Herrmann at Glenmoor - Thursday, Sep 13, 2007
............................A Grey's Visit. The new work included three episodes for the new season of Grey's Anatomy, in which he plays ''the oldest living intern.'' At first, Herrmann said, his character was going to die from a stroke. But now it looks as if he will live, and Herrmann may do more episodes.
He enjoyed the job, too. ''It's a terrific cast,'' he said. Asked how people felt since Isaiah Washington's departure, he said it wasn't talked about much. When Patrick Dempsey invited Herrmann to breakfast, ''We talked cars, because he races. (Washington) never came up.''
Still, from the vibe on the set, Herrmann said, ''I think they're relieved. . . . I think everybody was glad to be rid of the guy.''

MEDICAL STORIES

Issues from last season come up. A mother brings her son to the hospital because she suspects his change in behavior may be due to drugs. A patient is in for surgery to remove cancer.

SIDES SUMMARY

Elaine

Joanne

Marcy

Henry

Thanks to Cathalina for the summary.
Elaine, Joanne and Connie, (3 friends in their 50’s) - Note: The casting sides were only for Connie and Joanne, so either Elaine is someone already on canvas or she’s a “very special guest star.”:
The three women are obviously very close. Dr. Lawson enters with his interns, and Elaine tells Connie this is why SHE should get sick also, they are all so handsome. Dr. Smith enters and Connie calls him the most handsome of all, and it is clear that they know one another. Connie tells them all that Dr, Smith removed her appendix and it BARELY left a scar. She has told her friends all about him, and she says she gets nervous around the good-looking ones. Connie has cancer in her vocal chords, and they will have to do surgery on her to remove them. Connie is afraid that this may be her last chance to talk and she has so much that she has to say. With her friends’ encouragement she does speak - and insults Joanne (tells her that her pants make her look fat) and Elaine (her breath is terrible). Later, the friends return to find that Connie’s surgery went well and she will talk again, but for now she has to rest her vocal chords (Dr. Brown is with her). Elaine and Joanne come in with balloons and tell her that since she can’t talk it THEIR turn - and they begin by telling her that she has horrible taste is men. The three woman bond as Dr. Brown leaves.

Marcy and Henry
Henry is a sullen 15 year-old, and his sudden change in behavior is alarming to his mother, Marcy, who has brought him in for drug tests and a complete blood work up. Dr. Keller is the doctor on the case. When the blood tests come back clean, Marcy is still concerned and Dr. Keller tells her that he’s just a teenager, when Henry starts spouting nonsense. Dr. Keller orders some neurological tests. Later, Dr, Keller is paged back to the clinic to find that Henry had another spouting nonsense spell and has collapsed. An exam shows that he has herniated and pressure in his brain. Dr. Keller orders Dr. Smith paged. Source: SpoilerTV

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS

Let The Truth Sting by David Gray

The hour is out of joint
black sun has risen
and the river of words
is flowing on through
the cages of tradition
and they're handing out emptiness
we'll take it cos its given
free witht his plastic innocence
and these standards of living

Questions, lighted questions
burning holes into my head
hanging like shadows over the sun
staring out like the eyes of the dead
and sometimes my soul flickers
as the wind of change blows cold
over the mire of repetition
down the corridors of rigmarole

What I say, what I think
what I put down in ink
I'm only trying to find a way to understand
and I mean no harm
I'm just searching for calm
in the storm of mankind

Do you find it there
in the sea of faces
that drowns you everyday
in the silence and rubble and empty spaces
where children and rottweilers play
is it buried in the praise
given so cheap
with a meaningless movement of the jaws
in the looking glass
that flatters you
or the rattle of hollow applause

Blind circle, moon and sun
body willing, mind undone
one pain ending while another begins
lies, ruin, disease
into wounds like these
let the truth sting

From the hub to the limit
through the urban hollows
out into the poles of the extreme
to echo through the numbness
of these godless minutes
in the shadow of delusion's regime

But here watching the night
it opens like a flower
the day starts to rust
time pound like
a silent hammer
on this empire of dust
and I'm thinking 'bout the bullet
and the TV screen, the dollar and the clenched fist
and if we're searching for peace
how come we still believe
in hatred as the catalyst

Through the borderline
in front and behind
down the road of thorns
between the barbwire and the soul
bitters and chains
is all that remains
where the wheel has rolled

I feel it from the pit of my stomach
into the ditch of my mind
inside the chambers of my heart
as I stare half blind
at these walls of cardboard
at this space that I've rented
at your beauty that is crumbling
though you try so hard to prevent it

On and on
body willing, mind undone
one pain ending while another begins
lies, ruin, disease
into wounds like these
let the truth sting
let the truth sting
let the truth sting

What's That Song Playing When 'Really Old Guy' Dies on 'Grey's Anatomy'? - Posted Oct 15th 2007
'The Ocean,' by the Bravery
ABC's hit show 'Grey's Anatomy' constantly raises the question, "When and why do some people live and some people die?" As 'The Ocean,' by the Bravery, begins to play, a teenage boy is close to dying, but he's saved; a very chatty woman is about to lose her tongue, but the surgery is successful. Charlie, a semi-comatose patient also known as "Really Old Guy," says he's going to die today ... and he does. When there is no one there to answer, sometimes the best reply is unspoken, and the lyrics from a song can say so much more than dialog............cont’d .... with video

‘Let the Truth Sting’

10.12.07 - Executive Producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers rehash "Let the Truth Sting" and preview next week's episode, "The Heart of the Matter" (10/18/07)

George says ‘I love you’ or whatever, Cristina has pretend sad emotions and Really Old Guy wakes up. All that and more in today’s official Grey’s Anatomy podcast hosted by abc.com.

Well, true to the title of last night’s episode, the truth came out! George was outed as a repeater by Alex, possibly ruining any chemistry Alex had with Lexie. Meredith told Lexie how she really felt about her mother and most importantly, George told Callie the truth about his one night stand. Of course, those were just a few of the stories from last night. Here with the full scoop, plus a preview on next week’s episode ‘The Heart of the Matter’ are Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. ‘The Heart of the Matter’ airs Thursday, October 18th at 9:00pm on abc and is available the next day on abc.com.

Hi, I’m Betsy, and I’m Shonda, and this is Grey’s Anatomy! Hi! Hi! It’s, um, cloudy today so I have to say it was a little tough to wake up. My brain is on a go slow. Yeah, I’m still in the morning sleepiness. Phone! Um, as we have actually said before, Jim, who was a wonderful assistant is no longer with us, but the wonderful Nancy is now…Nancy is awesome and she answers the phones and she also just does everything else as well. But, right now she is probably answering the phone because it stopped ringing. I also just wanted to say for the record Nancy answers the phone really freaking fast. Yes, she does. That was one ring. That was speedy. Because sometimes we get a couple of rings. She moves fast. She moves very, very, very, very zippy in terms of her movements with the phone. But we’re not here to talk about Nancy and the phone. No. No. No. Although we could clearly do that for like an hour, but I don’t think that’s what you guys came to hear…no offense to Nancy. No. Um, I think what we are here to do is talk about the second episode…the second episode…the third episode!...third…third episode…oh my god it’s the third episode already. Time flies when you’re…third episode of Grey’s Anatomy, which was called ‘Let the Truth Sting.’ Let the truth sting…absolutely. And this episode actually has one of my favorite things of all time which is Really Old Guy. Yeah. I have a real fondness for really old guy. And last season I sort of was like, ‘We have to have this really old guy who just sleeps in his room and everyone eats lunch in there and he never ever wakes up,’ and I knew when we put him in there that one time we were going to wake Really Old Guy up. You did. You actually…the other thing just for the genesis of Really Old Guy so that you guys know is, they eat in the cafeteria all the time and if I were an intern I would get really sick of going to the cafeteria like every single….we wanted a new place for them to hang out. And also where they could be alone. Like, it used to be the tunnels where they could just hang out where nobody could find them, be a group by themselves, and they still do the tunnels but Really Old Guy provided them with a special sort of privacy. Exactly, and by really old guy waking up and then expiring, I guess that option is gone. Yeah, for a little while unless there is another really old guy which I sort of doubt. And there would be no point in that. And for you trivia fans out there, it has been the same really old guy the entire time. We didn’t just have some really old guy in a bed before and then he woke up and we cast somebody else. Or we didn’t just rotate him around. That incredibly fine actor has been lying very patiently in a bed waiting for his moment in the sun, which I feel like he did brilliantly. He really did, and I gotta say when we first started casting Really Old Guy, the instinct was people said, ‘well, you just need someone to lie in bed,’ and Shonda kept saying, ‘no, you can’t have someone just lying in bed because first of all, if you watch, if you go back and watch all the episodes, and watch how really old guy did a coma…it’s awesome. Because he actually stirs at the right moment, he does weird crap at the right moment. He really is pretty great. And then, and then when he wakes up he’s such a good actor. He’s so good. He’s such a…I mean just the sweet and charming. It’s also the way he calls her ‘blondie.’ Yeah. I just love his little voice and…yeah. Its like, ‘I want…I want…’ ‘My name is Charlie!’ I just love him. Not that that was a real imitation of him. No, but…no definitely was not a real imitation of him. Both of our imitations actually sucked but that’s okay. That’s good.

What I loved about him and the way we were able to use him in this episode was that he really sort of shock up Izzie’s vision of what was going on with her and George. Absolutely. I mean, absolutely. Bought a load of reality in which I thought was really wonderful. But he also gave perspective to each one of the characters when he first wakes up. He put them totally in context. Do you remember exactly where they are in terms of their food chain of life. Yeah, it’s really nice. Because the way he kind of reduces Meredith’s entire relationship over the course of this series in one sentence. It was blowing hot and cold. Which I think is actually just…it’s great. It’s sort of like, ‘thank you so much for actually kind of summarizing the show.’ Exactly. Um, but I think it does a fair amount for Izzie because she’s so traumatized at this point with her relationship with George. Yeah. She’s so spun. Yeah, she’s so spun. She has no idea what she’s doing….twisty and twirly. And I just thought the moment where she comes in and Charlie’s gone and he’s sitting up in that wheelchair was just lovely. And I also really loved the funeral for Charlie. I loved it….PHONE! I loved the funeral for Charlie too. I thought actually that was weirdly really moving, over the bed. Yeah, it was so interesting to have sort of a vigil in which someone wasn’t in the bed, they are talking to an empty bed but I thought it was really moving and really funny. And I love that Alex’s big insight is that Charlie hardly ever farted. You know what I mean? Like, they don’t know this guy. He was a really old guy in bed. And now, like, he’s gone and they didn’t really know anything about him except for Izzie which I loved. I think…which is really great…and then Izzie…it’s that whole thing of Izzie and hope and thinking she can change things, and that she can force Really Old Guy to stay alive, when in fact…it’s incredible to me that Really Old Guy had his own time clock. He knew…and it ties in really beautifully to George sort of having his own time clock…exactly…for when he can tell Callie. And how he’s going to have to do this and she can’t stop him. Well, because it points in this episode…you kind of…I totally sympathize with Izzie, but at the same time you want to hit her over the head with a shovel because so much other stuff is going on. But that’s what I love about Izzie. You always want to sympathize with her but you do want to hit her over the head with a shovel at the same time. Which is awesome, and I think it’s probably something we won’t necessarily ever see on Grey’s Anatomy. We are never going to hit Izzie over the head with a shovel. There’s no reason to. At least not for the next 3 seasons…unless we need someone else with a coma, in a bed. A shovel coma.

The other thing I really liked was Cristina sort of pretending to be sad and stealing surgeries from Meredith. Totally. Because she’s pissed that Meredith is treating her with kid gloves. Totally. I think it’s also just so…the expectation is, even with Cristina, that she would be kind of screwed up about this entire thing. Of course. So I totally see Meredith trying to…trying to…contribute normal human emotions to the situation. I actually feel that what happened the end of last season with Cristina and the wedding dress and the getting the choker off and the crying in Meredith’s arms…I think that shook Meredith up a little bit. Sure. Like it’s probably one of the most vulnerable we have ever seen Cristina…one of the most vulnerable moments for her…ever seen Cristina, and for her it was like she was trying to take care of her and Cristina doesn’t want to be taken care of. Which I thought was just very lovely. It is, and you know, it is a continuation of the two of them taking the honeymoon together. Yes. Which we never saw but every once in a while it just amuses me when I think about it in the back of my head. Absolutely. The two of them in Hawaii, in a giant honeymoon suite, eating all the food. Eating the food from the mini bar, watching television and drinking tiny little bottles of liquor. Exactly. And probably not going out to the beach very much. Exactly. You know, because it’s like…snorkeling once. Exactly. But it was probably a really bad experience. And then being like, ‘well, it’s like we snorkeled, now we’ve done that. Let’s go back to the room and watch some television and order room service. And just bring in bottles of wine.’ Which is frankly how I like to vacate. This is actually randomly based on business trips and holidays that you’ve taken. Yes. But anyway that is just neither here nor there. But it kind of connects with the whole idea of…they have gotten to be really close. I think Meredith is assuming that Cristina would be processing the way that Meredith in theory would want to process. And in fact Cristina just wants to…or more the way Meredith thinks that the normal person would process, not necessarily the way she would process. Because Meredith truthfully does exactly what Cristina does, which is she says ‘I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine. I drowned, I came back from the dead and my mother died but really let me get back into surgery.’ Yeah. But really just trying to take care of her, which I thought was very sweet.

The other thing that we did was Mark and Richard decided to do this tongue surgery that neither of them actually really knows how to do, and I love that whole idea of them feeling like you can’t…you know, getting a little upset because they think George calls them old. Absolutely. And Alex, you know, says something old about the world’s oldest intern. And deciding that they are going to do this surgery and then getting, sort of shamed back into being grownups by Derek. I just thought that was wonderful. It was really, really great. On top of which, how much we loved that whole story with the woman who is like, ‘I have so many things I want to say.’ And then basically what she wants to say is ‘your butt looks bad in those pants.’ Two puppies. Yes. Exactly. And, ‘your hair looks terrible.’ I just loved that, that like she just wanted to get real with her friends in a way you don’t get real with your friends sometimes. Absolutely, and that even not ever being able to talk again doesn’t necessarily justify doing things. When you kind of…it’s also the expectations of intimacy. It’s the whole thing you expect Cristina to, a normal person would be upset and would be moping around and would be clutching her gifts or a normal person would say to her friends ‘But I love you. The one thing I want to say to you right before I go under the knife so my tongue is removed from my skull is that I love you.’ And instead this woman basically just wants to make sure the woman aren’t making the same mistake with their hygiene and clothing. Which I think is really just incredibly awesome. And that there are these two guys who are so worried about their machismo and their youth around all these interns, and all this sort of like macho surgery testosterone desperately trying to prove that they still have it. In the middle of all this which I think is great.

I also love we have Ed Herrmann joining us as the world’s oldest intern. So awesome, and we’ve been a huge, huge fan of his forever, and we never ever thought we’d be able to get him to do this role, and he was so charming and so lovely and there is a little bit of fun to be had with this guy. It’s very nice. He’s just amazingly terrific in this episode. I love that Alex has a weird coat of honor that allows him to say that they guy smells like arthritis cream but won’t allow him to yell at him. I know. It’s fascinating to me. It’s kind of like talking about your grandfather who’s sitting right next to you. Exactly. It’s that strange thing you do with like older relatives, which is ‘what are we going to do about Pop?’ and Pop is sitting right there.

And I also really love how that tied in with Bailey. The idea that there is a pecking order of things. Exactly. And that that’s the reason there is a pecking order because that’s how we save lives, and getting outside of the pecking order is to mess things up and her realizing that she needs to be Callie’s number two. Exactly. Which I think is a big relief to poor Callie because Callie has got a lot on her plate right now. I know. But that’s also one of my favorite things is just Bailey coming into that room to sort of report, and waiting for Callie to say or do something anything, and Callie just being sort of unable to do anything but look at her paperwork. I love that. I know, I think that’s absolutely the case, and for Bailey to really understand that she doesn’t have a job, so her job is to help somebody else do the job as best as possible, which is something she has been doing for a long time and she sort of has to resign herself to doing it some more.

And then there was always that sort of awesome thing…we debated this a lot in the writer’s room, the moment where Meredith has Lexie intubate the dead guy. We debated it a lot because it is one of those lessons that you teach and it is a hard lesson, and you want your characters to be kind and lovely, but you know, on Grey’s everyone is also really flawed. But what was kind of cool about Meredith having Lexie intubate the dead guy was…that’s what they do. That’s what doctors do. And it may seem really cold to us on the outside, but that’s exactly how those things work. You say ‘Go ahead, try to save his life,’ to somebody when they are practicing when you know the person is already dead. Well, it serves an incredible purpose, because a) the person doesn’t make a mistake, but you also use…you are in a situation with adrenalin and urgency, so…you know what? It actually brings to mind when Addison, with Izzie, had her take care of the baby all night long, who everybody knew was going to die, and she told her that the baby better be alive in the morning and she left her with that baby knowing that the baby would be dead. And everybody thought that that was really, really cruel, but in a way what it does is it also seems your suitability…your endurance, your suitability, your ability to actually stick to things and what sort of resolve you have. It also teaches you to do stuff and it is horrifying, but you can…it’s the only situation they can leave you alone to make mistakes. Because they already know the outcome. Exactly. You are safe to actually make them. And what makes it different is that the whole situation is compounded by the fact that Lexie is Meredith’s half-sister that she doesn’t want to know or talk to. But for Meredith, you know, I really…what I love was that she really was just doing her job. Well, and what’s great about Lexie and Meredith is it’s like Meredith…Meredith who struggles not to take anything personally, Meredith who tried to distance herself and Lexie who takes everything personally. Exactly. And Meredith tries to distance herself, and also tries to deflect by taking care of other people. And I love the moment when…at the end when she sits down with Lexie with Lexie’s mom’s death note and explains to her everything that happened with her mother when she died, which I thought was great.

I love the moment with Bailey, when actually…that incredible moment when Bailey says, ‘You’re her sister, you barely talk to her, you appear to hate her, you were the doctor in charge, her mother is dead and she thinks you hated her mother.’ It’s really, really lovely. I think that that’s…that make’s you realize where…that made me realize something in the moment which was much more what Lexie’s perspective is, because although we have certainly sensed Lexie’s perspective, we don’t know her as well as Meredith. Exactly. So Bailey is an incredible helping hand in that moment as well.

That’s really the excitement of, of …this episode. I mean all those really cool relationships coming. I mean, there’s some really good stuff coming, so when you see sort of how this episode plays, and then especially with the George and Callie of it all, and Izzie of it all, you see what happens next week and watch how it builds, it’s pretty good. It is, and it’s also…I mean there’s a relatively devastating moment right at the end of this episode which is Alex actually outing George. Yes. Which I think also starts to set up things which we will be seeing in the next couple of episodes in terms of where Alex’s head is. But Alex can’t lie. That is part of Alex’s code. He can’t lie. There is no way he is going to stand around and listen to people call George a hero when he feels like George is the repeater. And in fact gives the wrong impression that it is easier than it is because what Alex learned through the experience with his older intern was that, in fact there is a reason why there is a pecking order. Exactly. And he applies that in that situation to these interns. All of them think he is being really mean and when I first saw it I was like ‘Oh god that is incredibly harsh,’ but there is a reason he does it. Because that’s his code of ethics. Yes. Which I think we will start to see more of and will get tested and pressured as time goes on in the next couple of episodes.

In the next episode which we are calling ‘The Heart of the Matter,’ can’t really tell you anything about what happens, like we ever could. No, we never can which is…this is the part of the podcast where everybody probably just holds their head and starts screaming loudly to the universe. But I can say that it’s a little high noon over at Grey’s Anatomy. It is. I think, I think there’s some pretty…if you like the westerns…yeah, there’s some pretty amazing stuff going on. There’s a little world wrestling federation moment…there’s a little bit of magic. There is, so I think at the very, very least that’s worth tuning in for the whole episode. At the very least…you know, girl fight. Thank you for saying it…there’s…yes. I think you can look forward to a girl fight.

We want to give a shout out to a couple of podcast fans we met, Jason, Justin, Jason…Jason and Josh. Jason and Josh who are really, really nice and they were almost exclusively fans of the podcast, and since we have never met anyone in person…PHONE!...who’s actually listened to our podcast, admitted to listening to the podcast I think in public, and maybe privately…we’re pretty sure that they’re the only people listening so we just wanted to say hi, and separately each of them have said actually that they were big fans, so we wanted to acknowledge that very, very fact. Thank you! Please keep listening, please tell your family to listen – and your friends – keep us on the air because we need the ‘podcasted nation-age’…okay…there, see…so as usual we have actually spun out of control and driven into a ditch which is how we like to end our podcast…always. Wheels spinning, car flipped over. This is Shonda, this is Betsy…Grey’s Anatomy.

4.03 Let the Truth Sting

Meredith: [voice over] Doctors give patients a number things. We give them medicine, we give them advice and most of the time we give them our undivided attention. But by far the hardest thing you can give a patient is the truth. The truth is hard, the truth is awkward and very often the truth hurts. I mean .... people say they want the truth but do they really?

Meredith: [voice over] The truth is painful. Deep down nobody wants to hear it especially when it hits close to home. Sometimes we tell the truth because the truth is all we have to give. Sometimes we tell the truth because we need to say it out loud to really hear it for ourselves. And sometimes we tell the truth because we just can’t help ourselves. And sometimes ..... we tell them ..... because we owe .... them at least that much.

Izzie: Charlie the truth is you were a bastard, you were. You were mean and stubborn just, a bastard. But you were a bastard who knew what you wanted. And you stuck to your guns and proved if you want something bad enough, if you're determined enough, if you're patient enough eventually it will happen. It will. And that gives me hope and thanks for that.

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 4.3 "Let the Truth Sting" Recap - Thursday, October 11, 2007
O, happy Thursday night! Not only did tonight's Grey's Anatomy feature the great Edward Herrmann, most recently of Gilmore Girls, as the world's oldest intern (words cannot describe how much I heart this new turn of events), but the episode totally did not suck! It was snarky and funny, light but with some sober moments, all the whininess and depressing stuff was kept at a minimum, and did I mention Edward Herrmann?............cont’d

Feeling optimistic about 'Grey's Anatomy' - October 11, 08:04 PM
God help me, I think this show is actually getting back on track. In some ways. Kind of. Plus, you know, Grandpa from Gilmore Girls! You can't hate on a show that guest stars Grandpa--it would be like hating on an adorable, well-educated puppy. But seriously, I feel like many of the characters regressed to their pre-third season selves tonight, which is a fantastic development as far as I'm concerned. Now if we could just burn this Gizzie thing at the stake, then we'd really be rockin'. (I know, I know, Gizzie-lovers, or "Gizzards." I just found their platonic friendship so perfect that I refuse to idly stand by and watch it ruined. Refuse!................cont’d

Grey's Anatomy: Let the Truth Sting - Posted Oct 11th 2007
(S04E03) "I'm young. I'm a fetus." - Derek

Here we go again. A great episode last week and then we get hit with this weird pile of mush. This wasn't the worst hour Grey's has given us, but it certainly wasn't the best. The whole episode was peppered with some very good moments along with some really bad ones. It's that inconsistency that I find annoying and it's one of the same issues that plagued the show last season. Is it too much to ask for two or three really good episodes in a row before we get a clunker? The truth does sting and the fact of that matter is, Grey's Anatomy is not as good as it once was.................. cont’d

EW - TV Watch - Oct 12th 2007
Getting Old - On ''Grey's Anatomy,'' an elderly patient dies, an ancient intern arrives, and the regular characters all stay the same - Tonight's episode really reminded me of one thing: TV happens every week, and sometimes, because of that, it's pretty…ordinary. No lives are changed, no minds are blown, no entire life philosophies are rethought. You know, it's not HBO — it's TV. (Though we'll save the commentary on how HBO isn't exactly HBO these days for another forum.)

Point being, nothing really happened this week on Grey's Anatomy, yet it was another hour of reasonably entertaining nonsense, even if I'm getting a little itchy for some forward momentum.

Who can’t handle the truth? - Oct 11th 2007
George started off as the rock star intern, but the hard truth was waiting around the corner — about his second “repeat” status and about his marriage. He convinced a woman who was having surgery on her tongue to tell her friends what she was thinking. She proceeded to insult them all. George saw what damage that did, and told Izzie that he’d tell Callie about their affair when he was ready. As George was leaving the hospital, Alex blurted out George’s big secret about repeating his internship. Perhaps fueled by Alex’s truthiness, George went home and confessed to Callie.........cont’d

Age is Just a Number
When the episode opened with Alex and Lexie checking each other out in the elevator, I thought we were going to see the two of them getting cozy with each other tonight. That was so not the case. Instead, Alex got tied down with the "old intern," Dr. Norman Shales (Edward Herrmann), who meant well, but managed to get in the way more than he managed to help. .............cont’d

Grey's Anatomy: Let the Truth Sting and The Heart of the Matter - Posted October 25, 2007 by Cheryl

Wow, you go away on vacation and you miss two of the best episodes of Grey's Anatomy so far! This is going to be a short post-op for both episodes.

Let the Truth Sting: Boy, does it ever. When are these doctors going to learn no one keeps secrets at Seattle Grace? Christina discovers Meredith hasn't broken up with Derek, and uses it to her advantage to get surgeries from Meredith. I just love their friendship! Meredith finally figures it out, though, and outs Christina for using her failure to marry Burke to take advantage of Meredith's sympathetic side. Fun!

Hey! Really Old Guy comes out of his coma! And, then he dies. Bummer. His interaction with Izzie was terrific, and apparently he could hear all the secrets of last year's interns.

Alex outs George in the elevator as he blurts out to the interns George is a repeater. With that, George no longer has the respect of his doe-eyed colleagues. As for the other happenings, as much as Meredith wants to avoid her sister Lexie, she can't. There's quite a bit of tension between the sisters Grey, which results in Lexie storming down to the Clinic for refuge, and telling a fib to Dr. Bailey to stay down there. I felt a ping of pain for Lexie, as she really didn't get any information from stupid Thatcher on how her mother actually died. I just hope she's not looking for a mother figure in Meredith! Although Meredith is dark and twisty she is also sympathetic, and walks Lexie through her mother's medical file, stating clearly that in each case, there was a one percent, maybe two percent chance of any of the complications that happened to Susan actually happening.

So, while George is down, he might as well go all the way down. At the end of the episode, he finally catches up with Callie at their hotel room, and she looks him straight in the eye, "Just tell me." And, he does: "I slept with Izzie." Hell of an ending that kept me wanting more. Thank goodness I was able to watch the full episodes back to back on ABC.com!

The Heart of the Matter: Finally, the writers gave some meaty dialog to Callie and to Alex. Callie is obviously saddened by George's admission, but she says she forgives him, because they made a commitment. This prompts George to act like a five year old and run through the hospital in search of Izzie to give her warning he's told Callie. Izzie's being Izzie, and is so self-absorbed in being a teacher, she doesn't realize Callie is behind her. Callie tells Izzie she knows everything and wants to talk to her, at noon, in the cafeteria. This prompts Izzie to act like a five year old and think that Callie is going to kick her ass at the hospital. When the time comes, Izzie's fists-up response to Callie approaching her further humiliates Callie. Callie, meanwhile starts to fall apart, to the point where she provokes and almost begs a patient's boyfriend to punch her so she can feel something. Bailey is genuinely concerned about Callie's stability, and warns her if she continues to say she's okay and acts to the contrary she could lose her career. Callie and Izzie finally talk, with Izzie trying to apologize. And Callie, the true class-act she is, let's Izzie have it, without fists, and tells her she betrayed a fellow woman, and that she stole something from her, like a petty little thief. Bam.

Izzie confesses to Alex she slept with George, and Alex walks away from her disgusted. Because it's O'Malley. Because it's a married man. Because it wasn't him post-Denny.

I really hope they keep Edward Hermann (Norman, the World's Oldest Intern) on the show for more episodes, because he's all sorts of awesome. I really liked the interaction with Meredith.

Speaking of Meredith, Derek asks her to spend 48 hours of uninterrupted time with him in Wine Country. She gets upset because he's making friends with "the other Grey." He tells her he can tell the other Grey what he can't tell her. Meredith retorts and tells him he can tell her anything. And then, Derek grows a set, and tells her point-blank what's in his heart: he wants to marry her; he wants children with her; he wants to grow old with her; he wants to live to be 102 and die in her arms. Wow. Meredith, take the man back. Take. The. Man. Back! I was annoyed with Derek in season three, and I am so happy where his character is right now. It just gives me the warm and fuzzies! But, he also warned her - and gave her a realistic, non-mopey warning - he can wait for her, but he's not sure what will happen if a girl comes along who will be willing to give him what he wants.

At the end, Izzie's crying on her bed, and Alex is kind enough to hand her a box of tissues. Callie doesn't forgive George, and walks away to leave him in the rain.

What do you think? Should Callie and George stay together? Do you think Izzie and George will continue their relationship? Will Meredith, Derek and Lexie all co-exist peacefully? Will Norman continue to use seriously in his dialogue?

'Grey's Anatomy': It's old guys' night - October 12, 2007
Edward Herrmann has joined the cast of "Grey's Anatomy." I know, I know, I should have led with: George finally told Callie that he slept with Izzie! Oh my! But frankly, the appearance of Herrmann, that veteran actor last seen on "The Gilmore Girls," is a lot more interesting and uplifting, proving as it does two things: "Grey's" is definitely on an upswing and old-guy interns are the latest TV trend.

NEW YORK MAGAZINE

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: No Hospital for Old Men - 10/12/07
This week's theme was “truth,” which Meredith informs us can be quite painful. And conveniently, each patient's problem reflects painful truth for a doctor. Surprising? Not on this show!

Alex gets: A mom with a teenage son she's convinced is on drugs. Alex has a new intern, an old man, that he's shy about telling to shut up. Old Man Intern screws up Alex's diagnosis of the teen, who, it turns out, isn't on drugs but has a brain problem instead.
What it means: Alex finally puts Old Man Intern in his place and saves the teen by sticking a big needle into his eye.
The outcome: Alex learns to be a better teacher (though someone needs to educate him on how heinous that goatee is).

Izzie gets: Remember the old comatose guy whose room the interns used to eat lunch in last year? Neither did we, until he woke up and told Izzie that he doesn't think George is going to leave his wife. (Apparently he absorbed all of last season's gossip.) He also says that if a person really wants to do something (like die, in his case), he or she will do it.
What it means: Izzie remains convinced that if she really wants something enough (read George), she will get it.
The outcome: Old Man Patient dies. Izzie conducts a sort of funeral over his empty bed; Alex recalls how “he didn't fart too much.”

George gets: An annoying woman who has cancer of the tongue and may lose her ability to speak. George encourages her to express her feelings while she still has the chance. She tells one friend that the friend has bad breath.
What it means: George must speak now and tell Callie that he loves Izzie! (Every patient of George's somehow convinces him to tell Callie it's over.)
The outcome: The woman retains her ability to speak; George finally tells Callie that he slept with Izzie.
Bonus round, Chief and McSteamy: The two “old dogs” try a radical new surgery on the woman to prove they still have what it takes.
The outcome: The surgery is successful, but barely. Chief should really spend more time with his wife — he's not getting any younger.

Next week: We see a flirtation between Meredith's sister and McDreamy. They'll probably get a patient who's flirting with his wife's sister or something. Can't wait! —Emma Rosenblum

Channel Surfing with C.T. -- Sunday, October 7th, 2007
................Over the summer, I watched all three seasons of GREY’S ANATOMY on DVD, and now I’ve watched the first two episodes of the fourth season. All I can say is that the way they are treated Callie is criminal. Look, I’ll admit to liking Izzy and George together. They’re cute in a sickening kinda way. But Callie was actually good for him, and I loved the conflict the relationship created between her husband and his friends. Here’s hoping karma sends her flying into McSteamy’s arms. And how great was the scene where Bailey — having been repressing her rage since being passed over as Chief Resident — went off on Karev and then sat back, looking as if she needed a ciggie ’cause venting was just about orgasmic for her. Great, great stuff.

SYNOPSIS

Let the Truth Sting | Air Date: 10/11/2007
When Meredith greets Derek in the elevator, Cristina realizes that they're back on. Meredith feels guilty about it, since Cristina has lost Burke, and tells him they have to keep things between them a secret. Cristina pretends to be severely depressed about her breakup and gets Meredith to swap a surgery for a shift supervising interns in the pit.

Derek complains to Mark about the secrecy with Meredith and Mark is surprised that Derek didn't really break up with her. He tells Derek that he's foolish for hoping they'll officially get back together and is skeptical when Derek says he's not expecting that.

A chatty patient, Cathy, is told she's going to have to lose 60 percent of her tongue due to cancer. She's devastated to hear that the reconstructive surgery planned will leave her nearly unable to talk. Richard decides to try an innovative new surgery that would reactivate the nerve in her tongue. Mark is convinced, although George worries that neither of them has ever done it before.

Izzie anxiously waits for George to see if he's told Callie, but he hasn't. Izzie takes him aside, into the room where the semi-comatose Really Old Guy is, to ask him why not, but they're interrupted by her interns.

To everyone's great surprise, the elderly patient, who's been in a coma for a year, wakes up and objects to being referred to as Really Old Guy. He announces his name is Charlie and that he's only woken up because he's plans to die today. While Izzie examines him, he reveals that he knows everything about all the residents, after the year they spent lunching and gossiping in his room. He insists that George isn't going to leave his wife for Izzie because men never do. She freaks out and insists that George tell Callie tonight but he says he's going to do it in his own way.

Charlie starts pulling his tubes and wires out to help expedite his death and Izzie is so annoyed with him, she helps him, until an intern points out that he's stopped breathing. They manage to bring him back, but he begs Izzie to stop saving his life. Izzie tells him he's probably right about George and then she realizes that Charlie has died, just like he said he would. She calls the residents and George to say some nice things about him in tribute. Izzie declares that he was a bastard, but one who knew what he wanted. And that gives her hope that you can get what you want, eventually.

Alex is saddled with a middle-aged intern named Norman and wants to dump him on the clinic. Miranda insists that she first needs a favor from him: He has to treat a teenage boy whose mother has brought him in because she suspects he's on drugs. Alex tries to explain that his altered behavior can have a variety of causes, but Norman sides with the mother, praising her intuition. The drug test comes back negative and it looks like the boy is just going through normal teenage moodiness, until he starts spouting gibberish. Alex orders a neural exam. The boy has hydrocephalis, which is impacting his speech.

During the tongue surgery, Mark isn't sure what to do next as he's never done this before. They realize they need an extra set of hands and send George to fetch Derek. The teenage boy collapses and Alex runs to get Derek, who's busy with the tongue surgery. He tells Alex what to do: He needs to stick a needle behind the patient's eye into his brain, which saves his life.

Meredith has to supervise Lexie and when the paramedics bring in a man who's not breathing, Meredith has Lexie perform her first intubation on him. The man dies and Lexie is horrified that Meredith didn't do more for him. Meredith explains that the man was already dead when he came in and that her responsibility is to teach Lexie. Since Lexie seems unwilling to learn from Meredith, she orders her to go to the clinic. Miranda is upset that the clinic is being treated as a dumping ground and orders her to go back, but Lexie begs her to stay since Meredith obviously hates her.Miranda tells Meredith that Lexie thinks she hates her and her mother, Susan -- who died under Meredith's care. Miranda insists that Meredith's job is to help Lexie be a better doctor. Meredith tells Lexie that she was very fond of Susan and then explains every detail of what went wrong on the day she died.

Richard frets that he's left Adele waiting because of the surgery. Derek advises him to tell her the truth about how much he's missed her.

Meredith overhears Cristina boasting about the cool tongue surgery and realizes she's been faking her sadness. She confronts her and Cristina says she's dealing. And that she doesn't need to be "protected" from the news that Meredith's back with Derek.

The new batch of interns, who have no idea that George is repeating his internship, consider him "the best intern ever," until Alex points out that George is a repeater and that if they really want to learn from someone, they should learn from a resident.

Miranda updates Callie, who's been doing paperwork all day, on all the residents' dumping of interns, but Callie couldn't care less. Callie says she knows Miranda better at her job but she doesn't want to fight her, or anyone, so she's just going to do paperwork. Miranda admits she's having trouble with being #2 when she used to be #1, but she's going to help Callie since she obviously needs it. Callie accepts, with relief.

That night, George finally tells Callie about Izzie.
