontation and this isn’t an Alexis Crystal grab some popcorn and pull up a seat soapy type cat fight. This one is gonna be ugly, in a ..... I can’t believe he just did that sort of way. I know.... that wasn’t a flub. Meredith’s attacker is a he, even worse it’s someone she very close to. And if this is not enough bad news, this little melee comes on the heels of yet another heartbreaking loss for our poor Meredith. The good news she’s still skinny and beautiful and lets face it that’s what really counts.

Episode 3.22 and 3.23:The Other Side of This Life (unconfirmed title) [2-hour Addison spin off] - Airdate: May 3, 2007
* new 04/04 - The couple who'll go see a therapist in the "spin off" episodes will admit that they are not attracted to one another, never were, and that they got married out of need as both were ready to settle down in their lives. Joan, the pregnant woman, slept with three men the week before she got married, which is why no one knows who the real father is. When she'll get the paternity results, Joan will be stunned. It will be revealed that Beverly, the character who wants plastic surgeries after plastic surgeries, has a brain tumor. Source: SpoilerFix BuddyTV Spoilers Chat

Episode 3.22 and 3.23: Title Unknown [Addison spin off]Airdate: May 3, 2007
* new 03/29 - Following her recent disastrous romantic misfortunes, Addison travels to Santa Monica, Calif., to seek advice from her old medical school pals, Naomi (Merrin Dungey) and Jackson (Taye Diggs) whom she believes have it all: a beautiful teenage daughter, a great marriage and a highly successful health cooperative. Addison quickly learns that Jackson, also a successful TV health guru, has divorced Naomi. During the visit, Addison also meets the rest of the gang at the cooperative: a widowed alternative medicine doctor, a self-doubting therapist, and a male gynecologist who knows little about women, and realizes she is on familiar ground. Addison concludes that the personal lives of the people around her may be a mess, but professionally they stand out. So she decides to leave Seattle Grace behind and join the Oceanside Wellness Group team. That is, of course, if ABC picks up the series, which is a good bet since the cast -- which also includes Chris Lowell ("Veronica Mars"), Amy Brenneman ("Judging Amy"), Tim Daly ("The Nine") and Paul Adelstein ("Prison Break") -- was already paraded before the people with the big bucks. Source: Zap2it

Episode 3.22 and 3.23: Title Unknown [ Addison spin off]Airdate: May 3, 2007
03/27 - Sources say Addison will be reunited with her god-daughter, daughter of Addison's best friend (played by Merrin Dungey) who is a world-renown fertility expert and the big wig at a wellness center. Source: The Ausiello Report

03/27 - Hector [Elizondo] does play Callie's dad, and yes, he is in the spinoff setup episode, but no, Hector is not involved in the spinoff itself, as had been reported in many outlets. So, Mr. Torres and Addison are not running away together. And as I reported in this week's Vine show, she'll have her eye on the sexed up receptionist, Sean Faris from Life as We Know It. Grey's Anatomy Spinoff Pictures! First Look! -April 18, 2007
Here it is folks, your first look at what kind of visual chemistry the Addison centric Grey's Anatomy spin off will have, and so far it is looking good. Most of the shots come from within the wellness center that Addison's friends from med school have set up shop in, an eclectic blend of physicians, psychiatrists, and other specialists. It is a much different 'look' from Grey's Anatomy for sure! If all goes as planned, Addision (Kate Walsh) will be moving in as well, meaning big changes ahead for Grey's Anatomy.... SONG & LYRICS

The Other Side Of This Life Lyrics
» Jefferson Airplane

(Neil)
Would you like to know a secret just between you and me
I don't know where I'm going next, I don't know who I'm gonna be
But that's the other side of this life I've been leading
That's the other side of this life.

Well my whole world's in an uproar, my whole world's upside down
I don"t know where I'm going next, but I'm always bumming around
And that's another side to this life I've been leading
And that's another side to this life

Well I don't know what doing for half the time, I don't know where I'm going
I think I'll get me a sailing boat and sail the Gulf of Mexico
But that's another side of this life I've been leading
And that's another side of this life

Well I think I'll go to Nashville down in Tennesse
The ten cent life I've been leading here gonna be the death of me
But that's the other side of this life I've been leading
And that's another side to this life

Would you like to know a secret just between you and me
I don't know where I'm going next, I don't know who I'm gonna be
But that's the other side of this life I've been leading
But that's the other side of this life.

PODCAST

05.04.07 - Executive Producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers discuss the two-hour episode, "The Other Side of This Life" and talk about the trials the interns face in next week's episode, "Testing 1-2-3" (5/10/07).

This is the podcast, minus the spin-off talk:

The first thing we have to talk about, which I think is kind of funny and great, and then turns a little sad is poor Cristina and the Mom’s, and wedding dress hell! One of my favorite moments is her asking Callie to be the bridesmaid, and then standing behind the mother’s and mouthing, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry,’ while Callie is mouthing ‘I’m gonna kill you, I’m gonna kill you!’ It is one of my favorite moments between the two of them, that and also when Izzie discovers that Callie is going to be bridesmaid and says ‘You’re not feeling very bride-y’ and then discovering that in fact, Callie’s going to be a bridesmaid, and she’s going to be stuck with Callie all day. She sticks her foot in her mouth, chews her foot and swallows it! It is pretty great.

Also on that, the fact that Preston has to come to terms with his Mother. And also, worse than that, Cristina comes to the realization that she told him she didn’t want a traditional wedding, she’s been saying who she is all along, and he didn’t listen. He thought she wasn’t serious. And then instead of saying, ‘Well, I am serious, and this is who I am,’ what she does, and I think this is what is wrong with the relationship, is she says, ‘Well, what do you want?’ And he says, ‘I’m a traditional man, Cristina,’ and she gives in, which the Cristina that we knew a year ago would’ve never done! She is proving Colin right, because Colin said ‘You’re changing, you are becoming a different kind of woman.’ She is shaving off little pieces of her personality to make Burke more comfortable, which a lot of woman do. We are all guilty of that. It is my personal theory that if you are doing that, you should break up with your boyfriend and move on. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean that that is right. And also, Burke says it, because from Burke’s point of view when he talks to his Mother, he says ‘Look, I have pushed every single step of the way, I lead and she follows, and it has been working well.’ And he feels that they wouldn’t even be in a relationship if he hadn’t pushed a little bit. And clearly Cristina loves him, and loves being in a relationship with him. I don’t know if she so much needs pushing, except from his perspective, but he does feel that he has done right by them, that this is going correctly, in his ‘Burke world of logic.’ But I love that he says, ‘She will be happy… someday.’ That to me is such a telling moment, and he is so serious about it and so earnest, and he feels so bad. But also that last scene where…. ‘Are you happy, are you happy?’ and neither of them says it first, and then he finally says ‘Yeah,’ and she says ‘Yeah.’ Let’s give a shout-out to Miss Diahann Carroll who is absolutely fabulous, and is an astonishing actress, and it was wonderful to have her back.

I think, obviously there’s just this incredibly, emotionally wrenching thing – the death of fake Mommy, as I like to call her. Susan was…what I loved about this episode is there is this wonderful build. Its hiccups and it’s casual, and its one little thing gets worse, and one little thing gets worse, and it is a horrible, horrible domino effect until they are rushing her into surgery, and then Meredith has to come out and tell her Father that his wife is dead. One of my favorite performances ever by Jeff Perry, who plays Thatcher, is him realizing…it is also one of my favorite performances by Ellen Pompeo. And what I love is that Thatcher, who has always been this meek, sort of quiet person, you watch him, and he can never really look Meredith in the eye. But he managed at a couple of points in this episode to meet Meredith’s eyes. He is making an effort, and he feels like he is getting to know his daughter. He hugs her. Yeah, he hugs her in his stiff little way, and then ends up at a point where he is slapping his daughter across the face, which undoes every little inch they had gained, quite frankly. But also, it is so sad because you realize that really, for him, Susan was all he had. Susan was the glue that had been holding him together since the relationship with Ellis ended. And Susan was his conduit to the outside world, because he is so in his head, and bumbling, and sort of strange and introverted, and Susan was this person who made the world okay for him, in this very, very basic way. And it is just heartbreaking for him, but also that Meredith actually started to let this woman in, to the degree that she did. She started to let this woman in, and because of it, she also started to let her Father in. And now this woman who was the only link she had with her Father is dead. And her Father is lost to her in a way that she is not going to know even more until later. But it is just so sad, and what I really loved was that by the time you get to the end, you know, Meredith said to Derek ‘I want to be better, I want to let you in, and I want to do that,’ but her natural instinct is to go to the place of ‘leave me alone, I’m going to drink tequila, and protect myself as best I can with the veneer of everything’s fine.’

And what I love about it is that by the end of the day, I mean, Izzie’s had the moment with George, Alex has had that wonderful moment with Ava where she says, ‘What’s wrong with you, what happened to you that you can’t let anyone it?’ and he says ‘Maybe I don’t remember,’ which I love. Best delivery ever! And the three of them are sitting in that room, talking about crappy friends, and crappy family, and drinking tequila, as if they have each had just a little bit of a bad day, as opposed to a massively bad day. To me, the show always comes back to the friends, and the one thing I wanted you to feel was that Cristina is alone, and should be sitting there drinking with them, but she is isolated right now. And that, Meredith and Izzie and Alex are all isolated in their tequila haze, and that poor Derek is standing outside the window, which I just felt was so poignant, and, frankly, if you were wondering what is going to happen next, an interesting point for things to come.

And you are right, I hadn’t thought about it that way, but you are right about Cristina, because Cristina is there with Burke, and Burke is quietly drinking a glass of wine, by himself, and Cristina comes in and she is all snuggling into him, ‘Are you happy?’ and you are like, ‘oh, my god.’ I love the moment where she says, ‘The dress is too tight, and I can’t breathe but a wedding is just one day.’ Well, in a resonance for her, but also a resonance for Callie where a wedding is not just one day. It is not just one day, and the look on Callie’s face which is her world crumbling, and in her eyes ‘it’s not just one day.’ Yeah, she can feel…….or what George says to Burke in that initially funny section where George and Burke get pushed away by Bailey to go and have a conversation, and they end up talking about the nature of marriage. And George actually says, ‘I don’t believe in divorce, but also I didn’t really think about it.’ He admits it seemed like the right thing to do. It is the most revealing conversation for both of them on where they are in their relationships. ‘Can you love two people at the same time?’ And in Burke’s case, well, Burke said himself he’s hoping you can love one, he’s not talking about himself he’s talking about Cristina. So, it is sad, but I really understand both people’s perspective, which is part of the reason I like this show.

So Mark and Alex….Mark is pissed. He is confused, but he also trying to be a better man in the face of not being able to be a better man, and part of it is, he’s still blaming Alex for his own flaws. And yet he has this wonderful moment where he comes clean with Derek. And Derek has that great moment where he’s like, ‘that must have been so difficult for you.’ I love the look on his face, which is just wonderful.

So next week our episode is ‘Testing 1-2-3.’ It is one of the final two episodes of this season. It is a fine episode. The one thing I can tell you is that the interns take their interns test. We will be back next week to talk to you about ‘Testing 1-2-3.’ So, this is Shonda Rhimes, and Betsy Beers, and this is Grey’s Anatomy.

Grey's Anatomy - The Other Side of This Life - May 3, 2007
I. GREY'S ANATOMY
When I heard that Meredith was going to be experiencing another family death, my initial thought was Thatcher, but then I felt that it would be silly to kill off her father right after her mother. When her step mom Susan (Mare Winningham) showed up again at Seattle Grace, this time with perpetual hiccups she claimed were due to her acid reflux, I agreed with Meredith and Thatcher. I figured Susan was faking it as an excuse for Thatcher to spend needed quality time with his daughter. As Susan kept returning with worse symptoms, it was apparent she wasn't faking. The last time I mentioned Ellen Pompeo's awesome acting talent, it was when Meredith suddenly realized that her mother's Alzheimer's disease had kicked back in. Ellen gave another fabulous performance, the best scene being when Meredith had to tell Thatcher that Susan had died. Jeff Perry — attention Emmy voters — made this scene even more powerful when Thatcher slapped Meredith in a sort of knee-jerk reaction to losing his wife: "You told me she had the hiccups!" The slap was uncalled for, absolutely. But as a viewer, I somehow accepted it — estranged father to daughter under major stress receiving horribly tragic and unbelievably shocking news — and you could tell Meredith somehow accepted it as well.
Comic relief throughout the two hours was certainly Cristina and her sudden new best bud Callie. Funniest moment was perhaps Callie giving Cristina, Izzie and Meredith her rules as a bridesmaid: "I will not be wearing pink or baby blue. I do not do flowers in my hair. And I will never be seen with a bow on my ass, OK?" Sounded exactly like something Cristina would say, so Callie being asked to join Cristina's bridal party turned out to be not as absurd as it first seemed. You knew Izzie wasn't going to be thrilled, even though she showed a rare chipper side earlier, literally cheering about Cristina's wedding.
It was nice to see TV legend Diahann Carroll back as Burke's mother Jane, as well as Tsai Chin as Mrs. Yang, but I would've preferred a few more mama scenes like the one when Burke declared to Jane: "'I trust you' is code for 'learn from your mistakes'!" At least "traditional man" Burke was honest with Cristina, confessing to preferring a big wedding over a city hall ceremony.
I am liking where the Ava/Jane Doe story seems to be going. You can tell Alex keeps getting more and more smitten with her. That surgery scene was quite fascinating when Derek kept causing her to speak in multiple languages. Too bad she couldn't remember any of it. Pretty soon she'll figure out the big reason why Alex didn't fall for Addison — he's falling for Ava. Another heads up to Emmy committee members — two words: Elizabeth Reaser.
The brief kiss between Izzie and "I'm not a cheater" George on the (of course) elevator bothered me, but I was happy it wasn't one of those mad, passionate kisses (I'll get to one of those a bit later). The "we can't" followed by the "I know" just had to immediately be followed by the elevator door opening up — poof — there's Callie. Please. But hey — at least she didn't see the kiss. All hell is going to break loose when Callie does find out, but having her witness Frick and Frack kissing on the elevator would've annoyed me to no end.
I enjoyed the several awkward male bonding scenes involving two pairs of dudes who don't normally bond: Mark and Derek, and then Burke and George. How ironic for Mark to mope to Derek about how much it sucked to have to discover Addison was sleeping with someone else. Derek: "Must've been so hard for you." I was glad Mark was able to fess up to Derek about lying to Addison regarding breaking their no-sex bet. Then, per Bailey's insistence, Burke asked George for marriage advice. That's like asking Cristina for congeniality advice. Best lines were George: "Is it possible to love two people at the same time?" Burke: "I'm still hoping it's possible just to love one person." Back to Mark Sloan. I was surprised he admitted to Alex that he knew about the Alex/Addison pairing and "whatever you didn't do" was why Addison took her leave of absence.

Why Grey's Anatomy's fans hate the spin-off - May 7th 2007
The Grey's Anatomy boards and blogs, and even some of our articles here at TV Squad, have been experiencing a surge in negative comments and posts. Those comments are directed at solely one thing: the potential spin-off featuring the character of Addison. Why are fans so unhappy with the end result? Will fan comments have ABC not pick up Private Practice? Let's analyze a few of the negative comments left by the TV Squad visitors in our "Grey's Anatomy Vs. the spin-off - Part 2" post. .... ABC's 'Anatomy' widens - Posted: Sun., May 6, 2007, 2:06pm PT
Two-hour episoA "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff is looking like a sure thing after Thursday's two-hour episode of the ABC medical drama -- introducing characters from the forthcoming show -- delivered impressive ratings.

The Alphabet won't announce its fall sked until next week, but it would be a shock if the still-untitled spinoff (known in some circles as "Private Practice") doesn't make it to air.

On Thursday, "Grey's Anatomy" averaged a 9.1 rating/24 share in adults 18-49 and 21.23 million viewers overall from 9-11 p.m. with an episode that alternated between current storylines on the medical skein and those involving Kate Walsh, whose character, Addison, traveled down to Los Angeles to meet up with med school friends. Walsh will be joined on the spinoff by, among others, Taye Diggs, Tim Daly and Amy Brenneman.de brings in big ratings ... (link below for article )

Grey's red-headed stepchild - May 4, 2007 5:16:19 PM
How could a show so good spawn something so bad?ABC’s Thursday-night medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is due to have a baby in the form of a spin-off — tentatively, its name is Private Practice. Last night, the network performed a virtual primetime Cesarean section, carefully pulling the spin-off from the womb of a hit. The special two-hour procedure was a backdoor pilot. But, because of high Nielson Rankings, and Golden Globes and Emmys, any child of Grey’s will likely be given a permanent home by the network, on the network — no matter what. The show — of which even Bill Clinton is a huge fan, according to Hollywood Insider — is just too successful for a spin-off to be stopped..... (link below for article )

'Grey's' obsessives are in on the spin - May 4, 2007
For a long time now, "Grey's Anatomy" has positioned itself as an inside joke -- developed its own lexicon of McThises and McThats, trafficked in the assumption that its viewers are as wedded to the show as its creators.
It's hard to blame the producers, really. Each week, on the blog the show's writers keep, hundreds of fans -- most of them women -- offer testimonials about how the plotlines have kept them from eating or sleeping, or caused them to shed various degrees of tears. .... (link below for article )

Grey's Anatomy Fans Shred Spin Off - May 4, 2007
Despite being embedded in a typically well performing episode of Grey’s Anatomy, the proposed pilot of the Addison led spin off “Private Practice” was almost universally panned by critics and fans alike. A quick tour through the Grey’s Anatomy fan sites this morning was like stepping onto a battlefield, with the anti-Private Practice troops possessing superior firepower. On a personal note, I liked the segments but felt they clashed with a-typical motifs of Grey’s Anatomy. .... (link below for complete article )

Spin-Off Doctors - May 04, 2007
On ''Grey's Anatomy,'' Kate Walsh's proposed new series is dead on arrival; meanwhile, the original cast kills Meredith's stepmother ---I'm trying to think of something pleasant to say about last night's two-hour Grey's Anatomy, and...I'm still thinking. Okay, there's Bailey. As always, there's Bailey. As underutilized as ever, she essentially had one scene. And it was good. Mopey O'Malley was eating his own organs up over Izzie again this week, and at the clinic he came right out and asked Bailey if she ever had any doubts about her marriage....... Zap2it - From Inside the Box - May 03, 09:21 PM
You spin me right round, 'Anatomy' - Shonda Rhimes really must want her Grey's Anatomy spinoff to go next year, because Meredith and Derek, George and Izzie and Callie, Burke and Cristina's wedding, Ava and Karev, even an unnecessarily close-to-home death for one of our docs -- that was all on the back burner this week....... Grey's Anatomy: The Other Side of This Life - Posted May 4th 2007
Well that's it. We speculated. We ooed and ahhed. We wondered what could possibly be in store for a Grey's Anatomy spin-off starring Kate Walsh's Addison Montgomery. Well now we know and based on my initial diagnosis (doctor lingo!), I have to be honest -- it feels a lot like the exact same show in a different city with different players. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so because we've got a formula that works here. Did I like it? Sure....... (link below for complete article )

Addison's New Adventure - April 26th, 2007
When it comes to tinkering with a television cast, storyline or timeslot, we all know it's always best to leave well enough alone.
But Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is testing her luck. It worked last year when Grey's was moved from Sunday to Thursday night. But now, even though the show is the No. 1 drama on television, drawing an average of 26 million viewers, Rhimes is not content to revel in her success.
Instead, she's been cooking up a spin-off show revolving around the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd (Kate Walsh), who leaves Seattle Grace for a job in California....... (link below for complete article )

Taye Diggs had to Choose Between Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy - April 25, 2007
Taye Diggs’ value to ABC was definitely not diminished by the ugly flop of Day Break earlier this season. The time looping mystery, which stood in for LOST while it was on hiatus number two, failed to resonate with LOST fans and Day Break was quickly pulled from the air, despite Diggs’ noteworthy portrayal of the lead. While that must have been a disappointment for Diggs, and the Network, his talent prevailed and the ousted actor found himself with his choice of top ABC shows. The first option come Diggs’ way was a stint on Ugly Betty. If he had accepted the job, he would have appeared for a limited number of ‘Betty’ episodes in a guest starring capacity. Apparently, for a short time it looked like Diggs was on board, and then along came Grey’s Anatomy. ....... (link below for complete article )
