Paging Addison: Kate Walsh is back on 'Grey's' - May 1, 2008

Monday, April 21, 2008
Patrick Dempsey enjoyed working with Kate Walsh again Patrick Dempsey has apparently revealed that a familiar face is set to return to the Grey's Anatomy fold. "Kate Walsh is going to be there for an episode - we just finished that last week," the actor revealed to Entertainment Tonight. "Kate will come in on the second, or the third episode. It was good having her back actually. It was like 'come on, come back to us! We miss you'." Kate left Grey's Anatomy to star in her own spin-off show Private Practice, which premiered last September.
Grey's is soon making its return onto US screens following its writers' strike hiatus. And Patrick revealed there will be five more Grey's Anatomy shows to finish the season. "Everybody's hustling to get the shows finished," he said. "They're funny. I think the medical stuff's really interesting, like what's going on with the character. But I never know what's going to happen which is good."

Kate Walsh on "Grey's Anatomy" (May 1) - Wednesday, April 16, 2008
You may have heard Kate Walsh, whose new medical series "Private Practice" won't be coming back before September, is making a guest appearance on the parent series "Grey's Anatomy" May 1. ABC has now released images of Dr. Addison Montgomery back at Seattle Grace, for one episode only.
The reason Addison returns to Seattle Grace is to perform a groundbreaking surgery. In the process, she meets all of her former co-workers, husbands and lovers, and is taken aback by all of the changes in their lives. Not that she didn't have a turbulent fall in her Santa Monica co-op herself.
The episode titled "Piece of My Heart" (2nd of 6 post-strike episodes) airs May 1. "Grey's Anatomy" returns next Thursday, April 24. The 2-hour season finale airs May 22.......

More details on Kate Walsh's return to 'Grey's Anatomy' - Apr 16, 2008
Those signature three-inch heels are back! Private Practice won’t be returning to ABC until the fall, but fans of Kate Walsh (a.k.a Dr. Addison Montgomery) can get a quick fix May 1 when the siren returns to Grey’s Anatomy “to explore the thought that you can never go home again,” teases executive producer Shonda Rhimes...................read on

Grey's Anatomy: Addison Returns to Seattle Grace Hospital - Friday, April 18, 2008
Private Practice won't be returning to ABC until the fall, but in the mean time, fans of Kate Walsh, popularly known as Dr. Addison Montgomery, can catch her when she returns to Grey's Anatomy for at least one of the five new episodes slated to begin this spring.
Last time we saw Addison walking the hallways of Seattle Grace was in the series debut of the Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice, which is this season's second most-watched new drama with an average of more than 10 million viewers per episode. In the Private Practice pilot, Addison said goodbye to Seattle Grace to start a new life and career at the Oceanside Wellness Center in Southern California.
As Walsh makes her much-awaited come back to Grey's Anatomy, executive producer Shonda Rhimes explains that her character Addison will be exploring “the thought that you can never go home again.”
In the episode “Piece of My Heart," which is expected to air on May 1, Addison flies to Seattle Grace at the request of the Chief (James Pickens Jr.) to perform a groundbreaking surgery. While she's determined to set a few people straight, she is also struck by the changes among her old friends.
“There are some things only Addison can do surgically, but there are also things that she can say to people that nobody else in that world will,” Rhimes explained.
Prior to Private Practice, Walsh was cast in Grey's Anatomy in 2005 as Dr. Addison Montgomery, the estranged spouse of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). The role of Addison was originally conceived as a short-term role that was planned out for five episodes but the audience's positive response to Walsh, and to the Derek/Meredith/Addison triangle, convinced series creator Rhimes to expand the role and make Walsh a series regular. As she noted in an interview she's "The house guest who never leaves" referring to her extended role on both Grey's Anatomy and The Drew Carey Show........POLL

SIDES SUMMARIES

Episode 4.13 - Piece of My Heart - Script Summary - 20-Mar-2008
Episode 4.13 "Piece of My Heart"

Characters: Sarah, Freddie, Dr.Thomas, Nikki, Will

Nikki and Will are a young grungy, hippie couple. Nikki is pregnant but the baby’s organs are reversed. The doctor on their case is Dr. Swanson and Nikki remarks that they’ve heard that Dr.Swanson is the best of the best. Will remarks of course she is since they asked the Universe to send them the best. Dr. S explains that they’ll have to perform a two part surgery – first on Nikki, then on the baby to makes sure the baby is stabilized. Dr. S promises to take every precaution to make sure the baby has the best possible chance at survival. Nikki and Will are confident

Later on, Dr. Swanson is taking Nikki’s vitals and alerting Nikki that the surgery will be very complicated and the Cesarian incision will be twice the size it normally is. Nikki says that they are just thankful that the baby is going to be born that day surrounded by their love. Will asks Dr. S when they can take the baby home. Dr. S says that it’s hard to say and will depend on the additional problems the baby’s condition may have caused. Nikki then asks Dr.S if she thinks there’s something more wrong with the baby. Will says to the doctor that their intention is to have a healthy baby. Dr. S says she justs wants them to be prepared. Will answers that they are prepared -- they are prepared for a healthy baby.

Night – in the NICU

Nikki is sitting in a wheelchair next to the incubator. Will is standing nearby. Dr. Smith approaches and tells them that the baby’s “medical” looks good and his heart seems to be responding to the “medical”. Dr. Smith tells them they proved them wrong because the baby was born very strong and very healthy. Will says that it was never about proving anyone wrong. Dr. Smith apologizes for the way he spoke to them earlier. Will says it’s ok because Dr.Smith was just trying to make them hear him and they did – they just didn’t believe him because he was giving them the bad and there’s a whole lot of bad to focus on if you want to. Will then says there’s also hope. There’s always hope.

Nikki smiles and strokes the baby’s head. Will moves close to Nikki and takes her hand. Off Dr.Smith, wanting very much to be unaffected…

Sarah & Freddie are another couple. They are waiting in the clinic, holding hands and looking very worried. Dr.Walters walks up to them and informs them that Sarah is pregnant. Sarah says that they need to schedule an abortion then. Freddie turns to Sarah and starts apologizing and Sarah begins to cry quietly and is embarrassed. Dr.W says that a counselor would advise them to sit with this for a few days before making a decision. Freddie says there’s no decision to make. It was an accident and they are always so careful. Sarah then says she’s HIV+ and the condom broke. She just wants to get it over with and asks if the abortion could be done that day.

Dr.W takes that in and feels utterly powerless.

Night – Clinic

Dr.W is charting and Sarah approaches. Sarah starts asking Dr.W how could she give them that type of false hope. She says her husband had given up on the idea of having children when he married her and it wasn’t fair that she had to disappoint him again. Dr. W starts saying she’s sorry but Sarah continues… She tells Dr.W that she doesn’t know what it’s like living with the disease and taking meds every day. She says she was diagnosed when she was 19 and has lived with HIV her whole adult life. She has learned how to deal with it but she won’t put that onto a baby. She can’t bring a baby into this world who could have the disease. Dr.W tells Sarah that she knows she had given up on having children a long time ago and it’s hard to readjust her thinking but if Sarah were to take her meds responsibly there’s a chance for her to be a mom.

Sarah looks at Dr.W and bursts into tears (happy, grateful, overwhelmed tears). Freddie arrives concerned and asks if everything is alright. Sarah tells him they are having a baby. Off Dr.W, watching the two of them and happy for them.

(this next scenes from the Freddie sides obviously happen before Sarah talks to Dr.Walters)

Freddie – Dr.W is working on another clinic patient and sees Freddie. Dr.W excuses himself and goes over to Freddie and asks him if there’s anything he needs and that she has already paged an OB but doesn’t know how long it’ll take… Freddie tells Dr.W that they have never had unprotected sex. Dr.W says she’s not judging. Freddie says that they’ve never had unprotected sex and the one time in 10 years that the condom breaks, Sarah gets pregnant. Freddie says he knows there must have been medical advances since Sarah has been diagnosed and asks if there’s any way they could keep the baby. Dr.W unsure…

Later in the clinic, Dr.W sits down with Sarah and Freddie and tells Sarah that she knows that when she was diagnosed she was told that a pregnancy was not a responsible option for her but that a lot has changed. Dr.W informs them that medications have changed and they know a lot more now… Sarah could have this baby is she wants to. Freddie gets really excited and happy. Dr.W tells them that the meds will have to be adjusted and Dr.W hasn’t found them an OB yet and it may be difficult to find one. Freddie says it doesn’t matter and they’ll figure things out. He’s clearly ecstatic and overjoyed.

Dr.Thomas (described as a sweet looking grandpa of a doctor). Dr.W approaches Dr.Thomas and thanks him for meeting her on such short notice. Dr.W then tells Dr.T that the patient in question is 35 years old, 6 weeks pregnant and has Huntington’s Disease. Dr.T says his week is pretty full but he probably squeeze in an evacuation. Dr.W says that she’s been doing some research and thinks that may not be necessary. She tells Dr.T that the patient wants to keep the baby and she [Dr.W] was hoping that Dr.T could take her in as a patient. Dr. T straight out says no. Dr.W asks why. Dr.T asks Dr.W if she knows the potential malpractice risks in a patient of that type. If something were to go wrong, the insurance hassles alone... Dr.W asks “Insurance hassles?” Dr.T then says his practice is full. Dr.W counters by asking if it would still be full if the patient was perfectly healthy. Dr.T says he won’t treat the patient and wishes Dr.W good luck in finding an OB who will. Dr.T says that patient is a malpractice suit waiting to happen. His advice is that the patient should abort.

Dr.T walks away and Dr.W is left stunned.

----------------------------------

I think Dr.Swanson being the "best of the best" is obviously going to be Dr. Addison Montgomery. Dr.Smith who later talks to the couple in the NICU sounds like Alex to me. It sounds like Dr.Smith said something a little too harsh (Alex's trademark brutal honestly?) which is why he later apologizes for it and Will points out that Dr.Smith was just giving them the bad side of things. Also the description of Dr.Smith trying very hard to be unnafected totally sounds like Alex. So it looks like we'll be seeing Addie and Alex working together again.

Dr.Walters sounds like it may be Izzie or Meredith to me.

Title reference: The episode title referes to a song by Erma Franklin, which has been covered by artists such as Janis Joplin & Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Faith Hill.

Piece of My Heart Lyrics
Artist(Band):Janis Joplin

(Come on…)
Didn't I make you feel like you were the only man, well yeah,
An' didn't I give you nearly everything that a woman possibly can ?
Honey, you know I did!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I think I've had enough,
But I'm gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough.

I want you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby, (break a..)
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah. (have a..)
Hey! Have another little piece of my heart now, baby, yeah.
You know you got it if it makes you feel good,
Oh yes indeed.

You're out on the streets looking good, and baby,
Deep down in your heart I guess you know that it ain't right,
Never never never never never never never hear me when I cry at night.
Baby, I cry all the time!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I can't stand the pain,
But when you hold me in your arms, I'll sing it once again.

I'll say come on, come on, come on, come on, yeah take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby. (break a..)
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah, (come on…)
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby, yeah.
Well, You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good

Guitar

I need you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby. (break a…)
Break another little bit of my heart, darling, yeah. (have a)
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it (waaaaahhh)
Take a…Take another little piece of my heart now, baby. (break a…)
Break another little bit of my heart, and darling, yeah yeah (have a)
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good

PODCAST

Grey's Anatomy official podcast, May 2, 2008.

4.13 "Piece of My Heart"

Izzie envies George’s popularity among the interns, Cristina tries to talk “girl,” and Addison returns to Seattle Grace…temporarily. All that and more in today’s Official Grey’s Anatomy Podcast hosted by ABC.com.

Let’s get right to the good stuff, shall we? Executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers have a lot to say about the last episode “Piece of my Heart” because, well, a lot happened. They also tantalize us with a few tidbits about the next episode, “The Becoming,” which airs Thursday, May 8th, 9pm/8pm central on ABC. Shonda and Betsy, over to you.

SR: Hi, I’m Shonda.

BB: I’m Betsy.

SR/BB: And this is Grey’s Anatomy.

BB: So, we’re back.

SR: We are back.

BB: It’s really nice to be back, sort of on a consistent basis, and I keep getting… still get enjoyment when I walk into the office and see everybody’s there which is good.

SR: The shows are coming along really well.

BB: The shows are coming along great. And one of the big exciting things is that just in case people don’t know (but they probably know by now) is our big season finale is two parts now instead of one.

SR: Yup. And we’re filming it now.

BB: We’re filming it now. And so, it’s sorta double the Grey’s and double the trouble and double the fun.

SR: And it has a really good ending.

BB: It’s got such a good ending…

SR: I’m pretty proud of it.

BB: That I can actually say cause I didn’t write it, she did, that it’s a really, really, really good ending. And actually the whole two parter is great, and it’s also gonna air from nine to eleven which means that it’s two parts together which is my favorite thing, because you just literally have a chance to go to the bathroom, get some ice cream, and come back and then it’s right back there.

SR: Get your Grey’s on.

BB: Exactly. Which is great, so we’re all really excited about that. And, um.

SR: But we’re here to talk about…

BB: Yeah, a more recent episode which you saw last night.

SR: Piece of My Heart.

BB: Piece of My Heart, which is, I think, awesome for millions of different reasons but for me, first and foremost, because you actually get to see Addison at Seattle Grace again.

SR: I was gonna say, it’s sorta all Addison, all the time, which is really, really good.

BB: It’s really, really good. And you know, I’ve gotten used to her in her sort of California dreaming, relaxation look…

SR: Yeah.

BB: But to see her back in her power shoes and her skirt is great.

SR: But what I love is that you can sort of put the girl back in her Louis Vuittons, but you can’t really take the California out of the girl. She spends the episode kinda being like “Hey, I’m Zen, I’ve changed, and it’s great.”

BB: She quotes Gandhi.

SR: Which I thought was wonderful.

BB: Which is terrific, and that actually Izzie knew she quoted Gandhi, which is really good.

SR: Yeah. And I just love, I love the first moment when she sees Meredith and Derek and she hugs Meredith. And she’s all proud of herself.

BB: I hug now!

SR: But she doesn’t even realize they’ve broken up, which is even better. It’s just pure Addison, which is wonderful.

BB: I think it’s awesome, but I also think it was great for me because it’s sort of like you get to see a little closure for Addison which you never really got to see before because she comes and she reevaluates and she assesses. And look, her old job is open. They haven’t hired a neonatal care specialist. Special special gynecological person person surgical worldclass who pulls babies out and sews things up, exactly.

SR: Yeah.

BB: So the fact is, technically she could’ve come back. I mean, I don’t think she would have because she lives in Los Angeles with a group of people that hopefully you guys know.

SR: I was gonna say, I don’t know if you guys noticed, but she has her own show.

BB: She does, which will be coming back in the fall.

SR: Private Practice. Wednesday nights.

BB: Yes, exactly. Nine o’clock. But it was also great, everybody was really happy to see Kate again. I think, in terms of the cast, too, I think it was just really fun to have her around.

SR: It was fun. It was just a little bit of old home week. It was very nice.

BB: So that was, I think, really exciting, and I also think seeing, right now, Seattle Grace through her eyes threw a totally different perspective on a lot of different things. I would say certainly first and foremost and most both humorously and upsetting for some of them was her opinion on Callie and Erica Hahn.

SR: Yeah.

BB: Which I think is great.

SR: Which I love, you know, she says are you guys speakin the Vagina Monologues now, which I thought was just a great way into the whole thing. And poor Callie’s having a little bit of a panic about the whole concept was, I thought, really interesting.

BB: I totally agree. I totally, totally agree.

SR: It’s that thing that, you know, she wasn’t thinking about, you know, until somebody pointed out that maybe she should be thinking about it. And then, that is all you can think about.

BB: Then you become deeply, deeply self-conscious about it. But it was also Addison just assuming with this big ole grin on her face…

SR: Yeah.

BB: That she’d missed a lot.

SR: Very open.

BB: Totally.

SR: And well, by that point, she felt like she had missed a lot.

BB: And she had.

SR: She found out that Meredith and Derek had broken up.

BB: Bailey’s acting weird.

SR: And Derek has a new girlfriend, so by that point she felt like things had changed a lot, maybe.

BB: It’s true.

SR: So she’s asking a question, which I thought was kind of great.

BB: Absolutely. I also really, really loved the moment and the very end where she looks at Meredith and she says if you let him go off with that doe-eyed thing.

SR: Yeah.

BB: I mean, basically I’ll kick your ass which…I don’t know, that’s just…

SR: Which I loved because for Addison to have you know, had her marriage fall apart, have let it go, to have walked away from it, she’d walked away accepting the idea that it because Meredith and Derek were meant to be together because Derek loved Meredith and she’d sort of accepted that concept. It was okay that this had all happened because Derek had found the love of his life. And then to come back and find out that he’s not with the quote-unquote love of his life, he’s now with a very nice, McReboundy nurse was a little bit upsetting for her.

BB: I think absolutely the case. I think that’s absolutely the case. And I think, in a weird way for Meredith, too, who’s desperately trying to adjust to the fact that Derek’s got a new girlfriend, who’s trying to move on, but you can see it’s incredibly a) painful for her, and cool.gif she doesn’t feel like it’s right, either, and I think Addison’s call to arms in a weird way gave her the courage to then start dealing in some weird way in a much more active way.

SR: Yes.

BB: Either healing and moving on or not. But I think Addison’s acknowledgement of her pain whether or not she sees it—and Addison’s own pain at the ridiculousness of it—means that she’s not alone, and that was really cool to me.

SR: It was a nice way to put it.

BB: In a way these two people come together - the dirty, dirty mistress and the ex-wife, and it’s basically the ex-wife saying…

SR: Satan and the dirty mistress, yeah…

BB: It’s true, Satan’s got a sense of humor. It’s true, but I thought, it’s a very odd bedfellows situation, but one that you’ve sort of seen coming forever and…

SR: They both love the same guy.

BB: They both do.

SR: In their own ways.

BB: And I think that was just really, really great.

SR: The other thing I loved was Bailey. Because we haven’t really talked about what’s been going on with Bailey since we saw her in episode 4.11 when her baby was in trouble.

BB: And her husband goes to stay at a hotel.

SR: And her husband goes to stay at a hotel which is the last thing you find out, and we haven’t really talked about it. And one of the things I love about Bailey – I’ve always loved about her – is that her personal life is always sort of separate from the hospital, like we don’t like follow a lot of her personal life.

BB: Yeah.

SR: Which is why it was so interesting to do the episode where her baby comes in sick. But also, what was great about it was, there are details about Bailey that you just never know, like you don’t know for 12 or 13 episodes even that Bailey has a husband in the beginning.

BB: You didn’t know actually until you see her in a dress, because it’s like the…

SR: Going out for her anniversary dinner.

BB: And then she has to come back because the train wreck.

SR: Yes.

BB: And it’s this huge revelation, I remember, when you—when it came up in the script –this huge revelation because we never really talked about it cause Bailey was just Bailey, but then to find out that

SR: She’s pretty happily married.

BB: She’s pretty happily married. She’s all saucy in her evening wear. And then…

SR: And you get to see a piece of that marriage in the Super Bowl episode when her husband’s had the accident and she has the baby and she brings him that fabulous baby and says this is our son, which I love. William George Bailey Jones.

BB: That’s right.

SR: Who they call Tuck, for inexplicable reasons. But…

BB: Named after his father, but not.

SR: But what I love about it is, is just the idea that in this episode, you know, she’s holding it in. You realize that basically for her she’s holding in everything she can hold in so that she can keep it together. And she has that one beautiful long speech to Addison about how her husband’s not, you know, home anymore and how she hasn’t slept alone in 12 years and now she is and how much her heart hurts, and you realize that Bailey who goes about the business being Bailey like nobody I’ve ever seen, you know, keeps on with keeping on, is in incredible pain.

BB: Well, and what I think is weird for Bailey is that it’s a lot harder for Bailey to actually have a friend in the hospital than it is for her not to have friends in the hospital, and that’s—I think Addison sorta became--

SR: Well, She is the one who keeps her personal life completely separate.

BB: Absolutely, and so when confronted with someone who had sorta become a friend before she left.

SR: It’s very difficult.

BB: It’s incredibly difficult because it really, really puts her ability to keep a lid on things in question. Which is what’s so moving to watch this whole episode, realizing that there’s something she has to say and we’re curious too. I spent a fair amount of the episode going “What’s going on with Bailey?”

SR: Why did she look like that?

BB: Why did she look like that.

BB/SR: PHONE!!!

BB: That’s the phone. And we have a different assistant now, we used to have Jim, now we have Nancy, who’s great, and if you notice she answers the phone really quickly.

SR: Immediately.

BB: So, Jim liked to let it ring a few times for entertainment’s sake. Nancy gets to the point. I think that’s key.

SR: The other thing that happens in this episode is that Jane Doe/Rebecca/Ava whatever you want to call her comes back.

BB: I was gonna say…Every once in a while I see Rebecca or hear the name Rebecca and I have to stop and I go, “Hey, who’s Rebecca? She’s Ava!”

SR: Because for me, she’s Ava and sometimes she’s Jane Doe, but mostly she’s Ava. Alex named her Ava, she’s Ava.

BB: But she became Ava when she came back.

SR: Yeah. But what I think is beautiful about that is, you know, that’s kinda the point. That she says to Alex at the end of last season that I was more me as Ava than I ever was as Rebecca. And so to us, spiritually, emotionally, she is Ava. But her name is Rebecca Pope.

BB: Thank you.

SR: Rebecca Pope.

BB: Just keep remembering…

SR/BB: Rebecca Pope.

SR: And she comes back, and, um, tells Alex that there’s a bun in the oven.

BB: There’s a tiny little bun, but there’s a bun.

SR: There’s something growing there.

BB: Bun nonetheless. Cause I think it’s, uh…She seems to know it, too, like she’s been pregnant before, so she has a pretty good sense as to her body.

SR: Yeah.

BB: And I love Alex’s entire attitude.

SR: This is not a thing you want me for.

BB: This is not something you want me for. It recalls back the end of last season when he says to Addison, you know, I’m not the guy with the barbecue, and the…I can’t quote it exactly because I’m not you, but it’s that whole speech about “I’m not that guy, I’m not that guy that you want me to be, or think that I am.” But even then you see Alex struggling with it a bit. And this--

SR: Yeah, he’s always struggling with it.

BB: He is.

SR: His dark past.

BB: His dark past, and the thing about Alex, too, is that Alex and Bailey are the two that you just don’t really know what happened.

SR: You don’t know anything about. And my favorite thing about this – I don’t know if I’ve talked about it before – but in the drowning episodes where Meredith is dead, and Denny is talking to her, and he says, you know, Izzie lost me, and Cristina – he tells this whole beautiful story about how Cristina lost her father in a car accident and was there when he died, and he goes on and on and on talking about everybody, and then he goes “and Alex…” and Meredith cuts him off. So you still never find out what happened to Alex.

BB: It’s true.

SR: I do think you’ll find out a little bit more about what happened to Alex by the end of the season.

BB: I think you will, too. I think, much like Bailey, just a little bit.

SR: Just a little bit of reveal.

BB: But just enough to kinda give this entire thing a context and a sense of perspective.

SR: But, it was great to have her back and I think it’s going to be very interesting to watch what happens with her and Alex especially if I don’t know if you saw that last moment when Izzie said “My patient’s not pregnant?”

BB: Rebecca Pope?

SR: And then Alex puts his hand on Rebecca Pope’s belly. And then maybe you might wonder what’s going on here?

BB: Maybe just a little bit.

SR: What’s going down?

BB: Something’s kind of odd.

SR: Something’s fishy.

BB: Maybe Izzie’s crazy.

SR: Something smells rotten.

BB: Maybe Izzie’s going through the same thing she went through last week which is she’s gonna give Rebecca a spinal tap for absolutely no reason. Just to see if she’s really pregnant. I don’t know, but I doubt it, because I think Izzie’s a little better doctor than that so…

SR: Maybe there’s aliens in there. Maybe the show’s going a whole different way with aliens.

BB: Maybe we’re sort of combining with Lost. Maybe there’s going to be a hatch in a hospital, and aliens will come out. Hi, Damon.

SR: What’s up, Damon?

BB: Hey Damon! How’s it going?

SR: That’s our last shout out…

BB: So I think that’s going to be really, really, really exciting and fun to watch. I think on the totally the other end of the spectrum is Cristina.

SR: Yeah.

BB: Who is in her own world of living hell. I mean, this is a woman who pretty much could operate almost independently as a surgeon.

SR: She’s trying so—what I love in this episode is she’s trying so hard to get along or to find a way in with Hahn, and it’s very—it was distressing to her to find out that Hahn and Callie were friends in the first place, and now, not only that, like she can’t seem to make any inroads. I mean, I love that moment when she’s like “Hippies, annoying, huh?” And then Hahn’s like “Go away.” It’s horrible because she really doesn’t know how to talk girl. And I love the scene where she desperately tries to talk girl and fails miserably.

BB: Yeah, which is great. Does it hurt your heart?

SR: Yeah.

BB: I like does it hurt your heart. For some reason, I just think that’s incredibly funny.

SR: I love that that’s how she thinks other people talk about their feelings.

BB: She’s trying.

SR: Yeah.

BB: It’s just – that’s what she sees on television.

SR: Exactly.

BB: Every once in a while I think now and in the future of Grey’s Anatomy, somebody should just say “does that hurt your heart” to justify the fact that Cristina thinks that’s what women talk like. But she’s trying so hard, and it’s like the end of last episode which just breaks my heart where she walks in the house and the two of them are having a good time, and…

SR: And she’s on the outside looking in, and she desperately wants to be in with Erica Hahn. And she’s…it’s just not gonna happen.

BB: And Hahn is being a real hard ass. I mean Addison had a totally great moment where she looks at her and says “a little harsh, don’t you think?”

SR: But I also think Erica has a point because when she says she reminds me of me, it puts everything in perspective. That and she can’t stand it. She just can’t stand watching this girl desperately seek all this approval that she’s never gonna get.

BB: No, it’s absolutely true. The other thing that I just have to mention – it’s just one of my favorite things is “you coded.”

SR: Oh, you coded. You coded was something we came up with in the writer’s room…

BB: Ok, that made me laugh until stuff came out of my nose when I first read it.

SR: And Alan Heinberg –one of our writers, Alan Heinberg—is I think the one who came up with the exact phrase and the hand gesture. The hand gesture was then amended and changed by T.R., and it’s one of our favorite things. I think we’re actually going to have t-shirts that have the little “you coded” symbol on it.

BB: That say “you coded,” cause “you coded” is just the little murmurings of all the interns.

SR: You coded, you coded…Hey dude, you coded. I love that!

BB: Where’s Izzie’s sitting around and saying what is that? And then Izzie tries to say “you coded.”

SR: Oh, that’s the best moment where she’s like “What? It’s a new phrase, everyone’s saying it.” And she’s trying so hard.

BB: And she wants to…

SR: She just wants to get in with George.

BB: She does, and the thing is, they’re both caught in between worlds.

SR: Yes.

BB: Professionally because I think right now George is caught in between being a resident and being an intern, and Izzie’s caught between knowing what she wants to do and not knowing what she wants to do.

SR: Yeah.

BB: And in the resident world, everybody else is directed, and Izzie’s lost, she’s at sea, so the only thing which is familiar and cozy for her is the world of “you coded.” But she almost ruins their darts night.

SR: Yeah, yeah. It’s pretty funny.

BB: That’s really funny I thought, so…I know. I know.

SR: That was great…Um, Hahn and Callie.

BB: Hahn and Callie.

SR: What is there to say?

BB: What do you want to say about Hahn and Callie?

SR: I love the moment when Hahn takes the hair out of the lip gloss, and Callie gets that look on her face, and then decides she must dance with Mark Sloan and then take him home.

BB: It’s the pure deer in the headlights look that she’s got.

SR: Yeah, there is a panic happening there.

BB: There’s a total panic…

SR: Which, you know…if somebody tries to redefine you in a way that you’re not ready to be defined, I get the freaking out.

BB: Totally. Well, I think it makes total, total sense. And also, since Mark Sloan’s always been the desperate recreational activity of people who don’t really know what they want to do?

SR: Well, Mark’s useful for that.

BB: He is very useful for that. He’s got a real purpose in terms of that.

SR: And I love the moment when she says to Meredith and Cristina, “Does anyone ever think that you guys are a couple?” And they’re like “No, cause we screw boys like whores on tequila. Don’t try to marry us, we’ll drown ourselves.”

BB: I think that’s maybe one of my favorite lines of all time.

SR: Yeah, it’s one of my favorites. Yeah.

BB: I think I can probably espouse to that in my life. I think it’s a good thing to have in your back pocket.

SR: Absolutely.

BB: Tequila and dirty whores is I think really, really good. You know, I think the whole thing with Phillip…I think, I love, I love that character.

SR: Yeah, Jason O’Mara.

BB: That just upset me so much, and I know that there’s maybe a way they can solve this brain problem, but I…

SR: They’re working on solving the brain problem.

BB: They’re working on solving the brain problem…

SR: But they didn’t solve it with Phillip.

BB: And the thing with Phillip, just watching Phillip go through the changes. I mean, you said something really interesting actually last week when we were talking about this stuff, that this week’s Phillip is totally different than last week’s Phillip.

SR: Yes. When Phillip comes in…

BB: We didn’t have a recap, actually.

SR: Yeah, we didn’t have a recap on purpose because when Phillip comes in, he’s so altered by the effects of the tumor that he is in fact a different guy.

BB: And we consistently see that it’s the same guy and his rebound girl certainly sees that it’s the same guy, but it’s a totally different person. And I think real kudos to Jason O’Mara who can play both parts incredibly well, like Jekyll and Hyde.

SR: Yeah, he was brilliant. That was not an easy role to play at all.

BB: I know. I mean, laughing when you get the news of a brain tumor, and then just screaming like a vicious man.

SR: All the rage and yeah.

BB: And then flipping back so fast?

SR: And yet, still being someone that you—that we, the audience root for is really interesting.

BB: It’s that moment where Derek stops him before they go into surgery to remind him to get himself back to who he is.

SR: Say something nice to your wife.

BB: So he can say something nice to his wife. That just breaks your heart. I mean, absolutely just breaks your heart. But I’m really curious about the experimentation and the brain surgery, I think that’s—

SR: The clinical trials with the cocktail of virus.

BB: But also that for the first time in a really long time, Meredith seems to really have a purpose.

SR: I love that Meredith has a purpose. I love it that she is on this mission to save these patients. I think it’s going to be a really interesting journey for her.

BB: And I think also obviously the irony being that she seems to be really taking a good shine to brain surgery and she has to constantly confront guess who.

SR: Derek.

BB: Because there don’t seem to be a whole lot of great brain surgeons floating around Seattle Grace. It’s not like she can call Dr. Phone-Bone who’s the other great brain surgeon and then do this because a) I think Derek would probably be a little offended and then cool.gif as far as we know, for the periods of time that we’re there, Derek is the brain surgeon on call.

SR: It also would’ve been difficult if what she decided to do was to save people who got liposuction or something. It wouldn’t have made it as interesting.

BB: So there she would’ve been working with Dr. Sloan.

SR: Wouldn’t have been as interesting.

BB: No. And maybe not as sympathetic.

SR: Not as sympathetic.

BB: When you say that was a bad liposuction accident, I think we need to do some…

SR: There was a little more fat on the left glut than the right.

BB: There was some scarring that occurred with that liposuction.

SR: I can’t really imagine any weeping going on...

BB: You know that’d be hard to place music to.

SR: …or any great love stories.

BB: Exactly, the big liposuction montage I think would be a little bit rough.

SR: As someone examines their liposuctioned thighs.

BB: It’d be really tough.

SR: The other thing that we did on the show, which I was actually very proud of and was spearheaded by our medical researcher Elizabeth (???) was we told an HIV mom story. What was great about that is not only did we tell an HIV mom story, but we actually participated in a study so that we would tell this HIV mom story, get out a piece of information, and then Kaiser surveyed people to see how many people knew—understood that an HIV positive mother could have a healthy baby before the show aired and how many people understood than an HIV positive mom could have a healthy baby after the show aired.

BB: And we’re actually waiting for those—PHONE!

SR: PHONE!

BB: We’re actually waiting for the results of that, but I think it’s one of the ways we can actually be useful.

SR: Well, yeah, there have been several powerful studies that people get – and this is terrifying to me, it was terrifying to me when I started the show – but that more people get their medical information from watching television dramas than they do from their doctors.

BB: Which is actually why it’s a double burden on us to make sure that we’re accurate when we bring cases.

SR: Yeah, we try really hard to be accurate.

BB: Because it ends up being a sort of social responsibility in a way since people are getting a huge amount of their medical information here.

SR: And there’s a thing that you come away with from this episode which I honestly didn’t know—

BB: I didn’t either.

SR: That there is a larger chance that your baby will be born with Down’s Syndrome than your child will be born with HIV.

BB: It’s true.

SR: 98% chance that you’re going to have a healthy baby if you take your meds and you go and get medical help. That was really interesting to me, and also I thought, just a lovely story.

BB: And what’s interesting, too, in terms of feedback initially is that in talking about this people said well, of course everyone would know this. Doctors would know this, this isn’t out. The fact that none of us knew it is a huge indicator, I think, of the fact that actually, no, it’s not something that’s well known.

SR: And while many doctors know it, the thing that is really interesting that I learned from Elizabeth when she was doing her research was that while many doctors know it, there are a lot of doctors not willing to treat HIV positive moms simply because it’s difficult. So it was really interesting information to get out.

BB: It was great and I’m hoping we can do something like that in the future because I think that—

SR: We like to do good.

BB: We like to do good instead of evil. Next week…

SR: Next week, on Grey’s Anatomy…

BB: I know, we have an episode called “The Becoming.”

SR: And that is a really good episode.

BB: Oh, this is just like…

SR: That is full of juicy, juicy goodness.

BB: This is really good.

SR: It’s really good. I also…

BB: A lot of stuff comes to a head in this episode.

SR: You’re going to want to buy the DVD when it comes out because we’re going to do an extended version of that episode

BB: It’s gonna be extra long

SR: Because it was like a sixty-six minute show, and we only show forty-two on the air, and there’s a lot of good stuff in there and you’re going to really enjoy it.

BB: Yeah, and the stuff that actually is going to be included in the DVD extended, I think you’re really going to enjoy, and it’s really going to help the enjoyment factor watching the whole episode later, so…

SR: Yes. I mean, you’ll enjoy it when you see it next week, but you’ll enjoy it even more when you see it on the DVD.

BB: So we’re really hoping you tune in because a lot of stuff happens…

SR: You better tune in.

BB: …on “The Becoming,” and if you want to really enjoy that super, super last three episode finale package…

SR: Yeah

BB: …then you want to watch this episode.

SR: Yeah, there’s a moment that, at the end of the episode that if you miss it you’re going to be really bummed because it’s pretty awesome.

BB: Really annoyed. It’s pretty good. It’s really, really pretty good.

SR: Yeah.

BB: So, I hope you’re back next week. We’re looking forward to talking to you. This is Betsy.

SR: Shonda.

BB: And this is Grey’s Anatomy.

VOICE OVERS & QUOTES

Meredith: [voice over] Great surgeons aren't made they're born. It takes gestation, incubation, sacrifice. A lot of sacrifice. But after all the blood and guts and gooey stuff is washed away, that surgeon you become? Totally worth it!

Meredith: [voice over] Giving birth may be all intense and magical, but the act itself is not exactly pleasant. But its also a beginning of something incredible .... something new .... something unpredictable something true ... something worth loving ..... something worth missing ..... and something that will change your life forever. But its also a beginning of something incredible.

'Grey's Anatomy': Heart Murmurs - May 2, 2008
The return of Dr. Addison Montgomery for a fetal cardiac surgery inspires the staffers to talk about their true feelings
Okay, kids, our show is back — for real this week. And I'm going to go ahead and pretend it's not just because Addison made a cameo on last night's episode — the writing and the regular cast deserve a lot of the credit. But I'll also say that this ensemble has always run on its very complicated chemistry, and any time a key component is subtracted (this went for Burke as well), it takes some readjusting to keep things running smoothly. So it might not be a total coincidence that a little injection of Kate Walsh magically pushed everything back into place. Too bad she has to head back to the kiddie pool of Private Practice....cont'd

'Grey's Anatomy': Back with a vengeance

So Dr. Hahn is a lesbian. Cool. It's about time "Grey's Anatomy" had a gay, or at least non-morbidly-heterosexual character. And we're not at all certain that Hahn (Brooke Smith) is a lesbian, just that she and Callie (Sara Ramirez) seem to have some sort of mutual pash going on -- could just be a girl crush, since Callie seems totally freaked, or it could be the real thing, since Callie seems totally freaked. And what's wrong with exploring bi-sexuality on network television (though they better get moving if they want to get the jump on "House.")? .......cont’d

(S04E13) "It's like I never left." - Addison

She's baaaaaack. The triumphant return of Addison. And yes I do mean triumphant - this was arguably the best episode of the season and it's funny if you think about it. Had the WGA Strike not happened, Private Practice wouldn't have gotten shelved until the fall season (only 9 season one eps aired), and Kate Walsh wouldn't have had all that free time to guest star. With her return came the Grey's Anatomy I remember. Snappy dialogue, good character development, and lots of laughs. Despite the annoying recurrence of all the cases eerily mirroring what's going on in their respective doctors' lives, I loved this episode..................read on

A season to forget for TV networks - May 4, 2008
AS REAL-LIFE broadcasters get set to announce their fall schedules next week in New York, they're still scratching their way out of a trench, otherwise known as the worst season in the history of the network TV business.

Not a single one of the new fall series broke through to a big audience, even the ones that looked can't-fail on paper, such as ABC's spinoff "Private Practice" and NBC's now-dead revival of "Bionic Woman."

Every network except Fox has posted significant ratings declines for the season so far, according to data from Nielsen Media Research.
Even as existing series have gradually returned from the three-month writers strike, viewers have, to the surprise and dismay of network executives, stayed away.............read on

AMPTP suspends negotiations with SAG - May 7th 2008
Raise your hand if you saw this one coming. The prospects for another strike went up as negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) once again broke down, with the AMPTP moving to negotiations with AFTRA. Among the issues causing the split, and stop me if you've heard this one before, DVD residuals, streaming, and new media. Go figure. One new wrinkle in these negotiations comes in the form of an AMPTP provision that would give them free and unlimited use of short clips of an actor's work in movies and television...............cont’d

ABC.com Testing Multiple Commercials For Online TV Episodes - May 4, 2008
Disney-ABC Television Group plans to test viewer reaction to the presence of multiple commercials within long-form online videos on its ABC.com streaming media player, THR reports. It's fairly standard for videos sites like Hulu to run only one marketer/one commercial between breaks in full-length streaming episode. Albert Cheng, EVP, digital media at DATG, concedes that viewer tolerance might not extend beyond the one-ad-per-pod model for online video, but he also feels that given the nascent stage of the format, it's premature to accept this rule as set in stone.

-- Raising CPMs: On average, the major TV networks charge about $25 CPMs, with $40 CPMs commanded by highly rated shows. Most video sites are in line with those figures, though the larger sites tend to command much higher prices by dint of the greater target viewers. By offering a series of ads, ABC.com hopes it can take advantage of that and wrest more revenues out of its online videos. ABC.com has been particularly aggressive in trying out different paths from CBS (NYSE: CBS) and NBC over the past two years. It initially resisted syndication when its rivals quickly embraced that distribution model, though ABC.com eventually switched gears on that front. Still, ABC.com was the first of the major TV nets to run full-length episodes online, starting with shows like Grey's Anatomy and Lost

-- Better targeted ads: The key to pulling off this gambit depends on marketers being able to create ads better suited to the internet, Cheng tells THR. That means not running repackaged TV spots. ABC research claims that it found significantly higher responsiveness to spots that had an interactive component, like casual gaming. In the end, if the research says that multiple ads don't work, Cheng promises that ABC.com will readily abandon the strategy.

Stacy McKee on "Piece of My Heart"...

I have a confession to make. About the character of Addison: I love her. Not va.gina monologue kind of love – but love none the less.

I love her sense of humor. I love her friendships with Callie and Bailey. I love how she’s always known exactly how to call Derek out on exactly whatever it is he needs to be called out on. I love how good she is at her job. I love that she’s basically Sloan’s McDreamy – even if his feelings aren’t reciprocated. I love that she loves potato chips. I love that she walks the hospital halls in heels that any normal woman would twist her ankle in… I love Addison. And I love that this was her episode to come back to Seattle for a visit.

The nice thing about bringing Addison back right now is that – she’s been gone a while. She hasn’t been privy to most of the Seattle Grace shenanigans since her departure. So she’s uniquely qualified to walk back through the doors at SGH and call things like she sees them. She can react the way we’re all secretly reacting to Derek Christopher Shepherd pining away for someone OTHER than Meredith Grey. She can notice just how much her good friend Callie seems to jive with newbie Erica Hahn… and Addison can get Bailey to admit (the way Bailey would NEVER admit to someone she saw and worked with everyday) that she is really struggling right now, just to keep it together.

Addison is a perfect sounding board because a lot of our characters don’t have sounding boards of their own right now. Addison is a safe confidant. She can take in everyone’s uncertainty, their panic, their pain… and take it right back to LA with her when she leaves. No one needs to worry about their friends and colleagues at SGH seeing the cracks in their armor. Which is good. Because right now – there are a lot of cracks.

For instance, Izzie. She’s floundering right now. She’s all on her own and trying to figure things out for herself – but “on her own” is not exactly a comfortable place for Izzie to be… She doesn’t have the same kind of connection with George that she used to have; he’s got Lexie now, and all of his other intern friends. Izzie’s not at the top of her game professionally – she’s not finding her medical stride like Meredith or Cristina. Izzie’s doing the opposite; she’s hiding out in the clinic where even there her patients are requesting different doctors. Then there’s Ava/Rebecca/Jane Doe. Izzie learns Rebecca isn’t actually pregnant, but what can she do with that information? As George and Lexie would say – she’s coded. Hard.

Cristina’s also starting to crack as Erica continues to shut her down over and over and over. The moment in surgery when Erica gives Alex props, and not Cristina – after Cristina is the one who massaged the baby’s heart back to life – for me, that has always been a turning point for Cristina. In that moment, I’ve always imagined that Cristina’s world probably flashes before her eyes– Cristina can’t help but compare her relationship with Erica Hahn to how trusted and encouraged she always was with Burke. The moment leaves Cristina a little raw, which is why she’s able to confront Hahn later at the bar. But even when confronted, Erica’s explanation to Cristina isn’t exactly something Cristina can take a lot of comfort in…

Then there’s Callie – and Erica. And the va.gina monologues, which – actually – I’m choosing not to blog about. This is one story you should just watch and enjoy. Anything I might say about it now will simply step on your enjoyment of what’s to come, so…

On to Derek. Who is all sorts of conflicted over working with Meredith on this clinical trial. On one hand, Meredith is finally shining professionally – and Derek doesn’t want to let her down. He wants her to shine, he wants to help her if he can… but on the other hand, he knows the reality of this clinical trial; he knows there are ridiculous risks. He also knows that the closer he and Meredith work together, the harder it will be for him if he can’t help her make medical history. She’s expecting greatness, and he isn’t sure he can deliver on that, which only feeds his anxiety about performing this first clinical trial surgery.

By the way, I would just like to point out that I’ve been writing on Grey’s since Season One, and Phillip, the clinical trial patient, is the first patient I’ve ever killed in one of my episodes. I made the mistake of mentioning this fact in the writer’s room one day, and I’m pretty sure that had something to do with Shonda’s insistence that Phillip must die (never mind that the story really doesn’t work if he lives. This is all about me. Obviously.) At any rate, I am no longer a patient killing virgin. Just wanted to point that out.

Finally, there’s Alex. And Ava. Or Rebecca. Or whatever you want to call her… Here’s something you should know about this story – we debated a long long time as to whether or not we should reveal in this episode – or a few episodes down the line – that Rebecca isn’t actually pregnant. In fact, even at our table read for this episode, it ended with Izzie looking at lab results, and uttering a little “Oh my god” – but nothing else. And you should have heard the reaction – WHAT DO THE LAB RESULTS SAY?!?!? – which, ultimately, is part of why we decided to at least answer that part of the question in the same episode we introduce it.

This is a story about Alex. Not about an unwanted pregnancy. Not about some unborn baby. It’s about Alex and what he’s getting ready to go through emotionally. What he’s willing and not willing to do. This is about his journey through the rest of the season – so we didn’t want to tease you guys with some faux pregnancy story that ultimately just felt like a stunt. By letting you know now that Rebecca isn’t actually pregnant – then letting you watch Alex take his next few steps forward from this point on… Suddenly the entire arc has a much darker, more interesting underbelly. For instance – think about that last image of Alex reaching over and touching Rebecca’s belly… SO much more weird and creepy when you know what Alex doesn’t. It’s a moment that, for Alex, is filled with something tender and sweet and maybe even a little bit hopeful… only… for us, so not.

Before I sign off, I just wanted to draw your attention to something addressed in this episode - the fact that an HIV positive pregnant woman, with proper prenatal care, has less than a 2% chance of passing HIV on to her unborn baby. It's a piece of medical information most people don't fully understand or realize (I know I didn't) -- including a few doctors. Which is pretty remarkable, really. If you're interested in learning more, you can click here: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/perinatal/index.htm

And that’s that. Addison has come and gone. Ava’s pregnant, but not. Mer and Der are (sort of) killing terminal patients for sport. Callie may or may not be speaking va.gina monologues. And – I just realized – if you’re reading this before watching tonight’s episode then… well… I just spoiled a bunch of stuff for you – which is your fault for reading the blogs before watching the episodes anyway! Two words: Ya Coded.

Top 10 Reasons Why Dr. Addison Montgomery Needs to Get her L.A.-ified A.ss Back To Seattle Grace...Yesterday

Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery is back!

The world-renowned neonatal surgeon? She’s back! Derek Christopher Shepherd’s ex-wife? Back! The doctor who delivered my babies? She’s baaaa-aaaaack. The woman who showed up, unannounced – wearing the sickest pair of Manolos you’ve ever seen – and proceeded to try to win back the man she cheated on?? She’s sooooooo back!!!!

But, only for a night.

Sadly, it’s true. Addie came back to SGH for a medical case. Not for Derek. Not for Mark. Not for me, but for a frea.kin’ surgery. And, now that the surgery is over, Addison is headed back down to L.A. in the morning. Bummer.

Well, a bartender can dream, can’t he? He can envision Dr. Montgomery poking and prodding Meredith to fight for McDreamy. He can wish Dr. Montgomery was here to continue inspiring Izzie when she’s feeling down and out after not being invited to George’s parties. Gosh darn it, a bartender can hope that Alex is able to see right through his scary Fatal Attraction Jane Doe/Rebecca/Ava and come out okay in the end because ADDISON will be right there by his side…

I sure was doing a lot of dreaming, wishing and hoping tonight. And, ya know what? It all got me thinking. Yes, from time to time, I do think, you know. Seriously – Working behind the bar, mixing drinks, watching Callie bolt out with Mark with nothin’ but sheer gay panic written across her face, witnessing Cristina get her as.s handed to her by none other than Erica Hahn, overhearing Addison talk about some doe-eyed little creature thing or something… All of it got me thinking…

We need Addison to come back… Permanently.

This prompted me to write down my top ten reasons why Dr. Addison Montgomery needs to get her L.A.-ified a.ss back to Seattle Grace… Yesterday. So here we go…

10. You can’t just find world-renowned neonatal surgeons in the Yellow Pages. What’s Richard gonna do?

9. Gandhi? Hugging?! Addison really has been in L.A. way too long.

8. Nobody can turn down Mark Sloan and his skin flaps better than Addison can.

7. Ooh! There’s an opening in Erica and Callie’s sunrise yoga class!

6. Izzie needs a mentor. Operating on deers, competing for cardio, “boxes of fun?” Never would’ve happened if Addie were around.

5. Alex is gonna need more than just a shoulder to cry on after Ava/Rebecca-gate is over.

4. It’s about time we had another 60-day sex bet at Seattle Grace.

3. Who’s gonna be there if (or rather, when) Bailey finally does fall apart?

2. If anybody could make Nurse Rose go runnin’ for the hills, it’d be Addison.

1. I really miss those salmon-colored scrubs.

Like I said, a bartender can only dream. So, until next time…

05/01/2008 - "Piece of My Heart"
Season 4, Episode 413

Addison returns to Seattle Grace for a prenatal surgery and it seems nothing has changed. She comes across Meredith and Derek and assumes they're still together. Miranda assures Addison that several things have changed, including Derek and Meredith breaking up.

The case that has brought Addison back is extremely rare: a fetus's heart is growing outside its body. They'll deal with it in a two-step surgery: Addison will deliver the baby and Erica will work on the baby's heart.

Alex is assisting Addison on the surgery and has little time to spare when Ava shows up unexpectedly, even when she announces that she's pregnant. She next goes to the clinic, where Izzie's interns examine her. Izzie considers Ava's reappearances "stalker-like," but Alex lies and says he never slept with Ava.

Cristina is jealous of Callie's friendship with Erica, and Izzie is jealous when she finds out that George had a party that all her interns are now hungover from. She invites herself along when Lexie mentions that they're having another intern get-together that night to play darts. The other interns threaten to drop out if Izzie comes, since none of them can stand her.

Callie introduces Addison to Erica and announces that her divorce -- which is news to Addison -- is the best thing that ever happened to her. Addison asks Callie if she and Erica are a couple, since they really seem like one, and Callie nervously denies it. Callie asks Meredith and Cristina if anyone ever thinks they're a couple and they say no -- they're too busy having sex with guys for anyone to think that.

Fed up with trying to get on Erica's good side on her own, Cristina gives Callie an ultimatum: Make Erica put her on her surgery rotation or Callie has to move out of Cristina's apartment. Erica happily agrees to Callie's request, as long as Callie buys drinks at Joe later.

It's the first day of Meredith's clinical trial on Philip, which involves injecting a virus into his brain tumor. His bizarre behavior now includes trying to find a second husband for his wife, Jennifer. Meredith tells her it's just the tumor talking. His conditions worsens: suddenly he can't see and Derek decides they need to do the surgery immediately.

Addison wants to know what happened between Meredith and Derek, but all he'll admit is that he's now seeing someone else. He also says that he's afraid of disappointing Meredith since the surgery he's doing for her trial is experimental.

Before he's wheeled into surgery, Philip tells his wife he doesn't want to leave her alone, but he dies on the operating table. Meredith confesses that she got her hopes and Derek says he did too. Still, they shake hands and she tells him it was a pleasure working with him today. During the fetal surgery, Addison asks Miranda who Derek's unlucky rebound woman is and is told that it's the nurse to her right, Rose. They successfully deliver the baby, but the mother is hemorrhaging badly, so Addison stays with her. Erica tells Alex that they could lose the baby if Addison doesn't join them soon, so Cristina offers her assistance. Even though Cristina has helped, Erica has praise only for Alex. The baby's heart is successfully enclosed inside its chest just as Addison joins them.

The baby and mother are both saved, so Addison wonders why Miranda is sad. Miranda says if she told her that Tucker left and that her heart is broken, she would fall apart.

Izzie helps a couple who are pregnant but don't want the baby: The mother is HIV-positive and thinks she can't have a baby without infecting it. She tells the couple they can still have the baby and the husband is overjoyed but the wife is furious since she refuses to take the chance of passing on the disease. She orders Izzie to schedule an abortion, as she'd originally requested.

George informs Izzie she can't come to the dart party as the interns don't want to get drunk with their boss. He reminds her she's no longer an intern herself. Realizing that she's been hiding from her duties, she gathers her interns and marches back to to tell the HIV-positive woman that if her only reason for having the abortion is her disease, she should know there's a 98 percent chance that her baby won't be infected. The woman is overwhelmed, but relieved to find that she can be a mother after all.

Richard offers to rehire Addison but she tells him he needs to fill her position: She's not coming back.

At Joe's, Addison's words are still on Callie's mind, so when Mark asks her to dance, she eagerly accepts.

Cristina asks Erica why she won't teach her. Erica tells her to stop seeking her approval. When Addison finds Erica's dismissal harsh, Erica says, "She reminds me of me." They watch Callie dance with Mark: Addison says, "He's pretty," and Eric says, "She's beautiful." Erica watches jealously as Callie leaves the bar with Mark. Before she leaves, Addison asks Meredith why she let Derek get away.

Just as Alex seems to be reconsidering his relationship with Ava, Izzie looks at Ava's paperwork: She's not pregna
