MEDICAL STORIES SIDES SUMMARIES Thursday, 30 August 2007 Episode 6 - Character and Plot Details - Casting Side Thanks to Cathalina, who yet again has done a great job creating this summary for Episode 6, which currently does not have a title. Jackie, Helena, Jason, Mike, and Contest Judge: The two women are fighting with each other on the same gurney as the paramedics take them out of the ambulance. They are fighting over a huge bronze key. Jackie has a dislocated shoulder and a fractured leg, while Helena has a broken nose, cuts, and a chunk of missing scalp. It seems that the ladies were in a contest to win the house of their dreams, and the first one to grab the key wins. Dr. Martin admonishes the two women, and tells them to get their priorities straight and let go of the key. The ladies mull this over, flat-out refuse, and the fight continues. Finally, Dr. Brown has an idea. Dr. Kale (who from a slip on the sides we know is George) is going to be the proxy for Jackie so she will allow Dr. Martin to take her and reset her shoulder. However, when Dr. Martin examines Jackie she finds that her shoulder is much worse than thought and she cannot reset it without surgery. Jackie refuses the surgery at first. George is talking to Helena. She says that she knows he thinks she is crazy, but she does not have a choice. George tells her she does, she could just let go. Helena explains to him her situation - her mother has done everything possible to help her get settled ever since she got engaged. Her mother is a woman of modest means, and Helena knows she will bankrupt herself to give Helena the life that she didn't have. It's important to her that Helena's life be perfect, since after Helena's dad walked out on her, her mother's life wasn't. George seems to respect this. Later, we learn that Helena needed surgery. When she comes out of it, she learns that her spleen had ruptured and she needed emergency surgery. Also, George had let go of the key so Helena won the house. Note: The Contest Judge is hysterical. He ultimately begs the doctors to medicate him. Mr. Arnold - A man in his 30's. He is nervous, and is complaining of shortness of breath which makes it impossible for him to do his bird calls. Mr. Arnold is an avid bird watcher, and now he is planning to go see a bird that was previously thought extinct but now they have found in Louisiana. However, he will not be able to fulfill his dream due to his heart condition and he is not a candidate for surgery. He is devestated. For some reason later on he IS in surgery, but its neurosurgery. One of those cool "Derek is operating on someone awake" surgeries. Mr. Arnold, however, gets a little nervous and starts freaking out when he realizes that...well...his brain is exposed and everyone can see it. So, one of the doctors calms him down by making him pretend that the people in the gallery are birds he can watch. It works........Izzie is doing surgery on him http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/ne...reys-main_N.htm Rick and Sally - Sally is Rick's rock climbing instructor (mountain climbing metaphor again - oh you tricky Shonda!). It seems that Rick took a fall while they were climbing, and by all rights should be dead (a near-death experience? IMO if this is NOT Meredith's case they are losing a REALLY VALUABLE opportunity). Sally is very concerned, nervous at what happened to Rick, and tells him that they are going to break the tapes of the climb. The doctors watch the tape of the climb, see the fall, and they hear Rick call to Sally as he was falling that he loves her. Sally didn't hear it above her own shouting. One of the doctors ( MUST be Meredith ) tells Rick that the clarity and everything else he feels right now will fade, the clarity goes away, so tell people what you have to tell them now. SPOILERS Updated on October 29, 2007 * new 10/29 - The ER is filled with teenagers after a schoolbus crash, Bailey treats a patient who was her high school crush, Derek goes out on a date with a fellow doctor, and Thatcher enters the ER looking for Meredith. Guest Starring Jeff Perry as Thatcher, Kali Rocha as Sydney, D.B. Woodside as Marcus, Lauren Stamile as Rose, Madeline Zima as Marissa, Brooke Nevin as Tricia and Stephen Sowan as Danny. Source: ABC * new 10/29 - Things will get more complicated [betweek Meredith and Derek] before they get any easier. Sources confirm to me that Lauren Stamile is most definitely a new love interest for Derek, and she'll be sticking around for a while. I'm told she's pretty much the anti-Meredith (all the way around-looks and personality) and will make Derek somewhat conflicted. Source: Kristin on E!Online http://www.spoilerfix.com/grey.php * new 10/17 - Guest Cast: David Denman as Rick, Cullen Douglas as Mr. Arnold, Marina Black as Sally, Tommy Dewey as Mike, Amanda Loncar as Jackie, Steve Sandvoss as Jason and Chryssie Whitehead as Helena. Source: ABC *10/14 - With his marriage in turmoil, the Chief turns to his fellow male surgeons for a "gentleman's evening," Cristina and Izzie heatedly compete for the same surgeries and the favor of the doctor performing them, Meredith treats the survivor of a skydiving accident, and the doctors treat two injured finalists who are competing in a promotional competition. Source: ABC * new 09/16 - Mr. Arnold comes in the ER due to shortness of breath and a heart condition. He dreams of seeing a previously-thought-extinct bird but his medical condition may prevent him to do so. Sally, a rock climbing instructor, brings Rick to the ER after he fell while climbing. It seems to have been a nasty fall. Helena and Jackie are brought in on the same gurney because they are both holding on to a huge key: the first one to let go will lose a contest in which they can win a house. Helena is missing part of her scalp and has a broken nose while Jackie has a dislocated shoulder and a fractured leg. Both ladies do not want to let go of the key. A doctor convinces Jackie to let an intern (looks like it'll be George) to take her place in the contest so they can treat her. The doctors try to take care of Helena while she still holds the key. But what will happen when she needs surgery herself? Source: SpoilerFix.com * new 09/01 - The episode features Helena and Jackie, two brides to be, and their respective frat-boy type fiancés. The brides are brought to the ER after a contest they took part in turns ugly. Other guest stars will be Rick and Sally, both said to be of the adventurer type. The doctors also take care of skinny and delicate Mr. Arnold. Source: SpoilerFix.com General Spoilers: * new 10/14 - Seth Green (Austin Powers) will be admitted to Seattle Grace for a two-episode Grey's Anatomy arc, says the Hollywood Reporter. Source: TV Guide Online * new 10/14 - An upcoming Grey's episode involves a plastic-surgery patient who has sex with a constipated patient and it relieves his constipation. PODCAST Podcast 4.06 “Kung Fu Fighting” 11.02.07 - Brooke Smith (Dr. Erica Hahn) joins us to discuss joining the cast. Well, last night was Dr Hahn’s first night on staff at Seattle Grace Hospital and the sparks were flying. So, in honor of Grey’s newest cast member, today we bring you a special interview with none other than actress Brooke Smith. And looking forward to next week’s episode “Physical Attraction, Chemical Reaction”: George and Izzie’s romantic chemistry is put to the test, Mark develops a crush on a fellow surgeon, and Callie’s role as Chief Resident is in jeopardy after she delegates much of her job to Bailey. C: OK, hello everyone, my name is Chris and welcome to the Grey’s Anatomy podcast. We’re here today with Brooke Smith. BS: Hello. C: How are you doing there? BS: I’m OK, I worked pretty late last night, but I’m OK. C: So are they working you really hard? I mean obviously you’re part of the cast now, it was just announced in the last episode, and it’s just full throttle from there for you? BS: Yeah, they were easy with me on the first one, and now it’s all out chaos… no! I uh, last night was… You know it’s erratic, what can I say, sometimes I don’t work for a couple of days, and then sometimes I’m here for... I think yesterday was almost 15 hours for me. And it was a marathon OR session so that’s always, you know… C: So how hard are those sessions when you’re actually shooting them? I’ve heard it said before that there’s a nursing staff that’s there to hand you the proper tools, but like, how difficult is it when you’re actually there shooting those scenes? BS: Well I think it’s totally cool, I have to say. I get really into it and I try to get to the point where I actually believe that I’m a surgeon. It’s really great that we have Boky (sp?), you know whenever she’s there it just feels totally real, because she calls me “Doctor” and it just gets me so excited… You know yesterday I had to run in and get a gown on and do it all, you know, as if I’ve done it a million times and correctly, so, I find all that stuff really challenging. And then you have to talk and hit your mark and, you know, it’s a lot! C: It’s a delicate dance, I’m sure. BS: Yeah, it’s like an obstacle course, a little bit. C: You seem like you really enjoy the lingo. Did you do any research for the role of Dr Hahn? Did you go and see any open heart surgeries or anything like that? BS: You know, I saw an open heart surgery but it was way back when I came to do the surgery… well I didn’t come for that reason, but I ended up doing the surgery on Denny. So, when I was here that first time, Linda Klein said “Would you like to go see an open heart surgery?” which uh, I didn’t think I really wanted to see, but it was Patrick who said “Oh, you would totally dig it, you should go.” So, I did. It was totally intense and wild, I mean, what an experience, where else would you actually get to go and stand in the room and watch a man have open heart surgery. So, I did that, and then recently I’ve been hanging out with a woman who’s the head of cardiothoracics in a hospital, and I think it’s interesting to hang out with a woman who does it, because there aren’t many, let me tell ya. C: How would you describe Dr Hahn? And before we get to that question we actually have a clip… Richard: Erica Hahn. First day. Hahn: First day indeed, and a mountain of paperwork to prove it. Richard: Derek Shepherd, you know Erica Hahn. Derek: You’re the new Burke. Richard: And this is Dr Mark Sloane, Head of Plastics… Erica Hahn. Mark: Ah, the new Burke. Derek: Hmm, welcome. Excuse us. Hahn: Interesting guys. And by interesting I mean ridiculously attractive. Do you hire on looks alone or is actual skill a factor? Richard (laughs): Good to have you here, Erica. Hahn: Good to be here, Richard. BS: Wow… should I respond, to the clip? C: Yeah, feel free to respond to the clip. Coming out of that clip, how would you describe your character? BS: Well, I think it’s slightly irritating to her to be referred to as “the new Burke”, because she is the only Hahn, you know, she is her own person. She has constantly been compared to him. I think she was competing with him when they were in college and clearly I think cardiothoracics, and I think surgery in general, can be a man’s world so I think she feels a little… She’s kind of got her heavy metal jacket on coming into the hospital, and now all these men… happen to be very good looking. It’s kind of a boy’s club and for them to refer to her as “the new Burke” doesn’t sit so well with her. C: Now before the clip you mentioned that it’s very rare for a woman to be a cardiothoracic surgeon. How does that weigh on Dr Hahn and how does that affect you, the way you play the character? BS: I think you’ve got to be pretty hardcore to get through 18 years of training to become a cardiothoracic, especially if you’re one of the very few women. She’s learned to sort of, be one of the boys. The other thing is also this eternal thing of women wanting to have it all. I think, and this might be wrong, I’m still learning about Hahn, but it seems to me that she chose work. She decided, whenever she decided, that she was gonna do her work and not really have a life, necessarily. C: I’m hoping that we’ll discover more about that. Now, my question for you though, is how much do you know about Dr Hahn and where she’s going? BS: Oh God… nothing! It’s really true what they say. I don’t know anything, and already it’s just happened with this latest script where I sort of had a certain idea and then you get something in the script and you go “Oh, does that line up with what I was thinking”… and I constantly run into the writer’s room and say “What about this? Is this right?”, or “Am I getting warmer?” and they’re like “Nooo, cold, cold… go the other way.” C: Well, one thing we definitely know about Dr Hahn is that she doesn’t like Cristina Yang. Why do you think that is? BS: Well I wouldn’t say that she doesn’t like her. I think that she doesn’t like anyone making assumptions, and I think it’s… first of all, hearing the information that she slept with these men turned her off a little bit. She lost a little bit of respect for who she thought Cristina was, because in an earlier episode I said “You remind me of myself. You’re driven and ambitious and cold and focused”. So then when I heard that, I thought “Oh God, is she just sleeping her way to the top?” And also the way that she just assumed that she was going to get in on that surgery, I found a little disrespectful to me. I think she’s got to show some respect to the person who’s been around a little longer. I’m not exactly sure. It’s an interesting dynamic, because I think also she sees a lot of herself there, so I think she wants to make sure… You know the woman that I have been hanging out with, the surgeon; she told me once that some of the attending surgeons she worked with when she was a resident were so hard on her. I mean, really just crushed her, and I said “Well, was there anything good about that, looking back” and she said “Well, yes, because they taught me everything I know.” I think it’s a little bit of that. She’s going to try to get Yang to figure out exactly how badly she really wants this. C: So we can definitely expect some butting of heads in the coming episodes, to say the least? BS: Yeah, I think so. But it’s very complicated, there’s a lot of different things going on. C: Now, I know that I’m very excited to have your character on the show, but what has the audience reaction been like to your character? I understand that it’s shifted over time too, from when you were first introduced last season, and there was the competition for the heart between you and Burke too; when you showed up again to operate on Denny. BS: I think people were very attached to Denny, which I understand, because I remember I was doing a play that first time… after the first time that I came and the whole Denny storyline, I had women waiting for me after the play, literally saying “Why did you take that heart?” Meanwhile it was mine, hello, there were two donors and Burke’s died and that’s the way it goes, sorry. I hope they don’t hate me too much… C: How much like your character are you? Because I remember I was just watching “In Her Shoes” and I was completely surprised because I thought you were 180 degrees different from Dr Hahn. So how similar are you to Dr Hahn? BS: You know, I don’t think I’m that similar, I have to say. She’s very challenging for me. One thing I think that’s interesting that I’ve been hearing, apparently people think I’m very confident and cool. I’m glad they think that, I’m glad I project that, but on the inside I don’t feel that way, so that’s interesting. I didn’t do good in school, I don’t feel like I’m as sharp as she is. She’s the kind of woman who meets ten people in one scene and she can turn around and she knows all their names, and I am so not like that. So, then also I’m a pretty emotional person and I think she’s a little afraid of getting into any kind of emotion. She’s a little bit more of a scientist. C: Well that perfectly leads us to the next clip that we have… Mark: Dr Hahn… I heard a crazy rumor about you. Hahn: That I’m performing open heart surgery on a man who’s wide awake? Mark: That’s the rumor. Hahn: That’s the truth. Derek: Oh, I perform awake brain surgery all the time. Hahn & Mark: Not the same thing. Derek: Oh. Mark: You ever heard of a Gentleman’s Evening? Hahn: I’m sorry? Derek: The Chief is hosting a Gentleman’s Evening. Mark: We’re pretty sure it doesn’t involve porn, but we want to be sure… Derek: Mmm… Hahn: Right. Are you two… a couple? Derek & Mark (LOL): No!?! Hahn. Just checking… C: So coming out of the clip, do you want to talk about that a little bit? BS: Ahh… yes! You know, I think she’s playing with them a little bit, because I think that she has probably run into similar types of men… and I think that women, and I don’t mean to speak for all women, but you learn to use your strengths and Dr Hahn is trying to throw them off balance. I think there’s a little bit of that. There’s always that expression around here, “Game On” you know, and it feels a little bit like that. They’re being so cool and witty and funny and relaxed, and let me just show them how good I can be. C: Were you a fan of Grey’s Anatomy before you came on the show? Had you seen it, were you familiar with the characters? BS: You know it sounds ridiculous, but I really haven’t had a television for years. So honestly, it wasn’t anything personal; I just had never really watched it. But since then, I’ve gone in and talked to the writers and said “Well, what about this” and they’re like “Well that happened in Season 2”, then they said “You should really check out the show – it’s good!” So they gave me all the DVD’s, and I’ve been watching them and I’m totally hooked and I totally get it now. I’m in the middle of the 2nd Season in my viewing, so… I totally get it. And it’s interesting because just now I was doing some interviews, and people were talking about Izzie and George, and where did that come from, but I’m telling you if you go back look in the 2nd Season, there’s little hints of it, I think. I mean I found them there. Anyway, I am a huge fan of it now and even last night’s episode that I watched… I’m very interested in Bailey, I want to see what happens with her and her family, I’m a little nervous about that. And what was the other thing I really loved last night? It was George! And I was there for God’s sakes, I walked out of the room and TR did this beautiful work when he was trying to convince the man to take his daughter’s heart. So it just sucks you right in. So I’m totally a fan now. C: What’s it been like working with everyone? Did they welcome you in immediately or were they like “Yeah, we have to put her through the wringer, just like Hahn’s going to put everyone else through the wringer”? BS: Oh yeah, they’re hazing me. No! They’re totally welcoming. You know, that’s what’s so weird about it. I feel like I should be more freaked out or something, but it’s very relaxed and it just feels right. I don’t know how else to say it. Everybody’s great and I get very excited when I have to work with the different actors. I’m hoping I get to work with Sara a little more, because we just did a little bit of stuff together for the first time. I feel great to be here. C: Well I think it will definitely be interesting to look back a season from now and see where your character is and see what hints were dropped in these first episodes. But, sadly we will have to watch week to week and wait to see what happens. BS: As I will! So, we’re all in it together, what can I say. C: Well, thank you for joining us on the podcast today, we appreciate it. BS: OK, thanks. C: Alright, Brooke Smith. VOICE OVERS & QUOTES 4.06 Kung Fu Fighting Meredith: [voice over] There’s this thing about being a surgeon. Maybe it’s pride or maybe it’s just about being tough but a true surgeon never admits they need help unless absolutely necessary. Surgeons don’t need to ask for help because they’re tougher than that. Surgeons are cowboys, rough around the edges, hardcore. At least that’s what they want you to think. Meredith: [voice over] Deep down everyone wants to believe they can be hardcore but hardcore isn’t just about being tough. It’s about acceptance. Sometimes you have to give yourself permission to not be hardcore for once. You don’t have to be tough every minute of every day. It’s okay to let down your guard. In fact there are moments it’s the best thing you can possibly do. As long as you choose your moments wisely. Edited by oncetherewasaway, Jan 31 2009, 06:54 PM.

RECAPS & REVIEWS & RATINGS BUDDYTV Grey's Anatomy: Episode 4.6 "Kung Fu Fighting" - Thursday, November 01, 2007 Last week on Grey's Anatomy, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) doesn't want to die emotionally crippled and alone, Hahn (Brooke Smith) is the new head of cardiothoracic surgery, Richard (James Pickens) is getting a divorce, Meredith is commitment phobic. Tonight's Grey's Anatomy begins with Meredith telling Cristina (Sandra Oh) that she can't sleep without nightmares and panic attacks. Cristina looks up in a psych book that she has severe abandonment issues, and suggests not having breakup sex with Derek (Patrick Dempsey). Meredith knows that the more Derek makes himself available, the more she pulls away, but she makes a sex date in the call room with him later that day anyway. Richard, who is now crashing at Derek's trailer in the wilderness, is whiny about eating trout for breakfast. He suggests to Derek that they have a "gentleman's evening" to take their mind off of their lady troubles. This worries Derek, who is not familiar with the term "gentleman's evening," so he invites McSteamy (Eric Dane) along as backup. Naturally, McSteamy hopes that it will be a night of strippers. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) agrees that the first things she thinks of when she hears "gentleman's evening" are shiny, sequined tassels and one dollar bills......cont’d http://www.buddytv.com/articles/greys-anat...kung-13291.aspx ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ZAP2IT 'Grey's Anatomy': Monopoly is a gentleman's game - November 01, 07:52 PM Tonight on Grey's Anatomy, we covered "severe abandonment issues," wedding dresses, sexism in the workplace, near-death experiences, woodpeckers, and sex. So pretty much just another night at Seattle Grace. Overall? Pretty good stuff. I took issue with a couple cheesy speeches, and Shonda may have tried to cram a bit too much in (which is why we aren't really getting into the patients of the week here), but Dr. Hahn's awesomeness and Callie's impending awesomeness (I can feel it coming, you guys) more than make up for all of that. (Spoilers ahead...) First: Dr. Hahn. I need to begin by saying that halfway through tonight's episode I finally, FINALLY realized where I know that actress from. Silence of the Lambs! She's the "it" in "It puts the lotion on its skin"! Which ups her coolness factor by, like, a thousand, since that's one of my favorite movies. And also a completely classic moment in pop culture....cont’d http://blog.zap2it.com/ithappenedlastnight...-anatomy-m.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- TV SQUAD Grey's Anatomy: Kung Fu Fighting - Posted Nov 2nd 2007 (S04E06) "Are you two... a couple?" - Hahn I think we might have finally reached a turning point for Grey's Anatomy. This wasn't the best episode, but it set up a lot of things that I think the show desperately needed. The most noticeable difference? The addition of Dr. Hahn. She's added a fresh voice to the Seattle Grace staff and her presence has given life to a simmering feud between Cristina and Izzie which I can't wait to see unfold. We saw some great development from the ongoing saga that is Derek and Meredith, Lexie became more than just "the other Grey," and George and Izzie finally hit a roadblock. http://www.tvsquad.com/2007/11/02/greys-an...ng-fu-fighting/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- EW.COM ''Grey's Anatomy'': Mal de Mer - Nov 02, 2007 Our title heroine once again bores us with her near-death experience, her daddy issues, and her inability to commit to Derek; plus, Izzie plans perfect sex with George - Apparently, one episode was not enough to contain Meredith's crap, so we had to do Mer's-a-Mess redux this week. Granted, Cristina did diagnose her with ''severe abandonment issues'' within the first five minutes — I love that it took her this long to figure that out, and she still needed to consult a book, but whatever. I guess that warrants a whole second hour devoted to us feeling bad for Meredith. But let me speak on behalf of all fans and say: Honestly, we got it now. Please, let's move on. Meredith wasn't the only one moping, though: Her sometime Prince Charming was up fishing at the crack of dawn to drown his sorrows. ........ cont’d http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20156516,00.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- MSNBC Grey’s Gossip - (November 2st, 2007) Died, and gone to hell: Meredith helped treat a skydiver who fell 12,000 feet and survived. He cheated death, just like she did! Get it? The doctors watched his freefall on tape and heard him proclaiming his love for his instructor, something he was too cowardly to tell her. Meredith told him he should tell his instructor how he feels because his sense of invincibility would soon go away and he’d again become the coward he was before. Just like she is! Get it? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14484204/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- TV GUIDE A Gentleman's Evening Episode Recap: "Kung Fu Fighting" (November 1st, 2007) Well, tonight wasn't exactly the evening I had anticipated at Seattle Grace, but it was still a fun night. The highlight of which, was every scene shared by Derek and Mark, as they tried to decipher what the Chief meant by "a gentleman's evening." It did sound dirty and with three eligible bachelors in attendance, it certainly had the potential to involve tassels. So, I can't help but wonder how it might have ended up, if Dr. Hahn had not crashed the party. ..................cont’d http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TV...ening/800026287 Monopoly anyone? Christina actually suggests to Mer she stop having break-up sex with Derek. They look at each other with the ol’ “as if” look. Mer admits that the more available Derek becomes, the more she moves away. http://www.tvfodder.com/greys_anatomy/arch..._recap_ku.shtml ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FANGASM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- LA TIMES 'Grey's Anatomy': A reason to believe again - Nov 2, 2007 Greys_2 Just when you think you're out, they pull you back in. Brooke Smith! How I love Brooke Smith. And it's been a big season for her, with guest appearances on "Weeds" and too briefly, "Dirty Sexy Money." But now she has found a home and one in which she can do so much good. "Grey's Anatomy" remains a big hit, but fans are still waiting for the change they were promised after the dismal third season. And this, ladies and gentleman, might just be it. Indeed, from the moment two seasons ago when her Erica Hahn faced off with Isaiah Washington's Preston Burke I have nursed a secret hope that Burke would be out and Hahn would be in, and look. All those years of saying the beads have paid off. She breezed in last week like a desperately needed bracing breath of fresh air, cutting through all the Seattle Grace baloney like a woman who actually knows how to wield a scalpel. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracke...tomy/index.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- THE TV ADDICT Channel Surfing with C.T. - November 4th, 2007 I’m happy to report that GREY’S ANATOMY renaissance continues. I’ll admit to never having been a huge Kathrine Heigl fan before this show. I always found her the weak link in the ROSWELL cast. But man, did she rock that fantastic monologue in which Izzy begged off sex with George because she was too tired. It was also another episode filled with great quotes, most of them — as usual — coming from Christina. “Being aware of your crap and actually overcoming your crap are two very different this,” she told Meredith in what may be the truest words ever spoken. And if I didn’t already love Dr. Hahn, I’d have been a goner for sure when she dubbed Derek and Mark “pretty and prettier.” http://thetvaddict.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- GLOWY BOX - BASKING IN TELEVISION’S FRIENDLY RADIATION Grey's Anatomy: Monopoly is a gentleman's game - Thursday, November 01, 2007 Tonight on Grey's Anatomy, we covered "severe abandonment issues," wedding dresses, sexism in the workplace, near death experiences, woodpeckers, and sex. Truer words have never been spoken, Cristina. Truer words have never been spoken. SYNOPSIS Kung Fu Fighting | Air Date: 11/01/2007 Izzie finds George sleeping in the on-call room and announces that she's tired of waiting, they're going to have hot sex tonight. Meredith can't sleep and Cristina diagnoses severe abandonment issues. She wonders if maybe Meredith should stop having "breakup sex" with Derek. A sky diver miraculously survives a 12,000 feet fall even though his parachute didn't open. It appears all he needs is an appendectomy. The residents watch the video of the accident, during which the diver proclaims that he loves Sally, the instructor. Read More Meredith wonders why her brush with death didn't inspire her to declare her love for Derek. She dreams that, lying his arms after sex, she tells him how she remembers him saving her when she drowned and how the water washed away all her issues. Alex finds Lexie doing her charts in a closet and tells her she needs to not be "the runt" of the lot of interns and to come with him. Two women who were injured competing for the wedding of their dreams refuse to let go of a wedding dress since the last one holding on wins. Mark, who's firmly on Callie's side, decides to make George the proxy for the woman with the injured shoulder, so he has to keep hold of the dress while they work on her. She needs surgery for her shoulder but just wants to get back to holding the dress. Lexie mentions that she hopes that the bride will wear her hair down, to cover her deformed shoulder, and the woman quickly agrees to the surgery. Cristina tries to trade the skydiving surgery to Izzie for a cardio surgery but Izzie refuses and scrubs in with the new cardio doctor, Erica Hahn. The patient has a severe coronary blockage, but he is allergic to the anesthesia, so they can't perform the necessary surgery. Erica is ready to discharge the patient, but Cristina proposes a solution: A local epidural which would leave the patient awake but remove the need for anesthesia. Izzie reminds the man, a bird watcher, of the rare bird he wants to live to see and he agrees. Richard, who's staying with Derek, proposes a "gentleman's evening" to cheer them both up. Derek invites Mark and he wants to know whether the evening involves strippers. They tell about Erica about it and when Richard reprimands her for not running the awake surgery past him first, she tells him that he's being sexist and goes off to do her surgery. Cristina watches the awake surgery from the gallery and marvels how Izzie thought to put a balloon with a drawing of a bird on it in the patient's eye line to keep him focused. Derek confesses that Meredith won't let him take care of her anymore and Cristina says it's okay because she's taking care of Meredith. The heart patient starts to freak out that everyone is watching his surgery and asks them to stop. Izzie steps in and asks him to pretend that the people in the gallery aren't people, but birds, and to describe what kind of bird each one is and that keeps him sufficiently calm for them to finish the surgery. George is still holding onto the dress when the second contestant collapses. The bride with the shoulder injury wakes from surgery and only wants to know if she's won the contest. Callie chews her out for not caring that the woman she stood next to for two days nearly died. "You shouldn't fight this hard for a wedding, you should fight this hard for a marriage," Callie tells her and says you have to know when it's time to let go. Callie passes George in the hallway and asks how his bride is. He says she's okay and Callie hopes that he let go first, because she doesn't want her bride to have won that way. George is surprised that she's able to just talk to him and she tells him, "I'm letting go." George tells the patient who collapsed that he let go first, to catch her, so she's won. Meredith counsels the sky diver that the feeling he has right now, that he can do anything, will go away. She tells him she saw his video and that he should tell Sally how he feels, right now. He demurs, saying Sally is out of his league, but she says that if he doesn't find out if Sally feels the same way, then that will be his only scar. Mark and Derek are still trying to guess what Richard has planned for the evening and are disappointed that merely wanted to spend time with just the guys. However, one woman shows up: Erica, who has invited herself along. They end up playing Monopoly. Lexie and Alex end up leaving the hospital together and she asks his plans for the evening. He tells her all she could hope for is sex from him and "that's never enough for girls like you." George and Izzie finally get their evening alone and she's too exhausted from the surgery to have sex. He confesses his hand hurts from holding the dress, so he's willing to postpone their "perfect night." Meredith tells Cristina she can't give up sleeping with Derek, because it's not about the sex, it's about the moment afterwards, when she feels safe in his arms. She asks if that makes her pathetic and Cristina says, "A little bit." Meredith opens the door of her bedroom to find Lexie and Alex half-naked together in the hallway and Lexie is horrified to realize that Meredith is his roommate.
