About Grey’s Anatomy
The doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital deal with life-or-death consequences on a daily basis – it’s in one another that they find comfort, friendship and, at times, more than friendship. Together they’re discovering that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey.

“Grey’s Anatomy” was created and is executive- produced by Shonda Rhimes (“Introducing Dorothy Dandridge”). Betsy Beers (“Casanova”), Mark Gordon (“Saving Private Ryan”), Krista Vernoff (“Law & Order”), Rob Corn (“Chicago Hope”) and Mark Wilding (“Jake: 2.0”) are executive producers. “Grey’s Anatomy” is an ABC Studios production.

MEDICAL STORIES

SIDES SUMMARIES

Sides for 4:16

There are three cases that the sides detail.

The first one is about two teenagers, Beth and Jeremy, who both have a brain tumor. They are deeply in love with each other. They both met at a support group and they are both at SGH for the clinical trial that meredith and derek are doing.

Dr. Chin, Meredith ( I am assuming) is in a room with Beth, combing her hair and doing her make up. Beth insinuates that she wants to have sex with Jeremy and asks Meredith if she can get them alone. She then, nervously asks Meredith if she has ever had sex and whether it is amazing and magical as she has come to belive. Meredith says that it can be if it is with the right person.

Meredith then walks into beth's room after her and Jeremy have had sex. Both Beth and Jeremy are glowing. Meredith tells them that it is time to take Jeremy to the OR for surgery. Beth and Jeremy share an intimate kiss then Beth starts to freak out questioning whether one if them dies. She tells Jeremy that he has changed her life, made her a better person, bright and shinier and that if she does die she will die knowing what love is. Jeremy then tells her that she is not going to die and that if he dies he wants her to keep on loving life

Meredith and Derek ( Dr. Hall) are inthe hallway with Beth's parents. They are worried about Beth and worried how close she is with Jeremy. They say that they do not want her to get so attached to someone who might die ( Derek also says this). Meredith then claims that they love eachother. Beth's parents then claim that they don't want their daughter to be devestated if he does die and that they want her to want to live.

The next case is about two boys who dared eachother to jump into a pool off a two story house. One of the boy's is badly injured and the other boy ( the one who dared him ) doesnt seem to think it is his fault.

The next case is the same script from the tumor boy in season 2. the one where mark comes and operated on him but he ultimately dies. I think they are probably casting for a similar character.

The boy Jeremy does end up dying in the end.

SPOILERS

Patrick Dempsey Drops Major Spoiler for Season Finale – May 17, 2008
Attention all MerDer fans! In an interview with AOL, Patrick Dempsey himself dropped a major spoiler for the MerDer relationship in the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy.
If you don’t want to know, stop reading now!

**

Here’s the full quote from McDreamy: “I have like a rainbow colour of pages in front of me that I’m trying to put together in my script, and I just got to the final scene. And it’s a beautiful scene where (my character and Meredith) get back together. It’s really quite something. It’s unexpected, I think, the way it plays itself out. It kind of gets back to the essence of what made this show so great.”
It’s looking like that major and “unexpected” kiss we’ve all been speculating about might turn out to be Meredith and Derek after all! Of course, as many of you pointed out, a MerDer kiss is anything but unexpected so perhaps Patrick Dempsey is just trying to distract us from the real major kiss of the episode. I think someone suggested George and Bailey? Hey, George did say they were in love and headed to Vegas. Why not! ;)
Now then, does this change your minds about the major kiss or are you convinced it’s going to be someone other than Meredith and Derek?

From Kristin at the Upfronts, from her interview with Stephen MacPherson:

Grey's Anatomy Is Planning Something Big: "Grey's has got a big idea for next year that Shonda's getting ready to launch on people," says McPherson, but wouldn't go into further detail (shocker). "But the other shows we feel like are firing on really good waves so there's no big kind of shift." (Read into that transition what you will.)

Question: Seems like Grey's Anatomy is heading on the right track to greatness again! Any spoilers to confirm this? — Al Ausiello: Yes indeed. I just found out which two characters will be performing the "major kiss" in the season finale and trust me when I say you will not be disappointed.

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS

Freedom '90
George Michael

I won't let you down
I will not give you up
Gotta have some faith in the sound
It's the one good thing that I've got
I won't let you down
So please don't give me up
Because I would really, really love to stick around

Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn't know what I wanted to be
I was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me
To win the race? A prettier face!
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll TV
But today the way I play the game is not the same
No way
Think I'm gonna get me some happy

I think there's something you should know
I think it's time I told you so
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone else I've got to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Take back your singing in the rain
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take

Heaven knows we sure had some fun boy
What a kick just a buddy and me
We had every big shot good-time band on the run boy
We were living in a fantasy
We won the race
Got out of the place
I went back home got a brand new face
For the boys on MTV
But today the way I play the game has got to change
Oh yeah
Now I'm gonna get myself happy

I think there's something you should know
I think it's time I stopped the show
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don't think that I'll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take
Freedom
You've gotta give for what you take

Well it looks like the road to heaven
But it feels like the road to hell
When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well
Posing for another picture
Everybody's got to sell
But when you shake your ass
They notice fast
And some mistakes were built to last

That's what you get

I say that's what you get

That's what you get for changing your mind

And after all this time
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes
Do not make the man

I'll hold on to my freedom
May not be what you want from me
Just the way it's got to be
Lose the face now
I've got to live

Grey's Anatomy: "Freedom" Season 4 Finale Recap - Thursday, May 22, 2008
On tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith continued her therapy as she tried to come to terms with her mom's attempted suicide during her childhood. Cristina got her mojo back, courtesy of a sparkle pager. Alex disregarded all rationale in his attempt to care for Rebecca. George received a lot more information than he bargained for, courtesy of Lexie's photographic memory. The staff at Seattle Grace came together to save a patient stuck in a very interesting position. Derek and Meredith worked side by side on the last two patients in their clinical trial...................cont¡¦d

'Grey's Anatomy': Shonda Rhimes on her plans for Erica and Callie - May 23, 2008
For Grey¡¦s Anatomy fans who began the season wondering whether Dr. ÈÎErica Hahn (Brooke Smith) was gay, the May 22 season finale finally offered an answer ¡X she might just be, now that Callie (Sara Ramirez) made her move. The two-hour episode ¡X which culminated with Callie planting a big ol' buss on Erica outside of Seattle Grace ¡X had us asking: For the love of The L Word, could Eri-Cal eclipse Meredith and Derek as Grey's It Couple? Creator Shonda Rhimes hints that we may not have seen the last of this budding romance. ¡§Callie and Erica have an undeniable chemistry,¡¨ says Rhimes. ¡§And watching the story unfold is something the writers are looking forward to. I wanted to illuminate their relationship in the same way we do all relationships on the show ¡X it will be ÈÎfunny, sweet, honest, and a little bit dirty.¡¨..........cont¡¦d

EW - TV Watch
'Grey's Anatomy': Concrete Results
On the season finale, the surgeons operate on a kid encased in cement and get turned on, while Meredith saves a cancer girl, has a breakthrough in therapy, and opens up to Derek
Conclusion: I need more surgery in my life. As far as aphrodisiacs go, the stuff is clearly more potent than tequila, wine, bubble baths, candles, snowstorms, down comforters, Before Sunset, and the Juno soundtrack. Combined. I know a lot of people make out on this show, but the ending of tonight's two episodes of Grey's Anatomy may have set some kind of record. The kind where everyone but Yang and Sloan (and Bailey, natch) is sucking face with someone. And I wouldn't be surprised if those two found each other later in the night for a quickie. I mean, why not?...........cont¡¦d

Episode Recap: Freedom
Over an hour into tonight¡¦s two hour finale, it hit me¡Kwe needed some humor to lighten up this very dark episode. Nothing seemed to be going right. Meredith and Derek were at each other¡¦s throats over the latest loss in their clinical trial; Rebecca kept getting worse and was in need of serious medical attention (but Alex was in serious denial), and the man in cement seemed to be doomed (among other things).

So, is it wrong that when Cristina snapped at Erica in the OR, I almost cheered? For the first time something seemed to be going right---Cristina was in the zone and finally standing up for herself. The only thing better than that was the look of shock on Erica¡¦s face when the Chief agreed Hahn needed to back off and let Cristina do her thing. I take that back, the best moment came later, when the Chief confronted Hahn after the operation and told her she needed to handle the residents better, ¡§You need to learn how to teach, without crushing their spirits. You need to be a better teacher.¡¨ Not only is Hahn now on the hook, but Cristina overheard the whole thing. Finally, Cristina is getting her groove back!...............cont¡¦d

Grey's Anatomy: Freedom (season finale) - Posted May 23rd 2008
"The pager is sacred. Sacred sparkle." -- Izzie
A sparkly pager, some quick-drying cement, and a field of candles all play into tonight's 2-hour episode -- the Season Four finale of Grey's Anatomy. Has it really been only four seasons? Because it seems like so much more.

Anyway, tonight we learn a little more about some of the interns' history. For one thing, via a therapy session (and why can't I have Amy Madigan as my therapist?), we learn that young Meredith saw her mom slit her wrists, then had to wait for her to pass out before calling 911.

Meredith says her mom wanted to die, but by the end of the episode, she figures out that she really didn't want to die. Being a brilliant surgeon, her mom would have known the faster road to death entailed slitting her carotid artery.........cont¡¦d

Finalewatch: 'Grey's Anatomy' -- Ask and Ye Shall Receive - May 22, 09:39 PM
I need some help. Because I just got done watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy where lots of people had happy endings, and I think I may have stumbled into a parallel universe.
Before I go any further I want to say thanks to Liz Pardue for doing such a great job last week. With a two-hour finale there's no way I can be as concise as she was -- so hang on to your hats.
There were a lot of moving parts on tonight's Seattle Grace-athon; definitely some more throwaway than others. But even if they did tie up maybe just a little too neatly in the end -- destiny, old ghosts affecting your present life and being brave enough to ask for (even demand) what you want were huge themes -- this was a far more coherent episode than, well, many, and it felt like each character was coming into his or her own in a way they haven't since the first season. Heck, partly because of the script and partly because Katherine Heigl was so spot-on, I'm even retiring the Izzie Annoying Scale...cont¡¦d

ABC wins night despite drop in 'Grey's' ratings - May 16, 2008
NEW YORK -- Broadcast TV's ratings hangover continued Thursday night, with heavyweights "Grey's Anatomy" matching an all-time ratings low for an original in adults 18-49 and "CSI" coming close but not matching its all-time low.
Nielsen Media Research's preliminary estimates released earlier Friday presented a darker picture, with lows for both shows, although the revised numbers released later in the day brightened a bit.

But that's not to say that it was completely cheery.
"Grey's Anatomy" (15.5 million, 6.1 rating/15 share) matched its Thursday record low in the demo. "CSI" (18.1 million, 4.9/12) was two-tenths of a rating point ahead of its record low for an original. Coming behind them in the hour was the season finale of "The Office" (8.2 million, 4.2/10) as well as Fox's "Don't Forget The Lyrics" (6.6 million, 2.3/6).
"Lost" (11 million, 4.9/13) matched last week's low. CBS's "Without a Trace" (14.5 million, 3.6/10) wasn't affected by the ratings dip of "CSI." NBC's "ER" season finale (8.4 million, 3.3/9) was also about even.

NBC won the 8 p.m. hour with the season finale of "My Name is Earl" (7.2 million, 3.0/9), while ABC's "Ugly Betty" (8.5 million, 2.7/8) won in viewership just barely over Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" (8.4 million, 2.2/7). A repeat "CSI" (7.6 million, 1.7/5) came in tied in the demo with The CW's "Smallville" (3.8 million, 1.7/5).

For the night, ABC (11.7 million, 4.6/12) won in adults 18-49 and CBS (13.4 million, 3.4/9) won in viewership over NBC (7.9 million, 3.5/9), Fox (7.5 million, 2.3/6) and The CW (3.4 million, 1.5/4).
The back half of a "CSI"-"Two and a Half Men" writer crossover scored an 11.2/17 for CBS at 9 p.m. "Grey's Anatomy," 10.4/16, improved a touch over last week and kept ABC in second. There was a big drop to third-place NBC, which featured "The Office," 4.7/7, and the season finale of "30 Rock," 3.6/6. "Don't Forget the Lyrics," 3.9/6, was fourth for FOX. "Supernatural" finished the night for The CW.
"Without a Trace" posted a 9.7/16 -- up substantially from last week -- for CBS at 10 p.m. "Lost," 7.0/12, held onto second for ABC. "ER" drew a 5.3/9 for NBC.

Review: 'Grey's Anatomy' season finale - May 21, 2008
Reason to watch: This is the end, or, should we say the end - a big, meaty, two-hour wrap that promises to resolve that Mer/Der thing, and maybe - OK, almost certainly - tell us more about that Hahn/Torres thing, too.

What to expect: ABC and even the normally loquacious creator Shonda Rhimes, who every year around this time likes to spill to Entertainment Weekly, her own personal house organ, have been circumspect on finale plot details..............cont’d

Grey Matter

The End of the Beginning...
Original Airdate: 5-22-08

So that was Season Four.

Right after we finished filming the finale of Season Three, I sat down with the Grey¡¦s writing staff and I pitched them the last scene of Season Four. That¡¦s how I do it. I start at the end. When Season Two concluded, I pitched the image of Cristina tearing off her wedding dress and crying in Meredith¡¦s arms. For this season, I knew immediately that I wanted more hope. I knew I personally NEEDED more hope. So I pitched Meredith standing on Derek¡¦s land in a field of candles telling Derek where the living room could be, where the kitchen could be, where the kids could play. Because I wanted them together. I hated them being apart. It made me sad. It made me sad in a way that was bad for me and for everyone around me.

But I also knew that, in order for Meredith to stand in that field of candles, she had to get there. Inside. Now I¡¦m not an oogey inside person. I don¡¦t do warm and fuzzy and I certainly don¡¦t believe in therapy. For other people, it¡¦s fine (yay, therapy!). For me, not so much. I write ¡V that¡¦s how I deal with my insides. And Meredith, she performs surgery ¡V that¡¦s how she deals with hers.

But in order to get her to a place where she could stand in that field of candles, Mer needed a little help. Professional help. Which shocked my writers. Cause they know how I feel about therapy. But I knew something they did not. Something I¡¦d been keeping to myself for four seasons. Which was the fact that Meredith sat on the kitchen floor in a pool of her mother¡¦s blood after her mother attempted suicide. See what I mean about me not being warm and fuzzy? Nothing warm and fuzzy about pools of blood. Which is why I kept that detail to myself. When you say things like that in a writers¡¦ room, people tend to look at you funny. People tend to suggest that YOU need therapy. So I kept it to myself. For four long seasons. I didn¡¦t even tell Debora Cahn, the writer of the episode in which Meredith CONFESSES her mother¡¦s suicide to Dr. Wyatt. Not until the last possible second.

We¡¦d have these discussions about Deb Cahn¡¦s episode in the writers¡¦ room where everyone would ask ¡§Shonda, what is Meredith going to TELL Dr. Wyatt in this last scene? WHAT?¡¨ And I¡¦d be all, ¡§I don¡¦t know. Stop talking about it.¡¨ And they¡¦d sigh and shoot each other these looks. They love me but still, there were looks.

I¡¦d like to point out that it is RUDE not to tell details like that to your writing staff. It is cold and withholding, to use therapy-speak. But I just couldn¡¦t do it. Because of two things: one, while I had pitched Meredith all whole and healed in a field of candles, I wasn¡¦t sure I could get to a place where I BELIEVED that Meredith would ever go to the field. And two, I love Ellis Grey. Love her. Even though she is dead. I think she is fantastic. And I couldn¡¦t figure out, couldn¡¦t fathom, what a mother says to her child when she is bleeding to death on the kitchen floor from self-inflicted wounds. For a long time, I felt like anything she would have said to a five year old kid in that moment would make her a monster. Because I have a five year old kid. And I can¡¦t imagine doing something so horrible and damaging to her. What do you say to your child at a time like that? Why is your child even there? How do you redeem yourself in that horrifying moment?

And then I realized: be extraordinary. Be an extraordinary woman, Meredith. If you¡¦ll remember, in Season Three when Ellis was lucid, she tells Meredith, ¡§I raised you to be an extraordinary woman, Meredith and imagine my disappointment at realizing you are no more than ordinary.¡¨ That¡¦s what she says in the episode RIGHT BEFORE Meredith falls in the water and chooses to stop swimming. To let herself go. That was Meredith¡¦s own pool of blood.

So suddenly, I had my answer. Ellis would lie there in her blood and tell Meredith to be an extraordinary woman. To not depend on anyone. And she wouldn¡¦t be talking about surgery. But Meredith, at five years old, could not possibly know that. And she¡¦d become the surgeon in training who screws boys like a whore on tequila and then tries to drown herself. Instead of realizing what Ellis actually meant -- don¡¦t have ordinary love. Have extraordinary love. And that made it all possible. It made it possible for Mer to stand in a field of candles because once she realizes that, her whole world opens up. She can just stand there in her joy.

But like I said, I don¡¦t do warm and fuzzy. So that last scene, it was hard for me. To let her be oogey on the inside. So instead, Meredith is screaming and pacing and cursing like a fishwife. Because that¡¦s how we do things at Grey¡¦s. She¡¦s going to love Derek and be with Derek but she¡¦s going to go in kicking and screaming. And then I really didn¡¦t want to just end with the two of them kissing. Everyone said, ¡§end with the kiss, end with the kiss, end with THE KISS.¡¨ And I was all stubborn about it. Because this episode, it¡¦s not about the kiss. It¡¦s about the moment AFTER the kiss. It¡¦s about the moment when she¡¦s standing in the field of candles alone having just DONE the thing she was most scared of doing. She is free. She is free. And you¡¦ll notice, there¡¦s no voice over there, no Meredith telling us anything. Because, for once, my girl Meredith is speechless.

There were other kisses in the episode. Maybe you noticed? Callie and Erica. Callie and Erica!! My god, did we discuss this a lot around here. Because Callie kisses a girl. We had this really cool meeting with GLAAD where we talked about the idea that a woman could decide she had feelings for another woman after being perfectly happy with men and we all got joyous because the chemistry between Callie and Erica and Mark is hot and interesting and fresh and like nothing any of us had seen on TV before. And we wanted it to be real ¡V not some stunt to get people talking. We wanted to see what would happen if a woman suddenly had feelings for another woman. Because that has got to be surprising. And it is for Callie who so likes men. Who so likes sleeping with men. You¡¦ll be very surprised when you find out where this story is heading next season. Because we don¡¦t do things the easy way. And none of this will be easy. Not for Callie. Not for Erica. And not for Mark Sloan¡K

How much do I love Mark Sloan? He¡¦s a dirty pretty manwhore who ends up being a hero. And I love him for it. Not that he¡¦s going to become a good guy. He¡¦s no white hat. But for one moment, he did what he thought was the right thing. Because if there¡¦s one thing he understands, it¡¦s getting turned on by someone. And who is he to deny that?

Okay, there is more to say. I have more to say. About George and Lexie. About Alex and Ava/Rebecca and Izzie. About Bailey. About the Chief. About Rose. And about Cristina. Oh, do I have more to say.

But my fingers are tired. From writing all the kissing. So I¡¦m going to end this now and post it. But I will write more tomorrow. I¡¦ll finish what I started. But right now, I¡¦ve got to head into the writers¡¦ room and pitch them the end of Season Five¡K

Thank you so much for watching the show. Every single time you watch an episode, we are grateful. You are all extraordinary.

The Emerald City Bar

It's About Time

When Mark Sloan comes into the bar and orders a water, you know something went down at Seattle Grace!

So he says he¡¦s growing and this whole swearing off alcohol thing is part of some ¡§new leaf¡¨ or whatever, but I¡¦m not buying it. Mark Sloan does shots. He goes home with nurses. He talks about threesomes and nakedness and things he wants to do with fingers. The dude once tried to get me to create a hot-or-not website that ranked the entire female staff of Seattle Grace! (I opted to create this blog, instead).

Mark Sloan does not order water. He does not strike up conversations about Buddhism and spiritual journeys and the ways of the noble messengers of yesterday. And, Mark Sloan most certainly does not go home alone. So the question remains¡K WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED AT SEATTLE GRACE??!!

Well, first of all, some kid supposedly tried to impress a girl by laying down in a bunch of drying concrete. Dude, seriously? Whatever happened to simply etching a pair of initials on the sidewalk and drawing a big heart around it? I guess this kid really wanted to get creative. Talk about good times! It practically took the entire staff to free the poor guy from his new deadly cement jail. Fortunately, thanks mostly to Bailey, the genius actually survived.

Of course, according to Mark, cement boy wasn¡¦t the only big thing to happen over at the hospital today. Many, many other things went down. Things like¡K Callie and Erica making out in front of Seattle Grace, for everyone to see!

Yep, apparently Callie and Erica (finally) faced their true feelings for one another. Which, obviously, I think is absolutely wonderful. And, Mark agrees. However, as he was telling me the story, explaining how Callie literally grabbed Erica¡¦s face and planted one on her with all the passion and longing in the world, I couldn¡¦t help but sense that Mark was just a teeny, tiny, wee bit jealous.

No, Mark wasn¡¦t jealous because he wanted to join in. He was jealous because he saw two people having the courage to act upon their true feelings and not give a damn about what anyone else thinks. Mark, I could tell, wants something like that. Mark wants to find someone who can¡¦t stop thinking about him all day. Yes, Mark wants to be in love. Aw, poor McSteamy. It¡¦s about time he found some true love, don¡¦t you think?

It¡¦s also about time Ava/Rebecca/Jane Doe got some professional help. Before going home for the night, Lexie stopped by for a cocktail. She told me all about Ava, or Rebecca, I mean Jane Doe (seriously, what do I call her), and her apparent SUICIDE attempt. After that happened, I guess Izzie was finally able to convince Alex to hand Ava (I¡¦m sticking with that one because it¡¦s the shortest) over to the psych ward. My man Alex was not happy about it, but he knew ¡V in his heart ¡V that it was probably for the best.

Lexie said Alex was in his dark place when he left the hospital tonight. He must¡¦ve been, because he didn¡¦t even bother to stop by the bar. Uh-oh. I hope he went home and got some rest. Hopefully, Izzie will be a good friend and make sure Alex is okay after this whole mess. I¡¦m sure she will¡K

Speaking of good friends, Lexie and George? They are the best. I get the feeling that they really look out for each other. Take, for instance, the fact that Lexie actually broke into the Chief¡¦s office and STOLE a bunch of personnel files. And, she did it all for George. She evidently discovered a whole bunch of personal (i.e. blackmail-worthy) information about ALL of our favorite docs. Information I cannot repeat here on this blog. But, information I can tell you in person, if you¡¦re ever in the neighborhood.

Let¡¦s just say that George shouldn¡¦t have to be an intern for much longer. Way back when, on Intern Test Day, George came totally close ¡V I mean, super close, like one-point close ¡V to making it to the next level and becoming a resident. Fine ¡V I¡¦ll just say it ¡V George failed his intern test by ONE POINT. That¡¦s it! Both Lexie and I hope there¡¦s some way he can retake the exam¡K Somewhere¡K Somehow¡K

Lexie didn¡¦t stay for too long ¡V she had to get home and clean up the apartment before George got there. See what I mean? A good friend! Later, however, Cristina came in ¡V as happy and pleasant as could be. Talk about something big going down¡K

Cristina was exuberant tonight. Wow, I never would¡¦ve thought that those words could ever appear in the same sentence. Anyhoo, come to find out, the Chief backed Cristina up during surgery IN FRONT OF HAHN today. Now, that¡¦s big, folks.

Richard told Hahn that she had to teach Cristina. It was her job, and Hahn wasn¡¦t doing it well. Of course, this came after Cristina did some awesome cardio on good ole¡¦ cement boy without Hahn¡¦s help. Good for Yang! About time she got the save!

I asked Yang about her cohort, Meredith. Where was she? Apparently, that was the question of the night. Derek had been searching the hospital for Mer earlier, but to no avail. Wait a sec, did Mer¡¦s disappearance have anything to do with all those candles I saw her carrying just moments earlier?

Cristina had no idea what I was talking about. Candles, I said! Lots and lots of candles in lots and lots of little glasses! I was grabbing a jacket out of my car when I saw Meredith loading them all up in her car. Cristina shrugged¡K She was clueless. She knew that Meredith made medical history today with Derek, but Cristina didn¡¦t know anything about candles.

So Meredith and Derek successfully completed their clinical trial?! They cured a patient¡¦s brain tumor?! They¡¦re popping open that bottle of champagne?!

It was then when Cristina shrugged and accused me of trying to take away ¡§her moment,¡¨ but I simply waved her off. I was just so happy for Meredith! And I was even happier when I saw Nurse Rose in a corner of the bar¡K without Derek!

Do you know what that means? DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?! It MEANS Derek was with Meredith! It MEANS Derek and Meredith could (should) be reuniting (making out) as I type these very words! It MEANS Nurse Rose¡¦s reign is about to come to a sad, sad end. And, for that, I just have to say: IT¡¦S ABOUT DAMN TIME!

SYNOPSIS

05/22/2008 - "Freedom"
Season 4, Episode 416

Meredith's attempts to cheer up Cristina all fail, so she hands her the sparkly pager, which instantly perks her up as she gets her surgery mojo back.

Derek decides to sell the land on which he'd planned to build a house. Rose tells Meredith about it, saying she knows Derek's doing it because he's lost Meredith, and that the "legend" of Derek and Meredith intimidates her.

Meredith tells Dr. Wyatt that her mother slit her wrists in front of her when she was a child -- and she had to wait until she passed out to call 911.

Callie and Mark are still hot and heavy, only now Mark likes to spice things up by talking dirty about what they'd also be doing with Erica if she were here.

Miranda is told that she needs to spend 15 more hours a week in surgery to sit for her board exams.

A major trauma case comes in that no one knows how to handle: A teenager named Andrew was dared to lay in a bed of quick-drying cement and is now encased in solid layers of the stuff. None of the surgeons can agree on the right way to proceed. Richard orders them to get started because the patient's already been stuck in cement for 4 hours and they'll have only 20 yet before he dies.

Construction workers chip away at the cement as Andrew confesses he did it to impress a girl, but that not only has he not impressed her, but now she'll always remember him as the idiot who died in a block of concrete. The team has to work fast, not just to free him from the concrete, but to stop his organs from shutting down and his leg from swelling dangerously. The O.R. is booked but Miranda realizes they've been giving him water for four hours and his bladder is likely to explode unless they put in a catheter immediately.

Derek and Meredith next two clinical trial patients are two tumor-ridden teens in love, Beth and Jeremy. Her parents oppose the match because they're worried if he dies, Beth won't want to live either. Beth is trying to get her mother to leave her alone with Jeremy when he starts seizing violently.

Richard tells Meredith that since they've had 11 deaths with their clinical trial, the board will be shutting them down at midnight tonight: They have one last chance to save a life. Jeremy is already scheduled and Meredith wants to also get Beth in before the deadline. Beth is determined to get to Jeremy before his surgery, although she can barely walk. Meredith and Derek find her and she asks if she can be alone with Jeremy -- as neither of them have ever had sex. They stand watch outside the door as Jeremy and Beth sleep together for the first time.

It's time for Jeremy's surgery. He won't be conscious before Beth goes in for her operation, so they say their goodbyes, and promise that neither one of the will die. "Do not kill him," she tells Derek as they wheel Jeremy away, but Jeremy dies. Beth is devastated, as are her parents, who were hoping for a miracle for their daughter. Beth's parents want to take her home, but she insists on having the surgery today, saying Jeremy would be mad if she gave up.

George complains to Lexie that even though he's the chief's intern and has access to everyone's files, he has no power and no cases. She sneaks into the Chief's office and takes all the files and reads them, including George's. She tells him he failed the intern exam by one point.

Izzie is concerned about Rebecca's declining health and keeps calling Alex for updates. Alex tells Izzie that Rebecca's fine -- until he finds her in the kitchen with a bloodied knife.

------------- Freedom, Part 2

Andrew asks to see Lola, the girl he was trying to impress, who's goofing around with her friends in the waiting room. Once she's away from her jerky companions, Lola admits she does care about Andrew, but she cares more about what her friends think. "You're going to hate yourself for this," Callie tells her when Lola refuses to see Andrew.

They're about to remove the last bit of cement from Andrew, and Miranda tells him that once they do that, there's a chance that all the toxins will rush to his heart, but that they are ready to deal with that. He crashes and they rush him to surgery.

Derek is furious with Meredith for encouraging Beth to have the experimental surgery because he's convinced they'll kill her too. And when that happens, he says, he doesn't ever want to talk to or see Meredith again.

Dr. Wyatt tells Meredith her mother didn't intend to kill herself but won't explain further, trusting Meredith to reach the conclusion on her own.

George is discouraged, rather than encouraged, to realize he missed passing his exam by one point and tells Lexie that he'd rather not have known that. She points out he had more letters of recommendation than any one else and that she knows he's capable of greatness.

Rebecca has slit her wrists but Alex nixes a psych consult. Izzie says it's her call as Rebecca's her patient but Alex yells, "Will you leave us alone, you stupid bitch?" Izzie goes to Miranda -- who's in the middle of surgery on Andrew -- for advice, and she tells her she already knows what to do. Izzie fetches a psychiatrist and takes Alex aside while he talks to Rebecca. Alex swears he can take care of her, because he took care of his mother when she was going through a "bad patch," and that's all Rebecca is going through. Andrew flatlines during the surgery and Cristina suggests a controversial heart procedure that she did with Burke. Richard gives her the go-ahead and even overrules Erica when she walks in and tries to take over. He tells Erica that she needs to learn how to be a better teacher if she wants to stay at Seattle Grace. Cristina, meanwhile, is so happy after being able to operate again the she shows Lexie how to do a running stitch on a banana.

Derek is melancholy before the last clinical trial. He tells Rose he's not good enough and that he's "failed her" over and over again. She's sure he means Meredith, although she asks whether he meant to say, "them," meaning the patients.

Beth survives the surgery and Meredith offers to stay with her, but he tells her to go. She goes home to find Rebecca's blood all over the kitchen, which she cleans up, all by herself.

To the Chief's surprise, George has stayed all night to keep watch on Andrew. When Richard tells him, "Good job," George says it's not a good job for him, since they both know he's better than that and that he deserves a second chance, like Izzie and Meredith and Cristina have all gotten. Richard is convinced, and says he can retake the test.

Callie admits to Mark that she was turned on during the surgery, when they worked closely with Erica. He tells her that it's not his dirty talk about Erica that's turning her on, it's who he's been talking about.

Lola is still waiting at the hospital, but won't see Andrew since it would cost her the respect of her friends. She tells a disapproving Callie that she doesn't know how hard it would be if she let Andrew knew she liked him and Callie tells her it's better to be honest.

Alex goes to see Rebecca and tells her he called her husband, who told him that he'd taken the baby and left two months ago, and that she has a borderline personality disorder. He admits that he can't help her and that she'll have to be admitted.

Miranda tells Izzie she's handing over the running of the clinic to her, because she doesn't love it as much as she loves her job, being a surgeon and her husband and child. She tells Izzie that she's grown into a fine doctor, one who makes her proud.

Richard is angry with Meredith for telling Derek that she had the Chief's approval for a second surgery, when she didn't. Instead of apologizing, she tells him that her mother tried to kill herself after he left her, which he didn't know. And she realizes now why her mother didn't mean to kill herself -- as a skilled surgeon, she could have killed herself instantly by cutting her throat instead. Meredith also realizes that when her mother told her to "be extraordinary," she wasn't talking about surgery.

Lola not only comes to see Andrew, but she kisses him for the first time.

Meredith examines Beth's X-rays and sees that her tumor has shrunk -- the trial was a success! She asks Rose to tell Derek, but she says to tell himself. Rose congratulates Meredith on her medical breakthrough, saying, "It's the stuff of legends."
Derek finds Beth's parents sobbing -- he expects the worst but finds her alive and awake. In his frustration, Derek had earlier thrown out the celebratory body of champagne, but now he goes to retrieve it, and to find Meredith.

Meredith shows up at Derek's trailer but he's not there. Instead she finds Richard, who tells her he's not a bad man, even though he knows he's the villain in her story. He goes home to Adele and tells he's not asking her, he's telling her he's come home. "It's about time," she says.

Mark and Callie are leaving the hospital together when they see Erica. He urges her to go with her instead. Callie tries to talk to Erica, but instead just kisses her.

George tells Lexie that because of her, he's retaking his intern exam and kisses her in his enthusiasm.

Izzie tells a broken Alex she's sorry about Rebecca and he kisses her. She tries to tell him no, but he says, "Please, just for this one night."

Derek looks for Meredith everywhere and then finds her on his patch of land. She's set up candles to outline where their house will be. She keeps talking about how she's going to try to trust him and he shuts her up with a passionate kiss. He tells her before they go any farther, he needs to talk to Rose, and he asks her to stay and wait for him.
